Comparative Tribological Behavior of TiN-, CrN-, ZrN-, and MoN -Cu Based Nanocomposite Coatings

Nanocomposite structures composed of hard and soft phases are very promising candidates for tribological applications involving both dry and lubricated sliding. This study aims to compare the wear behavior of copper doped hard nanocomposite nitride coatings under dry and lubricated sliding conditions. These nanocomposite coatings are produced in a cathodic arc-based hybrid PVD coating system and their mechanical and structural properties are fully characterized using electron microscopy and other relevant techniques. Tribological tests were performed in pin on disc and reciprocating wear test machines under dry and lubricated sliding conditions. The differences observed in the tribological behavior of nanocomposite coatings are discussed by taking into consideration the structure and mechanical properties of the coatings and the chemical character of the tribo films formed on sliding surfaces during wear testing.

AbstractIn this study, Hardox 450 and HiTuf steels were boronized by pack-boriding method at 800, 900, and 1000∘C for 5 h. The phases, microstructure, hardness, and wear behavior of boride layers formed on the surface of samples were investigated using XRD, SEM, Micro-Vickers hardness testers, and a pin-on-disc tribotester, respectively. XRD analysis showed that both FeB and Fe2B phases were formed in the borided area of Hardox 450 steel, but only Fe2B phase occurred in the boride layer of the HiTuf steel. Micro-Vickers hardness results indicated that the hardness values of the boride layer decreased from the column-shaped structure to towards the matrix in both of Hardox 450 and HiTuf steels. Furthermore, the wear test results showed the coefficients of friction (COF) decreased significantly in the borided samples. The COF of the unborided Hardox 450 steel was reduced considerably from 0.29 to 0.02 by boriding treatment. Similarly, the COF of unborided HiTuf steel was significantly diminished from 0.16 to 0.04 by boriding treatment. In conclusion, the results of this study have indicated that the wear resistance of Hardox 450 and HiTuf steels can be improved by pack-boriding.

In the present study, the statistical analysis on tribological behavior of RZ5/TiB2 magnesium-based metal matrix composites is carried out using Taguchi design and analysis of variance (ANOVA) technique. Taguchi analysis using signal-to-noise ratio indicates that the sliding distance and wt.% TiB2 are the most significant factors in evaluating weight loss and coefficient of friction, respectively. The regression equation is formulated utilizing the ANOVA technique to study the output responses based on the input abrasive wear test experimental results. The regression equation is validated through a comprehensive study taking a series of abrasive wear tests and indicates the percentage deviation of regression modeling is in the range of ± 10%. The individual and combined effect of wear parameters on tribological behavior are investigated through the main effect plots and response surface plots. The micrograph of the worn surface of RZ5/TiB2 composites is studied using field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM), indicating the formation of an oxide layer on the worn surface.

This work is a contribution in analyzing structure, tribological behavior and corrosion of AISI L6 hardened tool steel. Structural characterization and tribological behavior of steel were investigated using Optical Microscopy (OM), Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), wear testing by friction on a pin-on-disc Tribometer and corrosion by potentiodynamic polarization. Comparing to the as-received steel, hardening has generated a fine martensitic microstructure causing a 1.5 times hardness increase. Hardening has contributed to improvement of wear resistance as the coefficient of friction has decreased from 0.86 to 0.67μ. An increase in corrosion resistance was observed after hardening treatment.

Purpose Aluminium is the most preferred material in engineering structural components because of its excellent properties. Furthermore, the properties of aluminium may be enhanced through metal matrix composites and an in-depth investigation on the evolved properties is needed in view of metallurgical, mechanical and tribological aspects. The purpose of this study is to explore the effect of TiC addition on the tribological behavior of aluminium composites. Design/methodology/approach Aluminium metal matrix composites at different weight percentage of titanium carbide were produced through powder metallurgy. Produced composites were subjected to sliding wear test under dry condition through Taguchi’s L9 orthogonal design. Findings Optimal process condition to achieve the minimum wear rate was identified though the main effect plot. Sliding velocity was identified as the most dominating factor in the wear resistance. Practical implications The production of components with improved properties is promoted efficiently and economically by synthesizing the composite via powder metallurgy. Originality/value Though the investigations on the wear behavior of aluminium composites are analyzed, reinforcement types and the mode of fabrication have their significance in the metallurgical and mechanical properties. Thus, the produced component needs an in-detail study on the property evolution.

