Objectives. To investigate whether Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection increases the risk of colorectal adenomatous polyp (CAP) in the context of age and gender. Methods. A total of 563 study subjects (male/female, 368/195) from Beijing, China, with higher nursing level who underwent colonoscopy were retrospectively collected. H. pylori and CAP were detected by carbon-13 urea breath test and colorectal colonoscopy. The correlations between the number, size, distribution, and pathological grade of CAP and H. pylori infection were analyzed. The population was further stratified by age and gender in order to examine the risk of H. pylori and CAP in the context of these variables. The influence of H. pylori on the risk of CAP was assessed by logistic regression model. Results. 315 participants were diagnosed with CAP, and 207 participants were classified as healthy controls. The prevalence of H. pylori in the CAP group was significantly higher than that in the healthy control group (119/315, 37.8% versus 44/207, 21.3%) (p<0.001). The proportion of H. pylori positive plus CAP in participants <50 years old was significantly higher than that in participants >50 years old (87/250; 34.8% versus 32/65; 49.2%) (p=0.033). Furthermore, H. pylori infection was identified as one of the major risk factors of CAP (OR=2.679; 95% CI: 1.717-4.179, p<0.001), independent of age, sex, and body mass index and was correlated with size, distribution, and pathological grading of CAP (p<0.001). Conclusions. H. pylori is a major risk factor for CAP. Further studies are needed to assess the effects of H. pylori treatment or persistent infection on the occurrence or recurrence of CAP.

AbstractObjectiveThis study aimed to examine nasal mucociliary clearance time in patients with Helicobacter pylori infection.MethodsFifty patients who were newly diagnosed with H pylori infection using gastric biopsy in the gastroenterology out-patient clinic, and 50 age- and gender-matched healthy adults who were admitted to the otorhinolaryngology out-patient clinic, were included in this study. After an otorhinolaryngological examination (anterior rhinoscopy and nasal endoscopic examination), the nasal mucociliary clearance time of each subject was calculated using the saccharine test.ResultsThe mean mucociliary clearance time was 06:29 ± 3:31 minutes (range, 00:55–15:19 minutes) in the control group and 10:12 ± 06:09 minutes (range, 01:28–32:00 minutes) in the study group. Comparisons of the two groups revealed a statistically significant difference (p = 0.002).ConclusionNasal mucociliary clearance time was significantly increased in patients with H pylori infection. The results suggest that H pylori infection may have an unfavourable effect on nasal mucociliary clearance.

Background: Today, many hypotheses have been proposed in the pathogenesis of migraine. The inflammatory hypothesis is one of them. The immature granulocyte count (IGC) is also an inflammatory parameter which importance has been understood recently. There are no studies evaluating IGC in migraine. The aim of the study to investigate the levels of IGC and other hematological inflammatory parameters in migraine. Material and Method: Materials and Methods: Forty-eight patients diagnosed with migraine who applied to Kastamonu Training and Research Hospital Neurology outpatient clinic between 07.01.2020 and 10.01.2021 were included in the study. 42 people with similar age and gender distribution were included for the control group. Data on laboratory tests, age and gender of patients were obtained from the hospital Laboratory Information System (LIS). CBC parameters of the patients at the first admission and before any treatment, calculated with an automated hematological analyzer (XN-1000-Hematology-analyzer-Sysmex Corporation, Japan) were analyzed. Using Complete Blood Count (CBC) data, neutrophil count (NEUT#), neutrophil percentage (NEUT%), lymphocyte percentage (LYMPH%), and IGC were recorded. Neutrophil lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet lymphocyte ratio (PLR), and systemic immune inflammation index (SII) values were calculated with the formula. Results: In our study, NLR and IGC was significantly higher than the healthy control group (p=0.002, p=0.025). PLR was also found to be high, but it was not statistically significant (p=0.063). Conclusion: The significantly higher NLR and IGC levels in migraine patients compared to the healthy controls support the role of inflammation in etiopathogenesis.

