Study of a synchronizer mechanism through multibody dynamic analysis

The synchronizer mechanism represents the essential component in manual, automatic manual, and dual-clutch transmissions. This paper describes a multibody dynamic model for analysis of a synchronizer mechanism subjected to different operational conditions. The three-dimensional multi-dynamic model is developed to predict the dynamic response of synchronizer, especially for calculation of synchronization time. For the purpose of validation, three different synchronizers (single-cone, double-cone, and triple-cone synchronizers) were used on the test rig machine. For the purpose of synchronizing time estimation, an analytical formulation is proposed. The results of the analytical and multibody dynamic analyses were compared with the experimental data, showing a good agreement. The results of analytical and numerical approaches show that the predicted time of synchronization is more precise than previous works. A sensitivity analysis was performed on the single-cone synchronizer, and the effect of tolerance dimension on the dynamic behavior of the synchronizer was reported.

The aim of the present research is to characterize both experimentally and numerically journal bearings with low radial clearances for rotors in small-scale applications (e.g., microgas turbines); their diameter is in the order of ten millimetres, leading to very small dimensional clearances when the typical relative ones (order of 1/1000) are employed; investigating this particular class of journal bearings under static and dynamic loading conditions represents something unexplored. To this goal, a suitable test rig was designed and the performance of its bearings was investigated under steady load. For the sake of comparison, numerical simulations of the lubrication were also performed by means of a simplified model. The original test rig adopted is a commercial rotor kit (RK), but substantial modifications were carried out in order to allow significant measurements. Indeed, the relative radial clearance of RK4 RK bearings is about 2/100, while it is around 1/1000 in industrial bearings. Therefore, the same original RK bearings are employed in this new test rig, but a new shaft was designed to reduce their original clearance. The new custom shaft allows to study bearing behaviour for different clearances, since it is equipped with interchangeable journals. Experimental data obtained by this test rig are then compared with further results of more sophisticated simulations. They were carried out by means of an in-house developed finite element (FEM) code, suitable for thermoelasto-hydrodynamic (TEHD) analysis of journal bearings both in static and dynamic conditions. In this paper, bearing static performances are studied to assess the reliability of the experimental journal location predictions by comparing them with the ones coming from already validated numerical codes. Such comparisons are presented both for large and small clearance bearings of original and modified RKs, respectively. Good agreement is found only for the modified RK equipped with small clearance bearings (relative radial clearance 8/1000), as expected. In comparison with two-dimensional lubrication analysis, three-dimensional simulation improves prediction of journal location and correlation with experimental results.

A new type of self-bearing motor that uses Lorentz-type forces to generate both bearing force and motoring torque has been developed. The motor stator is of slotless construction with four three-phase windings. The motor rotor is constructed of 16 surface mounted permanent magnets (PM’s). The main advantage of the design is that it eliminates the tradeoff between motoring torque and bearing force with PM thickness as found in previous designs. This paper presents the dynamic model for the self-bearing motor and illustrates how the model is integrated into the overall system model of the motor test rig. The dynamic model is validated against experimentally measured transfer functions with good agreement between the two.

Excessive torque and drag in the wellbore can result in the buckling and the failure of the drillstring. Accurate predicting torque and drag is important in drilling operations. Due to the nature of the drilling, determination of torque and drag is a dynamic problem. A multibody dynamic model of the drillstring for the torque and drag analysis is developed here. Unlike traditional softstring models and stiffstring models, the developed model relaxes the assumption of continuous contact between the drillstring and the wellbore. Moreover, this model can account for overall rigid motion, three-dimensional (3D) rotation and large deformation of the drillstring with large-scale slenderness ratio and random contact between the drillstring and the wellbore. The effects of local protuberant components of the drillstring, such as the drillpipe subs and the stabilizers are also incorporated in the current model, which are not considered in most of existing models. Numerical analysis with three cases is carried out to show the application of the developed model in predicting torque and drag in the wellbore.