Abstract Electroless Ni–B–W coating is deposited on low carbon steel in an alkaline sodium borohydride-reduced electroless bath. The mechanical and tribological properties of such coatings are much necessary to be assessed to carry out application-based studies. The present work focuses mainly on the evaluation of hardness and fracture toughness of electroless Ni–B–W coatings using a scratch tester. Coating's response toward scratching is also studied thoroughly. The characteristic short-range order present in its lattice structure causes the generation of a specific behavioral pattern. Furthermore, a linear sliding wear test is carried out on coatings' surface to analyze the wear behavior at different loading conditions. The specific wear rate is observed to be minimum at a normal load of 22.5 N against Si3N4 counterbody. The patterns of tribological behavior of the coating at different load values are examined from the worn surface morphologies. But before embarking on the scratch and sliding wear tests, the synthesized coatings are characterized under field emission scanning electron microscope and X-ray diffraction in an exhaustive manner. The growth rates with respect to time and the changes in morphological aspects of the coating are also evaluated. The present study establishes electroless Ni–B–W deposits as a suitable option for protecting mechanical components against wear.

Purpose This study aims to investigate the microstructure and the abrasive wear features of the untreated and pack borided GGG 50 quality ductile iron under various working temperatures. Design/methodology/approach GGG 50 quality as-cast ductile iron samples were pack borided in Ekabor II powder at 900°C for 3 h, followed by furnace cooling. Structural characterization was made by optical microscopy. Mechanical characterization was made by hardness and pin-on-disc wear test. Pin-on-disc test was conducted on a 240-mesh Al2O3 abrasive paper at various temperatures in between 25 and 450°C. Findings Room temperature abrasive wear resistance of the borided ductile iron increased with an increase in its surface hardness. High-temperature abrasive wear resistances of the borided ductile iron linearly decreased with an increase in test temperature. However, the untreated ductile iron exhibited relatively high resistance to abrasion at a temperature of 150°C. Originality/value This study can be a practical reference and offers insight into the effects of boriding process on the increase of room temperature wear resistance. However, above 150°C, the untreated ductile iron exhibited similar abrasive wear performance as compared to the borided ductile iron.

With an increase in the population and industrialization, a lot of valuable natural resources are depleted to prepare and manufacture products. However industrialization on the other hand has waste disposal issues, causing dust and environmental pollution. In this work, Aluminium Metal Matrix Composite is prepared by reinforcing 10 wt% and 20 wt% of wet grinder stone dust particles an industrial waste obtained during processing of quarry rocks which are available in nature. In the composite materials design wear is a very important criterion requiring consideration which ensures the materials reliability in applications where they come in contact with the environment and other surfaces. Dry sliding wear test was carried out using pin-on-disc apparatus on the prepared composites. The results reveal that increasing the reinforcement content from 10 wt% to 20 wt% increases the resistance to wear rate.

Tribological behavior of ZrO2 and Si3N4 based nanocomposites with addition of carbon nanofibres and nanotubes has been studied by the pin-on-disc technique. Friction coefficients were measured and recorded, wear rates were calculated in terms of material volume loss per load and sliding distance. The wear damage was studied using optical and electron microscopy and its mechanisms were identified. In monolithic materials the dominant wear mechanism was abrasion, in composites with CNF and with higher volume fraction of CNTs (5 and 10%) fiber pull-out and lubricating by the carbon phases occurred.

This study addresses the progressive damage of a surface/specimen/component caused by another substance in relative motion. This could cause the change in geometry, dimensions of the part which loses the practical functionality. So, an attempt was made to study the wear behavior of SAE 4340 steel using a pin-on-disc wear test machine at different loading, test speed, and time. Two cases viz. (1) single steel specimen, (2) multiple specimens were considered for the wear test and the obtained wear (μm), and frictional force (N) was compared.


Proper lubrication and surface modification are key factors to improve the tribological behavior of interacting sliding surfaces under lubricated conditions. Surface texturing of interacting surfaces has found to be an emerging technique that modifies the surfaces deterministically by producing surface features in the form of surface asperities or grooves with specific shape, size and distribution. The present paper address the impact of positive surface textures (protrusions) and number of positive textures in the sliding direction on friction and wear behavior of parallel sliding contacts. The square shaped positive surface textures are created on the specimen by ink-jet followed by chemical etching process. The sliding experiments are conducted on pin on disc friction and wear test rig by providing different sliding conditions such as plain dry, plain with lubricant and textures with lubricant between the interacting surfaces. The results indicated that the textures with lubricated condition exhibit lower friction and wear compared to other two conditions. Furthermore, it is reported that among the tested samples, the textured sample with number of textures three in sliding direction has shown a prominent effect in reducing friction and wear of parallel sliding contact.
