Rheological and Molecular Characterizations of Tire Rubber Modified Asphalt Emulsion

The aim of this study was to characterize the chemical, molecular, and rheological properties of different asphalt emulsions including a newly introduced tire-rubber modified asphalt emulsion (CRS-2TR). Three emulsions (CRS-2TR, CRS-2P, and CRS-2) and one asphalt rubber binder (AC20-5TR) were evaluated in this study. The superpave performance grade (PG), surface performance grade (SPG), and the multiple stress creep recovery (MSCR) test were conducted to evaluate the rheological properties of the binder residues. Evaluation of the differences in the functional groups, molecular weight distribution, and chemical composition of the asphalt binder residues was conducted using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), high-pressure gel permeation chromatography (HP-GPC), and saturates, aromatics, resins and asphaltenes (SARA) fractionation, respectively. The chemical and molecular characterization test results indicated that the tire-rubber modified emulsion had lower carbonyl indices and colloidal instability indices as compared to the other conventional emulsions, indicating a higher resistance to aging. On the other hand, the rheological test results showed that the performance of CRS-2TR was comparable to CRS-2P and was expected to perform better than CRS-2. In addition, the moisture susceptibility of the binder residues from the bitumen bond strength (BBS) test showed that CRS-2TR had a greater pull-off tensile strength in both dry and wet conditions as compared to CRS-2 and had statistically equal performance results as compared to CRS-2P.

Aiming to improve the comprehensive road performance of asphalt binders, especially the high-temperature performance, a novel asphalt binder was prepared by compounding high-quality and low-cost polyethylene (PE) with graphene (GNPs) using a high-speed shearing machine. The rheological properties and interaction mechanism of PE/GNPs composite modified asphalt were investigated using temperature sweep (TeS), multiple stress creep recovery (MSCR), linear amplitude sweep (LAS) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM). The experimental results demonstrated that GNPs and PE can synergistically improve the high-temperature performance of asphalt binders and enhance the rutting resistance of pavements; the pre-blended PE/GNPs masterbatch has good medium-temperature fatigue and low-temperature cracking resistance. Meanwhile, PE/GNPs dispersed uniformly in the asphalt matrix, and the microstructure and dispersion of premixed PE/GNPs masterbatch facilitated the asphalt modification. No new absorption peaks appeared in the FT-IR spectra of the composite modified asphalt, indicating that asphalt binders were physically modified with GNPs and PE. These findings may cast light on the feasibility of polyethylene/graphene composite for asphalt modification.

The objective of this study is to evaluate the long-term aging effect on the rheological properties of the modified PG 76-22/PG 76-16 binders produced from ground tire rubber (GTR) with various polymers after a long-term aging process. The tests included the investigation of G*sinδ, phase angle, amplitude sweep, frequency sweep, creep and creep recovery and stress relaxation in terms of three base binders and five polymers. The test results indicated that both base binder and polymer type affect the fatigue resistance, creep and creep recovery, viscoelastic property, and relaxation characteristic of each modified binder. In addition, terminally blended GTR binder has better fatigue resistance than laboratory blended GTR binder after a long-term aging procedure in this study. It seems that binders modified with polyphosphoric acid combined with 7% GTR exhibit more elastic properties and better rheological properties than other modified binders regardless of binder sources.

Lignin accounts for approximately 30% of the weight of herbaceous biomass. Utilizing lignin in asphalt pavement industry could enhance the performance of pavement while balancing the construction cost. This study aims to evaluate the feasibility of utilizing lignin as a bitumen performance improver. For this purpose, lignin derived from aspen wood chips (labeled as KL) and corn stalk residues (labeled as CL) were selected to prepare the lignin modified bituminous binder. The properties of the lignin modified binder were investigated through rheological, mechanical and chemical tests. The multiple stress creep recovery (MSCR) test results indicated that adding lignin decreased the Jnr of based binder by a range of 8% to 23% depending on the stress and lignin type. Lignin showed a positive effect on the low temperature performance of asphalt binder, because at −18 °C, KL and CL were able to reduce the stiffness of base binder from 441 MPa to 369 MPa and 378 MPa, respectively. However, lignin was found to deteriorate the fatigue life and workability of base binder up to 30% and 126%. With bituminous mixture, application of lignin modifiers improved the Marshall Stability and moisture resistance of base mixture up to 21% and 13%, respectively. Although, adding lignin modifiers decreased the molecular weight of asphalt binder according to the gel permeation chromatography (GPC) test results. The Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) test results did not report detectable changes in functional group of based binder.

