Prediction of lung cancer risk using circulating pro-surfactant protein B and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein among Egyptian workers in the rubber industry

Objective: For several decades, there has been increasing evidence for excess incidence of lung cancer among workers in the rubber industry. The purpose of this study was to assess the risk of lung cancer occurrence among Egyptian workers involved in the rubber industry using two circulating protein biomarkers. Methods: This study was performed in a rubber manufacturing factory in Shubra El-Kheima region in Greater Cairo, Egypt. Environmental assessment for the suspended particulate matter of size 10 µm (PM10) concentrations was done. Levels of plasma pro-surfactant protein B (pro-SFTPB) and serum high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (HsCRP) were measured among the studied population ( n = 155) who were divided into two groups. The first group included 75 workers exposed to rubber manufacturing process while the control group involved 80 administrative subjects. Results: The levels of PM10 neither exceeded the Egyptian nor the international permissible limits where the highest levels were observed in the mixing department. However, through medical history and clinical examination, it was observed that some general and respiratory manifestations were more prevalent among the exposed group when compared with their controls. Laboratory investigations revealed that the mean values of pro-SFTPB and HsCRP levels among exposed workers were significantly higher than those of the control group. These increased circulating proteins levels were strongly and positively correlated with each other and with the duration of employment of exposed workers. Conclusion: The study results support the conclusion that prolonged occupational exposure to rubber manufacturing process is associated with an elevated risk of lung cancer.

Abstract Objectives To compare high sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP) levels in children with type 1 diabetes, healthy controls, and children with obesity. Additionally, we aimed to analyze the association between hsCRP levels and glycemic control measured by glycohemoglobin A (HbA1c) and anthropometric and biochemical variables. Methods We conducted a non-randomized descriptive study of children with type 1 diabetes matched for sex and age with a control group and group with obesity. We recorded anthropometric parameters and studied variables related to diabetes, blood pressure, lipid profile, and HbA1c. HsCRP was measured by ELISA.Results We included 49 children with type 1 diabetes, 46 controls, and 40 children with obesity. hsCRP levels were significantly higher in the group with type 1 diabetes compared to controls and nearly significantly lower than in the group comprising children with obesity. We found no correlation between hsCRP and HbA1C and characteristics of type 1 diabetes with the exception of albuminin creatinine ratio (ACR). Statistically significant association was found between hsCRP and BMI and waist circumference Z-score. Conclusions Children with type 1 diabetes have a higher hsCRP than healthy subjects; this difference is not associated with HbA1c, but is related to waist circumference, BMI, and ACR. Obesity prevention should be a priority when performing follow-up in children with type 1 diabetes.

Systemic Lupus Erythematosus merupakan penyakit inflamasi autoimun kronis dengan gambaran klinis luas dan perjalanan penyakit beragam. Pemberian pristan intraperitoneal dapat menginduksi lupus pada mencit. Secretome sel punca mesenkimal bekerja secara parakrin memberikan efek antinflamasi dan imunomodulasi antara lain mensupresi sel T dan sel B autoreaktif. High Sensitivity C-Reactive Protein (hsCRP) terkait dengan patogenesis SLE dan selaras dengan aktifitas penyakit.Tujuan Penelitian adalah untuk mengetahui pengaruh secretome sel punca mesenkimal terhadap kadar hsCRP pada mencit model lupus dengan induksi pristan. Desain penelitian adalah eksperimental dengan randomisasi, post test only control group design, sampel 21 ekor mencit betina Mus Musculus galur Balb/C, dibagi 3 kelompok yaitu kelompok kontrol (injeksi intraperitoneal NaCl 0,9% 0,5 ml), kelompok perlakuan (injeksi pristan intraperitoneal 0,5 ml) dan kelompok terapi (injeksi intraperitoneal pristan 0,5 ml dan secretome 0,45 ml). Penelitian dilakukan selama 3 minggu, secretome diberikan pada akhir penelitian. Sesudah perlakuan dinilai kadar hsCRP secara ELISA. Analisis statistik menggunakan SPSS 22 for windows dengan uji Kruskal-Wallis dilanjutkan Mann-Whitney U test. P bermakna jika p<0,05. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa rata-rata kadar hsCRP pada ketiga kelompok yaitu kontrol 440.68(110.08-564.29) ng/ mL; perlakuan (pristan) 2964.26(601.13-3926.10) ng/mL; terapi pristan+secretome) 506.93(207.62-1473.46) ng/mL, dengan kemaknaan p=0.008. Terdapat perbedaan bermakna kadar hsCRP antara kelompok pristan vs pristan+secretome (2457.33 ng/mL; p=0.047). Secretome sel punca mesenkimal mampu menurunkan kadar hsCRP pada mencit model lupus dengan induksi pristan.Kata Kunci: High Sensitivity C-Reactive Protein, Nefritis lupus, Secretome