Time-accurate numerical predictions of the interactional aerodynamics between NASA's generic ROBIN fuselage and its four-bladed rotor were performed using the recently developed Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes solver HAMSTR. Two stencil-based reconstruction schemes (MUSCL, WENO), a second-order temporal accuracy, and the Spalart–Allmaras turbulence model were used. Three-dimensional volume meshes were created in a robust manner from two-dimensional unstructured surface grids using Hamiltonian paths and strands on nearbody domains. Grid connectivity was established between nearbody and background domains in an overset fashion. Two previously researched operational conditions were reproduced, i. e., a near-hover case and a medium-speed forward flight case at an advance ratio of 0.151. The results were compared with various experimental and numerical references and were found to be in good agreement with both. The comparison included the analysis of the rotor wake structure, tip-vortex trajectories, steady and dynamic fuselage pressure distributions in longitudinal and lateral directions, and rotor inflow predictions.

<p>Optimizing the solubility of small molecules is important in a wide variety of contexts, including in drug discovery where the optimization of aqueous solubility is often crucial to achieve oral bioavailability. In such a context, solubility optimization cannot be successfully pursued by indiscriminate increases in polarity, which would likely reduce permeability and potency. Moreover, increasing polarity may not even improve solubility itself in many cases, if it stabilizes the solid-state form. Here we present a novel physics-based approach to predict the solubility of small molecules, that takes into account three-dimensional solid-state characteristics in addition to polarity. The calculated solubilities are in good agreement with experimental solubilities taken both from the literature as well as from several active pharmaceutical discovery projects. This computational approach enables strategies to optimize solubility by disrupting the three-dimensional solid-state packing of novel chemical matter, illustrated here for an active medicinal chemistry campaign.</p>

Rotating systems components such as rotors, have dynamic characteristics that are of great importance to understand because they may cause failure of turbomachinery. Therefore, it is required to study a dynamic model to predict some vibration characteristics, in this case, the natural frequencies and mode shapes (both of free vibration) of a centrifugal compressor shaft. The peculiarity of the dynamic model proposed is that using frequency and displacements values obtained experimentally, it is possible to calculate the mass and stiffness distribution of the shaft, and then use these values to estimate the theoretical modal parameters. The natural frequencies and mode shapes of the shaft were obtained with experimental modal analysis by using the impact test. The results predicted by the model are in good agreement with the experimental test. The model is also flexible with other geometries and has a great time and computing performance, which can be evaluated with respect to other commercial software in the future.

The microwave oven has become a standard appliance to reheat or cook meals in households and convenience stores. However, the main problem of microwave heating is the non-uniform temperature distribution, which may affect food quality and health safety. A three-dimensional mathematical model was developed to simulate the temperature distribution of four ready-to-eat sausages in a plastic package in a stationary versus a rotating microwave oven, and the model was validated experimentally. COMSOL software was applied to predict sausage temperatures at different orientations for the stationary microwave model, whereas COMSOL and COMSOL in combination with MATLAB software were used for a rotating microwave model. A sausage orientation at 135° with the waveguide was similar to that using the rotating microwave model regarding uniform thermal and electric field distributions. Both rotating models provided good agreement between the predicted and actual values and had greater precision than the stationary model. In addition, the computational time using COMSOL in combination with MATLAB was reduced by 60% compared to COMSOL alone. Consequently, the models could assist food producers and associations in designing packaging materials to prevent leakage of the packaging compound, developing new products and applications to improve product heating uniformity, and reducing the cost and time of the research and development stage.

This paper uses empirical traffic data collected from three locations in Europe and the US to reveal a three-phase fundamental diagram with two phases located in the uncongested regime. Model-based clustering, hypothesis testing and regression analyses are applied to the speed–flow–occupancy relationship represented in the three-dimensional space to rigorously validate the three phases and identify their gaps. The finding is consistent across the aforementioned different geographical locations. Accordingly, we propose a three-phase macroscopic traffic flow model and a characterization of solutions to the Riemann problems. This work identifies critical structures in the fundamental diagram that are typically ignored in first- and higher-order models and could significantly impact travel time estimation on highways.
