Since stories increasingly take on pictorial and mixed-medial forms, narratology needs to investigate to what extent narrative devices exceed the boundaries of a specific medium. One way to examine this issue is to focus on film adaptations of narratologically complex novels or stories. This article presents a detailed comparison of the narration in McEwan’s (1982) [1981] The Comfort of Strangers and Schrader’s (1990) film based on a scenario by Harold Pinter. It is shown how the novel creates deliberate confusion (via free indirect speech and thought) about the agency responsible for the conveyance of crucial information, and how the film finds non-verbal means to achieve the same effect.

The subject of this article’s comparative intermedial analysis is the phenomenon of disrupted communication in the novel by the German writer Theodor Fontane “Effi Briest” (1895) and in the film adaptation of this work by Rainer Werner Fassbinder “Fontane Effi Briest” (1974). The article consists of five parts: 1) introduction; 2) analysis of dialogues in Fontane’s novel; 3) description of the means of creating the effect of disrupted communication in Fassbinder’s film; 4) comparative analysis of some fragments of two works by the method of close reading; 5) conclusions. Methodologically, the research is based on the achievements of the theory of communication, carpalistics, comparative and intermedial approaches to the study of film adaptations. The main point of the article is that the effect of disrupted communication, which is observed in numerous dialogues of Fontane’s novel, is also created by visual means in Fassbinder’s film, among which a significant place is occupied by a gesture. The gesture of turning away deserves special attention: the characters of the film turn away from each other, turn their backs to the interlocutor and the viewer, turn to their reflection. The unconventionality and intensity of such gestures accentuate the problematic nature of communication between the characters. This structure, peripheral in Fontane’s work, becomes central in the film of Fassbinder, grasping the viewers’ attention. In this regard, the article adds to a traditional discussion about the hierarchical relationship between a literary text and its film adaptation.

In non-isolated bidirectional DC-DC converters (NIBIDC), voltage output of buck/boost mode is incongruous at lower and higher end due to the existing gain. In this paper, a novel NIBIDC is designed in such a way that it enhances the gain in both buck and boost mode of operation. The proposed NIBIDC is employed with four power switches (MOSFET) with an anti-parallel diode embodied, four inductors and three capacitors used as passive elements. The current flow in parallel connected inductor improves the circuit competence. Voltage gain of NIBIDC in buck operation is lower than conventional cascaded bidirectional buck/boost converter (CCBBC) whereas the voltage gain is higher than CCBBC in boost mode. The switching stress is same while the efficiency of NIBIDC is more than CCBBC. The topology structure of the NIBIDC is simple and easy to control. The performance analysis under steady-state condition of the novel converter is carried out and a detailed comparison with CCBBC is done in connection to switching stress, converter efficiency and duty ratios to output power, etc. The operation details for proposed NIBIDC in both mode is verified/validated by experimenting with 20[Formula: see text]V input for different duty ratios in charging and discharging state of a battery and the results infer to be identical with theoretical analysis.

This article examines the representation of the natural environment and its non-human inhabitants in Andrea Arnold's 2011 film version of Emily Brontë’s Wuthering Heights. Arnold's ‘post-heritage’ adaptation, I argue, offers a post-humanist distribution of attention that, in its expansive interest in flora and fauna, exceeds the perspectives of its human protagonists, challenges popular ideas about the novel and subverts the conventions of mainstream narrative cinema. The film's intensely ecological and environmental orientation functions not only to divide our attention across human and non-human realms but also to counter nostalgic and ultimately ideological idealisations of ‘white’ and ‘English’ natural landscapes and rural lifestyles. Such idealisations have been extrapolated from Brontë’s novel, have informed earlier film adaptations and continue to have a material impact on the geographical region popularly known as ‘Brontë country’.

A new topology for simultaneous AC-DC distribution along the same line is proposed in this paper to integrate DC power with the existing alternating current (AC) distribution, which incorporates a zigzag transformer and a boost chopper. The zigzag transformer is utilized to achieve either coupling or decoupling of the AC and DC power without sensible iron-core saturation due to voltage canceling out on one phase. The boost chopper is used to achieve DC power flow and keep the DC ratings at each node. A simulation model of the novel topology is established with PSCAD software, and detailed comparison verifies that the new topology with a zigzag transformer is preferable to that with a common transformer for simultaneous AC-DC distribution scheme, indicating a promising future of the proposed technology.

Bakhtin’s views (1980:127-130) on the importance of studying speech representation and its interaction with authorial context incited prolific research in various disciplines. The research presented in this paper is based on Bakhtin’s crucial claims about speech representation, and on the theoretical framework of linguistic stylistics (Kovačević 2011, 2012, 2013, 2015; Katnić-Bakaršić 2001) and representology (Kovačević 2015:253-254). The aim of this paper is twofold—to identify the types of speech, thought and writing representation employed in the novel Sense and Sensibility and to describe their interaction with the authorial context. The method applied is‘word by word’ analysis, where in the first stage the modes of speech, thought and writing representation are identified; in the next stage their interaction with authorial context is described. The modes of speech are classified and differentiated by combining the classifications of representation modes in Serbian and English (Leech and Short 2007; Semino and Short 2004; Kovačević 2013). The results of the analysis prove that Jane Austen employs the following modes to repоrt speech, thought and writing: indirect speech/thought/writing, narrator’s report of speech act/ thought act/writing act, expressive indirect speech/thought, free indirect speech/thought, direct speech (monologue, dialogue, polylogue), free direct speech, line of dialogue, fragmental quote, hypothetical speech, direct thought, free direct thought, direct writing, embedded speech/thought. Predominantly, the line of interaction between authorial speech and direct speech involves the former being parenthetically embedded into foregrounded direct speech, amalgamating with the free indirect thought/speech or having as an attachment a ”package” of different embedded modes of speech/thought/writing representation. Primarily indirect thought, free indirect thought, direct thought, and free direct thought are the modes employed to characterise Elinor Dashwood, while on the other side the modes of direct speech, free direct speech, free indirect speech and direct writing combined with numerous mimetic markers prevail in depicting her sister Marianne. It is through the stylistically effective transitions between these modes and their interaction with the authorial context that the total antithetical effect regarding the sense and sensibility principles is obtained on the syntactic-stylistic level.

Bacteriophages are viruses that specifically infect a bacterial host. They play a great role in the modern biotechnology and antibiotic-resistant microbe era. Since the discovery of phages, their application as a control agent has faced challenges that made antibiotics a better fit for combating pathogenic bacteria. Recently, with the novel sequencing technologies providing new insight into the nature of bacteriophages, their application has a second chance to be used. However, novel challenges need to be addressed to provide proper strategies for their practical application. This review focuses on addressing these challenges by initially introducing the nature of bacteriophages and describing the phage-host-dependent strategies for phage application. We also describe the effect of the long-term application of phages in natural environments and other bacterial communities. Overall, this review gathered crucial information for the future application of phages. We predict the use of phages will not be the only control strategy against pathogenic bacteria. Therefore, more studies must be done for low-risk control methods against antimicrobial-resistant bacteria.
