Although a great deal of empirical evidence has indicated that retrieval practice is an effective means of promoting learning and memory, very few studies have investigated the strategy in the context of an actual class. The primary purpose of this study was to determine if a series of very brief retrieval quizzes could significantly improve the retention of previously tested information throughout an anatomy and physiology course. A second purpose was to determine if there were any significant differences between expanding and uniform patterns of retrieval that followed a standardized initial retrieval delay. Anatomy and physiology students were assigned to either a control group or groups that were repeatedly prompted to retrieve a subset of previously tested course information via a series of quizzes that were administered on either an expanding or a uniform schedule. Each retrieval group completed a total of 10 retrieval quizzes, and the series of quizzes required (only) a total of 2 h to complete. Final retention of the exam subset material was assessed during the last week of the semester. There were no significant differences between the expanding and uniform retrieval groups, but both retained an average of 41% more of the subset material than did the control group (ANOVA, F = 129.8, P = 0.00, ηp2 = 0.36). In conclusion, retrieval practice is a highly efficient and effective strategy for enhancing the retention of anatomy and physiology material.

A modern school deals with a generation of students who were born and grown up in a digital environment and require other teaching methods. Changes in the technological and social conditions of modern society need new professional skills, which are often called “21st century skills”. These skills should be devel-oped starting from the primary school, as they are psychological and behavioural, rather than practical. Game-based learning and gamification are effective means of such skills development. The use of video games in teaching practice is studied multifaceted, along with formats and requirements of educational game, methods for effectiveness assessment, and the effect of games on students. The controver-sial nature of game-based learning effect on students require deeper research, as the increase in motivation and learning efficiency cannot be disputed, as well as the negative impact of a long gaming on cognitive abilities, emotional state and social skills of students. The study tested both an increase in the motivation and attraction of school students for the learning process, and the impact on the prac-tical results of information assimilation. There was conducted a survey on the re-sults of the application of game training to determine the motivation and attraction of students. Likewise, we counted time, spent by the study and control group, for mastering the main educational material and the post-class study of game content and the educational material it presents. A comparative test was conducted on the results of educational material comprehension to determine the effectiveness of the methodology in mastering knowledge. The group, with game-based learning and gamification applied, showed an increase in motivation and attraction to learning, students paid additional efforts for assimilating the material studied, and also showed significantly higher learning outcomes compared to the control group.

Lecturers have reverted to using a “blended” approach when teaching anatomy and physiology. Student responses as to how this contributes to their learning satisfaction were investigated using a self-administered questionnaire. The questionnaire consisted of closed- and open-ended questions that were based on three determinants of learning satisfaction: perceived course learnability, learning community support, and perceived learning effectiveness. Regarding course learnability, students responded positively on questions regarding the relevance of the subject for their future careers. However, students identified a number of distractions that prevented them from paying full attention to their studies. As far as learning community support was concerned, respondents indicated that they were more comfortable asking a peer for support if they were unsure of concepts than approaching the lecturing staff. Most of the students study in their second language, and this was identified as a stumbling block for success. There was a difference in opinion among students regarding the use of technology for teaching and learning of anatomy and physiology. From students' perceptions regarding learning effectiveness, it became clear that students' expectations of anatomy and physiology were unrealistic; they did not expect the module to be so comprehensive. Many of the students were also “grade oriented” rather than “learning oriented” as they indicated that they were more concerned about results than “owning” the content of the module. Asking students to evaluate aspects of the teaching and learning process have provided valuable information to improve future offerings of anatomy and physiology.

ObjectiveTo design, implement and assess an online learning module for third-year and fourth-year medical students addressing medication safety.DesignThis study was a prospective, parallel, open-label, randomised controlled trial with two arms: (1) a control arm in which students were given five articles to read about medication safety, and (2) an intervention arm in which students were given access to an interactive web-based learning module on medication safety. Pretesting and post-testing were done online to evaluate change in medication safety knowledge.ResultsTen students completed the study in the intervention group (online module) and six students completed the study in the control group. The increase in score obtained on the post-test, relative to the pretest, was 15.4% in the group who completed the online module and 2.0% in the control group (difference=13.4%, 95% CI 0.5% to 26.2%, p=0.04).ConclusionStudents who completed an online educational tool about medication safety demonstrated a significantly greater increase in knowledge than those who completed a few readings. Online learning modules can be a convenient and effective means of teaching safe prescribing concepts to medical trainees.

