Design Analysis of a Micro Gas Turbine Combustion Chamber Burning Natural Gas

Gas turbines are reliable energy conversion systems since they are able to operate with variable fuels and independently from seasonal natural changes. Within that reality, micro gas turbines have been increasing the importance of its usage on the onsite generation. Comparatively, less research has been done, leaving more room for improvements in this class of gas turbines. Focusing on the study of a flexible micro turbine set, this work is part of the development of a low cost electric generation micro turbine, which is capable of burning natural gas, LPG and ethanol. It is composed of an originally automotive turbocompressor, a combustion chamber specifically designed for this application, as well as a single stage axial power turbine. The combustion chamber is a reversed flow type and has a swirl stabilized combustor. This paper is dedicated to the diagnosis of the natural gas combustion in this chamber using computational fluid dynamics techniques compared to measured experimental data of temperature inside the combustion chamber. The study emphasizes the near inner wall temperature, turbine inlet temperature and dilution holes effectiveness. The calculation was conducted with the Reynolds Stress turbulence model coupled with the conventional β-PDF equilibrium along with mixture fraction transport combustion model. Thermal radiation was also considered. Reasonable agreement between experimental data and computational simulations was achieved, providing confidence on the phenomena observed on the simulations, which enabled the design improvement suggestions and analysis included in this work.

Micro gas turbines could be profitably used, for distributed energy production, also exploiting low calorific value biomass-derived fuels, obtained by means of integrated pyrolysis and/or gasification processes. These synthesis gases show significant differences with respect to natural gas (in terms of composition, low calorific value, hydrogen content, tar and particulate matter content) that may turn into ignition problems, combustion instabilities, difficulties in emission control and fouling. CFD simulation of the combustion chamber is a key instrument to identify main criticalities arising when using these gases, in order to modify existing geometries and to develop new generation combustion chambers for use with low calorific value gases. This paper describes the numerical activity carried out to analyze the combustion process occurring inside an existing microturbine annular combustor. A CFD study of the combustion process performed with different computational codes is introduced and some preliminary results are reported in the paper. A comparison of results obtained with the different codes is provided, for the reference case of methane combustion. A first evaluation of the pollutant emissions and a comparison with the available experimental data is also provided in the paper, showing in particular a good matching of experimental data on NOx emissions at different load conditions. Moreover, the carried out investigation concerns the case of operation with a syngas fuel derived from pyrolysis of biomass and finally the case of syngas and natural gas co-firing. This combustion condition is simulated with a simple reduced chemical kinetic scheme, in order to assess only the key issues rising with this fuel in comparison with the case of methane combustion. The analysis shows that in case of syngas operation the combustor internal temperature hot spots are reduced and the primary zone flame tends to stabilize closer to the injector, with possible implications on the emission release.

Gas turbines are capable to utlize variety of fuel including natural gas, fuel oils and synthetic gas. It has environmental advantages and thus gas turbines are favourable in the power generating industries. The use of synthetic gas or syngas may reduce the CO2 and NOx emissions. The efficiency of syngas is comparable with natural gas. With the current constrain on the environmental issues, the use of syngas in gas turbines has been increasing. Despite its many advantages, the study on the combustion characteristics still remains a challenge, due to its variety fuel components. This paper aims to discuss the CFD analysis on the flame and flue gas temperature distribution in a full scale microgas turbine operating on syngas. Three cases were simulated with variety of natural gas concentration. A base case firing natural gas (100% methane) was first established using actual operation. Validation on the combustion model is made by comparing the flame temperature distribution of methane with reasonable accuracy. Simulation results with syngas show similar flame temperature distribution as natural gas combustion. The average temperature is much dependent on the composition of methane in syngas. The highest temperature given by syngas is made from the highest methane composiotion.

Five different flame states are identified in a compact combustion chamber that is fired by a 30 kW swirl-stabilized partially premixed natural gas burner working at atmospheric pressure. These flame states include a nozzle-attached tulip shaped flame, a nonattached torroidal-ring shaped flame (SSF) suitable for very low NOx emission in a gas turbine combustor and a Coanda flame (CSF) that clings to the bottom wall of the combustion chamber. Flame state transition is generated by changing the swirl number and by premixing the combustion air with 70% of the natural gas flow. The flame state transition pathways reveal strong hysteresis and bifurcation phenomena. The paper also presents major species concentrations, temperature and velocity profiles of the lifted flame state and the Coanda flame and discusses the mechanisms of flame transition and stabilization.

