Background. Deqi sensation is a complex but an important component for acupuncture effect. In this study, we tried to observe the relationship between Deqi and skin temperature changes and whether there was some relativity between Deqi and needle stimulations on cold congealing and dysmenorrhea rat model. Thirty-two female Sprague Dawley (SD) rats were randomly divided into four groups (Saline Control Group, Model Group, Group A with strong stimulation, and Group B with small stimulation). Group A and Group B were performed with different stimulations. We found that, compared with saline control group, model group, and Group B, Group A showed that the skin temperature changes on right acupoint SP6 and SP10 increased significantly at 5 min–10 min interval. The skin temperature changes on left SP6 decreased at instant–5 min interval. The skin temperature changes on right SP10 decreased significantly at instant–5 min interval and 10 min–20 min interval. Thermogenic action along Spleen Meridian of Foot Greater Yin was manifested as simultaneous skin temperature increase on right SP6 and SP10 at 5 min–10 min interval after needling SP6, which was helpful to illustrate the relationship between the characteristic of Deqi and needle stimulations.

Abstract Objective: to observe the effects of moxibustion on histomorphological changes of gastric mucosa, as well as on serum IL-6、IL-8、TNF-α,Hp IgG、CD3+、CD4+、CD8+ in helicobacter pylori (Hp) infected rats, so that to better understand how the moxibustion repairs the Hp- induced gastric mucosal injury. Methods: 40 SD rats were randomly assigned to four groups: group A (blank control), group B (Hp infection model), group C (moxibustion plus model), group D (electro-acupuncture plus model), 10 for each group. The “NaHCO3 plus Indometacin and Hp intragastric administration” method was employed to make gastritis model. Acupoints selected for “repair” purpose were Zu San Li (ST36), Zhong Wan (CV12), Guan Yuan (RN4), Pi Shu (BL20), Wei Shu(BL21). The histomorphological changes of gastric mucosa in rats were observed under light microscope after HE stain; IL-6, IL-8, TNF-α, Hp IgG values were evaluated by ELISA method; values of CD3+、CD4+、CD8+、CD4+/CD8+ were measured by flow cytometry method. Results: compared with group A, the values of IL-6, IL-8, TNF-α, Hp IgG and CD8+ in group B were increased(P<0.01), whereas the values of CD3+、CD4+、CD4+/CD8+ were decreased(P<0.01). Compared with group B, the values of IL-8(P<0.05),TNF-α(P<0.05), IL-6(P<0.01), Hp IgG(P<0.01) and CD8+ (P<0.05) in group C were decreased, whereas the values of CD3+(P<0.05),CD4+(P<0.05),CD4+/CD8+ (P<0.05) were increased, meanwhile such values in group D had no significant changes. Compared with group D, the values of IL-6(P<0.05),IL-8 (P<0.05)and Hp IgG (P<0.01)in group C were decreased, whereas CD4+/CD8+(P<0.05)were increased, all those changes had statistical significance. Conclusion: the preventive and therapeutic effects of moxibustion on Hp related gastritis might be realized by two ways- to inhibit the secretion of proinflammatory cytokines such as IL-6, IL-8 and TNF-α, or to regulate the production of immune factors (such as up-regulation of CD3+, CD4+ and down-regulation of CD8+).

This study investigated the antidiabetic activity of Cinnamomum cassia (C. cassia, Cc) silver nanoparticles (CcAgNPS) and effects of C. cassia on the kidneys of rats with induced type 2 diabetes. Twenty-four Sprague-Dawley rats weighing 250 ± 20 g were induced with diabetes by intraperitoneal injection of streptozotocin (STZ, 60 mg/kg). Animals were randomly assigned to one of four groups (n = 6) and treated for eight weeks with normal saline (control, group A), 5 mg/kg of CcAgNPs (group B), 10 mg/kg of CcAgNPs (group C), or 200 mg/kg of Cc (group D). Body weight and fasting blood glucose (FBG) was measured weekly and fortnightly, respectively. At the end of experiments, animals were euthanized, blood and kidney tissue samples were collected for biochemistry (oxidative stress markers and renal function parameters) and kidneys were harvested for histology (PAS and HE staining). Body weight was significantly higher in group B and C vs. control (p < 0.05), while no significant differences were observed in the kidney-to-body weight ratio between groups. FBG, glutathione, malondialdehyde, alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, serum urea and creatinine were significantly lower in group B, C and/or D vs. control (all p < 0.05). In group A, severe distortion of the glomerular network was observed, marked by the loss of capsular integrity, thickened basement membrane, tubular cells with pyknotic nuclei, vacuolization, and interstitial space with infiltrations. These adverse effects were mitigated by 5 mg/kg and 10 mg/kg of CcAgNPs. Our study confirms structural and functional damage to kidneys caused by diabetes. CcAgNPs have a regenerative potential in diabetes-induced kidney damage and may be used as an antidiabetic agent.

