This research was conducted to elucidate better understanding of the performance of crumb rubber asphalt modified with silicone-based warm mix additives. Two different silicone-based warm mix asphalt (WMA) additives (herein Tego XP and Addibit) were used to prepare crumb rubber modified (CRM) warm mix asphalt binders. The viscosity of these CRM binders was measured at different temperatures and shearing rates. Furthermore, softening point and penetration tests, Multiple Stress Creep Recovery (MSCR), Time Sweep (TS), Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM), Frequency sweep (FS), and Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) tests were also conducted on prepared samples. Based on these robust and rigorous laboratory experiments, it was established that viscosity of CRM binders was reduced by addition of Tego XP and Addibit WMA additives. However, WMA additives had different influence on rheological properties of the binder. CRM binder with Tego XP improved resistance to rutting of the binders but would degrade the fatigue performance. On the contrary, viscoelastic continuum damage (VECD) model results and those of phase angle approach revealed that the binder with Addibit improved resistance to fatigue cracking of the binders but had no adverse effects on high temperature rutting performance. FTIR test results established a presence of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) in CRM binders with Tego XP and Addibit. PDMS is a well-known hydrophobic organic and inorganic polymer that is water repellent; therefore, binders containing these silicone-based warm mix additives could be beneficial in resisting moisture damage in asphalt binders and mixtures. Morphology of CRM binders with and without WMA revealed good distribution of the rubber particles in asphalt binder matrix. Further addition of WMA increased surface roughness of the binder, which can be correlated to changes in microstructure properties of the binder. Therefore, the study concluded that addition of Tego XP and Addibit reduces viscosity and improves mechanical properties of the asphalt binder.

One of the main benefits advertised with the use of warm mix asphalt (WMA) is the decreasing aging of the asphalt binder resulting from the lower production temperature compared to conventional hot mix asphalt (HMA). Some tests were performed to determine the asphalt binder aging properties from WMA and HMA. Asphalt binders were recovered by extraction and distillation from asphalt mixtures premixed at different temperatures (140°C, 160°C, 180°C for HMA, 100°C and 120°C for WMA) in the mixing plant. Penetration@25°C, softening point (R&B) and rotational Brookfield viscosity tests were carried out. Results show that the aging of asphalt binder increases as the mixing temperature is elevated, and remarkably accelerates at the temperatures higher than 150°C. Warm mix asphalt (for example, mixing temperature at 100°Cor 120°C) can greatly reduce the aging of asphalt. Aging of the asphalt binder is one of the factors that would affect the mixture’s fatigue life. Four-point beam fatigue test samples were mixed and compacted at 140°C for HMA and 120°C for WMA, and fatigue tests with a frequency of 10 Hz and three constant strain levels (150 micro-strain, 300 micro-strain, 450 micro-strain, respectively) were performed. Results show that WMA’s fatigue life was higher than the control HMA, which indicates that it may reduce aging of asphalt binder and improve fatigue performance of asphalt mixture at lower production temperatures.

The crumb rubber modifier (CRM) particles release polymeric fractions in the matrix of the asphalt binder, which increase the asphalt binder’s fatigue and rutting resistance. The used motor oil (UMO) compensates the asphalt binder for the low-molecular-weight components lost during the aging processes. Moreover, UMO could increase the asphalt binder’s fluidity and softness. Therefore, modification of the asphalt binder by CRM in combination with UMO could enhance the asphalt binder’s performance. In this paper, the asphalt binder was modified by CRM. Then, the UMO was added to the crumb rubber modified asphalt (CRMA). The neat asphalt, CRMA, and UMO–CRMA binders’ resistance to rutting and fatigue cracking was evaluated. Temperature sweep test was used to evaluate the neat and modified asphalt binders’ resistance to rutting and fatigue cracking by measuring |G*|/sinδ and |G*|.sinδ parameters, respectively. Linear amplitude sweep (LAS) test was used to analyze the neat and modified asphalt binders’ resistance to fatigue cracking by measuring the number of load repetitions to failure (Nf ). It was found that using CRM and UMO enhanced the asphalt binder’s resistance to rutting and fatigue cracking. Therefore, UMO succeeded as a rejuvenator to balance the CRMA binder’s performance. This had occurred by creating a balance between the enhanced properties at high, intermediate, and low temperatures. Interaction temperature plays a dominant role in enhancing the asphalt binder’s performance: the enhancement in rutting and fatigue cracking parameters reached the highest values for CRMA or UMO–CRMA samples interacted at 190°C interaction temperature. At 220°C interaction temperature, these enhancements had decreased due to the devulcanization and depolymerization processes of the polymeric components released in the asphalt binder’s matrix.

