Objective. To detect the single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) of alpha-(1,2) fucosyltransferase 2 gene (FUT2) and the secretion status in the newborns of Chongqing China and explore the relationship between genotype or phenotype of FUT2 and neonatal necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC). Methods. Newborns who were hospitalized in Children’s Hospital of Chongqing Medical University from August 2014 to December 2015 and in line with the inclusion criteria were chosen as the research subjects; 34 cases of them in accordance with the diagnostic criteria of NEC stage II or III were NEC group, and 36 other cases of them were the control group. Total DNA was extracted from oral epithelial cells of patients which were collected with cotton buds. FUT2 SNP genotype was detected by gene sequencing. H antigen was detected with saliva samples by saliva agglutination inhibition test. Related clinical data were collected for analysis. Results. There are three genotypes on the rs1047781 (A385T) allele of the FUT2 encoding sequence: AA, AT, and TT. The number of genotypes AA, AT, and TT in the NEC group was 9 (26.47%), 12 (35.29%), and 13 (38.24%), respectively. In the control group, the number of genotypes AA, AT, and TT was 12 (33.33%), 17 (47.23%), and 7 (19.44%). There were no differences in genotypes between the two groups according to the chi-square test ( P > 0.05 ). There were 22 cases of secretors (64.7%) and 12 cases of nonsecretors (35.3%) in the NEC group. The number of secretors and nonsecretors in the control group was 31 (88.89%) and 5 (11.11%). Statistical difference was found in the phenotype between two groups through the chi-square test ( P < 0.05 ). In addition, no G428A homozygous mutation, which causes nonsecretor phenotype in Caucasians, was seen in all the subjects of this study. Conclusions. These findings indicate that secretion status (nonsecretor) was significantly associated with NEC in Chongqing, China.

Stunting is a condition that describes the growth of children due to long-term malnutrition. Stunting according to WHO is based on the index of the body length compared to age (PB/U) or height compared to the age (TB/U) with the Z-score limit of less than-2 SD. The age of toddlers is an age where child growth and development happens very quickly. In that age toddlers often experience health problems especially nutritional problems. Insufficient nutritional intake can cause stunting and can inhibit children's development. Design of observational analytic research with case-control design in toddlers aged 2-3 years. The population of this research is all toddlers who reside in the working area of Puskesmas Layeni subdistrict of Central Maluku district. Sample research is done using the Lameshow formula. The study used the ratio of 1:1 so that the number of research subjects in the case group was equivalent to the number of research subjects in the control group (i.e. 30 children per group), resulting in a total subject of 60 children. Analysis of the data used to see the difference between variables using the chi-square test. Variable dependent events are stunting and independent dietary variables. The results of the chi-square test show that there is no difference between the diet (the level of energy and protein adequacy) in a stunting toddler and not stunting the value (p > 0.05). The conclusion of the diet (adequacy of energy and protein) respectively in the group of cases is not too much of a significant difference. But in the control group more toddlers with good energy and protein adequacy levels. Keywords: toddler, diet, stunting

Background: To investigate the expressions of fibrinogen (Fib) and Interleukin-12 (IL-12) in serum of neonatal necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC), and to analyze the correlation between the two and their relationship with clinicopathological features. Methods: Forty two children with NEC treated in Xuzhou Children’s Hospital, Xuzhou Medical University Xuzhou, China from 2016-2019 were selected as an observation group and 40 children who underwent physical examination at the same period as a control group. The expression levels of Fib and IL-12 in the serum of two groups were detected by ELISA. The correlation between Fib and IL-12 in the observation group and the correlation among the expressions of Fib, IL-12, the clinicopathological features and common examination indexes of the children with NEC were investigated by Pearson correlation analysis. Results: The levels of Fib and IL-12 in the serum of the children in observation group were significantly higher than those in the control group were (P<0.05). There was a significant positive correlation between the levels of Fib and IL-12 in the serum of the children in observation group (P<0.05). The expression levels of Fib, IL12 were not significantly correlated with sex and age of NEC children, but correlated with vomiting, diarrhea, bloody stool and bradycardia in NEC children (P<0.05). Fib and IL-12 were positively correlated with erythrocyte level (P<0.05) and negatively correlated with platelet level. Conclusion: The expressions of Fib and IL-12 in the serum of NEC children can objectively predict the severity of NEC.

