Investigation of the flow energy dissipation law in a centrifugal impeller in pump mode

Centrifugal impeller is usually designed for water pumping. Fluid get energy from impeller but also lose energy when passing through it. To improve the efficiency and have a better operation stability, it is necessary to understand the flow energy dissipation in centrifugal impeller in pump mode. In this case, a thermodynamic analysis is conducted on a model centrifugal pump unit based on computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation. Typical performance curve is found with a positive-slope efficiency curve and a negative-slope head curve. With the decreasing of flow rate, both the impeller head and the flow energy dissipation (FED) will rise up. The FED is found related to the flow regime. The complex undesirable flow pattern induces high FED under off-design conditions especially at very small partial-load. Based on the visualization, FED is found with two main sources including the wall friction and the flow interaction. At over-load and design-load, the wall friction induced FED is dominant. With the decreasing of flow rate, flow interaction induced FED becomes dominant. The typical strong FED sites are found related to the striking, separation, merging and interaction of both smooth flow and vortical flow. The FED analysis will correlate the pump performance estimation and guide the design.

During the recent period intensive research has focused on the advancement of engineering and technology aspects concerning the development and optimization of wave and current energy converters driven by the need to increase the percentage of marine renewable sources in the energy-production mix, particularly from offshore installations. Most stream energy-harvesting devices are based on hydro-turbines, and their performance is dependent on the ratio of the blade-tip speed to incident-flow speed. As the oncoming speed of natural-occurring currents varies randomly, there is a penalty for the latter device’s performance when operating at non-constant tip-speed ratio away from the design value. Unlike conventional turbines that are characterized by a single degree of freedom rotating around an axis, a novel concept is examined concerning hydrokinetic energy converters based on oscillating hydrofoils. The biomimetic device includes a rotating, vertically mounted, biomimetic wing, supported by an arm linked at a pivot point on the mid-chord. Activated by a controllable self-pitching motion the system performs angular oscillations around the vertical axis in incoming flow. In this work, the performance of the above flapping-foil, biomimetic flow energy harvester is investigated by application of a semi-3D model based on unsteady hydrofoil theory and the results are verified by comparison to experimental data and a 3D boundary element method based on vortex rings. By systematical application of the model the power extraction and efficiency of the system is presented for various cases including different geometric, mechanical, and kinematic parameters, and the optimal performance of the system is determined.

An optimization of the inlet ring groove arrangement has been pursued in the present study for obtaining better impeller characteristics and a wider operation range at both small and large flow rates in a high specific speed type centrifugal impeller with inducer. The effects of the shape parameters with respect to the inlet ring groove on the impeller characteristic and the flow incidence were analyzed mainly based on numerical simulations, but also compared to the experimental results. At small flow rates, a significant improvement in the impeller characteristic is achieved due to reduction in the excessive-positive flow incidence by optimizing both location and width of the rear groove near the inducer tip throat. On the other hand, the impeller characteristic is improved at large flow rates by implementing the corner radius at the rear groove edge and by placing another front ring groove in the suction pipe. As a result, by the optimized configuration of the front and rear ring grooves, the unstable flow range of the test impeller can be reduced by about 50% without deterioration of the impeller characteristic even at the 125% flow rate.

Centrifugal compressors used for turbochargers need to achieve a wide operating range. The author has developed a high pressure ratio centrifugal compressor with pressure ratio 5.7 for a marine use turbocharger. In order to enhance operating range, two different types of recirculation devices were applied. One is a conventional recirculation device. The other is a new one. The conventional recirculation device consists of an upstream slot, bleed slot and the annular cavity which connects both slots. The new recirculation device has vanes installed in the cavity. These vanes were designed to provide recirculation flow with negative preswirl at the impeller inlet, a swirl counterwise to the impeller rotational direction. The benefits of the application of both of the recirculation devices were ensured. The new device in particular, shifted surge line to a lower flow rate compared to the conventional device. This paper discusses how the new recirculation device affects the flow field in the above transonic centrifugal compressor by using steady 3-D calculations. Since the conventional recirculation device injects the flow with positive preswirl at the impeller inlet, the major difference between the conventional and new recirculation device is the direction of preswirl that the recirculation flow brings to the impeller inlet. This study focuses on two effects which preswirl of the recirculation flow will generate. (1) Additional work transfer from impeller to fluid. (2) Increase or decrease of relative Mach number. Negative preswirl increases work transfer from the impeller to fluid as the flow rate reduces. It increases negative slope on pressure ratio characteristics. Hence the recirculation flow with negative preswirl will contribute to stability of the compressor. Negative preswirl also increases the relative Mach number at the impeller inlet. It moves shock downstream compared to the conventional recirculation device. It leads to the suppression of the extension of blockage due to the interaction of shock with tip leakage flow.

