CRITICAL REVIEW OF EMULSION STABILITY AND CHARACTERIZATION TECHNIQUES IN OIL PROCESSING

Abstract Effective separation of water and oil dispersions is considered a critical step in the determination of technical and economic success in the petroleum industry over the years. Moreover, a deeper understanding of the emulsification process and different affected parameters is essential for cost-effective oil production, transportation, and downstream processing. Numerous studies conducted on the concept of dispersion characterization indicate the importance of this concept, which deserves attention by the scientific community. Therefore, a comprehensive review study with critical analysis on significant concepts will help readers follow them easily. This study is a comprehensive review of the concept of dispersion characterization and conducted studies recently published. The main purposes of this review are to 1) Highlight flaws, 2) Outline gaps and weaknesses, 3) Address conflicts, 4) Prevent duplication of effort, 5) List factors affecting dispersion. It was found that the separation efficiency and stability of dispersions are affected by different chemical and physical factors. Factors affecting the stability of the emulsions have been studied in detail and will help to look for the right action to ensure stable emulsions. In addition, methods of ensuring stability, especially coalescence are highlighted, and coalescence mathematical explanations of phenomena are presented.

In the petroleum industry, during the production and transportation of oil, multiphase flow occurs, due to the usual mixture of the crude oil, water and gas. This type of flow can be simplified, for study purposes, as a two-phase one, in which the gas is one phase, and a mixture of oil and water is the other. Separation of gaseous and liquid phases at the wellhead level is done by a separator and has innumerous advantages, including avoiding or at least reducing typical problems of multiphase flows such as intermittent flow, severe slugging and hydrates deposition. Another advantage is to increase the efficiency of the submersible centrifugal pumps or other artificial lift process used. A recurrent problem found in exploration and production of oil and gas is the range of the fluid viscosities encountered during exploration and extraction of petroleum, which can greatly vary with the temperature or the composition of the oil being extracted. Thus, it is necessary to understand how this parameter affects the performance of the equipment used. In addition, installation and maintenance of separators are hampered by the large size of this type of equipment. Therefore, a prior distribution system is here proposed, aiming to distribute the flow in more than one branch, in order to decrease the general size of the separation equipment needed, while maintaining the flow rate and separation efficiency. This distribution system has a cyclonic chamber, in which the flow enters through two nozzles tangentially oriented with the wall of the chamber, which performs a pre-separation due to the centrifugal field, and divides the flow into four outlets. This work presents a numerical study on the height influence of the cyclonic chamber in a distribution system. The transient beginning of the flow is analyzed, with the stability of the film being study. This work is focused on the behavior of the liquid phase in this proposed distribution system, so that only single-phase liquid flow at the inlet of the distribution system is considered. A validation was done through comparison with experimental data obtained in a test rig, in which was used one wire mesh sensor with 12 wires in order to evaluate the thickness of the liquid film over time. In addition, different heights and viscosities are studied in order to evaluate their influence on the flow. The parameters investigated are the film thickness, velocity and turbulence kinetic energy fields and flow rates at the outlets, focusing on the stability of the film and the transient effects associated with the beginning of the flow. In order to perform this study, the commercial software ANSYS-CFX 15.0 was used, with a hybrid mesh, for four different heights and two inlet velocities.

Factors affecting akinete formation and the survival of planktonic bluegreen algal populations after the formation of 'water blooms’ were investigated in two eutrophic kataglacial lakes. It is considered that the induction of sporulation may be due to extreme conditions at the water surface during the summer to which the algal bloom is exposed, rather than to nutrient, especially orthophosphate, deficiency. It has not been shown conclusively that akinetes constitute an overwintering stage of the planktonic algal life cycle, or that akinetes germinate in the spring to produce the inoculum for subsequent vegetative growth. Comparisons of planktonic, sedimenting and benthic algal material indicate that germination shortly after maturation may provide the greater part of the overwintering planktonic vegetative populations. Population sizes and life cycles appear to be influenced by the physical factors which control the stability of the water column.

The relationship between daily settlement rates and local concentrations of veligers of the zebra mussel, Dreissena polymorpha, was investigated using plankton sampling and scouring pad collectors. A total of 102 plankton and 136 collector samples were taken from a nearshore site near Wheatley, Ontario, in west-central Lake Erie, over 17 consecutive d in August 1992. Results demonstrate a strong correlation between daily settlement rates and daily concentrations of late-stage (competent) veligers in the water column (determined at shell lengths ≥ 170 μm; r = 0.93–0.98; p < 0.001; log10-transformed data). Variations in settlement rates of 1–3 orders of magnitude occurred within 24–96 h. Results also suggest that wind-induced hydrodynamics can affect settlement rates of zebra mussel larvae; the period used to monitor settlement (24 h) was much shorter than that employed (~1–2+ wk) in previous studies. Daily monitoring of concentrations of late-stage veligers in the water column as well as settlers (fibrous collectors) may help to identify biological and physical factors affecting short-term variability in settlement; it may also prove advantageous for industries where early detection of colonization by the zebra mussel is critical for cost-effective control of this invasive mollusc.

