Eight Principles Derived From the Engineering Literature for Effective Design for the Developing World

This paper reviews the findings of several engineering researchers and practitioners on the topic of design for the developing world. We arrange these findings into eight guiding principles aimed at helping those who are searching for effective and sustainable approaches for design for the developing world. The findings reviewed come from the mechanical engineering discipline, as well as from other engineering disciplines. For each principle, we provide references to various studies as a means of supporting the principle. We also provide a detailed example of each principle. Finally, based on our own experience and based on the many papers reviewed, we provide a succinct list of suggestions for using each principle. Ultimately, we believe that the stated principles help overcome the challenges of design for the developing world, which are often dominated by designer unfamiliarity with poverty and foreign culture, as well as by the constraint of extreme affordability.

Terbukti dari banyaknya mahasiswa yang ikut ambil bagian dalam permainan ini, dari hasil pengamatan peneliti selaku mahasiswa yang aktif mendapatkan banyak data bahwa mahasiswa Pendidikan Teknik Mesin Universitas Negeri Manado yang aktif bermain memiliki kemampuan cara belajar yang kurang aktif dalam pembelajaran. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode penelitian deskriptif kuantitatif. Metode pengumpulan data yang digunakan yakni kuisioner atau angket. Teknik analisi data yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini yaitu analisis statistik deskriptif, Teknik Analisis Regresi dan pengujian hipotesis.Hasil dari penelitian ini yakni : bahwa pengaruh game online (X) terhadap cara belajar mahasiswa (Y) pada taraf t hitung > t tabel dan hasil uji korelasi rxy 0849. Game online berpengaruh signifikan terhadap cara belajar. Ini dapat dibuktikan dari hasil nilai Fhitung sebesar 4.113 dan nilai signifikansi Ftabel 0.00 < 0.05. Besarnya koefisien determinasi sebesar 0.79 atau 79%. Hal ini berarti 79% pengaruh game online terhadap cara belajar mahasiswa sedangkan untuk selebihnya 21% dipengaruhi oleh variabel lain yang tidak diteliti oleh penelitian ini.   Kata kunci : Game Online, Cara Belajar Mahasiswa THE INFLUENCE OF ONLINE GAMES ON HOW STUDENTS STUDYING MECHANICAL ENGINEERING AT MANADO STATE UNIVERSITY ABSTRACT Manado university's advanced mechanical engineering student who is a migrant child has now had a very real impact on online gaming. It is evident from the many students participating in the game that researchers as active university students have received a wealth of data that students studying engineering at manado state university who actively play have a learning ability that is less active in learning. The study USES a quantitative descriptive study method. The data collection method used was "questionnaire or angket." The data analysis used in the study are descriptive statistical analysis, regression analysis and hypothetical testing. The results of this study are: that how online games affect students' learning (y) at a level of t count > t tables and rxy 0849 cordating results. Online games significantly affect how to learn. This can be verified from the results of the ftable value of 4,113 and the significance of ftable 0.00. Critical coefficiencies by 0.79 or 79%. This means 79% of the impact online games have on student learning while for the rest 21% are affected by other variables not examined by this study. Key words : Game Online, student learning

It recalls the passionate egalitarian beliefs that propelled The OU from the start, that continue to sustain it and that flow through the chapters. Each chapter is briefly introduced and the gift of the (prisoner) artist who provided the front cover image is celebrated.

Public relations theory is the foundation for relations practices which management uses to accrue maximum benefits to all functions of the organization. Through a knowledgeable study of all facts concerning a given situation, a plan can be developed to achieve the end result of good relations. The problem of relations with the many publics in the everyday workings of a sanitarian or sanitation organization cannot be met or dismissed by a press release or speech. To develop a sound public relations program, the principles of theory must be considered. This paper has discussed three major principles. These are (a) consideration of fundamental matters, (b) organization involvement in decisions, and (c) evaluating the public interest. If these points are balanced with the actions of an organization, as a philosophy of management, the results will bring about the most favorable relations possible.

