Spray dynamics simulations for pulsatile injection at different ambient pressure and temperature conditions

A numerical study on the transient characteristics of a pulsatile, iso-octane spray issuing from a pressure-swirl atomizer is presented. The effects of system pressure and temperature, as well as the initial fuel temperature on spray dispersion and evaporation, are highlighted. The computations were carried out using ANSYS FLUENT-15.0, assuming the spray dispersion to be axisymmetric. Gas phase turbulence is simulated using the renormalized group k- ε model, while the discrete phase model is used for tracking fuel droplets. The linear instability sheet atomization model is adopted for the primary breakup of the liquid sheet, and the Taylor Analogy Breakup and Wave Breakup models are adopted for the secondary breakup, depending upon the operating conditions. The drag force on the droplet is evaluated, after incorporating the effects of evaporation and neighbouring droplets, along with droplet shape distortion. The significance of droplet collision on the evolution of droplet size distribution is examined. The local mean drop sizes and spray penetration length are in agreement with the experimental results of the literature. The predicted results indicate that the spray is narrower and penetrates less at higher ambient pressure. In this respect, the additional force on droplets due to local static pressure gradient is examined in detail. The effect of ambient conditions on the spray evaporation process is studied based on the spatio-temporal evolution of the equivalence ratio of the mixture of fuel vapour and air.

Recent investigations have indicated that aircraft engine exhaust emissions are sensitive to ambient conditions. This paper reports on combustor rig testing intended to evaluate variations due to ambient temperature and pressure with special emphasis on idle engine operating conditions. Empirically determined CO, CxHy, and NOx correction factors — the ratio of the pollutant emission index value obtained during standard day operation to that resulting during actual ambient conditions — are presented. The effects of engine idle cycle pressure ratio, primary zone fuel-air ratio, and fuel type were investigated. Ambient temperature variations were seen to cause substantial emission changes; correction factors in excess of 2.0 were determined in some cases. Ambient pressure variations were found to be less substantial. A previously published NOx emission model and a simplified hydrocarbon combustion analysis are shown to be in general agreement with the empirical results.

Recent experimental studies on a production heavy-duty diesel engine have shown that gasoline compression ignition (GCI) can operate in both conventional mixing-controlled and low-temperature combustion modes with similar efficiency and lower soot emissions compared to diesel at a given engine-out NOx level. This is primarily due to the high volatility and low aromatic content of high reactivity, light-end fuels. In order to fully realize the potential of GCI in heavy-duty applications, accurate characterization of gasoline sprays for high-pressure fuel injection systems is needed to develop quantitative, three-dimensional computational fluid models that support simulation-led design efforts. In this work, the non-reacting fuel spray of a high reactivity gasoline (research octane number of ∼60, cetane number of ∼34) was modeled under typical heavy-duty diesel engine operating conditions, i.e., high temperature and pressure, in a constant-volume combustion chamber. The modeling results were compared to those of a diesel spray at the same conditions in order to understand their different behaviors due to fuel effects. The model was developed using a Lagrangian-Particle, Eulerian-Fluid approach. Predictions were validated against available experimental data generated at Michigan Technological University for a single-hole injector, and showed very good agreement across a wide range of operating conditions, including ambient pressure (3–10 MPa), temperature (800–1200 K), fuel injection pressure (100–250 MPa), and fuel temperature (327–408 K). Compared to a typical diesel spray, the gasoline spray evaporates much faster, exhibiting a much shorter liquid length and wider dispersion angle which promote gas entrainment and enhance air utilization. For gasoline, the liquid length is not sensitive to different ambient temperatures above 800 K, suggesting that the spray may have reached a “saturated” state where the transfer of energy from the hot gas to liquid has already been maximized. It was found that higher injection pressure is more effective at promoting the evaporation process for diesel than it is for gasoline. In addition, higher ambient pressure leads to a more compact spray and fuel temperature variation only has a minimal effect for both fuels.

