On the possible sources of the apocryphal motif “Satanael refuses to bow to Adam” in one early Christian passionThe article discusses the medieval literary works containing one of the variants of the apocryphal motif “the fall of the Rebel Angel from Heaven,” where Satanael calls himself “a fire flame” and refuses to bow to Adam, who was created “from mud.” A variant of this motif is found in the Slavonic version of an early anonymous Passion of St. George, while its Latin, Coptic and Ethiopian versions contain a more simplified variant – the reason for the refusal of the angel is his superior position in comparison to man. It seems possible that the Slavonic version preserved the original variant of the motif, known in the same form in only two more works – the Greek-Slavonic Apocalypse of Baruch (3 Baruch) and the Syriac Cave of Treasures, both of which preserved archaic features, whereas the Latin and the Oriental versions show traces of later changes. If this is indeed the case, the replacement of the earlier version occurred at a very early stage of the development of the text, probably already during the circulation of the Passion in Palestine or in Sinai. O możliwych źródłach apokryficznego motywu „Satanael odmawia złożenia hołdu Adamowi” w pewnej wczesnochrześcijańskiej pasjiW artykule przedstawiono średniowieczne dzieła literackie, zawierające jeden z wariantów motywu apokryficznego – upadek z nieba zbuntowanego anioła, w którym Satanael nazywa siebie samego „płomieniem ognia” i odmawia złożenia hołdu stworzonemu z błota Adamowi. Wariant tego motywu został odkryty w słowiańskiej wersji wczesnochrześcijańskiej Pasji św. Jerzego (anonimowego autora), podczas gdy wersje łacińska, koptyjska i etiopska przedstawiają ten wątek w sposób dalece uproszczony – powodem odmowy anioła jest jego wyższa pozycja w stosunku do człowieka. Wydaje się prawdopodobne, że słowiańska wersja zachowała oryginalny wariant motywu, występujący w tej samej formie tylko w dwóch jeszcze pracach – grecko­-słowiańskiej Apokalipsie Barucha (3 Baruch) i syryjskiej Grocie Skarbów, obu mających cechy archaiczne, podczas gdy w wersji łacińskiej i orientalnych widoczne są już zmiany. Jeśli faktycznie tak jest, to zastąpienie wcześniejszej wersji musiało nastąpić na wczesnym stadium rozwoju tekstu, prawdopodobnie już w czasie cyrkulowania Pasji w Palestynie lub na Synaju.

The rabbinic halakhic system, with its many facets and the literary works that comprise it, reflects a new Jewish culture, almost completely distinct in its halakhic content and scope from the biblical and postbiblical culture that preceded it. By examining Jewish legislation in the area of corpse impurity as a test case, the article studies the implications of Qumranic halakhah, as a way-station between the Bible and the Mishnah, for understanding how Tannaitic halakhah developed. The impression obtained from the material reviewed in the article is that the direction of the “Tannaitic revolution” was charted, its methods set up, and its principles established, at a surprisingly early stage, before the destruction of the Second Temple, and thus at the same time that the Qumran literature was created.

Abstract:As soon as Maximos Confessor had died on August 13th 662 due to the effects of dismemberment—his punishment, following a charge of high treason against him and his students—he was seen and revered as a martyr and saint by his followers. During their seven-year banishment, after the first trial in the year 655, those punished interpreted their deliberately accepted punishment as martyrdom, which they documented in literary works, which were later called lawsuit protocols. They modeled the texts upon early Christian martyr trials, and used many elements of the theology of martyrdom for self-identification. By doing so, the group of Palestinian monks that followed Maximos tried to defend themselves against the charges brought against them, arguing that their ecclesiastical, political, and theological enemies were like the persecutors. Because the motives of the punished are very clear, unlike those of the early Christian martyrs, it remains to be seen, whether or not the death of Maximos Confessor really is a martyrdom, especially considering the political and ecclesiastical intrigues as well as the provocative theological stubbornness of Maximos himself.