The current study investigates the synergized effect of a nanomaterial and two warm mix additives asphalt (WMA) additives on different properties of asphalt binders. The study used an optimal percentage of 2% for nano-Al2O3; two WMA additives were used in different concentrations. The results revealed that the addition of WMA additives increased the softening point of nano-Al2O3 modified asphalt binder. Penetration and ductility results showed a decrease after the introduction of WMA additives. The viscosity of nano-Al2O3 modified asphalt binders showed a reduction after the introduction of WMA additives. Rutting evaluation was done by using the superpave rutting parameter and multiple stress creep and recovery (MSCR) test. The fatigue performance of the asphalt binders was measured using the superpave fatigue parameter and linear amplitude sweep (LAS) test. Results showed that the introduction of WMA additives improved the rutting and fatigue performance of nano-Al2O3 modified asphalt binders. The introduction of WMA additives enhanced the aging performance of the nano-Al2O3 modified asphalt binders.

This paper presents the results of a laboratory-based experimental investigation on the properties of asphalt binder and hot-mix asphalt (HMA) mixes modified by locally available crumb rubber, which was used as a partial replacement of asphalt by weight. In this study, fine crumb rubber with a particle size in the range of 0.3–0.6 mm, obtained from scrap tires, was added to the asphalt binder through the wet process. Crumb rubber contents of 5%, 10%, 15%, and 19% by weight of asphalt were added to the virgin binder in order to prepare the modified asphalt binder samples, while the unmodified asphalt binder was used as the control sample. The crumb rubber modified binder samples were examined for measuring viscosity indirectly using the penetration test, and temperature resistance using the softening point test. Later, both the modified and unmodified asphalt binders were used to produce HMA mixes. Two categories of HMA mix commonly used in Malaysia—namely, AC 14 (dense-graded) and SMA 14 (gap-graded)—were produced using the modified asphalt binders containing 5%, 10%, 15%, and 19% crumb rubber. Two AC 14 and SMA 14 control mixes were also produced, incorporating the unmodified asphalt binder (0% crumb rubber). All of the AC 14 and SMA 14 asphalt mixes were examined in order to determine their volumetric properties, such as bulk density, voids in total mix (VTM), voids in mineral aggregate (VMA), and voids filled with asphalt (VFA). In addition, the Marshall stability, Marshall flow, and stiffness of all of the AC 14 and SMA 14 mixes were determined. Test results indicated that the modified asphalt binders possessed higher viscosity and temperature resistance than the unmodified asphalt binder. The viscosity and temperature resistance of the asphalt binders increased with the increase in their crumb rubber content. The increased crumb rubber content also led to improvements in the volumetric properties (bulk density, VTM, VMA, and VFA) of the AC 14 and SMA 14 mixes. In addition, the performance characteristics of the AC 14 and SMA 14 mixes—such as Marshall stability, Marshall flow, and stiffness—increased with the increase in crumb rubber content. However, the AC 14 mixes performed much better than the SMA 14 mixes. The overall research findings suggest that crumb rubber can be used to produce durable and sustainable HMA mixes, with manifold environmental benefits, for use in flexible pavements carrying the heavy traffic load of highways.

In the asphalt foaming process, the foaming water content (FWC) controls the formation and characteristics of water bubbles. These water bubbles are expected to be expelled from the foamed warm mix asphalt (WMA) during mixing and compaction. However, foaming water may not be completely expelled, rather some of the microbubbles may be trapped in the foamed WMA even after compaction. These microbubbles, or undissipated water, can diffuse over time and cause damage to the foamed WMA. To this end, this study has determined the effects of foaming on the fatigue, moisture damage, and permanent deformation characteristics of foamed WMA. Foamed asphalt and mixtures were designed with varying FWCs and they were tested using linear amplitude sweep, multiple stress creep recovery, four-point flexural beam, and Hamburg wheel tracking tests. Primarily, asphalt foaming dynamics were assessed with a laser-based non-contact method. A simplified viscoelastic continuum damage concept and a three-phase permanent deformation model were used for damage evaluation. The study reveals that foaming softens the binder, which results in slightly higher rutting and moisture susceptibility, though an equivalent or slightly improved fatigue characteristic compared with the regular hot mix asphalt.

