Abstract On 07.07.1939 the Neuchatel gas turbine passed its performance test under the supervision of Aurel Stodola [1]. This was the world’s first open gas turbine for electric power generation in commercial operation. It launched the past eighty year period of further development and corresponding market growth. The Baden area played an important role. The aim of this paper is to complete the already published comprehensive historical information with two additional aspects especially regarding the second 40 years, in which the author was an involved contemporary witness: The first is how the predominance of something like a local spirit integrated both a considerable share of foreign engineering staff and also the changes of the ownership of the technology from Brown Boveri to ABB and then to Alstom and recently to GE and Ansaldo. The second aspect is the inside view of the author, who has both shaped and suffered these gas turbine developments in several job positions allowing direct contact to both top management and shop floor workers. These two aspects will be integrated in the historical sequence. As a rule the roles of the persons acting after the seventies are given but not their names. The history of the involved companies has caught much attention of media and writers. After the formation of ABB it was used for both celebrating outstanding management performance and despicable management mistake. I will add as an engineer my insider view to this and mention the corresponding book references. This paper is limited to the mainstream open GT development for space reasons and therefore omits other interesting side developments of BBC such as closed Helium cycles, IGCC applications and compressed air energy storage as well as the other products of BBC, which all played a role in equalizing the business cycles.

Celebrating the 30th anniversary of Ukraine's independence, it is important to remember the historical achievements of Ukrainian science, to honor the heroes of the science of the past and to draw inspiration from their achievements for the development of science of the future. In this regard, the history of medicine, as a special academic discipline, plays a vital role an important academic and civic role, as it helps to trace the medical scientific achievements of the past and draw conclusions about their strengths and priorities for future national and international growth and development. Analyzing the scientific strengths and priorities of science and medicine in Ukraine, it is safe to say that biomedical gerontology is one of the most important scientific and historical values and priorities of Ukraine on a global scale. There are good reasons to continue and develop this tradition, building on the strengths that exist, drawing inspiration from the past and looking to the future. Currently, the development of biomedical gerontology is becoming increasingly important for Ukraine, given the rapid aging of the country's population. The resulting economic and social problems are related to the aging population, which puts biomedical gerontology as a discipline that seeks solutions to achieve healthy and productive longevity, at the forefront of social significance, demanding further development and support of this field for the sake of internal national stability, and to preserve the country's international contribution. It is hoped that the outstanding history of biomedical gerontology in Ukraine, its honorable historical place in national development and international cooperation, will inspire further growing support and development of this field in Ukraine and abroad.

Abstract The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has seen significant transformation in power generation in the past 10 years. There has been an increase in the number of F-class combined cycle power plants being developed and brought into commercial operation. There has also been a shift to the use of natural gas as primary fuel. At the same time, there has been an interest in switching the back-up fuel for new power plants from refined distillates to domestic crude oils. Both Arabian Super Light (ASL) and Arabian Extra Light (AXL) have been proposed for use in new F-class gas turbine combined cycle power plants. This paper provides details on the combustion evaluations of ASL and AXL, as well as the first field usage of ASL in a gas turbine.

In the past several years heavy emphasis has been placed on all-digital or hybrid simulation techniques in the analy sis of dynamic systems. To some the unmodified analog computer might seem as anachronistic as the narrow-gauge steam locomotive. Often, however, the demon Economics steps in; at this time the analog computer presents a most satisfactory compromise between accuracy, flexibility and cost. This article, Simulating a jet gas turbine with an analog computer, is a "case history" of such a dynamic system study. The prospect of an undetermined number of explo ratory runs, coupled with a limited foreknowledge of the system components, made the use of the analog computer (an EAI 31-R) attractive. With Battelle's current open-shop policy on analog computer use, the computer became, in effect, an extension of the engineer's slide rule. In spite of being Little Orphan Analog in a digital world, the machine performed admirably!