Introduction: The association between diabetes and Helicobacter Pylori (H. Pylori) infection remains controversial in the literature. The aim of our study was to search an association between diabetes and H. Pylori infection. Methods: This is a case-control study carried out in 2017 over 3 months (September-October-November), collecting 120 patients with dyspepsia, matched for age and gender into two groups: a group of 77 patients with diabetes, and a group of control cases made of 43 non-diabetics. Diabetes was defined according to the American Diabetes Association (ADA) of 2017. Clinical, biological, endoscopic and anatomopathological data were collected from medical records. Results: The average age of the patients was 50±2,1 year. The sex ratio was 0.51. 34.2% (n=41) patients were male. Diabetes was type 2 in the majority of cases (88.31%) and type 1 in 11.68% only. H. Pylori infection was more prevalent in diabetics (19.48%, 11.63%, p=0.27). H. Pylori infection was more prevalent in type 1 diabetics (44.44%, 16.18%, p= 0.04). The frequency of upper endoscopic lesions in diabetics and controls was 70.13% and 74.42%, respectively. Chronic gastritis, gastric atrophy, and intestinal metaplasia were found in 61%, 3.9% and 2.6% of the cases in the group of diabetics and 62.79%, 6.98% and 4.65% respectively in the control group (p= not significant (NS)). Conclusion: Our study shows the absence of a significant association between diabetes and H. Pylori infection, as well as the absence of endoscopic and histological specificities of this infection in patients with diabetes.

The pathogenic bacterium Helicobacter pylori is a causative agent of gastric diseases in Bangladesh as well as throughout the world. This study aimed at analyzing the prevalence of H. pylori infection among dyspeptic patients in Chittagong, the second most populous city of Bangladesh, using 16S rRNA-based H. pylori-specific Polymerase Chain Reaction and Campylobacter-like organism test. We found that 67% of the population under study was positive for H. pylori infection. Gastric ulcer and duodenal ulcer disease showed statistically significant association with H. pylori infection; however, no association of H. pylori infection was observed in terms of age and gender. This study would play a crucial role in managing H. pylori-induced gastric diseases by understanding the current trend of H. pylori infection in the Chittagong region of Bangladesh.

Background and Aim: Lymphoid cell infiltration and destruction of exocrine glands, specifically lacrimal and salivary glands are characteristics of Sjogren’s syndrome (SS). An etiological role has been proposed for Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori), interacting in the clinical course and complications of SS (including gastric cancer and lymphoma). The aim of this study was to identify the probable correlation between H. pylori infection and Sjogren’s syndrome (SS). Methods: In this case-control study, ELISA method was used to determine serum level of IgA and IgM anti H. pylori antibody in 43 subjects with SS according to the international criteria and 95 healthy subjects as control. SPSS-17 was used to analyze data with t-test. P value <.05 were considered significant. Results: Serum level of IgM (34.9% vs. 10.5%, p-value= 0.001) and IgA (67.4% vs. 46.3% p value= 0.021) anti H. pylori antibody were significantly higher in SS patients compared to the control group. There was a positive correlation between age and H. pylori infection (r=0.2, Pvalue= 0.05). Conclusion: Patients with SS had a higher prevalence of H. pylori infection compared to the normal population. Eradication of H. pylori is recommended particularly in older patients with SS.

Keystroke dynamics are used to authenticate users, to reveal some of their inherent or acquired characteristics and to assess their mental and physical states. The most common features utilized are the time intervals that the keys remain pressed and the time intervals that are required to use two consecutive keys. This paper examines which of these features are the most important and how utilization of these features can lead to better classification results. To achieve this, an existing dataset consisting of 387 logfiles is used, five classifiers are exploited and users are classified by gender and age. The results, while demonstrating the application of these two characteristics jointly on classifiers with high accuracy, answer the question of which keystroke dynamics features are more appropriate for classification with common classifiers.