Lateral centrifugal impeller forces are calculated using the CFD model developed in Part I of this paper. The impeller forces are evaluated by integrating the pressure and momentum profiles at both the impeller inlet and exit planes. Direct impeller lateral force measurements were made using a magnetic bearing supported pump rotor. Comparisons between the simulated and measured forces are first made for both average and transient impeller forces with water as the working fluid. Air was then substituted as the working fluid in the validated CFD model and the effect of impeller Mach number and Reynolds number on the static impeller lateral forces was investigated. The non-dimensional lateral impeller force characteristics as a function of normalized flow coefficient are similar in character between the incompressible and compressible case. At the matching point flow coefficient the non-dimensional impeller force magnitude was the same for all compressible and incompressible simulations. For any normalized flow rate other than the matching point flow rate, the magnitude of the non-dimensional impeller force increased as the Mach number increased. As the choke condition was approached the magnitude of the impeller force increased exponentially. As the Mach number increased the transition of the force orientation vector from the low flow asymptote to the high flow asymptote occurred over a progressively smaller range of flows.

This research study the experimental performance of broad-crested weir with single-step by introducing U/S and D/S round-nose and  analysing the parameters that have effect on the shape of the step and their effects on the flow characteristics and energy dissipation (E%) downstream (D/S) of the weir. Furthermore, empirical relations for E% and flow rate due to the influencing factors were derived. The results showed that the weir model with  = 1.000 gives a higher E% in comparison with other weir models. Flow regimes were observed i.e nappe flow for small discharges, transition flow for intermediate discharges and skimming flow for higher discharges. Two model equations were obtained, the first to dteremine the flow rate over the weir models and the second relation to estimate E% in terms of, and Froude number. The model () can be used in the design of prototype weirs in terms of energy dissipation

<p>A debris flow with a high speed along valleys has been reported to cause serious damages to urban area or infrastructure. To prevent debris flow disaster, countermeasures for flow-impeding structures are installed on the flow path of debris flows. Recently, an installation of cylindrical baffles which are open-type countermeasures has increased because of a low construction cost, filtering out rocks, and an increased hydraulic continuity. However, a comprehensive design guideline for specification and arrangement on cylindrical baffles has not yet been suggested. Moreover, the design of baffle installation is mainly based on empirical approaches as the influence of baffle array on debris mobility is not well understood. In this study, to investigate the effect of cylindrical baffles on the flow characteristics of debris flow, a series of small-scale flume tests were performed according to the varying baffle height and row numbers of installed baffles. High-speed cameras and digital camera to record the flow interaction with baffles were installed at the top and side of the channel. To reproduce the viscosity of debris flows caused by fine-grained soil in the flume, glycerin was mixed with debris materials (sand and gravel). After the test, the velocity and energy dissipation according to various baffle arrays were estimated. Test results showed that the installation of baffles reduced the frontal velocity of debris flows. Furthermore, taller baffles also increased the effect of the energy dissipation in debris flows, but additional rows of the baffle did not have a major effect on the energy dissipation. Thus, increasing the height of baffle led to an increased efficiency of energy dissipation of debris flows.</p>

Three-dimensional flows and their influence on the stagnation pressure losses in a centrifugal compressor impeller have been studied. All 3 mutally perpendicular components of relative velocity and stagnation pressure on 5 cross-sectional planes, between the inlet and outlet of a 1 m dia shrouded impeller running at 500 rpm were measured. Comparisons were made between results for a flow rate corresponding to nearly zero incidence angle and two other flows, with increased and reduced flow rates. These detailed measurements show how the position of separation of the shroud boundary layer moved downstream and the wake’s size decreased, as the flow rate was increased. The wake’s location, at the outlet of the impeller, was also observed to move from the suction surface at the lowest flow rate, to the shroud at higher flow rates.

The CFD performance estimation of turbo booster vacuum pump shows the axial vortex and back flow is evident when the mass flow rate is increased. The pressure is increased from the pump inlet to the outlet for the low mass flow rate cases. But for high mass flow rate cases, the pressure is increased until the region near the end of the rotor then decreased. The calculated inlet pressure, compression ratio, and pumping speed is increased, decreased, and decreased, respectively, when the mass flow rate is increased. The pumping speed is increased when the rotor speed is increased.