The purpose of this paper is to study the pressure drop of an axial flow cyclone separator as a function of inlet velocities using experimental and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) methods. First, the resistance performance of the separator was acquired under ambient pressure and temperature with little change by wind tunnel experiments. Then, numerical simulations were carried out in CFD code Fluent 6.3 under standard operating conditions. A comparison between the experimental and CFD data demonstrates that the CFD method can predict the pressure drop of the axial cyclone separator excellently. Additionally, the results show that the axial flow cyclone separators have a pressure drop coefficient of approximately 7.5. To study the effect of ambient pressure and temperature on pressure drops, the same CFD method was employed to predict the resistance performance under various operating conditions. Then the numerical results were compared with the data of a normalization process method of pressure drops raised in this paper. Their comparison demonstrated that the normalization method had a high precision in predicting the influence of ambient operating parameters on pressure drops of an axial flow cyclone separator.

AbstractHere we report a comprehensive numerical study for the operating behavior and physical mechanism of nitride micro-light-emitting-diode (micro-LED) at low current density. Analysis for the polarization effect shows that micro-LED suffers a severer quantum-confined Stark effect at low current density, which poses challenges for improving efficiency and realizing stable full-color emission. Carrier transport and matching are analyzed to determine the best operating conditions and optimize the structure design of micro-LED at low current density. It is shown that less quantum well number in the active region enhances carrier matching and radiative recombination rate, leading to higher quantum efficiency and output power. Effectiveness of the electron blocking layer (EBL) for micro-LED is discussed. By removing the EBL, the electron confinement and hole injection are found to be improved simultaneously, hence the emission of micro-LED is enhanced significantly at low current density. The recombination processes regarding Auger and Shockley–Read–Hall are investigated, and the sensitivity to defect is highlighted for micro-LED at low current density.Synopsis: The polarization-induced QCSE, the carrier transport and matching, and recombination processes of InGaN micro-LEDs operating at low current density are numerically investigated. Based on the understanding of these device behaviors and mechanisms, specifically designed epitaxial structures including two QWs, highly doped or without EBL and p-GaN with high hole concentration for the efficient micro-LED emissive display are proposed. The sensitivity to defect density is also highlighted for micro-LED.

A numerical study of non-linear, high amplitude standing waves in non-cylindrical circular resonators is reported here. These waves are shock-less and can generate peak acoustic overpressures that can exceed the ambient pressure by three/four times its nominal value. A high fidelity compressible computational fluid dynamic model is used to simulate the phenomena in cylindrical and arbitrarily shaped axisymmetric resonators. A right circular cylinder and frustum of cone are the two geometries studied. The model is validated using past numerical and experimental results of standing waves in cylindrical resonators. The non-linear nature of the harmonic response of the frustum of cone resonator system is investigated for two different working fluids (carbon dioxide and argon) operating at various values of piston amplitude. The high amplitude non-linear oscillations demonstrated can be used as a prime mover in a variety of applications including thermoacoustic cryocooling.

Three-dimensional numerical simulation was conducted to investigate the flow field and heat transfer performance of the Cross-Wavy Primary Surface (CWPS) recuperators for microturbines. Using high-effective compact recuperators to achieve high thermal efficiency is one of the key techniques in the development of microturbine in recent years. Recuperators need to have minimum volume and weight, high reliability and durability. Most important of all, they need to have high thermal-effectiveness and low pressure-losses so that the gas turbine system can achieve high thermal performances. These requirements have attracted some research efforts in designing and implementing low-cost and compact recuperators for gas turbine engines recently. One of the promising techniques to achieve this goal is the so-called primary surface channels with small hydraulic dimensions. In this paper, we conducted a three-dimensional numerical study of flow and heat transfer for the Cross-Wavy Primary Surface (CWPS) channels with two different geometries. In the CWPS configurations the secondary flow is created by means of curved and interrupted surfaces, which may disturb the thermal boundary layers and thus improve the thermal performances of the channels. To facilitate comparison, we chose the identical hydraulic diameters for the above four CWPS channels. Since our experiments on real recuperators showed that the Reynolds number ranges from 150 to 500 under the operating conditions, we implemented all the simulations under laminar flow situations. By analyzing the correlations of Nusselt numbers and friction factors vs. Reynolds numbers of the four CWPS channels, we found that the CWPS channels have superior and comprehensive thermal performance with high compactness, i.e., high heat transfer area to volume ratio, indicating excellent commercialized application in the compact recuperators.

