The Big Three Perfectionism Scale: Factor Structure and Measurement Invariance in a Turkish Sample

Perfectionism is a crucial concept in psychology as perfectionism has been found to be related to many important factors affecting daily and academic life. Many researchers have tried to measure perfectionism since 1980. Following an extensive literature review, Smith, Saklofske, Stoeber, and Sherry developed a new perfectionism scale called Big Three Perfectionism Scale (BTPS). The present study addressed the validation study of the BTPS in Turkish sample. The factor structure of the BTPS and measurement invariance across gender groups was tested with the Turkish sample. The BTPS was administered to 609 undergraduate students studying in different departments. Reliability analyses showed that the Turkish version of the scale had an excellent internal consistency. Data from Turkey demonstrated acceptable fit to the three-factor, 10-facet structure of BTPS. The results also indicated that there was no significant difference between fit indexes of configural, metric, and scalar invariance across gender.

Abstract. This study investigated the factor structure and measurement invariance of the Mroczek and Kolarz’s scales of positive and negative affect in Iran (N = 2,391) and the USA (N = 2,154), and across gender groups. The two-factor model of affect was supported across the groups. The results of measurement invariance testing confirmed full metric and partial scalar invariance of the scales across cultural groups, and full metric and full scalar invariance across gender groups. The results of latent mean analysis revealed that Iranians scored lower on positive affect and higher on negative affect than Americans. The analyses also showed that American men scored significantly lower than American women on negative affect. The significance and implications of the results are discussed.

This research investigates factors that may affect the level of acceptance of mobile marketing and determines if there is a relationship between these factors and the level of acceptance of mobile marketing. It separately investigates the most influential factors affecting the level of acceptance. This research was to investigate as well if there were differences in the readiness of undergraduate students regarding acceptance and factors leading to acceptance in terms of gender, age, education, and place. The research depends upon a sample of undergraduate students studying in universities. The researcher employed statistical techniques such as descriptive, correlation analysis, linear multiple regression, one-way Anova, and the post hoc test. The main findings from this research are that factors affecting acceptance were related to the level of acceptance of mobile marketing in the research field of reality. There is a significant difference between undergraduate students regarding factors affecting acceptance of mobile marketing; also there is a significant difference between undergraduate students regarding their readiness of acceptance in terms of some demographic characteristics.

Orientation: It is not clear from research whether the dualistic model holds true across binary ethnic and gender groups in the South African organisational context.Research purpose: The present research aimed to test the validity and reliability of the two-factor Passion Scale and to assess for measurement invariance of the two-factor scale across binary ethnic and gender groups in the South African context.Motivation of the study: The construct of passion helps to better understand some of the psychological attributes that contribute to experiences of either well-being or strain at work and is therefore an important attribute to measure.Research approach, design and method: The study involved a convenience sample (N = 550) of managerial and staff-level South African employees from various industries with a mean age of 34 years (SD = 10.95). Confirmatory factor analysis, exploratory structural equation modelling, t-tests and tests for measurement invariance were performed.Main findings: The results confirmed the validity and measurement invariance of the two-factor structure of the Passion Scale in the South African work context. The observed differences between the ethnic groups and men and women were practically small.Practical/managerial implications: Well-being interventions should consider the use of the Passion Scale as a measure of the psychological attributes that explain differentiating experiences of harmonious and obsessive passion in the workplace.Contribution/value-add: The findings provided encouraging evidence for the relevance and usefulness of the Passion Scale’s dualistic model of passion for people of different binary ethnic and gender groups in South African organisations.

Objectives: To explore the factors affecting academic performance ofundergraduate MBBS students in Central Park Medical College Lahore. Background: Inmedical education, academic achievement tends to be an important aspect of professionaldevelopment later in the life of medical graduates. In Pakistan, pre-admission grades are oneof the most important criteria for admission in medical colleges. Several other factors are alsobelieved to play an important role to predict performance of undergraduate students in medicalcolleges. A detailed study of these factors can help to improve the performance of studentsin medical colleges. Study Design: Cross-sectional analytical study. Setting: Central ParkMedical College, Lahore. Materials and methods:Two MBBS batches (n=200) of Central ParkMedical College. Student data regarding gender, parent occupation, being a boarder or dayscholar, marks scored in F.sc and MCAT along with the score obtained in all professionalexaminations was collected. The data was analyzed using SPSS 23.0. Results: Thisstudy revealed that there was a positive correlation between preadmission grades of studentsand their academic performance throughout the five year period of medical college. Therewas no significant difference (p-value >0.05) between the academic performances ofstudents from parents of medical background as compared to those from parents withoutany medical background. The performances of students living in hostels were almost same astheir counterparts who were day scholars (p-value>0.05). The overall performance of studentswas better in the final years of medical colleges as compared to the initial years with femalesperforming better than males. Conclusion: The findings of this study support the fact that preadmission grades may prove to be a predictor of performance later in professional college life.Factors like parent occupation and place of accommodation have little role in predicting theacademic achievement of medical students. Learning though interactive manner tend to helpin achieving better grades as compared to students who learn through less interactive/didacticlecture technique.

