Radial Turbines Diagnosis in Turbocharging Application

The main purpose of this work is the development of a diagnostic procedure for radial turbines installed on internal combustion engine turbochargers. The study is part of a wider research activity regarding the development of diagnostic systems dedicated to cogenerative engine. The proposed procedure is able to formulate a judgment about the turbines efficiency through the real-time evaluation of an effective performance index, only on the basis of pressure measurements across the turbine. Such diagnostic procedure was developed in reference to experimental data gathered in two acquisition campaigns performed before and after a consistent maintenance intervention on engine turbines. The first part of the work approaches turbine failures issues, while in the second one experimental results are presented and analyzed. Finally, the study deals with the definition of some turbine health state indices and their test in reference to the experimental data cited above. A particular index was validated as useful to be implemented in a diagnostic procedure for detection of turbine degradation.

Objective: Health Transformation Program (HTP) which is a health sector reform began in 2003 in Turkey has changed many parameters within the health sector. In the years when the reform was proposed, it can be said that most of the limitations of the health system are related to the insufficiency of resources and the inability to organize them properly. It is clear that the limitations of human resources, like all resources, bring out the justice problem in distribution. Justice requires fair participation to the resources that will be used in the field of health and fair, honest, and equal distribution of the allocated resource according to needs. Our study will evaluate the human resources policy of the Health Transformation Program in terms of need, equality, utilitarianism, and equity which are the sub-principles of justice.Materials and methods: This research is an example of retrospective study. The health justice principle has been tried to be tested as a new health policy, the Health Transformation Program, was declared in Turkey in 2003 by comparing human resources data between the beginning and end of the process up to 2013. The data acquired in our country will be compared with the data of the world and OECD countries before and after the program. Human resources data will be obtained from the Ministry of Health, State Planning Organization, WHO, WB and OECD.Results and discussion: As a result of the evaluations, it is observed that the principles of justice are generally pursued in the planning and implementation of the Health Transformation Program. On the other hand, it is possible for people to have access to health services according to their needs, as the program claims, by applying the need principle. However, the lack of tangible criteria to determine needs and the ambiguity of the definition of need delimitate the usage of this sub-principle of justice.Conclusion: It is difficult to fully observe the principle of justice in health policies. The paper presents results obtained by processing a series of published experimental data on heat and mass transfer during evaporation of pure liquids from the free board of a liquid film into the turbulent gas phone. The data has been processed on the basis of the earlier theory of mechanism of heat and mass transfer. In spite of the fact that this process exhibits a strong Stefan's flow, the results indicate that with a proper definition of the driving forces the agreement between theory and experiment is very good.

Gas from the gasification of pellets made from renewable sources of energy or from lower-quality fuels often contains a number of pollutants. This may cause technical difficulties during the gas use in internal combustion gas engines used for energy and heat cogeneration. Therefore, an adequate system of gas cleaning must be selected. In line with such requirements, this paper focuses on the characterization and comparison of gases produced from different types of biomass during gasification. The biomass tested was wood, straw, and hay pellets. The paper gives a detailed description and evaluation of the measurements from a fix-bed gasifier for the properties of the produced gases, raw fuels, tar composition, and its particle content before and after the cleaning process. The results of elemental composition, net calorific value, moisture, and ash content show that the cleaned gases are suitable for internal combustion engine-based cogeneration systems, but unsuitable for gas turbines, where a different cleaning technology would be needed.

AbstractReactivity, or the phenomenon by which subjects tend to modify their behavior in virtue of their being studied upon, is often cited as one of the most important difficulties involved in social scientific experiments, and yet, there is to date a persistent conceptual muddle when dealing with the many dimensions of reactivity. This paper offers a conceptual framework for reactivity that draws on an interventionist approach to causality. The framework allows us to offer an unambiguous definition of reactivity and distinguishes it from placebo effects. Further, it allows us to distinguish between benign and malignant forms of the phenomenon, depending on whether reactivity constitutes a danger to the validity of the causal inferences drawn from experimental data.

<b><i>Introduction:</i></b> Bariatric surgery results in both intentional and unintentional metabolic changes. In a high-volume bariatric center, extensive laboratory panels are used to monitor these changes pre- and postoperatively. Consecutive measurements of relevant biochemical markers allow exploration of the health state of bariatric patients and comparison of different patient groups. <b><i>Objective:</i></b> The objective of this study is to compare biomarker distributions over time between 2 common bariatric procedures, i.e., sleeve gastrectomy (SG) and gastric bypass (RYGB), using visual analytics. <b><i>Methods:</i></b> Both pre- and postsurgical (6, 12, and 24 months) data of all patients who underwent primary bariatric surgery were collected retrospectively. The distribution and evolution of different biochemical markers were compared before and after surgery using asymmetric beanplots in order to evaluate the effect of primary SG and RYGB. A beanplot is an alternative to the boxplot that allows an easy and thorough visual comparison of univariate data. <b><i>Results:</i></b> In total, 1,237 patients (659 SG and 578 RYGB) were included. The sleeve and bypass groups were comparable in terms of age and the prevalence of comorbidities. The mean presurgical BMI and the percentage of males were higher in the sleeve group. The effect of surgery on lowering of glycated hemoglobin was similar for both surgery types. After RYGB surgery, the decrease in the cholesterol concentration was larger than after SG. The enzymatic activity of aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase, and alkaline phosphate in sleeve patients was higher presurgically but lower postsurgically compared to bypass values. <b><i>Conclusions:</i></b> Beanplots allow intuitive visualization of population distributions. Analysis of this large population-based data set using beanplots suggests comparable efficacies of both types of surgery in reducing diabetes. RYGB surgery reduced dyslipidemia more effectively than SG. The trend toward a larger decrease in liver enzyme activities following SG is a subject for further investigation.

