Although the main framework for occupational therapy includes delivery of services in educational institutions with students with disabilities, little is known about how the occupational therapists perceive their role in this specific system. This research examines an integrated conceptual model wherein self-efficacy explains the occupational therapists’ role perception with employability skills as a mediator. Participants, 147 occupational therapists working in educational systems, completed an online demographic questionnaire, the Perception Questionnaire for Occupational Therapists in the Education System, General Self-Efficacy Questionnaire, and Employability Key Questionnaire. The proposed model was analyzed by the structural equation model (SEM) using AMOS software. The SEM provided excellent goodness of fit indices, χ 2 24 = 40.49 ; p = .019 ; NFI = .93 ; CFI = .97 ; RMSEA = .07 ; SRMR = .05 , and explained 40% of the variance in role perception. These findings highlight employability skills as the primary contributor that affects occupational therapists’ role perception. Self-efficacy and employment skills influence how occupational therapists working in education systems perceive their roles; thus, employment skills should be included in professional training and development courses. This study has implications for occupational therapists working on the education system to understand the meaningful effects of employability skills as critical to developing and improving their role perception.

Background. Occupational therapists, especially those in education systems, are challenged to define their professional roles and identities. Purpose. This research evaluated the Role-Perception Questionnaire for Occupational Therapists in the Education System’s (RP-OT) psychometric properties, the Professional Identity Scale (PIS) internal consistency among occupational therapists, and relationships among role perception, professional identity, and demographic characteristics. Method. A sample of 147 occupational therapists in education systems completed the RP-OT and PIS. We conducted exploratory factor analysis and calculated Cronbach alpha to evaluate the RP-OT and PIS psychometric properties. Relationships were examined using Pearson correlation. Findings. The RP-OT was found reliable and valid, with medium-to-strong correlations among role perception, professional identity, and demographics. Teamwork in the education system was the major predictor (82%) of professional identity. Implications. Teamwork is part of the professional role of occupational therapists in the education system and a significant component for developing their positive professional-identity perception.

Abstract Background: Whereas the majority of efforts targeting adolescents’ dietary behaviour have predominantly focused on improving their access to nutrition information, findings indicate that this approach has had little if any effect on their short-term dietary behaviour. Among the reasons for this is that adolescents report finding it difficult to understand the nutrition information that they access, and are thus unable to use the information as intended. Exploring critical nutrition literacy (CNL) might provide insight into how adolescents evaluate and apply the nutrition information that they get from different sources. Methods: The present study employed a cross-sectional study design, in which we sampled 1620 tenth graders, aged 15 and 16 years, enrolled at 58 secondary schools in Norway. Data collection: Using an electronic survey system, the participants responded to scales measuring ‘self-efficacy in Body and Health’ (SEBH), ‘evaluation of nutrition information’ (CNLEval and ‘engagement in dietary behaviour’ (CNLEng). Study hypotheses: We hypothesized that SEBH influences adolescents’ CNLEval and CNLEng, and that CNLEval influences CNLEng directly and mediates the effect of SEBH on CNLEng. Statistical analyses: Using Lisrel 9.30, the present study formulated and evaluated a hypothesized structural equation model (SEM) linking the two subdomains of CNL (CNLEval, CNLEng) and SEBH.Results: The study yielded a simple yet theoretically sound model linking CNL and SEBH; the adequate fit to the goodness-of-fit indices showed that the proposed model adequately described the data. Conclusions: The present study strengthened the hypothesis that there exists a strong association between CNL and SEBH, and between the two aspects of CNL-CNLEval and CNLEng. Hence, efforts aimed at promoting positive dietary behaviour in adolescents and enhancing their nutrition literacy efforts might benefit from enhancing their perceived self-efficacy in nutrition related subjects.

In the occupational therapy literature reviewed, limited empirical research has tested the links between the occupation of leisure and health. This study examines the influences of leisure participation on mental health outcomes in adolescents and investigates the mediating constructs of self-efficacy, competence, and global self-worth as hypothesized in an a priori model developed from earlier research. With the use of a population-based approach, this study surveyed 850 adolescents aged 12 to 18 years, using a standardized self-report battery. Structural equation modeling was employed to investigate relationships and test the goodness-of-fit of the hypothesized model. Results demonstrate that leisure participation has a significant and positive relationship with mental health, and positively influences self-efficacy, competence, and global self-worth. However, results also show that only selected forms of leisure are positive influences on adolescent mental health development. These findings provide evidence to support a theoretical basis for the relationship between the occupation of leisure and health, and are discussed in relation to occupational therapy ideology.