The present study examined the dimensionality and the measurement invariance of the Multicultural Ideology Scale (MCI; Berry & Kalin, 1995), and mean differences across different cultural groups within the multilingual, multicultural context of Luxembourg. Luxembourg is a unique context to study attitudes towards diversity because 47% of the citizens are non-nationals, and minority and majority are increasingly difficult to define. Our sample included 1,488 participants from diverse ethnic backgrounds who completed the survey in German, French or English. In contrast to previous findings, our analyses on responses to the MCI scale revealed a two-dimensional structure, distinguishing between positive and negative attitudes towards multiculturalism. The factor structure was partially invariant across ethnocultural groups: Configural and metric invariance were established across natives and non-natives and different language versions. Scalar invariance was only established across gender groups. Natives and male participants reported more negative attitudes towards multiculturalism. We discuss the importance of assessing measurement invariance and provide recommendations to improve the assessment of psychological multiculturalism.

The Penn State Worry Questionnaire (PSWQ) is a widely used assessment of excessive worry. American undergraduate samples have predominately been used to evaluate its factor structure, which may not generalize to other developmental, cultural, and psychopathology populations. The present study tested the PSWQ’s factor structure across three diverse samples: American undergraduate students ( n = 3,243), Dutch high school students ( n = 3,906), and American adults with psychopathology ( n = 384). Exploratory, confirmatory, and multigroup confirmatory factor analyses were conducted. Measurement invariance and concurrent validity were also tested. Method-factor and two-factor models were largely equivalent and superior to a one-factor model. Invariance tests supported configural and metric invariance but only partial scalar invariance. Positively worded items but not negatively worded items demonstrated concurrent validity with anxiety and depression symptom measures and diagnoses. Overall, the PSWQ appears to measure a unitary construct. Present results warrant further testing of the PSWQ across diverse samples.

Objectives: To identify the optimal factor structure of the behavioral inhibition system/behavioral activation system (BIS/BAS) scales and to examine measurement invariance (MI) of the scales across gender among a sample of Chinese undergraduate students.Methods: Convenience sampling was employed to recruit 1,085 subjects. Participants completed the Chinese version of the BIS/BAS scales. A confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) of competing models was conducted to determine the optimal factor model, followed by a test of MI across gender based on the optimal model.Results: A single-group CFA indicated that the modified four-factor structure fits best in the total sample. Multiple-group CFAs demonstrated that configural invariance, weak invariance, strong invariance, and strict invariance models of the four-factor structure of the BIS/BAS scales were all acceptable.Conclusion: The four-factor structure of the Chinese version of the BIS/BAS scales possesses MI across gender.

Abstract. There is substantial evidence that students in higher education who have sophisticated resource-management skills are more successful in their studies. Nevertheless, research shows that students are often not adequately prepared to use resource-management strategies effectively. It is thus crucial to screen and identify students who are at risk of poor resource management (and consequently, reduced academic achievement) to provide them with appropriate support. For this purpose, we extend the validation of a situational-judgment-based instrument called Resource-Management Inventory (ReMI), which assesses resource-management competency (including knowledge of resource-management strategies and the self-reported ability to use this knowledge in learning situations). We evaluated the ReMI regarding factor structure, measurement invariance, and its impact on academic achievement in different study domains in a sample of German first-year students ( N = 380). The results confirm the five-factor structure that has been found in a previous study and indicate strong measurement invariance. Furthermore, taking cognitive covariates into account, the results confirm that the ReMI can predict students’ grades incrementally. Finally, a multi-group analysis shows that the findings can be generalized across different study domains. Overall, we provide evidence for a valid and efficient instrument for the assessment of resource-management competency in higher education.

The current study examined the factor structure and the psychometric properties of Sandra Prince-Embury’s Resiliency Scale for Adolescents (RESA) in Chinese undergraduates. A total of 726 undergraduate students were randomly divided into two subsamples: Sample A was used for the exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and Sample B was used for the confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). The EFA revealed that 56 items and a model of 10 factors with 3 higher order factors (as described by Sandra) were to be retained; CFA with Sample B confirmed this result. The overall scale and the subscales of the Chinese-RESA demonstrated a high level of internal consistency. Furthermore, concurrent validity was demonstrated by the correlation of the scale with other instruments such as the PANAS and the CSS, and the predictive validity was confirmed via three multiple regression analyses using the PANAS as a criterion variable: one for the 10 subscales of the C-RESA, one for the 3 higher order scales, and one for the total C-RESA. We concluded that the C-RESA may be used for research into Chinese undergraduates’ adaptive behaviors.