Abstract Objectives Although bowel symptoms are often predominant, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) patients can have several oral manifestations. The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of dental caries and periodontal disease in patients with Crohn’s disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC) compared to an age and gender-matched control group of patients without IBD. Material and methods The DMFT (Decayed, Missing, Filled Teeth) scores and the DPSI (Dutch Periodontal Screening Index) of 229 IBD patients were retrieved from the electronic health record patient database axiUm at the Academic Centre for Dentistry Amsterdam (ACTA) and were compared to the DMFT scores and DPSI from age and gender-matched non-IBD patients from the same database. Results The total DMFT index was significantly higher in the IBD group compared to the control group. When CD and UC were analyzed separately, a statistically significant increased DMFT index was observed in CD patients but not in UC patients. The DPSI did not differ significantly between the IBD and non-IBD groups for each of the sextants. However, in every sextant, IBD patients were more frequently edentulous compared to the control patients. Conclusion CD patients have significantly more dental health problems compared to a control group. Periodontal disease did not differ significantly between IBD and non-IBD groups as determined by the DPSI. Clinical relevance It is important that IBD patients and physicians are instructed about the correlation between their disease and oral health problems. Strict oral hygiene and preventive dental care such as more frequent checkups should be emphasized by dental clinicians.

AbstractIt is unknown how self-relevance is dependent on emotional salience. Emotional salience encompasses an individual's degree of attraction or aversion to emotionally-valenced information. The current study investigated the interconnection between self and salience through the evaluation of emotional valence and self-relevance. 56 native Dutch participants completed a questionnaire assessing valence, intensity, and self-relevance of 552 Dutch nouns and verbs. One-way repeated-measures ANCOVA investigated the relationship between valence and self, age and gender. Repeated-measures ANCOVA also tested the relationship between valence and self with intensity ratings and effects of gender and age. Results showed a significant main effect of valence for self-relevant words. Intensity analyses showed a main effect of valence but not of self-relevance. There were no significant effects of gender and age. The most important finding presents that self-relevance is dependent on valence. These findings concerning the relationship between self and salience opens avenues to study an individual's self-definition.

Objective(s). The purpose of this study was to explore the effectiveness of wideband acoustic immittance (WAI) in the diagnosis of otosclerosis by comparing the differences in the energy reflectance (ER) of WAI between patients with otosclerosis and age- and gender-matched normal hearing controls in the Chinese population. Methods. Twenty surgically confirmed otosclerotic ears were included in the otosclerotic group. The ER of WAI at ambient and peak pressures, resonance frequency, and 226-Hz tympanogram were collected prior to surgery using a Titan hearing test platform (Interacoustics A/S, Middelfart, Denmark). All diagnoses of otosclerosis in the tested ear were confirmed by surgery after the measurements. Thirteen normal adults (26 ears) who were age- and gender-matched with the otosclerotic patients were included as the control group. Results. At peak pressure, the ERs of otosclerotic patients were higher than those of the control group for frequencies less than 4,000Hz and were lower for frequencies greater than 4,000Hz. In addition, within the analyzed frequencies, the differences observed at 2,520Hz was statistically significant (p<0.05/16=0.003, Bonferroni corrected). At ambient pressure, the differences observed at 1,260 and 6,350Hz were statistically significant (p<0.05/16=0.003, Bonferroni corrected). Although the differences between the otosclerotic and control groups exhibited similar trends to those in studies implemented in Caucasian populations, the norms in the present study in the control group were different from those in the Caucasian populations, suggesting racial differences in WAI test results. Regarding the middle ear resonance frequency, no significant difference was observed between the two groups (P>0.05). Conclusion. WAI can provide valuable information for the diagnosis of otosclerosis in the Chinese population. Norms and diagnostic criteria corresponding to the patient’s racial group are necessary to improve the efficiency of WAI in the diagnosis of otosclerosis.

AbstractIn thiswork, a real-time system able to automatically recognize soft-biometric traits is introduced and used to improve the capability of a humanoid robot to interact with humans. In particular the proposed system is able to estimate gender and age of humans in images acquired from the embedded camera of the robot. This knowledge allows the robot to properly react with customized behaviors related to the gender/age of the interacting individuals. The system is able to handle multiple persons in the same acquired image, recognizing the age and gender of each person in the robot’s field of view. These features make the robot particularly suitable to be used in socially assistive applications.