ABSTRACT Introduction Human motor dysfunction can affect the quality of life, especially waist dysfunction. And an effective means to improve muscle strength during exercise. Object This article compares and analyzes the effectiveness of human muscle exercise on the decline in quality of life caused by motor dysfunction. Method The article divides patients with motor dysfunction into trunk isokinetic training group (experimental group) and waist and abdominal muscle functional training group (control group), and comparative analysis of related indicators before and after treatment. Results Before treatment, the specific indicators of the two were different (P>0.05). After treatment, the patients’ quality of life indicators and motor function indicators were significantly different (P<0.05). Conclusion Exercise has an obvious curative effect for patients with human motor dysfunction, and it is worthy of clinical promotion. Background: Low preoperative haemoglobin is frequently observed in heart surgery patients and is associated with a significant decrease in haemoglobin between post-operative days 2 and 3, known as haemoglobin drift. Overall, these patients tend to receive many RBC transfusions. Since iron homeostasis is often impaired in these patients, restoration of iron availability might override iron-restricted erythropoiesis. However, reduced tolerance to oral iron salts has limited this strategy to intravenous iron administration. Study Design and Methods: The purpose of this study was to assess whether preoperative supplementation with oral sucrosomial iron, a new iron-delivery technology with improved tolerance and bioavailability, might be an effective strategy for this patient population. One thousand consecutive patients were randomized and received either a one-month course of sucrosomial iron (60 mg/day) or no treatment prior to elective heart surgery at a single high-volume centre (ClinicalTrials.gov NCT03560687). Primary end-points were haemoglobin concentration on the day of hospital admittance and number of blood transfusions. Secondary end-points were haemoglobin drift, tolerance of treatment and cost-effectiveness of sucrosomial iron administration. Results: Baseline haemoglobin in the treatment group was higher (by 0.67 g/dL; p<0.001) than that in the control group. The percentage of patients in the treatment group who required transfusion (35.4%) was half that in the control group (64.6%). The average number of transfused units per operation was 0.95 vs. 2.03 in the treatment and control groups, respectively. Haemoglobin drift was substantially similar in the two groups, and the tolerability of treatment was excellent (98%). The overall cost of treatment was 156 Euros less in the treatment group, expressed as a raw cost of transfusion. Conclusion: In elective heart surgery, routine preoperative sucrosomial iron administration seems to be a safe, well-tolerated and cost-effective strategy to increase preoperative haemoglobin and reduce the need for allogeneic blood transfusions.

Access graft failure is a major problem in hemodialysis. Monitoring the flow through the access so that impending failure can be detected and prevented seems reasonable, but recent clinical trials have failed to show any benefit of such monitoring. Described here are plans for a clinical trial of a new flow monitoring procedure that measures access flow weekly instead of monthly and, being performed before dialysis, avoids the dialysis-induced changes in graft flow that may have affected earlier trials. The planned trial is to be carried out in two stages, the first to establish the sensitivity and specificity of the new method, and the second (if the results of the first stage warrant it) a controlled trial comparing access-costs and hospitalization days between a monitored group and a matched standard care control group. It is hoped that this trial of the new method will establish it as an effective means of extending access-graft life.

Retrieving a subset of items from memory can cause forgetting of other related items in memory, referred to as retrieval-induced forgetting (RIF). This type of forgetting (RIF) is thought to be related to working memory and executive control processes, of which are known to be influenced by acute exercise. The objective of this study was to evaluate whether acute exercise could accentuate RIF. A two-arm, parallel-group randomized controlled intervention was employed. Participants (N = 40) were randomized into one of two groups, including an experimental group (15-min of moderate-intensity exercise) and a control group (time-matched seated task). Retrieval-induced forgetting (RIF) and retrieval practice (RP) were assessed from a category-exemplar memory task. There was no significant main effect for RIF and no group by RIF interaction, suggesting that acute exercise did not alter RIF more than the control group. There was a significant main effect for RP, but there was no group by RP interaction. These RP findings align with the RIF findings, indicating that acute exercise did not alter RP more so than the control group. In conclusion, our experimental results do not provide support for an association of acute exercise on retrieval-induced forgetting or retrieval practice.

Substance-related and addictive disorders have been strongly linked to inhibitory control impairment. However, inhibitory deficits in this class of psychiatric disorders have been tested almost exclusively with measures of inhibition of motor, overt behavior. Here, instead, we investigated inhibitory deficits in these disorders by assessing the integrity of inhibitory control over internal, covert responses. Two groups of patients with alcohol and drug addiction and a control group of healthy individuals were administered a retrieval-practice paradigm assessing inhibition of competing memories. All groups showed comparable beneficial effects of retrieval practice. In contrast, successful suppression of competing memories was achieved by the control group only. This indicates that the deficit in clinical groups can be ascribed to an impairment in inhibitory control over memory retrieval rather than to a general memory impairment. In conclusion, inhibitory deficits in addiction are more widespread than previously shown, as they encompass memory control mechanisms.