It is usual that fuel system of an aero-engine operates within a wide range of temperatures. As a result, this can have effect on both the characteristics and precision of fuel metering unit (FMU), even on the performance and safety of the whole engine. This paper provides theoretical analysis of the effect that fluctuation of fuel temperature has on the controllability of FMU and clarifies the drawbacks of the pure mathematical models considering fuel temperature variation for FMU. Taking the electrohydraulic servovalve-controlled FMU as the numerical study, simulation in AMESim is carried out by thermal hydraulic model under the temperatures ranged from −10 to 60 °C to confirm the effectiveness and precision of the model on the basis of steady-state and dynamic characteristics of FMU. Meanwhile, the FMU testing workbench with temperature adjustment device employing the fuel cooler and heater is established to conduct an experiment of the fuel temperature characteristics. Results show that the experiment matches well with the simulation with a relative error no more than 5% and that 0–50 °C fuel temperature variation produces up to 5.2% decrease in fuel rate. In addition, step response increases with the fuel temperature. Fuel temperature has no virtual impact on the steady-state and dynamic characteristics of FMU under the testing condition in this paper, implying that FMU can operate normally in the given temperature range.

The paper presents the results of an investigation on inlet air cooling systems based on cool thermal storage, applied to combined cycle power plants. Such systems provide a significant increase of electric energy production in the peak hours; the charge of the cool thermal storage is performed instead during the night time. The inlet air cooling system also allows the plant to reduce power output dependence on ambient conditions. A 127MW combined cycle power plant operating in the Italian scenario is the object of this investigation. Two different technologies for cool thermal storage have been considered: ice harvester and stratified chilled water. To evaluate the performance of the combined cycle under different operating conditions, inlet cooling systems have been simulated with an in-house developed computational code. An economical analysis has been then performed. Different plant location sites have been considered, with the purpose to weigh up the influence of climatic conditions. Finally, a parametric analysis has been carried out in order to investigate how a variation of the thermal storage size affects the combined cycle performances and the investment profitability. It was found that both cool thermal storage technologies considered perform similarly in terms of gross extra production of energy. Despite this, the ice harvester shows higher parasitic load due to chillers consumptions. Warmer climates of the plant site resulted in a greater increase in the amount of operational hours than power output augmentation; investment profitability is different as well. Results of parametric analysis showed how important the size of inlet cooling storage may be for economical results.

Abstract The lateral stability of railroad vehicles travelling on tangent tracks is one of the important problems that has been the subject of extensive research since the nineteenth century. Early detailed studies of this problem in the twentieth century are the work of Carter and Rocard on the stability of locomotives. The linear theory for the lateral stability analysis has been extensively used in the past and can give good results under certain operating conditions. In this paper, the results obtained using a linear stability analysis are compared with the results obtained using a general nonlinear multibody methodology. In the linear stability analysis, the sources of the instability are investigated using Liapunov’s linear theory and the eigenvalue analysis for a simple wheelset model on a tangent track. The effects of the stiffness of the primary and secondary suspensions on the stability results are investigated. The results obtained for the simple model using the linear approach are compared with the results obtained using a new nonlinear multibody based constrained wheel/rail contact formulation. This comparative numerical study can be used to validate the use of the constrained wheel/rail contact formulation in the study of lateral stability. Similar studies can be used in the future to define the limitations of the linear theory under general operating conditions.

As a common phenomenon in elastohydrodynamic lubrication, cavitation has an effect on the completeness of the oil film in the contact area. Many studies have therefore been conducted on cavitation. Experimental researches on cavitation usually rely on optical interference observation, which offers a limited resolution and observation range. In this paper, an infrared thermal camera is used to observe the cavity bubbles on a ball-on-disc setup under sliding/rolling conditions. The results show that the cavity length increases with an increases of the entrainment speed and the viscosity of the lubricants. These observations are explained by a numerical model based on Elrod's algorithm. Effects of entrainment speed and lubricant viscosity on the breakup of cavitation bubbles and the cavitation states are investigated. Both the simulation and experimental results show that a negative pressure area is present behind the Hertzian contact area. The ambient pressure plays a role in maintaining cavitation state 1. The cavitation pressure is close to the vacuum pressure when the entrainment speed is low and to the ambient pressure instead when the entrainment speed is high.