Background: Inflammation plays a pivotal role in the pathogenesis of In-Stent Restenosis (ISR). High sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP) is positively associated with major cardiovascular events. Aim: We aimed to investigate the hsCRP inflammatory response to Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI) in Coronary Artery Disease (CAD) patients with coronary ISR vs. patients without ISR. Methods: This case-control study included 80 CAD patients previously treated with drug-eluting stent (DES) implantation. Patients had Coronary Angiography (CAG) because of chest pain or equivalent symptoms and were subdivided into 2 groups. Group A (n=40) included CAD patients with ISR. Group B (n=40) included age and gender-matched controls with CAD but without ISR. Serum hsCRP levels were obtained before PCI (baseline) and 8, 16, 24 h post-PCI. Results: At baseline (before intervention/CAG), the hsCRP level was increased in the ISR group compared with the No-ISR group (p=0.007). There were 36 (90%) patients in the ISR group who had a high hsCRP (>3 mg/L) compared with 25 (62.5%) patients in the No-ISR group. Also, there was a significant relationship between high hsCRP and the ISR. Patients with ISR had higher frequencies and percentages of elevated CRP than the no-ISR control group. This difference was maintained for all measurements, baseline, after 8, 16, and 24 h (p<0.05). Repeated measures analysis of variance (ANOVA) in the ISR group revealed that mean hsCRP differed significantly between serial measurements (p<0.001). In contrast, in the control group, the mean hsCRP did not differ significantly between the serial measurements (p=0.65). Most of our patients (n=66, 82.5%) had 1-vessel CAD disease, and the left anterior descending (LAD) coronary artery was significantly affected in 46 patients (57.5%). Management of restenosis was accomplished mainly by stenting by DES in 29 patients (72.5%). Conclusion: Patients with ISR had substantially higher pre- and post-PCI hsCRP levels than the no-ISR controls. This difference was maintained up to 24h post-PCI. Conversely, the mean hsCRP did not significantly differ at the follow-up points for the controls without ISR.

Background. Previous studies have demonstrated that plasma high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP) was the predictor for unstable coronary plaque. Patients with noncalcified plaque (NCP) or mixed plaque (MP) have a higher risk of poor outcomes. However, the association between hsCRP and the presence of NCP or MP (NCP/MP) in old adults remains unclear, and if present, whether there exist differences between young and old adults remain unknown. Thus, the aim of this study was to investigate the role of hsCRP in predicting the presence of NCP/MP and evaluate whether age has any impact on this association. Methods. A total of 951 subjects were included in this study. Complete clinical and laboratory data were collected. According to the characteristics of the most stenotic plaque, we divided them into 2 groups: calcified plaque (CP) and NCP/MP. Subjects with no plaque were classified as the control group (CR). Subjects with age≥60 years were defined as older adults, and those with age<60 years were classified as nonelderly people. Results. Patients with NCP/MP had significantly higher hsCRP level compared with subjects with CR or CP in older adults but not in nonelderly people. The proportion of NCP/MP was significantly increased from 27.0% in the hsCRP<1.25 mg/L group to 42.7% in the hsCRP>2.70 mg/L group in older adults. Multiple logistic regression analysis showed that hsCRP was an independent risk factor for the presence of NCP/MP (odds ratio OR=1.093, 95% CI 1.032–1.157, P=0.001) only in older adults. Conclusions. hsCRP is independently associated with the presence of NCP/MP in older adults but not in nonelderly people. These results suggest the potential significance of hsCRP-lowering regimens in older adults with NCP/MP.