AbstractA review of the stability theory of symmetrizable time-dependent difference schemes is represented. The notion of the operator-difference scheme is introduced and general ideas about stability in the sense of the initial data and in the sense of the right hand side are formulated. Further, the so-called symmetrizable difference schemes are considered in detail for which we manage to formulate the unimprovable necessary and su±cient conditions of stability in the sense of the initial data. The schemes with variable weight multipliers are a typical representative of symmetrizable difference schemes. For such schemes a numerical algorithm is proposed and realized for constructing stability boundaries.

In the manufacture of detergents still using surfactants (which serves as an emulsifier) of crude oil in the form of the AS. (alcohol sulfate) and LAS (linear alkylbenzene sulfonate), where this type of surfactant cannot be degraded by microorganisms when discharged into the environment, causing environmental pollution. Methyl ester sulfonate surfactant is an anionic surfactant which has a composition of C16 - C18 fatty acids are capable of acting against nature deterjensinya, while the C12 - C14 fatty acids contribute to the foaming effect. The purpose of this study was to look for the formulation of methyl ester sulfonate (MES) the right to produce a good detergent by using materials such as methyl ester sulfonate surfactant self-made, methyl ester sulfonate and sodium lauryl market Ester Sulfate (SLS) with a concentration of 15 %, 20 % and 25 %. Detergent results of the study have high detergency ( net ) compared with the detergency of detergent commercial, have a stable emulsion stability, the stability of the foam/foam detergent power made from methyl ester sulfonate surfactant produces less foam, compared with a detergent made from SLS and surfactant SNI 06-4075-1996 standards.

<p><em>Suspects have the right to obtain legal assistance, especially for suspects who are classified as economically disadvantaged in accordance with Article 56 of the Criminal Procedure Code (KUHAP). The facts show that there are many irregularities in the implementation of legal aid, therefore it is necessary to know about the implementation of free legal aid for suspects who are incapacitated at the level of investigation and the factors that become obstacles in the implementation of legal aid. This legal research is an empirical legal research and this research is descriptive in nature. The data used are primary data and secondary data. The techniques used to collect data were document study techniques and interview techniques. Inhibiting factors affecting the implementation of free legal aid for suspects who are unable at the level of investigation can be classified and differentiated into 3 factors, namely, legal substance, legal structure, and legal culture).</em></p><p><strong><em>Keywords: </em></strong><em>Legal Aid, Criminal Cases</em></p>

Aphids are responsible for the spread of more than half of the known phytovirus species. Virus transmission within the plant–aphid–phytovirus pathosystem depends on vector mobility which allows the aphid to reach its host plant and on vector efficiency in terms of ability to transmit phytoviruses. However, several other factors can influence the phytoviruses transmission process and have significant epidemiological consequences. In this review, we aimed to analyse the aphid behaviours and influencing factors affecting phytovirus spread. We discussed the impact of vector host-seeking and dispersal behaviours mostly involved in aphid-born phytovirus spread but also the effect of feeding behaviours and life history traits involved in plant–aphid–phytovirus relationships on vector performances. We also noted that these behaviours are influenced by factors inherent to the interactions between pathosystem components (mode of transmission of phytoviruses, vector efficiency, plant resistance, …) and several biological, biochemical, chemical or physical factors related to the environment of these pathosystem components, most of them being manipulated as means to control vector-borne diseases in the crop fields.

The transportation sector is a major contributor to carbon dioxide emissions, and the resulting climate change. The diffusion of alternative fuel vehicles, including hybrid electric vehicles (HEV), is an important solution for these issues. This study aimed to evaluate the factors affecting the ownership ratio of HEVs, particularly passenger vehicles, and the regional differences in the purchase of HEVs in Japan. This study performed a fixed-effects regression analysis with panel data for 47 prefectures during the period 2005–2015 to evaluate the factors affecting the HEV ownership ratio and conducted three cluster analyses to investigate the regional differences in diffusion in terms of price categories, body types, and drive systems of HEVs. Some demographic and social factors were found to affect the ownership ratio in Japan, whereas economic factors, including prefecture-level subsidies for purchasing HEVs, were not. Regarding regional differences, prefectures in urban areas with higher income levels tend to purchase more expensive and large-sized HEVs. These results suggest that a strategy to sell the right vehicle to the right person and region is essential for further promoting HEVs in Japan.
