Oil palm fruit bunch (OPFB) fibre was used as filler in polypropylene–clay nanocomposite (PNC) to study its effect on the mechanical properties of OPFB filled PNC or hybrid polymer nanocomposite (HPNC). The OPFB size was varied at 250 μm, 180 μm, 125 μm and 100 μm. HPNC was prepared by compounding 20 wt.% of OPFB together with PNC. Tensile, flexural and impact test samples were injection moulded from the compounds according to ASTM standards. The experimental results showed that the increase of OPFB size in HPNC has increased the tensile and flexural moduli from 39% to 54% and 33% to 69%, respectively. Meanwhile, the tensile and flexural strengths increased as the OPFB size increases. The elongation at break and impact resistance were not affected by OPFB size. Scanning electron microscope result showed that the fracture surfaces of coarser OPFB filled polypropylene–clay nanocomposite has several mechanisms such as fibre pull-outs, fibre fracture and fibre delamination, whereas the PNC filled with finer OPFB exhibited ductile fracture.

The deterioration of the physical–mechanical properties and loss of the chemical safety of plastics after consumption are topics of concern for food packaging applications. Incorporating nanoclays is an alternative to improve the performance of recycled plastics. However, properties and overall migration from polymer/clay nanocomposites to food require to be evaluated case-by-case. This work aimed to investigate the effect of organic modifier types of clays on the structural, thermal and mechanical properties and the overall migration of nanocomposites based on 50/50 virgin and recycled post-consumer polypropylene blend (VPP/RPP) and organoclays for food packaging applications. The clay with the most hydrophobic organic modifier caused higher thermal stability of the nanocomposites and greater intercalation of polypropylene between clay mineral layers but increased the overall migration to a fatty food simulant. This migration value was higher from the 50/50 VPP/RPP film than from VPP. Nonetheless, clays reduced the migration and even more when the clay had greater hydrophilicity because of lower interactions between the nanocomposite and the fatty simulant. Conversely, nanocomposites and VPP/RPP control films exhibited low migration values in the acid and non-acid food simulants. Regarding tensile parameters, elongation at break values of PP film significantly increased with RPP addition, but the incorporation of organoclays reduced its ductility to values closer to the VPP.

Addition or replacement of waste tyre in mortars and concretes in lightweight aggregate concrete composites are popular in concrete material research although the mechanical properties of the composite are reduced. Various research studies have been conducted in an effort to improve the mechanical properties of concretes and mortars containing waste tyre particles using chemicals and additives which lead to increase cost. This approach presents an economical and sustainable method, through adding oil palm fruit fibre (OPFF) at 0.5, 1%, and 1.5% by mass of cement content into the matrix and pre-treating the tyre crumb aggregate (0-40%) by volume with cement, in order to improve the properties of the composite. Mechanical properties including compressive strength, split tensile strength and flexural strength were measured on the mortar specimens. Results showed the addition of 0.5% OPFF in 10% treated tyre crumb mortar gives the best improvement in the mechanical strengths of mortar modified with treated tyre crumb.

In this paper the curing and mechanical properties of two series of prepared blends, i.e., chlorosulphonated polyethylene (CSM)/isobutylene-co-isoprene (IIR) rubber blends and chlorosulphonated polyethylene (CSM)/chlorinated isobutylene-co-isoprene (CIIR) rubber blends were carried out. Blends were prepared using a two roll-mill at a temperature of 40-50?C. The curing was assessed by using a Monsanto Oscillating Disc Rheometer R-100. The process of vulcanization accelerated sulfur of pure rubbers and their blends was carried out in an electrically heated laboratory hydraulic press under a pressure of about 4 MPa and 160?. The stress-strain experiments were performed using tensile tester machine (Zwick 1425). Results indicate that the scorch time, ts2 and optimum cure time, tc90 increase with increasing CSM content in both blends. The values of modulus at 100% and at 300% elongation and tensile strength increases with increasing CSM content, whereas elongation at break shows a decreasing trend. The enhancement in mechanical properties was supported by data of crosslink density in these samples obtained from swelling measurement and scanning electron microscopy studies of the rubber blends fractured surfaces.

Epoxy resin / clay nanocomposites prepared by shock wave method. The structure and mechanical properties including hardness, stress, strain and elongation at break were investigated. XRD was used to observe the interlayer spacing of the OMMT and SEM was used to survey the morphology of nanocomposites system. The results indicated that nano-montmorillonite can effectively increase the mechanical property of the material. The nano-montmorillonite was well dispersed in the epoxy matrix. The optimal process condition is that shock time 5min, nano-MMT content of 5%, duty cycle 1:3, shock depth 3cm.

Nanocomposites based on epoxidized natural rubbers (ENRs) with various levels of epoxide groups (i.e., 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50 mol%) and organoclay were prepared by melt mixing process. The organoclay employed in this study was montmorillonite clay modified by octadecylamine (OC-MMT). Cure characteristics, dynamic properties and mechanical properties of ENRs nanocomposites filled with 5 phr of OC-MMT were studied. In all cases, X-ray diffraction results indicated intercalation of ENRs into the silicate interlayer as an increase in the interlayer distance of layered silicates was observed. The maximum torque and torque difference of ENRs nanocomposites increased with increasing levels of epoxide groups in ENRs. Additionally, it was also found that the tan δ value at Tg of the ENR-50 nanocomposite was much lower than those of other types of ENRs nanocomposite. This indicates stronger interaction between ENR-50 and OC-MMT. However, ENR-50 nanocomposite showed the poorest elasticity in term of the tan δ value at the ambient temperature compared to other types of ENRs nanocomposites. A good balance between strength and elasticity was also observed in the ENR-30 nanocomposite. These results are also consistent with the observation that tensile strength and elongation at break of ENR-30 nanocomposite were higher than those of other types of ENRs nanocomposites.

The nanocomposites of polypropylene (PP)/graphene were prepared by melt blending. The effects of the dosage of graphene on the flow and mechanical properties of the nanocomposites were investigated. The morphologies of fracture surfaces were characterized through scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The graphene simultaneous enhanced tensile and impact properties of nanocomposites. A 3.22% increase in tensile strength, 39.8% increase in elongation at break, and 26.7% increase in impact strength are achieved by addition of only 1 wt.% of graphene loading. The morphological behavior indicates the fracture surface of PP/graphene is more rough than that of pure PP.

Using supercritical CO2 as the foaming agent, rigid polyvinyl chloride (R-PVC) foam sheets were prepared in a continuous extrusion foaming system. The effects of dioctyl phthalate (DOP) on the rheological properties of PVC were investigated using a Brabender torque rheometer while other basic formula remained unchanged. The influences of DOP content on microstructure, mechanical properties and density of PVC micro foamed sheet were investigated with scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results showed that the addition of DOP resulted in increased flexibility and the elongation at break of the foamed PVC sheet, while the mechanical properties of foamed PVC sheet decreased with the increase of DOP content, implying that excessive addition of DOP will cause gas escape and bubble coalescence in the foaming process. Low density PVC foam sheets with fine cell morphology were obtained when 2 phr DOP was added in PVCformula.