Fatigue cracking caused by repeated heavy traffic loading is a critical distress in asphalt concrete pavements and is significantly affected by the selected binder. In recent years, the growing use of recycled asphalt materials has increased the need for the production of softer asphalt binder. Various modifiers/additives are marketed to adjust the grade and/or enhance the binder performance at high and low temperatures. The modifiers are expected to alter the rheological and chemical characteristics of binders and, therefore, their performance. In this study, the damage characteristics of modified and unmodified binders, at standard long-term and extended aging conditions, were tested using the linear amplitude sweep (LAS) test. Current data-interpretation methods for LAS measurements (including AASHTO TP 101-12, T 391-20, and recent literature) showed inconsistent results for modified binders. An alternative method to interpret LAS results was developed in this study. The method considers the data until peak shear-stress is reached because complex stress states and failure patterns are observed in the specimens after that point. The proposed parameter (Δ| G*|peak τ) quantifies the reduction in complex shear modulus measured at the peak shear-stress. The parameter successfully captures the effect of aging and modification of binders.

Moisture damage is a prominent problem of asphalt pavements. The bond strength between asphalt and aggregates is a crucial factor that influences the capability of asphalt to resist moisture-induced damage. In this study, a binder bond strength (BBS) test was conducted to evaluate the effects of various modifiers and additives of different amounts on bond strength between asphalt and aggregates. Furthermore, the influence of styrene–butadiene–styrene (SBS) on adhesion behavior of asphalt binder was investigated through a gel permeation chromatography (GPC) test. Finally, the results of the BBS test were compared with the findings obtained from a Hamburg wheel-tracking device (HWTD) test, which reflected the moisture sensitivity of mixtures under wet conditions. Results indicated that gilsonite, high-density polyethylene, and polyphosphoric acid improved the bond strength of the base asphalt; SBS had no positive effects on asphalt adhesion properties; and SBS at a low amount reduced the bond strength. Ethylene bis-stearamide wax, crumb rubber, terminal blend (TB) rubber powder, and compound modifier TB rubber powder plus SBS decreased the bond strength. The GPC test results showed that SBS possibly did not actively contribute to the formation of bond strength between asphalt and aggregates. Test data for BBS and HWTD tests under wet conditions confirmed that there was no discernible correlation between these two tests when adhesion properties of modified asphalts were evaluated. However, the results of the BBS test were in accordance with those of the HWTD test when the adhesion of asphalt with different amounts of the same modifier and the mixture resistance to water damage were evaluated.

Moisture damage of asphalt mixtures is a major distress affecting the durability of asphalt pavements. The loaded wheel tracking (LWT) test is gaining popularity in determining moisture damage because of its ability to relate laboratory performance to field performance. However, the accuracy of LWT’s “pass/fail” criteria for screening mixtures is limited. The objective of this study was to evaluate the capability of the LWT test to identify moisture susceptibility of asphalt mixtures with different moisture conditioning protocols. Seven 12.5 mm asphalt mixtures with two asphalt binder types (unmodified PG 67-22 and modified PG 70-22), and three aggregate types (limestone, crushed gravel, and a semi-crushed gravel) were utilized. Asphalt binder and mixture samples were subjected to five conditioning levels, namely, a control; single freeze–thaw-; triple freeze–thaw-; MiST 3500 cycles; and MiST 7000 cycles. Frequency sweep at multiple temperatures and frequencies, and multiple stress creep recovery tests were performed to evaluate asphalt binders. LWT test was used to evaluate the asphalt mixture samples. Freeze–thaw and MiST conditioning resulted in an increase in stiffness in the asphalt binders as compared with the control. Further, freeze–thaw and MiST conditioning resulted in an increase in rut depth compared with the control asphalt mixture. The conditioning protocols evaluated were effective in exposing moisture-sensitive mixtures, which initially showed compliance with Louisiana asphalt mixture design specifications.
