An analysis of multiple captures in Permoyscus with a critique on methodology

Multiple captures obtained in Sherman traps are reported for Peromyscus maniculatus (66 intraspecific, 6 interspecific) and P. difficilis (12 intraspecific, 4 interspecific) in Colorado. Multiple capture frequency in P. maniculatus. (3.53%) was higher than in P. difficilis (1.94%), which probably resulted from the greater weights of P. difficilis. Only one case of injury or death was noted in 84 multiple captures. Multiple captures occurred in traps in which the treadles were significantly less sensitive to tripping than traps that captured single mice, which suggested that pairs of mice did not enter the traps simultaneoulsy. Adult mice were disproportionatley sampled in single captures because of the insensitivity of the tripping mechanism. For the same reason, immature mice were disproportionately sampled in multiple captures. These trap-related biases can create spurious age and sex associations within multiple captures. Trap bias should be tested explicitly before attempting to analyze multiple-capture data from single-capture traps. A "socially null" model of random encounter of traps by captured pairs fits many of the data presented here and is suggested as the appropriate null hypothesis for these analyses. If live-trapping data must be used to address questions of social behavior, the use of actual multiple-capture traps, preferably to study long-term associations between individuals, is suggested.

The influence of development and sex on pain perception has long been recognized but only recently has it become clear that this is due to specific differences in underlying pain neurobiology. This chapter summarizes the evidence for mechanistic differences in male and female pain biology and for functional changes in pain pathways through infancy, adolescence, and adulthood. It describes how both developmental age and sex determine peripheral nociception, spinal and brainstem processing, brain networks, and neuroimmune pathways in pain. Finally, the chapter discusses emerging evidence for interactions between sex and development and the importance of sex in the short- and long-term effects of early life pain.

Abstract Background We have demonstrated that artificial intelligence interpretation of ECGs (AI-ECG) can estimate an individual's physiologic age and that the gap between AI-ECG and chronologic age (Age-Gap) is associated with increased mortality. We hypothesized that Age-Gap would predict long-term atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) and that Age-Gap would refine the ACC/AHA Pooled Cohort Equations' (PCE) predictive abilities. Methods Using the Rochester Epidemiology Project (REP) we evaluated a community-based cohort of consecutive patients seeking primary care between 1998–2000 and followed through March 2016. Inclusion criteria were age 40–79 and complete data to calculate PCE. We excluded those with known ASCVD, AF, HF or an event within 30 days of baseline.A neural network, trained, validated, and tested in an independent cohort of ∼ 500,000 independent patients, using 10-second digital samples of raw, 12 lead ECGs. PCE was categorized as low<5%, intermediate 5–9.9%, high 10–19.9%, and very high≥20%. The primary endpoint was ASCVD and included fatal and non-fatal myocardial infarction and ischemic stroke; the secondary endpoint also included coronary revascularization [Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI) or Coronary Artery Bypass Graft (CABG)], TIA and Cardiovascular mortality. Events were validated in duplicate. Follow-up was truncated at 10 years for PCE analysis. The association between Age-Gap with ASCVD and expanded ASCVD was assessed with cox proportional hazard models that adjusted for chronological age, sex and risk factors. Models were stratified by PCE risk categories to evaluate the effect of PCE predicted risk. Results We included 24,793 patients (54% women, 95% Caucasian) with mean follow up of 12.6±5.1 years. 2,366 (9.5%) developed ASCVD events and 3,401 (13.7%) the expanded ASCVD. Mean chronologic age was 53.6±11.6 years and the AI-ECG age was 54.5±10.9 years, R2=0.7865, p<0.0001. The mean Age-Gap was 0.87±7.38 years. After adjusting for age and sex, those considered older by ECG, compared to their chronologic age had a higher risk for ASCVD when compared to those with <−2 SD age gap (considered younger by ECG). (Figure 1A), with similar results when using the expanded definition of ASCVD (data not shown). Furthermore, Age-Gap enhanced predicted capabilities of the PCE among those with low 10-year predicted risk (<5%): Age and sex adjusted HR 4.73, 95% CI 1.42–15.74, p-value=0.01 and among those with high predicted risk (>20%) age and sex adjusted HR 6.90, 95% CI 1.98–24.08, p-value=0.0006, when comparing those older to younger by ECG respectively (Figure 1B). Conclusion The difference between physiologic AI-ECG age and chronologic age is associated with long-term ASCVD, and enhances current risk calculators (PCE) ability to identify high and low risk individuals. AbstractIn our previous study, we found that prenatal trauma exposure leads to an anxiety phenotype in mouse pups, characterized by increased corticosterone levels and increased anxiety-like behavior. In order to understand the mechanisms by which aversive in utero experience leads to these long-lasting behavioral and neuroendocrine changes, we investigated stress reactivity of prenatally traumatized (PT) mice, as well as the expression and methylation levels of several key regulatory genes of the stress axis in the dorsal hippocampus (dHPC) of the PT embryo and adult mice. We detected increased corticotropin-releasing hormone receptor 1 (Crhr1) and decreased FK506 binding protein 5 (Fkbp5) mRNA levels in the left dHPC of adult PT mice. These alterations were accompanied by a decreased methylation status of the Crhr1 promoter and an increased methylation status of the Fkbp5 promoter, respectively. Interestingly, the changes in Fkbp5 and Crhr1 mRNA levels were not detected in the embryonic dHPC of PT mice. Together, our findings provide evidence that prenatal trauma has a long-term impact on stress axis function and anxiety phenotype associated with altered Crhr1 and Fkbp5 transcripts and promoter methylation.