The purpose in this study was to confirm the relationship between teacher self-efficacy and teaching practices in the health and physical education (HPE) curriculum in Taiwan. We used stratified random sampling and cluster sampling methods to select 842 HPE teachers from elementary schools in Taiwan. They completed the Teacher Self-Efficacy Scale in HPE and the Teaching Practice Scale in HPE (Pan, 2006, 2007). Structural equation modeling was used to analyze the suitability of the hypothetical model. Results indicated that the model had acceptable goodness-of-fit and it was concluded that teachers' self-efficacy has a positive effect on teaching practices in HPE.

Purpose This study was carried out in 2013 and aims to define the professional self-efficacy of preschool teachers (PTSE); define preschool teachers' perception of preschool excellence (PTPPE); and investigate the relationship between the two. Design/methodology/approach Scales for PTPSE and PTPPE were developed especially for this study. Preschool teachers (N = 202) participated during the 2013 school year. Structural equation modelling was performed to test the fit between the research model and the obtained data. Findings PTPSE scale (a = 0.91) comprised three subscales: pedagogy (a = 0.84), organisation (a = 0.85) and staff (a = 0.72). The PTPPE scale (a = 0.92) is also composed of three subscales: organisation and pedagogy (a = 0.88), staff (a = 0.84) and parents (a = 0.83). The goodness of fit measures were RMSEA = 0.045, CFI = 0.97, NFI = 0.89, df = 173, χ² = 242.94, p = 0.000, showing GFI = 1.4 (<3) as a good fit. Research limitations/implications As the sample was relatively small, the results need to be replicated with larger samples. Therefore, the conclusions of this study are only partially applicable. Another limitation is that both the PTPSES and PTPPE were tested only in Israel and not in other environments. Practical implications Understanding self-efficacy of preschool teachers, preschool excellence and the relations between them could assist policymakers with decisions concerning continuing professional development (in service training) of preschool teachers. Originality/value Little is known about perceived self-efficacy of preschool teachers, their perception of preschool excellence or the relations between the two.

With ever-increasing educated yet unemployed populations across borders has alarmed the entire education system globally. The present state of lack of employability skills across higher education systems in countries worldwide can very well be attributed as the reason for this. The education systems, governments, schools, colleges, and universities are introspecting what could bring it to inculcate the employability skills in the graduates expecting to get employment. These are the institutional enablers for working on building the infrastructure to developing employability skills in their jurisdictions but one such primary though the informal institution is the family. In the family, the parents have equal parts to play for this at the same time. This article reviews the role of parents in the development of employability skills in their children.

Motivation to learn a school subject is crucial for achieving knowledge and skills and, consequently, for good academic performance in the subject. There are several approved questionnaires dedicated to assessing motivation for science and biology but none for upper secondary school Czech students. Therefore, existing Science Motivation Questionnaire was evaluated, validated and modified in order to create a Czech version of a Biology motivation questionnaire (BMQ). The original version of the questionnaire had 30 questions, arranged in the following subscales: Internal Motivation, External Motivation, Personal Relevance, Responsibility, Self-efficacy and Anxiety. Validation was based on a survey of 517 upper secondary school Czech students. Analysis of the questionnaires revealed that, although the questionnaire could be used as a whole with satisfactory Cronbach alpha values, the underlying constructs in the Czech version were different from the six ones originally suggested. Based on Exploratory Factor Analysis and Structural Equation Modelling, 14 questions retained in three constructs: a) Self–efficacy, b) Responsibility and c) Motivation as a combination of Internal Motivation, External Motivation and Personal Relevance. This shorter version of the BMQ showed satisfactory Goodness of Fit Indices in contrast to the original 30-item version. Keywords: biology motivation questionnaire, questionnaire modification, EFA, secondary school students.