AbstractThe idea of this article is to determine the sense of the Logos in the Prologue of John's gospel by making use of the subsequent Christian doctrinal tradition. As an introduction, the general influence of Hellenistic Judaism on early Christian speculative theology and exegesis is illustrated by examples from Philo and Justin. Justin's exegesis is evaluated in accordance with the principle of Wilhelm Bousset, that learned scriptural demonstration (Schriftgelehrsamkeit) is not the source of doctrine but a post-rationalisation of existing doctrines. Then, Justin's argument from Scripture for Logos-Christology (Dial. 61–62), which is based on Genesis 1:26 and Wisdom 8:22–30, is taken as the point of departure. This argument informs us about the philosophical ideas behind Justin's Logos-Christology, which according to Bousset's principle preceded it. Further, it is argued that Justin's scriptural argument shows that the traditional derivation of the Logos of the Prologue from the word of creation of Genesis 1 did not exist at that early stage, since if it did, that derivation ought to have appeared in Justin. Since no other derivation of a Logos in the cosmological sense from the Bible is possible, the presence of this idea in John can only be explained as the result of influence from the eclectic philosophy of Jewish Hellenism (Philo). This conclusion is confirmed by the demonstration that the idea of universal innate knowledge, familiar from Justin's doctrine of the Logos, also appears in the Prologue of John. The argument for this is that it cannot be fortuitous that the traditional translation of John 1:9 lends itself to this interpretation. As the idea of universal innate knowledge is an idea unique to Greek philosophy, this observation settles the matter definitively. The origin of the traditional interpretation of the Logos goes back to Tertullian's interest in producing an exegesis that complies with the Latin translation of John 1.

The article examines the evolution of style traced in Sanskrit literature during the development of the genre of jātaka – the story of a previous life of Buddha – at an early stage of the genre's existence, represented by the anonymous collection “Avadāna-Śataka” (around 2nd century AD), and at the stage of the developed author literature, an example of which is the “Garland of Jātakas” by Haribhaṭṭa (4th to 5th centuries AD). The pre-literary jātaka in the Pali language is fairly well studied, while the literary works we consider here, being significant for the tradition, have hardly been studied in Russian science at all. Consideration of “Avadāna-Śataka” was carried out using the approaches of epic studies applied by Pavel Grintser to the “Mahābhārata” and “Rāmāyana”, which allowed us to reveal here the traces of the formulaic style characteristic of the oral existence of texts. These traces, however, are residual and indicate the stylisation of the text to the oral style of the pre-literary jātakas included in the Buddhist canon. In general, the text style is simple and monotonous; repetitions, catalogues and formulae are often found in it. We find a clear contrast to this picture in Haribhaṭṭa’s “Garland of Jātakas”, where features of the high court Sanskrit literature of the classical period (4th to 5th centuries AD) are obvious, to which this work has been proved to belong by indirect evidence. The article is devoted to a comparative analysis of the two literary works from the standpoint of historical poetics.

This essay will address how Origen, an early Christian writer, theologian, and pastor, referred to plagues, epidemics, and misfortunes, and how he construed these phenomena in his theology, literary works, and pastoral practice. A comparison with Porphyry will be offered, who likely drew part of his daemonology from Origen. Those responsible for plagues in both Origen’s philosophical theology and in Porphyry’s philosophy are δαίμονες (demons or fallen angels for Origen, daemons for Porphyry; Origen knew and referred to the two views). Porphyry’s attribution of his daemonology to “certain Platonists” who “divulged” these theories probably alludes to Origen and situates Origen within the Platonic school. I suspect that Porphyry was influenced by Origen’s demonology in general and possibly by On Daemons, if his. Porphyry’s terminology of “divulging” corresponds to that used in his anecdote about Origen who, notwithstanding the oath not to divulge Ammonius’ esoteric doctrines, nevertheless did so in On Daemons and The King Is the Only Creator. This indirectly confirms that Porphyry was speaking of the same Origen. Porphyry’s conviction that evil daemons are responsible for plagues, epidemics, and natural disasters is the same as Origen’s in Contra Celsum, which Porphyry knew. Origen was aware that spiritual plagues are worse than physical ones, that misfortunes mostly befall the just, and took over Jesus’ criticism of the ancient view of misfortunes as divine punishments for an individual or his parents or ancestors.

