A novel design concept of multi-degree-of-freedom (multi-DOF) piezoelectric actuator is introduced in the paper. The main idea is to connect two identical piezoelectric transducers by hyperelastic material in order to increase the total number of degrees-of-freedom of the system. Such design principle also allows to separate vibrations of two piezoelectric transducers and to control them independently. The ring- and cylinder-type piezoelectric transducers were used to design two multi-DOF ultrasonic actuators for precise laser beam positioning. Reflecting mirror is mounted on the top of the actuator and is preloaded by magnetic force. Both disc- and cylinder-type actuators can realize up to six degrees-of-freedom, i.e., to rotate the mirror about three axes employing one transducer and to position mirror in the plane by using another transducer. Bidirectional rotation and translation motion of the mirror are obtained by switching excitation signals between different electrodes of the transducers. Both the numerical simulation and physical prototype were used to verify operating principle of the actuators. Numerical investigation of the piezoelectric actuator was performed to investigate modal-frequency and harmonic response analysis while experimental study was performed to measure electrical and mechanical output characteristics of the piezoelectric actuator. A mathematical model of contacting force control was proposed, and numerical verification was performed when the mirror need to be rotated according to the specific motion trajectory.

A novel design of a multiple degrees of freedom (multi-DOF) piezoelectric ultrasonic motor (USM) is presented in the paper. The main idea of the motor design is to combine the magnetic sphere type rotor and two oppositely placed ring-shaped piezoelectric actuators into one mechanism. Such a structure increases impact force and allows rotation of the sphere with higher torque. The main purpose of USM development was to design a motor for attitude control systems used in small satellites. A permanent magnetic sphere with a magnetic dipole is used for orientation and positioning when the sphere is rotated to the desired position and the magnetic field synchronizes with the Earth’s magnetic dipole. Also, the proposed motor can be installed and used for robotic systems, laser beam manipulation, etc. The system has a minimal number of components, small weight, and high reliability. Numerical simulation and experimental studies were used to verify the operating principles of the USM. Numerical simulation of a piezoelectric actuator was used to perform modal frequency and harmonic response analysis. Experimental studies were performed to measure both mechanical and electrical characteristics of the piezoelectric motor.

The ANSYS Workbench is used in this paper to analyse a kind of wind tunnel test model support platform with 5 degrees of freedom. The driving rod of the pitch motion is chosen as the main research project. By using static structural analysis, modal analysis and harmonic response analysis, a detailed analysis is made on the stress, deformation and frequency of the driving rod, and provides theoretical support for the future research on the stability of the institution.

A novel 4-DOF (degrees of freedom) multi-dimensional vibration isolation platform (MDVIP) based on 4-UPU (U denotes universal joint, P denotes prismatic joint) parallel mechanism is put forward for vibration isolation of the sensitive devices. It consists of 4 limbs and each limb has two universal joints and a module of spring damper. The kinematic model and vibration model of the proposed MDVIP are established and analyzed. The main dimensions of the MDVIP and the parameters of the spring damper module are designed by optimization method to meet various design requirements and constraints. Both the virtual prototype and physical prototype of the MDVIP are built to testify the vibration isolation performance. The results of numerical calculation, simulation and experimental studies based on vibration response analysis show that the proposed MDVIP can isolate at least 78% vibration from the fixed base in three axial directions and 64% vibration in the direction around the Z-axis, and thus may attenuate the disturbances to the items on the moving platform to a large extent.

At present, development of manufacturer’s ultrasonic cleaning tank (UCT) to match the requirements from consumers usually relies on computer simulation based on harmonic response analysis (HRA). However, this technique can only be used with single-frequency UCT. For dual frequency, the manufacturer used information from empirical experiment alongside trial-and-error methods to develop prototypes, resulting in the UCT that may not be fully efficient. Thus, lack of such a proper calculational method to develop the dual frequency UCT was a problem that greatly impacted the manufacturers and consumers. To resolve this problem, we proposed a new model of simulation using transient dynamics analysis (TDA) which was successfully applied to develop the prototype of dual frequency UCT, 400 W, 18 L in capacity, eight horn transducers, 28 and 40 kHz frequencies for manufacturing. The TDA can indicate the acoustic pressure at all positions inside the UCT in transient states from the start to the states ready for proper cleaning. The calculation also reveals the correlation between the positions of acoustic pressure and the placement positions of transducers and frequencies. In comparison with the HRA at 28 kHz UCT, this TDA yielded the results more accurately than the HRA simulation, comparing to the experiments. Furthermore, the TDA can also be applied to the multifrequency UCTs as well. In this article, the step-by-step development of methodology was reported. Finally, this simulation can lead to the successful design of the high-performance dual frequencies UCT for the manufacturers.

Establish the finite element model for high precision grinding machine which takes joint surface into consideration and then carrys out the static and dynamic analysis of the grinder. After the static analysis, modal analysis and harmonic response analysis, the displacement deformation, stress, natural frequency and vibration mode could be found, which also helps find the weak links out. The improvement scheme which aims to increase the stiffness and precision of the whole machine has proposed to efficiently optimize the grinder. And the first natural frequency of the optimized grinder has increased by 68.19%.

This paper presents the design and development of an efficient modular ‘Computer Simulation Model (CSM)’ for response analysis of a moored semi-submersible. The computer simulation model is designed in two split models (i.e. computational and experimental models) and each of these models consists of various modules. The modules are developed from basic governing equations related to motion and modules are integrated and we aim for a seamless integration. The moored semi-submersible is represented mathematically as six degrees of freedom dynamic system and the coupling effects between the structure and mooring lines are considered. The basic geometric configuration of semi- submersible is modelled and analyzed for stability computations in MS-Excel*TM and then the basic governing equations related to motion are modelled mathematically in a module and solved numerically with Ansys-AQWA**TM. The computational model is validated and verified with some available experimental results. The CSM is utilized to study the surge and sway responses with respect to the horizontal range of mooring lines and our results show good validation with the existing experimental results. Our presented results show that the fibre wires have minimum steady state response in surge and sway degrees of freedom as compared with the steel wires. However, they have large drift as compared with steel wires. Finally, we show that the computer simulation model can help in detailed analysis of responses and results can be utilized for design and development of new age semi-submersibles for optimum performances for a given set of parameters.

A successful prediction that whether a compressor blade is able to overcome the resonance fatigue and fatigue life of forced vibration is based on its harmonic response analysis.Hard coatings with metal or ceramic substrate are effective to change the natural characteristics and vibration amplitude of a compressor blade so that to improve the anti-vibration fatigue capability. In this paper, modal analysis and harmonic response analysis based on the finite element method are achieved to investigate the contributions of the two different hard coatings on the natural characteristics and vibration amplitude of a compressor blade. The two kinds of hard coatings are modeled by both anisotropic materials and involving their piezoelectric or piezomagnetic effects. The blade is modeled as an isotropic one. The natural frequencies and vibration amplitude of blade with different coating thickness are numerically calculated and compared. Results show that the hard coatings with different thickness play an important role in the natural characteristics and harmonic response analysis of the blade.