The discovery of repeated TB cases is a problem in TB control in Muara Enim Regency. One of the causes of failure and lack of discipline of TB patients in taking medication is influenced by the role of the drug taking supervisor (PMO). The role of PMO is very important in monitoring, reminding and ensuring regularity of treatment for TB patients in order to achieve optimal treatment results. This study aims to examine the relationship between the role of the family as a supervisor for taking medication on the incidence of recurrent tuberculosis in Muara Enim district. This study used a case-control design with a retrospective approach. The research subjects were PMO in patients with recurrent TB/MDR TB as a case group and PMO in former TB patients who recovered on schedule as a control group. The comparison of case samples (46 samples) and controls (92 samples) was one to two (1:2). Data on the level of knowledge, attitude and behavior variables were assessed using a scoring system. The analysis uses the chi square test to get the odds ratio (OR) value. The results of the analysis show that the level of PMO knowledge is still below the program's expectations. The level of knowledge, attitudes and behavior of PMO are not related to the occurrence of recurrent TB cases. To increase the role of PMO, health workers can conduct counseling by changing the extension technique using more varied and communicative extension media.

Abstract α-tocopherol is known to be a powerful antioxidant, in this regard, it was added to bovine oocyte in vitro maturation media to evaluate its effect on oocyte maturation. Oocytes (n = 624) aspirated from ovaries of slaughtered cows were classified by quality and divided in four categories according to cytoplasm appearance and cumulus cells layers. Oocytes were washed in TCM-199 supplemented with fetal bovine serum (FBS) and FSH, then distributed in maturation media (TCM-199 supplemented with FBS, FSH and gentamicin). Three experimental groups of α-tocopherol (50, 100 and 200 mM) and a control group without α-tocopherol were used. Maturation was carried 22 h at 38.5°C in a 5% CO2 atmosphere. Oocytes were examined to determine cumulus expansion as categorical data (expansion or no expansion), as well as cumulus expansion Index (CEI). For CEI determination oocytes were graded 0 to 4, being 0 those with null expansion and 4 those with a noticeable cell expansion, then the number of oocytes were multiplied by the grade given and a sum of the totals was obtained, the new total was divided by the total of oocytes in the group and the result obtained corresponded to the CEI of the group. Results were analyzed with Chi Square test (for maturation rates) and an ANOVA (for the CEI) using the SAS system, data are presented as mean ± standard error. There was no statistical difference between control and α-tocopherol groups (P >0.05). Numerically, the control group showed a higher maturation rate (100%) and obtained a higher CEI (2.44±0.20), followed by the 50 mM group (98.16%; 2.39±0.13), the groups 200 mM (97.40%; 2.00±0.14) and 100 mM (96.25%; 2.06±0.24) were the lowest. The addition of the minimum concentration (50 mM) of α-tocopherol to the maturation media could improve maturation rates without exposing oocytes to toxic effects.

Clinicians should appreciate the effectiveness of virtual reality (VR) headsets for managing both the anxiety and the behaviour of non-cooperative paediatric patients who require treatment over several dental appointments. The aim of this study was to assess the effectiveness of using a VR headset as a distraction for managing the anxiety and behaviour of paediatric patients during their dental treatment. Eighty patients, aged between five and ten years old and who required dental treatment over three or more appointments, were randomly allocated into two groups. One group used a VR headset during all their appointments, and the other one did not use any distraction technique. The patients were asked to take a Facial Image Scale Test during their first and last appointments to assess their level of anxiety. Additionally, the dentist completed the Frankl Test to quantify the child’s behaviour at the beginning and the end of their treatment. The results obtained, both from the group using the VR headset and from the control group, were compared using the chi-square test. The use of a VR headset during dental treatment significantly reduced anxiety (95% of the children were happy) and improved behaviour (100% positive behaviour) as compared with the control group (40% and 57.5%, respectively). A VR headset can effectively distract a paediatric patient, helping to reduce anxiety and manage behaviour during dental treatment