Любовные недоразумения с точки зрения теории разума, на материале раннего творчества Антона Чехова   В настоящей статье обращаемся к одной из главных тем чеховедения последних лет, т.е. к теме коммуникации. Для Чехова коммуникация является не только простым обменом мнений, но сама становится предметом интереса и тщательных наблюдений. Оттуда возникает вполне реалистический – учитывающий разные ошибки – образ человеческого общения в прозе Чехова, который, в свою очередь, поддается анализу с учетом разных методов. Мы предлагаем посмотреть на проблему недоразумений героев (в области любви) с точки зрения ошибочной теории разума. Мы присматриваемся нескольким текстам раннего творчества писателя (м.проч. Нервы, Верочка), в которых недоразумения являются эффектом именно неправильного понимания чужого сознания, эмоций и чувств. Чехов, таким образом, создал настоящий образ человеческой коммуникации, в которой язык является лишь одним из многих явлений, решающих о успехе в межчеловеческом общении.     Love misunderstanding in the light of theory of mind, based on Anton Chekhov’s early prose   In this article we endeavour to draw the attention to one of the most essential themes in the research on Chekhov’s literary works, being the problem of communication. For Chekhov communication is not only a simple exchange of points, but it itself becomes the matter of interest and in-depth observations. Hence, its entirely realistic – bearing in mind various errors – picture of human contacts in Chekhov’s prose, which in turn can be analysed by diverse methodologies. As a tool for observation of the misunderstandings between the heroes (in the area of love), there is the defective theory of mind employed. And a few texts from early stage of Chekhov’s career fall here under scrutiny (e.g. “Nervers’, ‘Verochka’). In these short stories, misunderstandings emerge from inaccurate reading of consciousness, emotions and feelings of others. In this way, the writer creates the real picture of communication, in which the language is only one of many phenomena determining the success in human relationships.

Classification of fuel in the early stage of fire is important to choose the appropriate type of extinguisher for extinguishing fire. This paper proposes a method of fuel prediction based on heat information for intelligent fire extinguisher in an indoor environment. Fire flame in the early stage is first detected based on patterns of differences between consecutive thermal image frames in which temperature grows up rapidly and reveals a sharp positive slope. Then candidate flame boundaries are detected in the thermal image frames during the early stage, and boundary matching is performed among the frames. These matched boundaries are classified as fire flame and fuel class based on LSTM (Long short-term memory) for extinguisher selection. Experiments were performed with 300 samples for classification into four classes of fuel, and the results based on 9:1 training and testing ratio showed 92.142% accuracy.

The article examines the problem of attribution of an essay from F. M. Dostoevsky's workbook of 1864—1867 (Russian State Archive of Literature and Art. Fund 212.1.5. p. 10), titled “The Usurer”. The novelty of the study is in that Nero (the artist), a character who emerged from the writer’s knowledge and concept of Emperor Nero, for the first time becomes the subject of detailed analysis. Based on the evidence from the classical and early Christian writers, as well as on scientific and literary works written during Dostoevsky’s lifetime, the author makes an argument for Nero’s figure to be considered a junction of at least three elements. He is not merely Nero-the-artist, but also Nero-the-persecutor of Christians and Nero-the Antichrist. This image reveals a ramified network of extensive ties with the preparatory materials for an early draft of “The Idiot”. Thus, it augments the aggregate of B. N. Tikhomirov’s arguments regarding other records, characters, motifs and prototypes in this essay. It also support his theory regarding “The Usurer”, which states that it is not the author’s independent and unexecuted idea, but, rather, should be examined in the framework of the creative history of “The Idiot”, specifically, its initial stage.

The Wobbler mouse (wr) has been studied as a model for inherited human motoneuron diseases (MNDs). Using behavioral tests for forelimb power, walking, climbing, and the “clasp-like reflex” response, the progress of the MND can be categorized into early (Stage 1, age 21 days) and late (Stage 4, age 3 months) stages. Age-and sex-matched normal phenotype littermates (NFR/wr) were used as controls (Stage 0), as well as mice from two related wild-type mouse strains: NFR/N and a C57BI/6N. Using behavioral tests, we also detected pre-symptomatic Wobblers at postnatal ages 7 and 14 days. The mice were anesthetized and perfusion-fixed for immunocytochemical (ICC) of CGRP and ChAT in the spinal cord (C3 to C5).Using computerized morphomety (Vidas, Zeiss), the numbers of IR-CGRP labelled motoneurons were significantly lower in 14 day old Wobbler specimens compared with the controls (Fig. 1). The same trend was observed at 21 days (Stage 1) and 3 months (Stage 4). The IR-CGRP-containing motoneurons in the Wobbler specimens declined progressively with age.

Recent commercial microscopes with internal microprocessor control of all major functions have already demonstrated some of the benefits anticipated from such systems, such as continuous magnification, rotation-free diffraction and magnification, automatic recording of mutually registered focal series, and fewer control knobs. Complete automation of the focusing, stigmating and alignment of a high resolution microscope, allowing focal series to be recorded at preselected focus values as well, is still imminent rather than accomplished, however; some kind of image pick-up and analysis system, fed with the electron image via a TV camera, is clearly essential for this, but several alternative systems and algorithms are still being explored. This paper reviews the options critically in turn, and stresses the need to consider alignment and focusing at an early stage, and not merely as an optional extension to a basic proposal.
