An Origami-Based Tunable Helmholtz Resonator for Noise Control: Introduction of the Concept and Preliminary Results

A Helmholtz resonator is a passive acoustic device that enables noise reduction at a given frequency. This frequency is directly related to the volume of the resonator and to the size of the neck that couples the resonator to the acoustic domain. In other words, controlling the volume of the cavity allows a real time tunability of the device, which means noise control at any desired frequency. To that end, we propose an Origami-based tunable Helmholtz resonator. The design is inspired from the well-known origami base, waterbomb. Such foldable structures offer a wide range of volume shifting which corresponds to a frequency shifting in the application of interest. The foldability of the structure is first investigated. Then, a series of numerical simulations and experimental tests were preformed are presented, in order to explore the capabilities of this origami structures in acoustic control. A shift in the frequency domain of up to 197 Hz (131–328 Hz) was achieved in an experimental testing using 3D printed rigid devices.

Abstract This paper presents typical methods for conducting experimental tests on main shaft slide bearings. There are described their possible testing capabilities, advantages, drawbacks and limitations. Various testing methods were analyzed to find a solution able of providing a wide range of possible investigations at possibly acceptable limitations.

Natural rocks can be heterogeneous due to complex diagenetic processes that affect mineralogy and pore architecture. Correlation of geomechanical and transport properties of rocks in three dimensions can lead to large variances in data when tested experimentally. 3D-printing of rock analogues in sand is a promising alternative for experimental testing that can be used to calibrate variables during geotechnical testing. While 3D-printed sand is a homogeneous material, the parameters for creating grain packing and pore infill can be tuned to mimic specific geomechanical and transport properties. Initially, 3D-printed specimens have a low density due to a loose distribution of grains. Herein, we present our efforts at increasing the density through incorporating a roller in the printing process to compact individual layers. We also propose introduction of a more heterogeneous sand mixture that encompasses a wide range of grain-size distributions. Lastly, a discussion between binder saturation (that infills the pore space) of 3D-printed specimens and the axial strength, dimensional control, and porosity is described within. 3D printing of rock analogues is critical in pursuing rigorous destructive tests required for geotechnical and geological engineering because it can provide repeatable, controlled data on rock properties.

This paper describes a novel method for the experimental validation of numerically optimised turbomachinery components. In the field of additive manufacturing, numerical models still need to be improved, especially with the experimental data. The paper presents the operational characteristics of a compressor wheel, measured during experimental research. The validation process included conducting a computational flow analysis and experimental tests of two compressor wheels: The aluminium wheel and the 3D printed wheel (made of a polymer material). The chosen manufacturing technology and the results obtained made it possible to determine the speed range in which the operation of the tested machine is stable. In addition, dynamic destructive tests were performed on the polymer disc and their results were compared with the results of the strength analysis. The tests were carried out at high rotational speeds (up to 120,000 rpm). The results of the research described above have proven the utility of this technology in the research and development of high-speed turbomachines operating at speeds up to 90,000 rpm. The research results obtained show that the technology used is suitable for multi-variant optimization of the tested machine part. This work has also contributed to the further development of numerical models.

Application of Additive Manufacturing (AM) has significantly increased in the past few years. AM also known as three-dimensional (3D) printing has been currently used in fabrication of prototypes and end-use products. Considering the new applications of additively manufactured components, it is necessary to study structural details of these parts. In the current study, influence of a post-processing on the mechanical properties of 3D-printed parts has been investigated. To this aim, Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS) material was used to produce test coupons based on the Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) process. More in deep, a device was designed and fabricated to fix imperfection and provide smooth surfaces on the 3D-printed ABS specimens. Later, original and treated specimens were subjected to a series of tensile loads, three-point bending tests, and water absorption tests. The experimental tests indicated fracture load in untreated dog-bone shaped specimen was 2026.1 N which was decreased to 1951.7 N after surface treatment. Moreover, the performed surface treatment was lead and decrease in tensile strength from 29.37 MPa to 26.25 MPa. Comparison of the results confirmed effects of the surface modification on the fracture toughness of the examined semi-circular bending components. Moreover, a 3D laser microscope was used for visual investigation of the specimens. The documented results are beneficial for next designs and optimization of finishing processes.

AbstractShallow water acoustics provide a means for monitoring and surveillance of near-shore environments. This paper describes the current and future capabilities of the low- to high-frequency Hawaii Experimental Acoustics Range (HEAR) that was designed to facilitate a wide range of different shallow water acoustics experiments and allow researchers from various institutions to test various array components and configurations. HEAR is a portable facility that consists of multiple hydrophones (12‐16) cabled independently to a common central node. The design allows for variable array configurations and deployments in three modes: experimental (off boats and piers), autonomous, and cabled. An application of HEAR is illustrated by the results from a deployment at Makai Research Pier, Oahu, Hawaii. In this deployment, HEAR was configured as a long-baseline range of two volumetric subarrays to study passive acoustic tracking capabilities in a shallow water environment.