SynopsisIn 17 benzodiazepine (BDZ) dependent in-patients a CT scan was performed before initiation of withdrawal therapy. The evaluation of the ventricular to brain ratio (VBR) by standardized and computerized measurements revealed significantly higher mean VBRs for both high-and low-dose BDZ-dependent patients compared to the mean VBR of an age- and sex-matched control group. In addition, the mean VBR of high-dose BDZ-dependent patients (N = 8) was significantly higher than the mean VBR of low-dose BDZ-dependent patients (N = 9). This difference could not be accounted for by the age of the patients or duration of BDZ-dependency and, therefore, suggests a dose-dependent effect of BDZs on the enlargement of internal CSF-spaces. On the other hand, higher values for the width of external CSF-spaces were found to be related to increasing age of the patients and duration of BDZ-dependency.

Asymptomatic proteinuria is defined as the discovery of proteinuria on a routine examination without evidence of clinical disease. The prevalence is dependent on the age and sex of the child, as well as the circumstances under which the testing is performed. In the majority of cases, patients have transient or orthostatic proteinuria. The physician can assure the patient and parents that the prognosis is excellent. However, appropriate long-term follow-up is essential. On the other hand, persistent proteinuria represents a spectrum from a benign disorder to a disease which can progress to end-stage renal failure.

Covid-19 is not just a virus which is risking human lives everyday, but it is a phenomenon which has inflicted major changes on the long-term global survival and economic strategies. The pandemic has brought about major diversions in the world order, which philosophers and scientists have predicted to occur once in a century’s time. Covid-19 has also affected the personal health, physical and psychological of all human beings. It has forced people to change their social behaviors significantly, which has had consequential effect on their mental health. One significant result of the pandemic is the increased consumption of alcohol and other psychoactive substances among people. As people are forced to lock themselves up inside their homes, some have resorted to exercising, biking, running, and meditation to maintain sanity, while others have boosted their addictive behavior by consuming more alcohol and drugs to make staying-indoors more entertaining. Nielsen has reported a 54% rise in the national consumption of alcohol on the week of March 21st 2020, as compared to the same in 2019. The online sales of alcohol have also risen enormously from 2019 to 2020. The study aims to address the problem of increased alcoholism and substance abuse during Covid-19 by understanding the causes of this rise. The method is based on analysis and comparison of available survey reports, to find out exactly what amount of human consumption has increased during the pandemic. From the findings we can conclude that alcoholism and substance abuse has risen significantly during Covid-19, and psychological distress, anxiety and depression can be some major causes for this abnormal social behavior. It can also be implied that this increased alcoholism is likely to affect the physical health, neural and social behavior, and the work life of many human beings through the pandemic.