One of the most effective ways of psycho-prophylactic work with offenders is to work with the subjective picture of the life history of individual development, which unfolds in real space and time. Subject of research – regularities of manifestation of the subjective picture of life path at the persons consisting on the account in UII, and their influence on the further development and formation of personality. The basis for the studies provided PKU "Criminal – Executive inspection" of the FPS of Russia in Moscow. The sample consisted of 50 men aged 20 to 62 years, consisting on the account in UII. Of these, 25 persons are registered under article 228 of the criminal code, and 25 – under article 159 of the criminal code. Each convict, during the conversation, assess your psychological age, the intensity of each of the five years of his life, painted "Circles's Cottle's", were isolated 7 – 8 the most significant events of the past, as well as determined plans for the future. The study revealed similarities and differences in subjective picture of life path in each study group. Based on the results of the study were proposed measures for psycho-prophylactic work with these categories of persons.

It is generally accepted that history is an element of culture and the historian a member of society, thus, in Croce's aphorism, that the only true history is contemporary history. It follows from this that when there occur great changes in the contemporary scene, there must also be great changes in historiography, that the vision not merely of the present but also of the past must change.

It is perhaps one of the most important characteristics of the past decade in astronomy that the evolution of some major classes of astronomical objects has become accessible to detailed research. The theory of the evolution of individual stars has developed into a substantial body of quantitative investigations. The evolution of galaxies, particularly of our own, has clearly become a subject for serious research. Even the history of the solar system, this close-by intriguing puzzle, may soon make the transition from being a subject of speculation to being a subject of detailed study in view of the fast flow of new data obtained with new techniques, including space-craft.

Purpose The current “specific language impairment” and “developmental language disorder” discussion might lead to important changes in how we refer to children with language disorders of unknown origin. The field has seen other changes in terminology. This article reviews many of these changes. Method A literature review of previous clinical labels was conducted, and possible reasons for the changes in labels were identified. Results References to children with significant yet unexplained deficits in language ability have been part of the scientific literature since, at least, the early 1800s. Terms have changed from those with a neurological emphasis to those that do not imply a cause for the language disorder. Diagnostic criteria have become more explicit but have become, at certain points, too narrow to represent the wider range of children with language disorders of unknown origin. Conclusions The field was not well served by the many changes in terminology that have transpired in the past. A new label at this point must be accompanied by strong efforts to recruit its adoption by clinical speech-language pathologists and the general public.

The burden of caregivers has been intensively researched for the past 30 years and has resulted in a multitude of individual findings. This review illustrates the significance of the hypothetical construct of perceived burden for the further development and design of the homecare situation. Following explanations regarding the term informal caregiver, we derive the construct burden from its conceptual association with the transactional stress model of Lazarus and Folkman. Once the extent and characteristics of burden have been set forth, we then present the impact of perceived burden as the care situation. The question of predictors of burden will lead into the last section from which implications can be derived for homecare and relief of caregivers.

Abstract. Background: Medical students are at high risk of suicidal ideation. Aim: We aimed to obtain information on suicidal ideation among medical students in Dammam located in the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia. Method: This cross-sectional study was conducted at the College of Medicine affiliated with Imam Abdulrahman Bin Faisal University in the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia. Suicidal ideation in the past 12 months was assessed based on responses to four questions in the depression subscale of the General Health Questionnaire 28 (GHQ-28). In addition, data were collected to examine the association of suicidal ideation with various factors. Results: We found that 1 in 3 medical students in the study had suicidal ideation in the past 12 months, while around 40% had lifetime suicidal ideation. Suicidal ideation was associated with feelings of parental neglect, history of physical abuse, and dissatisfaction with academic performance. Limitations: The cross-sectional nature of this study limits its ability to determine causality regarding suicidal ideation. Conclusion: These rates are considerably high when compared with rates from studies in other countries around the world. This study provides a reference in the field of suicidology for this region of Saudi Arabia.
