This article is an introduction to the work of electronic sound artist Scanner, which explores the place of memory, the cityscape and the relationship between the public and the private within contemporary sound art. Beginning with a historical look at his CD releases a decade ago, the article explores his move from his cellular phone works to his more collaborative digital projects in recent times. With descriptions of several significant performance works, public art commissions and film soundtrack work, the piece explores the resonances and meanings with the ever-changing digital landscape of a contemporary sound artist.

Abstract In this study, a new concept is introduced - gravitational cells. The body of a black hole consists of a huge number of such cells. This hypothesis from particle physics has been organically built into string theory. As a result, using the formula for the Schwarzschild radius and the Coulomb formula, a formula was obtained to determine the gravitational constant in the region of black holes and its value was determined. The value of the usual gravitational constant has been confirmed. Also, a new physical constant was obtained - the mass of the gravitational cell of a black hole. The introduction of the hypothesis of gravitational cells into string theory allowed us to apply Planck's formula to gravitational interaction. As a result, the formula for the quantum of the gravitational field was obtained and the frequency of vibrations of gravitational strings was calculated. Based on this, a formula was obtained to determine the mass of an electron. The electron mass calculated by the new formula coincided with the known experimental value. In this work, it was also proved that the vibration frequency of gravitational strings is directly proportional to the ratio of the mass of an electron and a proton inside the gravitational cell (and inside the atom). The formula for the dependence of the gravitational constant on the magnitude of the electron mass was obtained and confirming calculations were made.

Abstract Borne from the relevant and efficient expression in the context of contemporary culture, neo-protestant choral spirituality uses a diversified and meaningful language. From the very beginning of the existence of neo-protestant cults on the territory of our country, the establishment of a liturgical repertoire intended for common intonation or by various choral or vocal-instrumental bands has been one of the primordial preoccupations. Along with choral creations translated from the universal literature, there is a significant number of original works created by Romanian composers within the religious services. Due to extremely diverse themes and extrovert character, neo-protestant choral music includes different styles specific to the great tradition of classical, romantic or modern music as well as influences from the extra-European sphere. The text of these creations, which has biblical inspiration or created by the composer, is a means of great diversification in the reproduction of the sound material. Composers and arrangers with high quality music training and a profound understanding of biblical truths, through sound art wanted to contribute to the enrichment of contemporary neo-protestant choral music repertoire, leaving posterity a significant amount of valuable choral pages as inheritance.

The struggle to “adapt” to the presence of the corpse serves as the central turning point for this investigation into the theatrical encounters with the corpse in the early modern anatomy theatre. Beginning with novelist W.G. Sebald’s claim, in The Rings of Saturn, that the art of anatomy was a way of “making the reprobate body invisible,” Alvarez queries how the corpse as the central “gure of this theatrical space challenges conventional modes of theatrical looking and how the particular viewing procedures invited by the anatomy theatre, as a theatrical space, effectively make the body “unseen.” Using Restoration diarist Samuel Pepys’ documented encounter with a corpse and the early phenomenologist Aurel Kolnai’s writings On Disgust, Alvarez attempts to account for the “perceptual and interpretive black hole” that the corpse presents in this schema. The corpse’s “radical actuality” and, paradoxically, its “surplus of life” act as a cipher that cuts through the virtual space constructed by the anatomical demonstration, undermining the gravitas of the scientific gaze that has acquired its weight in contradistinction to the theatricality of the event. But the corpse’s “radical actuality” and its “surplus of life” introduces a danse macabre of theatrical looking that moves between absorption and repulsion, reversing the otherwise consumptive gaze of the onlooker.

ABSTRACT We study the relativistic viscous accretion flows around the Kerr black holes. We present the governing equations that describe the steady-state flow motion in full general relativity and solve them in 1.5D to obtain the complete set of global transonic solutions in terms of the flow parameters, namely specific energy (${\mathcal E}$), specific angular momentum (${\mathcal L}$), and viscosity (α). We obtain a new type of accretion solution which was not reported earlier. Further, we show for the first time to the best of our knowledge that viscous accretion solutions may contain shock waves particularly when flow simultaneously passes through both inner critical point (rin) and outer critical point (rout) before entering into the Kerr black holes. We examine the shock properties, namely shock location (rs) and compression ratio (R, the measure of density compression across the shock front) and show that shock can form for a large region of parameter space in ${\cal L}\!-\!{\cal E}$ plane. We study the effect of viscous dissipation on the shock parameter space and find that parameter space shrinks as α is increased. We also calculate the critical viscosity parameter (αcri) beyond which standing shock solutions disappear and examine the correlation between the black hole spin (ak) and αcri. Finally, the relevance of our work is conferred where, using rs and R, we empirically estimate the oscillation frequency of the shock front (νQPO) when it exhibits quasi-periodic (QP) variations. The obtained results indicate that the present formalism seems to be potentially viable to account for the QPO frequency in the range starting from milli-Hz to kilo-Hz as $0.386~{\rm Hz}\le \nu _{\mathrm{ QPO}} (\frac{10\, \mathrm{M}_\odot }{M_{\mathrm{ BH}}}) \le 1312$ Hz for ak = 0.99, where MBH stands for the black hole mass.