Endothelial dysfunction is involved in the process of acute myocardial infarction (AMI), that is, the endothelial cell–specific molecule 1 (ESM-1; endocan) is a novel endothelial dysfunction marker. However, the relationship between patients with AMI and serum ESM-1 levels is not very clear. Patients with AMI (n = 216) and a control group (n = 60) without AMI were included in the study. High-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP) was measured, and the severity of AMI was assessed by a modified Gensini stenosis scoring system. Serum ESM-1 levels were significantly higher in the AMI group ( P < .05). High-sensitivity C-reactive protein levels were also significantly higher in the AMI group ( P < .05). In patients with AMI, serum ESM-1 levels were not significantly correlated with hsCRP levels. There was no significant correlation between serum ESM-1 level and Gensini score. Our findings suggest that serum ESM-1 levels may be a novel biomarker of endothelial dysfunction in patients with AMI.

Objectives. There are limited clinical data revealing the relationship between mitral annular calcification (MAC) and systemic inflammation. The goal of the present study was to compare high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) levels in patients with and without MAC and investigate the relationship between MAC and hs-CRP.Methods. One hundred patients with MAC who underwent transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) and 100 age-matched controls without MAC who underwent TTE were included in our study. Hs-CRP levels were compared between groups.Results. Prevalence of female gender, hypertension, and coronary artery disease were significantly higher in the MAC group than in the control group (64% versus 45%,P=0.007, 42% versus 28%,P=0.03and 37% versus 18%,P=0.003, resp.). On multivariate analysis, age, gender, and coronary artery disease were the only independent predictors of MAC. The levels of hs-CRP were higher in the MAC group than in the control group (2.02±0.35versus1.43±0.47 mg/dl,P<0.001). This increase in hs-CRP levels in the MAC group persisted in patients without hypertension, coronary artery disease, and in male patients when compared to the control group.Conclusions. Our study demonstrated that hs-CRP, which is a sensitive marker of systemic inflammation, increased in patients with MAC.

Cardiac markers play an important role in prognosis and follow-up treatment. Therefore, it is of great practical significance to study the detection methods of high-sensitivity C-reactive protein cardiac markers. The purpose of this paper is to study the optimal method for the detection of cardiac markers of high-sensitivity C-reactive protein. In this paper, the significance of cardiac markers and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein and the relationship between them and myocardial infarction were first described. The BCA method for the purification and identification of C-reactive protein was studied, and then the determination and optimization of high-sensitivity C-reactive protein and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein in healthy people were further understood. To explore the application of serum high sensitive C-reactive protein in the detection of cardiac markers in 50 patients with acute myocardial infarction and 50 healthy people. The results showed that the experimental group was (21.57 ± 1.50), (37.62 ± 1.66), (529.20 ± 5.72), (95.79 ± 6.24) ng / ml, the control group was (0.90 ± 1.10), (1.71 ± 0.14), (35.25 ± 4.21), (0.99 ± 0.71) ng / ml, and the difference between the two groups was statistically significant (P < 0.05).

C-Reactive Protein is a marker of inflammation and vascular disease. The high serum of high-sensitivity C-Reactive Protein (hs-CRP) concentration was associated with interruption the integrity of the frontal-subcortical circuit. To determine the correlation between high serum concentration of hs-CRP and executive function disorder in elderly patients. Thirty six elderly patients was examined by using a case control study. The subjects were enrolled from the out-patient at Neurology Department Dr. Soetomo General Hospital, Surabaya, Indonesia. The time period was 4 months (April to July 2015). Executive function was measured with the Trail Making Test B (TMT B) and divided into two groups, case and control. Complete blood count and serum hs-CRP concentration were measured from nonfasting blood samples. Chi-square test was used for data analysis. Eighteen subjects were enrolled in the case group (3 men, 15 women) and the other 18 subjects were enrolled in the control group (4 men, 14 women). Executive function disorder was found in 17 (94,4%) subjects of case group and 11 (61,1%) subjects of control group. High levels of hs-CRP was not associated with executive function, with p = 0,149 and adjusted OR 5,629 (CI 95% 0, 538-58, 860). These data suggested that high levels of hs-CRP was not associated with executive function in elderly patients.