As a general trend, in order to reduce material consumption or to reduce the mass of the structures, composite floor slabs solutions are used to achieve large spans floor slabs. This solutions led to floors sensitive to vibrations induced generally by human activities. As a verification of the design concepts of the composite floors, usually, it is recommended a further examination of the floor after completion by experimental tests. Although the experimental values of the dynamic response of the floor are uniquely determined, the processing can take two directions of evaluation. The first direction consist in determining the dynamic characteristics of the floor and their comparison with the design values. Another way that can be followed in the processing of the experimental results is to consider the human perception and comfort to the vibration on floors. The paper aims to present a case study on a composite floor, with steel beams and concrete slab, tested on-site. Both aspects of data processing are analyzed, in terms of the structural element, and in terms of the effect on human perception and comfort. Experimentally obtained values for the dynamic characteristics of the floor are compared with numerical values from finite element analysis, while the second type of characteristic values are compared with various human comfort threshold values found in international standards.

The impedance of a passive noise control device is strictly positive real, if the device is installed in noise fields with weak mean flows. Passive noise control devices are, therefore, more reliable than active ones. Active control may be applied to a Helmholtz resonator to introduce electronic resonance. It will affect the impedance Zact of the resonator. A controller may be designed such that (a) Zact is small and resistive at some tunable frequencies; and (b) Re{Zact}⩾0 in the entire frequency range of interest. If criterion (a) is satisfied, the active resonator can suppress duct noise at tunable frequencies. It is difficult to design a controller to satisfy criterion (b) because parameters of the controller depend on acoustic parameters of the noise field. A new method is proposed here to design an active controller to meet both criteria simultaneously. The satisfaction of criterion (b) implies a positive real Zact and a robust active resonator with respect to parameter variation in the noise field. Experimental results are presented to verify the performance of the active resonator.

An experimental investigation and a burning-rate analysis have been performed on a production 1.4 liter CNG (compressed natural gas) engine fueled with methane-hydrogen blends. The engine features a pent-roof combustion chamber, four valves per cylinder and a centrally located spark plug. The experimental tests have been carried out in order to quantify the cycle-to-cycle and the cylinder-to-cylinder combustion variation. Therefore, the engine has been equipped with four dedicated piezoelectric pressure transducers placed on each cylinder and located by the spark plug. At each test point, in-cylinder pressure, fuel consumption, induced air mass flow rate, pressure and temperature at different locations on the engine intake and exhaust systems as well as ‘engine-out’ pollutant emissions have been measured. The signals correlated to the engine operation have been acquired by means of a National Instruments PXI-DAQ system and a home developed software. The acquired data have then been processed through a combustion diagnostic tool resulting from the integration of an original multizone thermodynamic model with a CAD procedure for the evaluation of the burned-gas front geometry. The diagnostic tool allows the burning velocities to be computed. The tests have been performed over a wide range of engine speeds, loads and relative air-fuel ratios (up to the lean operation). For stoichiometric operation, the addition of hydrogen to CNG has produced a bsfc reduction ranging between 2 to 7% and a bsTHC decrease up to the 40%. These benefits have appeared to be even higher for lean mixtures. Moreover, hydrogen has shown to significantly enhance the combustion process, thus leading to a sensibly lower cycle-to-cycle variability. As a matter of fact, hydrogen addition has generally resulted into extended operation up to RAFR = 1.8. Still, a discrepancy in the abovementioned conclusions was observed depending on the engine cylinder considered.

This work focuses on the issues to deal with when approaching experimental testing of structures equipped with semiactive control (SA) systems. It starts from practical experience authors gained in a recent wide campaign on a large scale steel frame structure provided with a control system based on magnetorheological dampers. The latter are special devices able to achieve a wide range of physical behaviours using low-power electrical currents. Experimental activities involving the use of controllable devices require special attention in solving specific aspects that characterize each of the three phases of the SA control loop: acquisition, processing, and command. Most of them are uncommon to any other type of structural testing. This paper emphasizes the importance of the experimental assessment of SA systems and shows how many problematic issues likely to happen in real applications are also present when testing these systems experimentally. This paper highlights several problematic aspects and illustrates how they can be addressed in order to achieve a more realistic evaluation of the effectiveness of SA control solutions. Undesired and unavoidable effects like delays and control malfunction are also remarked. A discussion on the way to reduce their incidence is also offered.

Abstract. The study of the deep structure of the Earth's crust is of great interest for both applied (e.g. mineral exploration) and scientific research. For this the electromagnetic (EM) studies which enable one to construct the distribution of electrical conductivity in the Earth's crust are of great use. The most common method of EM exploration is magnetotelluric sounding (MT). This passive method of research uses a wide range of natural geomagnetic variations as a powerful source of electromagnetic induction in the Earth, producing telluric current variations there. It includes the measurements of variations of natural electric and magnetic fields in orthogonal directions at the surface of the Earth. By this, the measurements of electric fields are much more complicated metrological processes, and, namely, they limit the precision of MT prospecting. This is especially complicated at deep sounding when measurements of long periods are of interest. The increase in the accuracy of the electric field measurement can significantly improve the quality of MT data. Because of this, the development of a new version of an instrument for the measurements of electric fields at MT – both electric field sensors and the electrometer – with higher levels relative to the known instrument parameter level – was initiated. The paper deals with the peculiarities of this development and the results of experimental tests of the new sensors and electrometers included as a unit in the long-period magnetotelluric station LEMI-420 are given.