This study has investigated the impact of graphene oxide (GO) in enhancing the performance properties of an asphalt binder. The control asphalt binder (60/70 PEN) was blended with GO in contents of 0%, 0.5%, 1%, 1.5%, 2%, and 2.5%. The permanent deformation behavior of the modified asphalt binders was evaluated based on the zero shear viscosity (ZSV) parameter through a steady shear test approach. Superpave fatigue test and the linear amplitude sweep (LAS) method were used to evaluate the fatigue behavior of the binders. A bending beam rheometer (BBR) test was conducted to evaluate the low-temperature cracking behavior. Furthermore, the storage stability of the binders was investigated using a separation test. The results of the ZSV test showed that GO considerably enhanced the steady shear viscosity and ZSV value, showing a significant contribution of the GO to the deformation resistance; moreover, GO modification changed the asphalt binder’s behavior from Newtonian to shear-thinning flow. A notable improvement in fatigue life was observed with the addition of GO to the binder based on the LAS test results and Superpave fatigue parameter. The BBR test results revealed that compared to the control asphalt, the GO-modified binders showed lower creep stiffness (S) and higher creep rate (m-value), indicating increased cracking resistance at low temperatures. Finally, the GO-modified asphalt binders exhibited good storage stability under high temperatures.

The pavement structure tends to shrink under low temperature conditions and cracks will appear upon crossing threshold binder stiffness. Decreasing the binder viscosity at such low temperatures, by introducing additional oil fraction (aromatics and saturates) in asphalt colloidal systems, may result in improved resistance to thermal cracking. A single multi-grade engine oil (5W30) was used in this study to analyze the rheological properties imparted to binders. Rotational Viscosity (RV) test revealed that after Rolling Thin Film Oven (RTFO) aging, fresh oil and waste oil have a similar effect on decreasing the viscosity of binder and construction temperatures, reducing them by 5~8 °C. Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) test results showed an abrupt increase of carbonyl concertation when fresh engine oil was used for rejuvenation while waste engine oil was less susceptible to oxidative aging. Dynamic analysis of modified binders proved that engine oil has better thermal cracking resistance but relaxation ability of binders and rutting resistance was impaired. Filtered waste engine oil resulted in a 35% decrement in the stiffness of binder compared to virgin asphalt after short term aging but upper Performance Grade (PG) was compromised by 1~3 °C with 2.5% oil inclusion. Unfiltered waste engine oil proved to have the least overall performance compared to fresh and filtered waste engine oil.

Dynamic shear test and creep shear test were employed to investigate the dynamic properties of various fiber modified asphalt binders with the fiber content of 1.0%. The test results indicate that complex shear modulus of asphalt binders containing fibers are increased while the phase angles are decreased greatly, which implies that the asphalt binder is reinforced by the addition of fibers and the elastic property of asphalt binder is improved significantly, especially at high frequency levels. The total strain during loading period and the residual strain after the creep shear test of asphalt binders are reduced greatly by the addition of fibers. Furthermore, the creep modulus of fiber modified asphalt binders is increased and the development rate versus loading time of creep modulus is decreased.

Sasobit additives with different dosages were added into 70# and 90# virgin asphalt binders to prepare WMA binders. The rheological properties, includingG∗andδ, were measured by using DSR at the temperature ranging from 46°C to 70°C, and the effects of temperature, additive dosage and aging onG∗/sin⁡δ, critical temperature, and H-T PG were investigated. The results indicate that WMA additive improvesG∗but reducesδ, and the improvement on 70# virgin binder is more significant.G∗/sin⁡δexponentially decreases with the increasing temperature but linearly increases with the increasing additive dosage. Aging effect weakens the interaction between binder and additive but significantly increases the binder’s viscosity; that is whyG∗/sin⁡δis higher after short-term aging. In addition, the critical temperature increases with the increasing additive dosage, and the additive dosage should be more than 3% and 5% to improve H-T PG by one grade for 70# and 90# virgin binder, respectively.

Pavement preservation is playing an increasingly significant role in maintaining our aged pavement infrastructure under severe budget constraints. One important component is the use of surface treatments based on application of sealants. Recently, a number of new products, called bio sealants, have been used to treat aging pavement surfaces. The objective of this study is to investigate rheological properties of the binders treated with these materials to understand the mechanism by which they may improve pavement performance. One plain asphalt binder and four types of sealants, two oil-based sealants, one water-based sealant, and one traditional emulsion were used in the experimental work. The results obtained using a dynamic shear rheometer and a bending beam rheometer were used to determine the changes in rheological properties and the change in performance grade. It was observed that the oil-based sealants have a significant softening effect of the control binder compared to the water-based sealants. The transverse cracking histories from field investigation were used to verify the laboratory findings.
