This study explores the general perspectives of library and information science (LIS) professionals on knowledge management in the university libraries of Pakistan. The study specifically examines the perceptions, understandings, role and responsibilities of Pakistani LIS professionals toward knowledge management. A questionnaire was used as an instrument to evaluate the perceptions, understandings, role and responsibilities of LIS professionals toward knowledge management. The questionnaires were administered to subject librarians who were included in the sample at the universities of Rawalpindi and Islamabad. Generalising the findings of this study over the population of LIS community in Pakistan reveals that knowledge management is for the improvement of library services and productive purposes. Accordingly, the Pakistani LIS professionals use knowledge management practices for the improvement of their respective library service. The LIS community is also very familiar with the term “knowledge management”. It succeeded mainly to generalise that majority of the LIS professionals mentioned that they have used knowledge management in their libraries.

The article highlights the skills and competencies needed by library professionals in effectively participating in knowledge management practices in University libraries, based on a study conducted in the University libraries in Kerala. Knowledge and knowledge products gained prominence in the world. Developments in Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) have its positive effect on the library environment. It revolutionized the library services. Universities impart knowledge and it creates knowledgeable citizens that are able to contribute to the economic development of the nation. University Libraries support the parent institution. New tools, for accessing, processing and disseminating information have emerged and as such, library which is an integral part of the society also began adopting the technologies in rendering efficient services to its stakeholders. As a result the librarians have to acquire new roles and new methods for serving the users. KM practices demand new skills to manage resources.

The present paper focuses on the explore of social media such as Face book, Twitter, Whatsapp, etc. to work as an effective tool for imparting information or knowledge and prove helpful in making awareness among Library and Information Science (LIS) Professionals of University Libraries of University of Agricultural Sciences, Dharwad as most important aspect of social mediaas its emphasis on online collaboration and sharing because it has social networking, user centric characteristics. Data was collected by means of a questionnaire that was circulated among the LIS Professionals of University Libraries of University of Agricultural Sciences, Dharwad randomly. Present article reports the survey of social media, in making awareness among LIS Professionals. Analysis will help the LIS professionals in deriving the benefits of Social media.

Abstract Objective – University libraries in Nigeria are facing challenges arising from poor funding, increasing user demands, and a competitive information environment. Knowledge management has been accepted by information professionals as a viable management tool, but issues surrounding its application require empirical investigation. The aim of this study is to determine the organizational factors that are correlates and predictors of knowledge management practices in federal university libraries in Nigeria. Methods – The study was based on a correlational research design. Twenty heads of university libraries in Nigeria responded to a structured questionnaire developed by the researcher. The questionnaire was validated by experts and its internal reliability was 0.78 obtained through Cronbach’s alpha procedures. The data collected were analyzed using Mean, Standard Deviation, One-Way ANOVA, Pearson’s Product Moment Correlation Coefficient, and regression analysis. Results – The study found that management support and collaboration were the most significant predictors of knowledge management practices in federal university libraries in Nigeria.  Even though human resources policy and rewards systems had positive correlations with knowledge management practices, their correlation coefficients were not significant. Conclusion – The success of knowledge management in university libraries in Nigeria depends on some contextual factors such as the support given by the management staff and the extent of collaboration among staff.

Rapid changes in information and communication technology require application of managerial techniques, human resource management and integration of several technologies in library and information Centers. The present research aims at studying the extent of job enlargement in selected eight state university libraries in Kerala. Data of the study was gathered from a total of 266 qualified and permanent library and information science professionals. Analysis of data was done using SPSS and Micro Soft excel. The important finding of the research is that there is no significant level of job enlargement among library and information science professionals. It also finds that job enlargement situation of libraries in the universities in Kerala is low and different. The study reveals that there is significant variation in the level of job enlargement among the university libraries in Kerala. The highest level of job enlargement is found in Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit, Kalady followed by Kannur University.

This research aims to identify the reality of applying knowledge management practices and reveal their impact on achieving the quality of higher education in Jordan, and to identify the concept of knowledge management and the quality of higher education, and uncover knowledge management practices, and determine the components of applying knowledge management in higher education institutions. To achieve the research objectives, the researcher used the descriptive and analytical approach, relying on the questionnaire as the main tool for collecting research data. The research was applied to a sample consisting of (142) workers and those in charge of the educational process at Al-Balqa Applied University, who were chosen randomly. Among the most prominent results of this research is that there is an effect of knowledge management on higher education quality at Al-Balqa Applied University at the significance level (α= 0.05). As the results showed, one of the essential practices of knowledge innovation and creativity is that knowledge management encourages brainstorming to create new ideas and reveal tacit knowledge. One of the most important practices of applying the knowledge is that the university conducts tests on knowledge before applying it, while the essential practice of storing and distributing knowledge is that the university has many methods and means used to preserve knowledge. In light of the study results, the research recommends the need to pay attention to those in charge of the educational process and those working in it, support them and develop their capabilities, and work to implement the knowledge that it possesses through a specialized work team, and the necessity for the knowledge management to work on developing the creative vision of the employees at the university.   Received: 3 November 2020 / Accepted: 3 January 2021 / Published: 17 January 2021

The main goal of the study is to explore the shortcoming in existing knowledge management practices of some selected academic and special libraries and information centres in Bangladesh in terms of knowledge management activities, human resource management, knowledge innovation-based activities and use of ICT as a tool for knowledge management. Data were collected through review of existing literature on knowledge management, and a structured questionnaire designed for a total of 16 libraries including five public university libraries, four private university libraries, six special libraries and one information centre. This study depicts that a good number of the respondents (25%) never tried to promote knowledge exchange and sharing programmes among staff and users. Half of the total respondents (50%) were not interested in encouraging staff members in the talent competition in all categories. About 38% of the respondents never developed knowledge resources for increasing knowledge level and ability among staff and users. The essence of the study is that knowledge management practice in the libraries of Bangladesh has just been started. Finally, the study provides some suggestions for the development of knowledge management practices in the context of libraries and information centres in Bangladesh.