Working from a phenomenological position, the author investigates “in-head” acoustic localization in the context of the historical development of modern listening. Starting from the development of the stethoscope in the early 19th century, he traces novel techniques for generating space within the body and extrapolates from them into contemporary uses of headphones in sound art. The first half of the essay explores the history, techniques and technology of “in-head” acoustics; the second half presents three sound artists who creatively generate headphone spatializations. The essay ends with reflections on how these sound “imaging” techniques topologically shape our subjectivities.

Starting from an interdisciplinary perspective of methodological integration of the concepts of body and sound in the contemporary dance scene, this chapter addresses the general aesthetic notion ofsonorous body. Through a survey of some key practices and pieces by Wayne McGregor, Ginette Laurin, Angelin Preljocaj, Cindy Van Acker and others, the author analyzes the audiovisual dimension of these works, developed with digital technologies and in a collaboration of choreographers with electronic musician and sound artists such as Scanner, Kasper T. Toeplitz, Granular Synthesis, and Mika Vainio. This audiovisual tension, defined as the sonorous body, can be read through two interpretations. In the first, thesound is a body, which means the electronic sound of the scene is an acoustic material. In the second, the body is a sound, which means the body of the dancers produces the soundscape of a scene.

Introduction. The most economical type of spillway for rockfill dams with reinforced concrete screens are filtering outlet works (filter spillways). Deals with the main issue of designing filtering outlet works - assessment of their throughput on the basis of analytical solutions of turbulent filtration through the water intake of the filtering outlet works in rockfill dams with reinforced concrete screen. The objectives of the work are: • analysis of water flow in the filtering outlet work on the rockfill dam with reinforced concrete screen; • derivation of formulas for determining the throughput of the filtering outlet works on rockfill dams with reinforced concrete screen; • comparison of the results of determining the throughput of the filtering outlet works in the application of the proposed formulas; recommendations on the use of the proposed formulas. Materials and methods. The analysis of the water flow in the filtering outlet works and the derivation of the formulas is based on the adoption of three assumptions on the trajectory of the elementary streams of water in the filtering outlet works: on a circular trajectory, with a vertical fall, along the free fall trajectory with a gradient equal to one. Calculations of the throughput of the filtering outlet works were performed for the design of the filtering outlet works, patented by the author. Results. The results of calculations according to the proposed formulas showed a significant difference depending on the accepted hypothesis about the nature of the movement of the filtration flow in the body of the rockfill dam. It is revealed that the most acceptable calculations are based on the formula derived under the assumption of the flow motion along the free fall trajectory with a gradient equal to one. Conclusions. The results of the study made it possible to formulate the following recommendations: 1. The capacity of the filtering outlet works is recommended to be determined by the formula derived in the assumption of the flow motion along the free fall trajectory with a gradient equal to one, as more appropriate to the hydraulics of the filter spillways on the rockfill dams with the screen. 2. Further study of the hydraulics of the filter outlets works of various designs and analysis of their impact on the design of rockfill dams would allow for a more substantiated to determine their ability to pass the flood and recommend them for implementation.

Abstract Galaxies can grow through their mutual gravitational attraction and subsequent union. While orbiting a regular high-surface-brightness galaxy, the body of a low-mass galaxy can be stripped away. However, the stellar heart of the infalling galaxy, if represented by a tightly bound nuclear star cluster, is more resilient. From archival Hubble Space Telescope images, we have discovered a red, tidally stretched star cluster positioned ∼5″ (∼400 pc in projection) from, and pointing toward the center of, the post-merger spiral galaxy NGC 4424. The star cluster, which we refer to as “Nikhuli,” has a near-infrared luminosity of (6.88 ± 1.85) × 106 L ⊙,F160W and likely represents the nucleus of a captured/wedded galaxy. Moreover, from our Chandra X-ray Observatory image, Nikhuli is seen to contain a high-energy X-ray point source, with L 0.5 − 8 keV = 6.31 − 3.77 + 7.50 × 10 38 erg s−1 (90% confidence). We argue that this is more likely to be an active massive black hole than an X-ray binary. Lacking an outward-pointing comet-like appearance, the stellar structure of Nikhuli favors infall rather than the ejection from a gravitational-wave recoil event. A minor merger with a low-mass early-type galaxy may have sown a massive black hole, aided an X-shaped pseudobulge, and be sewing a small bulge. The stellar mass and the velocity dispersion of NGC 4424 predict a central black hole of (0.6–1.0) × 105 M ⊙, similar to the expected intermediate-mass black hole in Nikhuli, and suggestive of a black hole supply mechanism for bulgeless late-type galaxies. We may potentially be witnessing black hole seeding by capture and sinking, with a nuclear star cluster the delivery vehicle.

There is probably no more prolific writer on Greek American culture and history than anthropologist Steve Frangos. His essays span many realms of culture, but the body of work regarding early Greek American recordings is particularly strong. His essay on “George Katsaros: The Last Café-Aman Performer” examines early Greek musical forms and transformations as documented by the recording industry. By using the career of iconic musician Katsaros as an example, he finds a reflection of the collective Greek American experience and illustrates that Greek music must be viewed through the lens of modern music history in order to determine whether certain genres are created traditions.