Abstract With energy shortages and increasing environmental problems, natural gas, as a clean energy, has the advantages of cheap price and large reserves and has become one of the main alternative fuels for marine diesel engines. For large bore natural gas engines, pre-chamber spark plug ignition can be used to increase engine efficiency. The engine mainly relies on the flame ejected from the pre-chamber to ignite the mixture of natural gas and air in the main combustion chamber. The ignition flame in the main combustion chamber is the main factor affecting the combustion process. Although the pre-chamber natural gas engines have been extensively studied, the characteristics of combustion in the pre-chamber and the development of ignition flame in the main combustion chamber have not been fully understood. In this study, a two-zone phenomenological combustion model of pre-chamber spark-ignition natural gas engines is established based on the exchange of mass and energy of the gas flow process in the pre-chamber and the main combustion chamber. The basic characteristics of the developed model are: a spherical flame surface is used to describe the combustion state in the pre-chamber, and according to the turbulent jet theory, the influence of turbulence on the state of the pilot flame is considered based on the Reynolds number. According to the phenomenological model, the time when the flame starts to be injected from the pre-chamber to the main combustion chamber, and the parameters such as the length of the pilot flame are analyzed. The model was verified by experimental data, and the results showed that the calculated values were in good agreement with the experimental values. It provides an effective tool for mastering the law of flame development and supporting the optimization of combustion efficiency.

An analysis is carried out to predict the nature and magnitude of secondary flows induced by temperature gradients in turbomachinery stator and rotor. The effect of this thermal driven secondary flow is severe in gas turbines, due to large temperature gradients that exist at the outlet of the combustion chamber. Secondary flows change the temperature profiles at the exit of the blade row and generate thermal wakes. A method of incorporating these effects into the calculation of gas, blade and casing temperatures in a turbine is demonstrated through an example.

The effect of hydrogen enrichment to natural gas flames was experimentally investigated at atmospheric pressure conditions using flame chemiluminescence imaging, planar laser-induced fluorescence of hydroxyl radicals (OH PLIF), and dynamic pressure monitoring. The experiments were performed using a third generation dry low emission (DLE) burner used in both SGT-700 and SGT-800 industrial gas turbines from Siemens. The burner was mounted in an atmospheric combustion test rig at Siemens with optical access in the flame region. Four different hydrogen enriched natural gas flames were investigated; 0 vol. %, 30 vol. %, 60 vol. %, and 80 vol. % of hydrogen. The results from flame chemiluminescence imaging and OH PLIF show that the size and shape of the flame was clearly affected by hydrogen addition. The flame becomes shorter and narrower when the amount of hydrogen is increased. For the 60 vol. % and 80 vol. % hydrogen flames the flame has moved upstream and the central recirculation zone that anchors the flame has moved upstream the burner exit. Furthermore, the position of the flame front fluctuated more for the full premixed flame with only natural gas as fuel than for the hydrogen enriched flames. Measurements of pressure drop over the burner show an increase with increased hydrogen in the natural gas despite same air flow thus confirming the observation that the flame front moves upstream toward the burner exit and thereby increasing the blockage of the exit. Dynamic pressure measurements in the combustion chamber wall confirms that small amounts of hydrogen in natural gas changes the amplitude of the dynamic pressure fluctuations and initially dampens the axial mode but at higher levels of hydrogen an enhancement of a transversal mode in the combustion chamber at higher frequencies could occur.

The work evaluates the combustion of natural gas in a cylindrical furnace. The Generalized Finite Rate Reaction Model was selected for predicting the reactions. Two situations were considered. In the first case the combustion of the fuel was predicted by a single global reaction, and in the second case a two-step reaction was considered for predicting the combustion process. The conservation equations of mass, momentum, energy and chemical species were solved by the finite volume procedure, with the commercial software FLUENT. The turbulent flow was modeled by employing the two differential equation κ–ε model. The solutions obtained with the two reaction models, for the temperature and species concentration fields, were compared among them and against experimental data available in the literature. It was observed that the two-step reaction model represents better the physical phenomena, showing a better agreement with the experimental data.

