CFD Modelling of the Effects of Injection Timing on the Combustion Process and Emissions in an HSDI Diesel Engine

High-Speed Direct Injection (HSDI) diesel engines are increasingly used in automotive applications due to superior fuel economy. An advanced CFD simulation has been carried out to analyze the effect of injection timing on combustion process and emission characteristics in a four valves 2.0L Ford diesel engine. The calculation was performed from intake valve closing (IVC) to exhaust valve opening (EVO) at constant speed of 1600 rpm. Since the work was concentrated on the spray injection, mixture formation and combustion process, only a 60° sector mesh was employed for the calculations. For combustion modeling, an improved version of the Coherent Flame Model (ECFM-3Z) has been applied accompanied with advanced models for emission modeling. The results of simulation were compared against experimental data. Good agreement of calculated and measured in-cylinder pressure trace and pollutant formation trends were observed for all investigated operating points. In addition, the results showed that the current CFD model can be applied as a beneficial tool for analyzing the parameters of the diesel combustion under HSDI operating condition.

Diesel engine combustion modeling presents a challenging task as the injection starts with the spray formation and breakup of spray into droplets. The computation involved in predicting the in-cylinder fluid mixture during combustion using eulerian and lagrangian approach is rather a cumbersome task. In this work, 3D-CFD computations are performed to understand the behaviour of spray droplet variables on combustion process and emissions in a direct injection diesel engine. The study involves the computation of turbulent flow-field quantities, modelling various processes such as fuel spray distribution, atomization, collision, evaporation, combustion and pollutant formation using a commercial CFD code. Grid independence and time independent studies are carried out for finding the optimum grid size and time step. The numerical results predicted using CFD code is validated with the experimental data available from the literature. The process of combustion and emission characteristics is investigated numerically with respect to spray characteristics. The work is further extended to study the effect of swirl ratio and injection timing on droplet parameters.

This paper describes various aspects of cylinder head design with particular consideration of layout and number of valves, valve actuation, port selection strategy, fuel injection systems and cylinder head construction.

The pilot injection strategy is a widely used approach for reducing the noise of the combustion process in direct injection diesel engines. In the last generation of automotive diesel engines up to several pilot injections could occur to better control the rate of heat release (ROHR) in the cylinder as well as the pollutant formation. However, determination of the timing and duration for each pilot injection needs to be precisely optimised. In this paper an experimental study of the pilot injection strategy was conducted on a direct injection diesel engine. Single and double pilot injection strategy was studied. The engine rated power is 100 kW at 4000 rpm while the rated torque is 320 Nm at 2000 rpm. An engine operating point determined by the rotation speed of 1400 rpm and torque of 100 Nm was chosen. The pilot and pre-injection timing was widely varied in order to study the influence on the combustion process as well as on the fuel consumption.

Effects of combustion chamber geometry and initial mixture distribution on the combustion process were investigated in a direct-injection diesel engine. In the engine experiment, a high squish combustion chamber with a squish lip could reduce both NOx and particulate emissions with retarded injection timing. According to the results of CFD computation and phenomenological modeling, the high squish combustion chamber with a central pip is effective to keep the combusting mixture under the squish lip until the end of combustion and the combustion region forms rich and highly turbulent atmosphere. This kind of mixture distribution tends to reduce initial burning, resulting in restraint of NOx emission while keeping low particulate emission.

The factors influencing premixed burning and the importance of premixed burning on the exhaust emissions from a small high-speed direct-injection diesel engine were investigated. The characteristics of premixed and diffusion burning were examined using a single-zone heat-release analysis. The mass of fuel burned in premixed combustion was found to be linearly related to the product of engine speed and ignition-delay time and to be essentially independent of the total amount of fuel injected. Accordingly, the premixed-burned fraction increased with increasing engine speed, with decreasing fuel-air ratio and with retarding injection timing. The hydrocarbon emissions did not correlate well with the premixed-burned fraction. In contrast, the oxides of nitrogen emissions were found to increase with decreasing premixed-burned fraction, indicating that diffusion burning, and not premixed burning, is the primary source of oxides of nitrogen emissions.

The paper describes the development of a high-speed direct injection (HSDI) diesel engine suitable for passenger car applications. The evolution from a low emissions medium-speed engine, through a four-cylinder 2.3 litre research engine, into a four-cylinder 2.0 litre production engine is presented. The challenge to the engineer has been to develop the HSDI engine to operate with acceptable noise, emissions, smoke and driveability over the wide speed range (up to 5000 r/min) required for passenger cars. The key element in this task was the optimization of the combustion system and fuel injection equipment. The HSDI is shown to have a significant fuel economy advantage over the prechamber indirect injection (IDI) engine. Future developments of the fuel injection system are described which will further enhance the HSDI engine and provide additional noise and emissions control.

An optically accessible high-speed direct-injection diesel engine was used to study the effects of injection angles on low-sooting combustion. A digital high-speed camera was employed to capture the entire cycle combustion and spray evolution processes under seven operating conditions including post-top-dead centre (TDC) injection and pre-TDC injection strategies. The nitrogen oxide (NO x) emissions were also measured in the exhaust pipe. In-cylinder pressure data and heat release rate calculations were conducted. All the cases show premixed combustion features. For post-TDC injection cases, a large amount of fuel deposition is seen for a narrower-injection-angle tip, i.e. the 70° tip, and ignition is observed near the injector tip in the centre of the bowl, while for a wider-injection-angle tip, namely a 110° tip, ignition occurs near the spray tip in the vicinity of the bowl wall. The combustion flame is near the bowl wall and at the central region of the bowl for the 70° tip. However, the flame is more distributed and centralized for the 110° tip. Longer spray penetration is found for the pre-TDC injection timing cases. Liquid fuel impinges on the bowl wall or on the piston top and a fuel film is formed. Ignition for all the pre-TDC injection cases occur in a distributed way in the piston bowl. Two different combustion modes are observed for the pre-TDC injection cases including a homogeneous bulky combustion flame at earlier crank angles and a heterogeneous film combustion mode with luminous sooting flame at later crank angles. In terms of soot emissions, NO x emissions, and fuel efficiency, results show that the late post-TDC injection strategy gives the best performance.

Reactivity controlled compression ignition (RCCI) engine give advantages over conventional diesel engine with the promising engine power and good control on NOx and soot emission. The trend of the RCCI concept is still new and Is very important to control the ignition in order to control the combustion progress and emission. The objective of this study is to provide data on the combustion characteristics and emission of diesel as high reactive, and ethanol as the low reactive fuel in the RCCI engine. The engine speed and injection timing were varied. Simulation work was conducted by using the Converge CFD software based on the Yanmar TF90 diesel engine parameter. Results show that operating the engine at low speed resulting in better engine performance and low carbon emissions due to the sufficient oxygen contents. For the high-speed engine, advancing the injection timing improves the fuel and air reactivity and steeper the equivalence ratio gradient, which result in a complete combustion process.

Advance high speed direct injection diesel engines apply high injection pressures, exhaust gas recirculation (EGR), injection timing and swirl ratios to control the combustion process in order to meet the strict emission standards. All these parameters affect, in different ways, the ignition delay (ID) which has an impact on premixed, mixing controlled and diffusion controlled combustion fractions and the resulting engine-out emissions. In this study, the authors derive a new correlation to predict the ID under the different operating conditions in advanced diesel engines. The model results are validated by experimental data in a single-cylinder, direct injection diesel engine equipped with a common rail injection system at different speeds, loads, EGR ratios and swirl ratios. Also, the model is used to predict the performance of two other diesel engines under cold starting conditions.