Abstract Objective: To test the null hypothesis that there is no difference in facial profile shape, malocclusion class, or palatal morphology in Malay adults with and without obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Materials and Methods: Subjects were 120 adult Malays aged 18 to 65 years (mean ± standard deviation [SD], 33.2 ± 13.31) divided into two groups of 60. Both groups underwent clinical examination and limited channel polysomnography (PSG). The mean OSA and control values were subjected to t-test and the chi square test. Results: Physical examination showed that 61.7% of the OSA patients were obese, and 41.7% of those obese patients had severe OSA. The mean body mass index (BMI) was significantly greater for the OSA group (33.2 kg/m2 ± 6.5) than for the control group (22.7 kg/m2 ± 3.5; P < .001). The mean neck size and systolic blood pressure were greater for the OSA group (43.6 cm ± 6.02; 129.1 mm Hg ± 17.55) than for the control group (35.6 cm ± 3.52; 114.1 mm Hg ± 13.67; P < .001). Clinical examination showed that the most frequent findings among OSA groups when compared with the control group were convex profiles (71.7%), Class II malocclusion (51.7%), and V palatal shape (53.3%), respectively; the chi square test revealed a significant difference in terms of facial profile and malocclusion class (P < .05), but no significant difference in palatal shape was found. Conclusion: The null hypothesis is rejected. A convex facial profile and Class II malocclusion were significantly more common in the OSA group. The V palatal shape was a frequent finding in the OSA group.

This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of adding sucrose in vitrification solution of ovine embryos produced in vivo. Forty Dorper ewes were selected and superovulated. Immediately prior to the embryo collection by laparotomy, a laparoscopy was performed to verify the superovulatory response. The recovered flushing was followed by embryo evaluation and embryos were divided in two experimental groups where embryos from Control group were submitted to a traditional vitrification protocol and embryos from Sucrose group to a modified vitrification protocol with sucrose. After warming, embryos were again divided regarding cryoprotectant removal (Indirect) or not (Direct). The embryo quality was classified as embryos of degrees I (excellent or good), II (regular), III (poor) and IV (dead or degenerate). It was also verified the homogeneity of mass, occurrence of embryonic mass retraction and rupture of pellucid zone. The results were expressed as percentages and were subjected to Chi-square test with P < 0.05. The embryos vitrified in the presence of sucrose had lower proportions of lower-quality embryos after warming (22.20 vs. 44.50%), higher percentages of homogeneous embryos after warming (63.89 vs. 38.89 %) while concerning other parameters there was no difference between these groups. It can be concluded that the addition of 0.4 M sucrose during vitrification improves the embryo quality.

Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of placing a resorbable collagen barrier in impeding the extrusion of obturation material in primary molars undergoing resorption. Study design: All the 94 canals in 47 mandibular molars were allocated to 2 groups- Group ‘A’- 47 canals with collagen barrier (Test group) and Group ‘B’- 47 canals without collagen barrier (Control group) based on randomization protocol. Pulpectomy was performed and obturation of both test and control canals were radiographically assessed. Pearson’s chi – square test was applied to analyze the results. The significance level was predetermined at p < 0.05. Results: Among the test group, 93.6% of the canals showed no extrusion while, 6.4% showed visible extrusion of the material outside the apex. In the control group, 83% showed no extrusion whereas 17% of the canals showed visible extrusion outside the apex. But no significant difference was noted (p>0.05). Conclusion: The placement of resorbable collagen barrier in the apical third of the canal prevented the extrusion of obturating material beyond the apex in resorbing primary molars.