Abstract Objectives We investigated the relationship between cingulum injury and impaired consciousness in patients with hypoxic-ischemic brain injury (HI-BI) by using diffusion tensor tractography (DTT). Methods We recruited 29 patients with HI-BI and 25 normal control subjects. The patients were classified as intact consciousness (group A, 13 patients) or impaired consciousness (group B, 16 patients). The DTT parameters of fractional anisotropy (FA) and tract volume (TV) were estimated for both cinguli. Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) and Coma Recovery Scale-Revised (CRS-R) scores were also evaluated. Results The FA and TV values of the cinguli in groups A and B were lower than those of the control group (p < 0.05), and the FA and TV values of group B were lower than those of group A (p < 0.05). The FA and TV values of the cinguli in group A were not significantly correlated with GCS and CRS-R scores (p > 0.05); however, regarding the group B, the FA correlations with GCS (r = 0.457, p < 0.05) and CRS-R (r = 0.494, p < 0.05) and those of TV with GCS (r = 0.500, p < 0.05) and CRS-R (r = 0.491, p < 0.05) were moderately positive. Conclusions We found a significant relationship between injury of the cingulum and impaired consciousness in patients with HI-BI. Our results suggest that an injured cingulum could be an appropriate target for neurointervention or neurorehabilitation in patients with impaired consciousness following HI-BI.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the effects of L-alanyl-glutamine (L-Ala-Gln) pretreatment on oxidative stress, glycemic control and inflammatory response in children submitted to palatoplasty. METHODS: Thirty male children scheduled for routine palatoplasty, age range 2-10 years, were randomly assigned to 2 groups (n=15): Group A (saline, control) and Group B (L-Ala-Gln). Group A received normal saline 100 ml, delivered intravenously by infusion pump over 3 hours preceding surgical procedure. Group B was treated with L-Ala-Gln, 20% solution (0.5g/Kg), adding saline to complete 100ml. Peripheral venous blood samples were collected at 5 different time-points: T1- at the beginning of the study, 3 h prior to the surgical procedure; T2- at the end of the infusion (before the surgical procedure), T3- at the end of the surgical procedure, T4- 6 h postoperative and T5- 12 h postoperative. Parameters analyzed included glutathione (GSH), thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), glucose, insulin, C-reactive protein (CRP) and interleukin-6 (IL-6). RESULTS: No statistically significant differences were found between groups comparing glucose, insulin, TBARS, GSH and IL-6 levels. However, glucose levels increased (P <0.001) in T4 and T5 as compared to baseline (T1) in control group as opposed to L-Ala-Gln group. IL-6 increased in both groups during the postoperative period, indicating an increased inflammatory response. L-Ala-Gln pretreatment did not suppress the increase of IL-6, but reduced the increase of postoperative CRP levels (T5, p <0.01). CONCLUSION: Pretreatment with L-Ala-Gln in children submitted to palatoplasty attenuates the inflammatory response in early post-operative period and promoted a better glycemic control.

Abstract A new trend of regenerative medicine was introduced recently in the field of second intension wound healing. The PRP and PRF represented a corner stone in this clinical practice, were it admit many factors for acceleration of wound healing, enhancement of wound epithelization and neovascularization. PRP and PRF are considered as a great concentrated source of growth factors (PDGF, TGF-β, VEGF, bFGF) and cytokines which are fundamental fro wound healing. Nine adult dogs were used in this study; we induced a 3cm diameter full thickness cutaneous injury at the right chest region. The animals were divided into three groups equally and the wounds were treated twice weekly for three successive weeks. Group A received only normal saline (control group). The members of second group treated by PRP (group B) while, the group C treated by PRF. Clinical evaluation, Molecular studies of IL10 & TGF-β and histopathological examination were used to demonstrate the difference between the three treatment regimes. Results showed non-significant negative low correlation between loss of weight and WHR%, and showed significant high positive correlation between treatment cost either by PRP or PRF with IL10 (0.79*) and WHR%(0.996**). We concluded that the PRP and PRF exhibited higher regeneration capacity and accelerate the quality of wound healing. The PRP was more superior to PRF, but not significantly different. The IL10 was significant increase in expression in PRP, while TGF-b was non-significant increased in PRF group

This study aims at investigating the relationship between out-of-class reading activities and writing in English as a foreign language. A quasi-experimental pre-test- post-test research design without a control group was used to assess the effect of reading a novel and reading news as out-of-class reading activities on writing achievement. The research results were triangulated with open-ended questions asking participant views about their out-of-class reading tasks. 40 students of an ELT Department at a Turkish university participated in the study. The students were divided randomly into two groups and group A was asked to read a novel while group B was asked to read news as out-of-class reading tasks, for a month. The participants’ writing achievements were tested through two writing tasks, as a pre-test and post-test, in terms of content, organization, vocabulary, language use, mechanics and total scores. The pre-test and post-test scores did not display statistically significant differences between the A and B groups either in total scores or in scores of specific dimensions of the assessment. The participants in group A displayed statistically significant improvement in terms of organization, vocabulary, and language use while the participants in group B demonstrated improvement in content, organization, vocabulary, and language use. The qualitative data verified the quantitative findings, and provided views about different features of the tasks. Some suggestions for further research on the role of various factors that affect the development of writing skills, and the relationship among different language skills are provided. <p> </p><p><strong> Article visualizations:</strong></p><p><img src="/-counters-/edu_01/0727/a.php" alt="Hit counter" /></p>

