This article synthesises theory from the fields of marketing and communication to understand how the practices and outcomes of branding have evolved into systems of symbolic expression and community building. Through an exploration of parallel theoretical models of branding and mass communication, we posit a new theory of ‘networked branding’ that better takes into account how communicative power is distributed within a brand culture that is heavily mediated by networked communication technologies. Applying this theory of networked branding to the realm of politics we explore the ambivalent outcomes of branding in relation to capitalism and civic culture. Through an interrogation of two examples of networked branding from the political realm – the successful presidential campaign and subsequent administration of Donald Trump and the co-optation of the National Park Service’s brand by activists rallying against the Trump administration – this article explores how branding is utilised within politics as a platform for communication and social organisation. Drawing on the affective, interactive and social dynamics of modern mediatised branding, we interrogate the powers and limitations of consumer agency in contemporary brand culture.

ABSTRACT: Researching the insertion of digital information and communication technologies in the formative contexts involves problematizing teachers and students’ perceptions, appropriations and meanings about the issue. This text sought to identify the Brazilian scientific productions (theses and dissertations) regarding digital literacy in teacher education, between the years 2010 to 2018. We used the systematic review as a methodological procedure, with the help of the Parsifal software. We scored the following equations to verify the work: which research objectives do these productions reveal? What perspectives of digital literacy and what procedures and methodological instruments did the researchers adopt? What results of the digital literacy processes worked on in the training of teachers were revealed? As results, we validated 37 works, which point out the settings of training proposals with uses of digital technologies that seek to respond to the new social dynamics that student-teachers need to be able to. According to the research works found, the initial or continued training courses have lent themselves to insert the digital technologies, but the possibilities of uses are still many. KEYWORDS: digital literacy; teacher training; systematic review.

The Internet as a communication medium has become an increasing part of many people’s day-to-day working lives. As with the introduction of other mass communication technologies, issues surrounding use, abuse, and addiction have surfaced. For instance, according to a recent report carried out by the company SurfControl (Snoddy, 2000), office workers who while away one hour a day at work on various non-work activities (e.g., trading shares, booking holidays, shopping online, etc.) could be costing businesses as much as $35 million a year. The survey found that 59% of office Internet use was not work related and that those who traded in shares, played sports, shopped, and booked holidays cost companies the most. It is clear from research such as this that Internet abuse is a serious cause for concern — particularly to employers. This chapter has a number of objectives. It will first introduce readers to the concept of Internet addiction, before going on to look at the wider issue of Internet abuse in the workplace. Generic types of Internet abuse will be described, in addition to further examination of the reasons why Internet abuse occurs. The chapter ends with an overview of three very specific types of Internet abuse (i.e., online pornography, sexually related Internet crime, and online gambling), that will be of concern to employers, before concluding with some guidelines and recommendations for employers and human resources departments.

The new inclusive social dynamics is refocusing the intricacies of formation of social structures. The process of globalization is unifying various cultures leading to the creation of Multiculturalists society. As a corollary to this various ethnic groups are expanding their boundaries to form the larger social structures. The concept of spatial management relates to the management of spaces of various ethno- cultural formations into single social unit. This merging can be facilitated by building up mutual trust and respect for each other, which in turn can be reinforced by communicating with the help of Information and Communication Technologies. Hence the role of ICT in enhancing the process of unification is crucial as it pierces through the tightened boundaries of ethnic groups to develop the newer identities. This unveiled dimension is explored in this article, which focuses on the use of the technology in social reconfiguration.

This chapter analyzes the political circumstances and opportunities under which mobile phones emerge as a repertoire of contention. It argues that we should not just look at the use of communication technologies in contention. Instead, an investigation necessitates the perception of communication technologies as a repertoire of contention on the basis of affordances that structure the possibilities of the use of technology. Through fieldwork and in-depth interviews, this chapter indicates that taking (certain functions of) mobile phones as protest repertoire derives from a confluence of given social group’s habitus of media use that manifests particular affordances and the learned experience of the contested means of the past in official mass communication. More interestingly, communication and metacommunication of official media coverage of information and communication technology-mediated political activism modularizes and legitimizes the use of mobile phones in protests, and hence shapes specific ways people have harnessed their mobile phones as a key contentious repertoire.

People with intellectual disabilities face both societal and digital exclusion. This chapter focuses on the current state of evidence around the use of the Internet and Information Communication Technologies (ICT) by people with intellectual disabilities (ID). It considers the factors underpinning the digital exclusion of people with ID and the current levels and nature of Internet and ICT use by this group. It then discusses the benefits and barriers in relation to theoretical models and literature detailing the risks of being online and the role of support in facilitating and preventing digital inclusion. The chapter concludes by summarizing the current state of the research literature and highlighting areas where more research is required to increase the digital inclusion and self-determination of people with ID.

The article presents the results of the study that included the materials of two authors’ social polls (Nizhny Novgorod, 2020, n = 560) and the data on the search queries of Internet users from the WordStat service from “Yandex” company. The main research is dedicated to assessing technologies for influencing the socio-political activity of young people. Modern Russian society switches to the information type, which is characterized by the growing influence of new forms of communication technologies in various spheres of social life and strengthening of the ingrowth of such technologies into people’s lives. The number of Internet users grows every year, half of the users are representatives of the younger generation. In such conditions, the phenomenon of the Internet acquires particular importance as an interactive platform for mass communication and influence on political processes, which makes the study of new digital technologies for working with youth so relevant. The article describes and classifies modern technologies for promoting socio-political content in social networks popular among young people: selfactualization (hype and trend), self-expansion (autoposting), self-institutionalization (funnel).

Government ‘e-service’ as a subfield of the e-government domain has been gaining attention to practitioners and academicians alike due to the growing use of information and communication technologies at the individual, organizational, and societal levels. This paper conducts a thorough literature review to examine the e-service research trends during the period between 2005 and 2009 mostly in terms of research methods, theoretical models, and frameworks employed as well as type of research questions. The results show that there has been a good amount of papers focusing on ‘e-Service’ within the field of e-government with a good combination of research methods and theories. In particular, findings show that technology acceptance, evaluation and system architecture are the most common themes, which circa half of the studies surveyed focus on the organizational perspective and that the most employed research methods are case studies and surveys, often with a mix of both types of methodologies.

This chapter investigates how fast-changing mobile technology has transformed the traditional approach to journalism education at some major mass communication schools, media organizations, and institutions in the United States. This traditional approach to instruction, referred to here as its pedagogical niche, is defined as instructional methods, content, and tools used in mass communication academic, practice and training units. The first and primary objective of this chapter will be to determine how journalism academic institutions are using the rapidly changing media and communication technologies, particularly mobile tools, to reinvent themselves and to enhance their curricula and teaching effectiveness. The second objective is to determine how media organizations have adapted to the increasing use of mobile technologies in journalism.