The currency of the engineering profession is knowledge. The knowledge gained by an engineer immersed in public policy is commonly undervalued because it is seen as not being applicable to the technical discipline. However, knowledge of the policymaking process is exactly what is needed to understand and communicate technical data in a way that decision-makers can leverage in developing prudent policies. So exposure to policy in effect enables engineers to apply their knowledge for public benefit — the genesis of the engineering discipline. This is only one of the many compelling reasons why interaction between engineers and policymakers should be valued by industry and academia. It was a motivating factor for two faculty members who recently made a temporary transition away from their respective universities to pursue Science and Technology fellowships in Washington, DC. Both individuals had tremendous experiences, professionally and personally, and encourage other engineers to make a similar adventure in Washington, DC one of their career goals.

Machines make all industrial artifacts and mechanical products in the world. In this 21th century, people enjoy mechanical products that made lives well and convenient. However, creating a useful mechanical product mainly relies on academic development and technology innovation especially in the field of mechanical engineering. This special issue focuses on the innovation and application of mechanical engineering, which covers a wide range of fundamental studies, technical innovation, and industrial applications by applying the knowledge of mechanical-related approaches, processes and techniques. It presents 33 selected papers (Part 1) from the 3rd International Conference on Engineering and Technology Innovation (ICETI 2014) which was held from October 31 to November 4, 2014, in Kenting, Taiwan. These selected papers underwent a complete Transactions of the Canadian Society for Mechanical Engineering peer-review. Acceptance in this special issue was based on completion of the reviewers recommended and mandatory changes and final examination by the Guest Editor. We thank all of the authors who have submitted their work for publication in this special issue. We are also grateful to the many reviewers that provided their time and expertise in providing valuable peer review. Special thanks also go to Professor Paul J. Zsombor-Murray, Editor of Transactions of the Canadian Society for Mechanical Engineering, who had the foresight to support a special issue in this research area. Chapter 10 traces the dramatic and sustained burst in anti-natalist activity within the developing world over the last forty years. Between 1976 and 2011 the number of least-developed states that expressed a need to reduce the fertility of their citizens leapt from 31 to 92 percent. This chapter explores the many mechanisms the population giants of the developing world have used to try to control the procreative practices of their citizens and craft policies believed to best address the common problems of underdevelopment, poverty, and state weakness. Moreover, counterfactual cases, such as the Palestinians, are explored to highlight the discursive, nonobjective nature of state reactions to demographic realities. This chapter adds to the debate concerning the merits and boundaries of efforts to shape the reproductive outcomes of millions of individuals living in the global South.

This article investigates the figure of Elisabetta Caminer Turra (1751–96) and the role she played in the Italian reception of English novels during the eighteenth century. One key characteristic of Caminer Turra’s editorship of Giornale enciclopedico (1774–82), Nuovo giornale enciclopedico (1783–89), and Nuovo giornale enciclopedico d’Italia (1790–96) was the diffusion of foreign culture in the Italian peninsula: during her career she always aimed at the renovation and improvement of the intellectual milieu of the time. Caminer Turra’s journals played an important role in the Italian reception of foreign literature during the second half of the eighteenth century. The goal of this study is to show (a) how English novels were reviewed, censored, and introduced to the Italian public through the many articles, reviews, and announcements that appeared in the journals she supervised, and (b) to examine, from a stylistic, thematic, and political point of view, the ways in which she played her role as maker of culture and arbiter of taste, in order to clarify the importance of her function as a cultural mediator.

Clinicians and researchers in neurorehabilitation continue to have difficulties with reporting and describing the many active components used within physical therapy interventions. People with neurological conditions can present with cognitive, perceptual, behavioural and physical impairments that require individual consideration within their training program. Current knowledge from the areas from motor control theories, neuroscience and clinical evidence from neurological and musculoskeletal rehabilitation all inform the design of movement training programs. Such a diverse field of theoretical, scientific and clinical knowledge makes it difficult to agree upon a consistent way to label the many components relevant to training. This article proposes the use of ten guiding principles of movement training that can provide terminology for use in neurorehabilitation clinical practice that could be used by both professionals and individuals with neurological conditions. The ten Movement Training Principles could potentially improve interdisciplinary collaboration, enhance teaching of the clinical reasoning process and drive innovation for future therapies.

Abstract The guiding principles adopted for teaching the Comprehensive Mechanical Design course in the Department of Mechanical Engineering of Auburn University are presented. These were introduced to better serve the need for well-trained engineering personnel, where technical skills must be combined with good communication and management skills.