Purpose This study aims to explore the awareness status of Web 2.0 tools among library and information science (LIS) professionals in the University Libraries of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Design/methodology/approach The study used quantitative method to collect data from 73 LIS professionals in 18 public sector university libraries of the province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan. Inferential and descriptive statistical techniques were used to analyze data using SPSS. Findings It was observed from the findings that majority of LIS professional s possess good knowledge of MS Office; however, some senior librarians were less acquainted. Internet facility was available to 60 participants out of 66. Librarians were not familiar with many services of Web 2.0; however, Facebook, YouTube and Skype were most familiar among the librarians. Majority of the respondents had no experience of using podcasting, RSS feeds, LinkedIn, LibraryThing, Flickr and MySpace. On the other hand, e-mail services, Facebook and YouTube were founded to be the most commonly used Web 2.0 tools among respondents. Problems faced by majority of the respondents were power failure, lack of training, non-cooperation from higher authorities, low speed of internet and financial problems. Practical implications These research results can be very beneficial for the interested librarians in universities, when they plan to use Web 2.0 applications in their libraries. Originality/value This study presents an overall picture of Web 2.0 applications in university libraries of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and attempts to provide the readers with helpful information to better understand how their colleagues elsewhere are utilizing Web 2.0 tools in execution of library services.

Libraries must play a role in knowledge management created by all academicians so that it can be used by anyone. This study analyzes publications about the role of libraries in supporting knowledge management. The data were obtained from the Scopus database. The retrieval technique is by entering the keywords "Knowledge Management" and "Library" with a publication year limitation between 1992-2020. The data obtained were then grouped based on the year of publication, publication source and type of literature. For keyword mapping, this study used VosViewer. The results of the analysis showed that research publications on the role of libraries in supporting knowledge management were mostly carried out in 2013 and 2016. Library Management is the journal that publishes the most literature related to this research object, there were 11 documents with a total of 185 citations, was in the form of articles. From the VosViewer mapping, it showed that there were four clusters. Research topics that were mostly carried out were knowledge management systems, knowledge management, libraries and information science, academic libraries, knowledge sharing, knowledge management models, librarians, research development management, information science, innovation, library services, and university libraries.

Purpose Organizations ought to provide a congenial workplace for employees, particularly females, to get optimum performance. This study aims to investigate the congeniality of libraries’ human environment for female library and information science professionals (LIPs). Regarding the human environment, the manager’s support, relationship with colleagues and informal communication have been studied. Design/methodology/approach For this quantitative study, the researchers use a survey research method based on a self-constructed questionnaire. The questionnaire consisted of closed-ended questions, which were used to collect the data; however, the open-ended question entitled comments was also added to take the opinion of respondents. The sampling includes the female LIPs working in the university libraries of Punjab, Pakistan. Findings The results highlight that female LIPs were satisfied with the human environment at their workplaces. Participants not only appreciated the role and support of their immediate managers in terms of respect, feedback, task allocation and approachability but also recognized the role of colleagues and informal communication (social interaction) in making their workplace congenial and comfortable to work by establishing a positive relationship with supervisors, colleagues or subordinates at the workplace. However, some open-ended comments reveal that females face leg-pulling, favoritism, male colleagues’ indecent behavior and managers’ critical behavior at the workplace. Research limitations/implications Because of the sensitivity of the topic and limitedness of an instrument, the respondents might have been hesitant to give real opinions. This study was limited in terms of participants as data was collected only from one province of Pakistan. Practical implications Workplaces for females in a male-dominated society like Pakistan impede their commitment to giving their best. Despite an increased number of females in the profession, it is surprising that so little empirical research has been conducted on the topic. Therefore, this study is an excellent addition to the dearth of literature on the subject. The findings may help in sensitizing the management and authorities to control the human environment at workplaces as this study will also bring into light the prevailing working environment for females. Originality/value Libraries as a workplace have been studied internationally (Farler and Broady-Preston, 2012; Ocholla, 2002; Oud, 2008). From the local perspective, the only study concerning the workplace issues of libraries is by Yousaf et al. (2013), which was limited to the managerial problems faced by female librarians working at the University of the Punjab. Hence, to the best of the authors’ knowledge, this study will be one of its nature.

Introduction: Prior to 2011, libraries within Alberta Health Services (AHS) operated using a variety of self-determining service models across 19 locations.  Evaluation of library services demonstrated significant gaps in service delivery and access to resources, cost inefficiencies and variation in library service standards across the province. National and international trends reflected ongoing library closures and challenges to demonstrate library contributions to organizational goals and improvements in health information literacy. Description: In January 2011, all AHS library services were aligned under the Knowledge Management Department to capitalize on the natural fit between libraries as conduits to evidence and knowledge management practices that support the use of evidence in practice.  The mandate was to develop enterprise-wide library resources and services to support clinical decision-making and quality patient care under the umbrella of the Knowledge Resource Service (KRS). The Business Case for KRS Optimization guided this initiative.   Outcome: KRS is now a focal point for access to, and expertise in, healthcare information resources and services. Organization-wide evaluations conducted in 2011 and 2014 show increased user satisfaction, while utilization analytics reflect continued growth. Discussion: The KRS Optimization Initiative was a proactive, internally driven effort to extend library services and resources beyond the traditional library space, streamline ‘back-office’ functions and allow staff to contribute to organizational initiatives. The path has been winding yet lessons learnt include the value of dedicated staff, teamwork, and maintaining a focus on improving service for all AHS staff and clinicians.