To provide experimental and theoretical basis for the clinical application of Puerarin in acute alcohol poisoning, 30 Wistar rats were randomized into 3 groups as follows: (1) Group A (control) underwent normal sodium (N.S.) peritoneal injection (i.p.) and intragastric administration (i.g.); (2) Group B (alcohol) underwent an equivalent dosage of N.S. i.p. and 40% ethanol (8000 mg/kg. d).ig for 5 days; (3) Group C (Puerarin) underwent Puerarin 200 mg/kg. d. ip, and an equivalent dosage of ethanol for 5 days. The left lobes of livers were sampled, and the levels of MDA, SOD and GPX in plasma and liver homogenate were detected. The level of MDA in plasma and liver homogenate in the alcohol group was obviously higher than that in the control group (p < 0.05, respectively), while that in the Puerarin group was significantly lower than in the alcohol group (p < 0.05, respectively). The levels of SOD and GPX were opposite to that of MDA. Under a light microscope, the livers of the rats in the alcohol group showed unclear structure of hepatic lobules, stiffness of hepatic sinusoids, diffused lipid degeneration of hepatic cells, cellular swelling, and focal necrosis, while the structure remained clear in the Puerarin group. Under the electron microscope, lipid degeneration, cell organ decrease, enlargement of endoplasmic reticulum, reduced quantity of hepatins and swelling of mitochondria were observed in cells of the model group. However, the pathologistic changes were slight in the Puerarin group. In conclusion, Puerarin may have the function of inhibiting the oxidative stress induced by acute alcoholism.

The aim of the study. Assess the importance of pregravid preparation and outcomes of pregnancy and childbirth, depending on the reproductive attitudes of women in the city of Omsk. Materials and methods. The study included 92 women who were divided into groups: group A (n=43) - women whose pregnancy was planned; group B (n=49) - women whose pregnancy occurred accidentally. Each group was divided into subgroups depending on age: from 18 to 30 and from 31 to 49 years. For each patient included in the study, a specially designed map was filled out. These patients were interviewed at the City Clinical Perinatal Center. Results. Comparative analysis revealed the relationship between the reproductive settings of women of childbearing age and the peculiarity of the course of pregnancy and childbirth in these patients. Summary. The majority of women of fertile age are married: in subgroup AA - 25 (96.2%), AB - 13 (76.5%), BA - 25 (92.6%), BB - 20 (91.0%). The predominant number of women of fertile age have one or more abortions: in subgroup AA - 12 (46.2%), AB - 6 (35.3%), in subgroups of comparison BA - 8 (29.6%), BB - 6 (27.3%). More than half of the women of fertile age surveyed have a history of untreated cervical pathology (from 40.8% to 64.7%). The course of pregnancy in women planning pregnancy in most cases proceeded without complications: in subgroup AA - 13 (50.0%), AB - 11 (64.7%). The most common cause of complicated pregnancy in women whose pregnancy occurred accidentally is the threat of spontaneous miscarriage: in subgroup BA - 15 (55.6%), BB - 16 (72.7%). The uncomplicated course of labor more often [subgroup AA - 19 (73.0%), AB - 12 (70.6%)] was observed in women whose pregnancy was planned and they were motivated to give birth to a healthy child.

The quest for excellence in mental and physical health is not new. We find various references and formulations in Ayurvedic classics meant for promoting mental and physical health of a child. Suvarna Prashan is one of the formulations explained in age old Ayurvedic classic Kashyap Samhita. This formulation is very widely used now days as a memory and immune booster for children. But there is very little systematic documented study which can be used to evaluate the efficacy of the formulation. Suvarna Bhasma was prepared in Ayurved Rasayani Pharmacy, Pune. Madhu and Ghrita were collected from KLE Ayurveda Pharmacy, Belgaum. Suvarna Bindu Prashan was prepared in KLE Ayurved pharmacy, Belgaum. It contains Suvarna Bhasma, Ghrita and Madhu. Twenty apparently healthy male and female children with age group of three to four years were ready to sign inform consent form were selected into two groups each. Subjects in Group A received Suvarna Bindu Prashan where as Group B (Control group) did not receive any treatment. Both the groups were observed for six months. Children in Suvarna Bindu Prashan group showed significant reduction in the scores of eating habits, behavior, mood, temperament and scores of event of illness. However there was no significant difference in the score of sleeping habit. There was significant increase in IQ percentage.