A team forms to address the challenge of low cost, low maintenance gas compression that can be quickly ramped up to meet peak demands. The Natural Gas Industry recognizes the importance of efficient, flexible compression equipment for the transmission of gas. In the early 1900s the Gas Industry met its compression objectives with many small reciprocating compressor units. As competition increased, Gas Companies began employing more cost effective larger units 3.7 MW (5,000 bhp) and eventually gas turbines 11+ MW (15,000+ bhp) became the prime mover of choice. While gas fired engine driven compressors are convenient for gas companies; they are becoming increasingly difficult to install. Environmental restrictions have tightened making permitting difficult. The larger gas turbine units seemed a solution because they were the low capital cost prime mover and clean burning. However, gas turbines have not yet achieved the high degree of flexibility and fuel efficiency gas transporters hoped. Flexibility has become an increasingly important issue because of the new “Peaking Power Plants” that are coming online. Gas companies are trying to solve the problem of low cost, low maintenance compression that can be quickly ramped up to meet peak demands. The idea of using electric motors to drive compressors to minimize the environmental, regulatory, and maintenance issues is not new. The idea of installing an electrically powered, highly flexible, efficient, low maintenance compressor unit directly into the pipeline feeding the load, possibly underground where it won’t be seen or heard, is a new and viable way for the gas and electric industries to do business together. This paper examines the application of totally enclosed, variable speed electric motor driven gas compressors to applications requiring completely automated, low maintenance, quick response gas pressure boosters. In this paper we will describe how a natural gas transporter, compressor manufacturer, motor manufacturer, and power company have teamed up to design the world’s first gas compressor that can be installed directly in the pipeline. We will discuss methodologies for installing the proposed compressor, the environmental benefits — no emissions, a small footprint, minimal noise — and the benefit of being able to install compression exactly where it is needed to meet the peaking requirements of today’s new loads.

The paper describes a test facility for small-scale gas turbines, which basically has been designed and assembled at the Institute of Combustion Engines of the Technical University Berlin. The facility exposes ceramic rotor components to the most significant loads that occur during real gas turbine operation in a clearly predefined manner (high circumferential velocities and highest turbine inlet temperatures). The test facility allows the investigation of bladed radial inflow turbine rotors, as well as — in a preceding step — geometrically simplified ceramic or coated metallic rotors. A newly designed, ceramically lined, variable geometry combustion chamber allows turbine inlet temperatures up to 1450°C (2640 F). A fast thermal shock unit (switching time of about 1s), which is integrated into the test facility between the combustion chamber and the turbine scroll, can be used to create, for example, severe transient temperature gradients within the rotor components to simulate gas turbine trip conditions. In order to generate steady state temperature gradients, especially during disk testing, the rotor components can be subjected to an impingement cooling of the rotor back face (uncoated in case of TBC-testing). The test facility is additionally equipped with a non-contact transient temperature measurement system (turbine radiation pyrometry) to determine the test rotor surface temperature distribution during operation. Apart from the possibilities of basic rotor material investigations, the test facility can also be used to automatically generate compressor and turbine performance characteristics maps. The latter might be used to assess the aerodynamic performance of bladed ceramic radial inflow or mixed flow turbine rotors with respect to manufacturing tolerances due to near-net-shape forming processes (e.g., gelcasting or injection molding).

Ground based gas turbines are responsible for generating a significant amount of electric power as well as providing mechanical power for a variety of applications. This is due to their high efficiency, high power density, high reliability, and ability to operate on a wide range of fuels. Due to increasingly stringent air quality requirements, stationary power gas turbines have moved to lean-premixed operation. Lean-premixed operation maintains low combustion temperatures for a given turbine inlet temperature, resulting in low NOx emissions while minimizing emissions of CO and hydrocarbons. In addition, to increase overall cycle efficiency, engines are being operated at higher pressure ratios and/or higher combustor inlet temperatures. Increasing combustor inlet temperatures and pressures in combination with lean-premixed operation leads to increased reactivity of the fuel/air mixture, leading to increased risk of potentially damaging flashback. Curtailing flashback on engines operated on hydrocarbon fuels requires care in design of the premixer. Curtailing flashback becomes more challenging when fuels with reactive components such as hydrogen are considered. Such fuels are gaining interest because they can be generated from both conventional and renewable sources and can be blended with natural gas as a means for storage of renewably generated hydrogen. The two main approaches for coping with flashback are either to design a combustor that is resistant to flashback, or to design one that will not anchor a flame if a flashback occurs. An experiment was constructed to determine the flameholding tendencies of various fuels on typical features found in premixer passage ways (spokes, steps, etc.) at conditions representative of a gas turbine premixer passage way. In the present work tests were conducted for natural gas and hydrogen between 3 and 9 atm, between 530 K and 650K, and free stream velocities from 40 to 100 m/s. Features considered in the present study include a spoke in the center of the channel and a step at the wall. The results are used in conjunction with existing blowoff correlations to evaluate flameholding propensity of these physical features over the range of conditions studied. The results illustrate that correlations that collapse data obtained at atmospheric pressure do not capture trends observed for spoke and wall step features at elevated pressure conditions. Also, a notable fuel compositional effect is observed.