With the rise of Deep Learning approaches in computer vision applications, significant strides have been made towards vehicular autonomy. Research activity in autonomous drone navigation has increased rapidly in the past five years, and drones are moving fast towards the ultimate goal of near-complete autonomy. However, while much work in the area focuses on specific tasks in drone navigation, the contribution to the overall goal of autonomy is often not assessed, and a comprehensive overview is needed. In this work, a taxonomy of drone navigation autonomy is established by mapping the definitions of vehicular autonomy levels, as defined by the Society of Automotive Engineers, to specific drone tasks in order to create a clear definition of autonomy when applied to drones. A top–down examination of research work in the area is conducted, focusing on drone navigation tasks, in order to understand the extent of research activity in each area. Autonomy levels are cross-checked against the drone navigation tasks addressed in each work to provide a framework for understanding the trajectory of current research. This work serves as a guide to research in drone autonomy with a particular focus on Deep Learning-based solutions, indicating key works and areas of opportunity for development of this area in the future.

AbstractFunctions are important in designing. However, several issues hinder progress with the understanding and usage of functions: lack of a clear and overarching definition of function, lack of overall justifications for the inevitability of the multiple views of function, and scarcity of systematic attempts to relate these views with one another. To help resolve these, the objectives of this research are to propose a common definition of function that underlies the multiple views in literature and to identify and validate the views of function that are logically justified to be present in designing. Function is defined as a change intended by designers between two scenarios: before and after the introduction of the design. A framework is proposed that comprises the above definition of function and an empirically validated model of designing, extended generate, evaluate, modify, and select of state-change, and an action, part, phenomenon, input, organ, and effect model of causality (Known as GEMS of SAPPhIRE), comprising the views of activity, outcome, requirement–solution–information, and system–environment. The framework is used to identify the logically possible views of function in the context of designing and is validated by comparing these with the views of function in the literature. Describing the different views of function using the proposed framework should enable comparisons and determine relationships among the various views, leading to better understanding and usage of functions in designing.

A special software simulating changes to wood due to various processes (either treatment or degradation) has been developed within the SWORFISH (Superb Wood Surface Finishing) project. The definition of the material modifications due to processes is based on the expert knowledge and/or experimental data. The dedicated algorithm simulates material modifications (with a special focus on surface) taking into account original material characteristics (evaluated by means of NDT techniques) and setting of process parameters. In this way, it is possible to analyze the sequence of processes (i.e. material modifications) and to estimate properties of the resulting product. Two case studies are presented for illustration of the potential uses of the SWORFISH approach in the field of timber structures.

The computation of angular acceleration of a rigid body from measured linear accelerations is a simple procedure, based on well-known kinematic principles. It can be shown that, in theory, a minimum of six linear accelerometers are required for a complete definition of the kinematics of a rigid body. However, recent attempts in impact biomechanics to determine general three-dimensional motion of body segments were unsuccessful when only six accelerometers were used. This paper demonstrates the cause for this inconsistency between theory and practice and specifies the conditions under which the method fails. In addition, an alternate method based on a special nine-accelerometer configuration is proposed. The stability and superiority of this approach are shown by the use of hypothetical as well as experimental data.

Abstract A hybrid propulsion system of new conception for medium-size passenger cars is described and its preliminary design developed. The system consists of a turbogas set operating at fixed rpm, and a battery-operated electric motor that constitutes the actual “propulsor”. The battery pack is charged by the thermal engine which works in an electronically controlled on/off mode. Though the idea is not entirely new (there are some concept cars with similar characteristics), the present study has important new aspects, in that it bases the sizing of the thermal engine on the foreseen “worst case” vehicle mission (derived from available data on mileage and consumption derived from road tests and standard EEC driving mission cycles) that they can in fact be accomplished, and then proceeds to develop a control strategy that enables the vehicle to perform at its near–peak efficiency over a wide range of possible missions. To increase the driveability of the car, a variable-inlet vane system is provided for the gas turbine. After developing the mission concept, and showing via a thorough set of energy balances (integrated over various mission profiles), a preliminary sizing of the turbogas set is performed. The results of this first part of the development program show that the concept is indeed feasible, and that it has important advantages over both more traditional (Hybrid Vehicles powered by an Internal Combustion Engine) and novel (All-Electric Vehicle) propulsion systems.