ABSTRACTMutations in regulators of the Mechanistic Target Of Rapamycin Complex 1 (mTORC1), such as Tsc1/2, lead to neurodevelopmental disorders associated with autism, intellectual disabilities and epilepsy. Whereas the effects of mTORC1 signaling dysfunction within diverse cell types are likely critical for the onset of the diverse neurological symptoms associated with mutations in mTORC1 regulators, they are not well understood. In particular, the effects of mTORC1 dys-regulation in specific types of inhibitory interneurons are unclear.Here, we showed that Tsc1 haploinsufficiency in parvalbumin (PV)-positive GABAergic interneurons either in cortical organotypic cultures or in vivo caused a premature increase in their perisomatic innervations, followed by a striking loss in adult mice. This effects were accompanied by alterations of AMPK-dependent autophagy in pre-adolescent but not adult mice. PV cell-restricted Tsc1 mutant mice showed deficits in social behavior. Treatment with the mTOR inhibitor Rapamycin restricted to the third postnatal week was sufficient to permanently rescue deficits in both PV cell innervation and social behavior in adult conditional haploinsufficient mice. All together, these findings identify a novel role of Tsc1-mTORC1 signaling in the regulation of the developmental time course and maintenance of cortical PV cell connectivity and provide a mechanistic basis for the targeted rescue of autism-related behaviors in disorders associated with deregulated mTORC1 signaling.

The State Game Lands 33 Research and Demonstration Area, Centre County, Pennsylvania, U.S., has been studied since 1953 with the objective of comparing the effectiveness of commonly used mechanical and herbicidal maintenance treatments on vegetation and wildlife on a right-of-way (ROW). Small mammals are important wildlife species on a ROW by consuming tree seeds, thereby reducing invasion of undesirable tree species, and these mammals are important components of a healthy ecosystem. As a follow up to a 2-year study of small mammals conducted 15 years earlier (1989 to 1990) on the State Game Lands 33 ROW, we initiated a 2-year live-trapping study in 2004 on small mammal populations on this ROW. The objectives of our study were to determine relative abundance and species richness (number of species) in six major cover types and in the adjacent forest. One hundred twenty-one individuals of eight species were observed in 2004 and 2005 combined; the most common species was the white-footed mouse (Peromyscus leucopus). One of the most important cover types to small mammals on the ROW was forb-grass, whereas the forest cover type tended to be less diverse in terms of number of mammal species than in cover types on the ROW.

There is a lack of studies regarding the long-term outcomes of Asian adults with classic congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH) due to 21-hydroxylase deficiency. We hypothesized that adults with CAH are at higher metabolic risk than their age-, and sex-matched controls. We further investigated the long-term health outcome-related factors in adults with CAH. We compared metabolic risk between adults with CAH (71 men, 93 women) and age-, and sex-matched controls (190 men, 261 women) from the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey data. The presence of obesity, testicular adrenal rest tumors (TARTs), and menstrual irregularity was assessed. Hormone status and treatment regimens were compared according to the presence of adverse outcomes. The median age was 27.0 y and 28.0 y for men and women, respectively. Adults with CAH had a higher waist circumference (88.0 vs. 82.3 cm in men, and 83.5 vs. 72.3 cm in women), and blood pressure (125.0 vs. 113.0 mmHg in men, and 120.0 vs. 104.0 mmHg in women) than age- and sex-matched controls (P<0.05 for all). The 2.7-fold increased risk for hypertension (men) and 2.0-fold increased risk for obesity (women) was significant in patients with CAH (P<0.05 for both). Obese adults with CAH showed significantly higher adrenal limb thicknesses (men) and 17-hydroxyprogesterone and dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate levels (women) (P<0.05 for both). TARTs occurred in 58.1% of men and did not differ by hormone or treatment regimen. Irregular menstruation was observed in 57.1% of women, with higher dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate levels in those with irregular periods. Adults with CAH had a higher metabolic risk than the general population. Poor disease control may increase their risk of metabolic morbidity and menstrual irregularity.
