Various structural health monitoring methods were recently applied to fault diagnosis of rotating machinery, in which vibration response–based techniques demonstrated to be well adapted for different scenarios. However, only severe cracks are detected when most of such techniques are applied. Thus, innovative methods are proposed to identify the existence of incipient cracks in rotating shafts. In a previous contribution, the combination resonance approach for crack identification purposes was presented. This method is based on the application of additional forces at combination frequencies along with a heuristic optimization method to identify crack signatures in the vibration responses of the rotor. In the present work, the best conditions to apply the combination resonance approach are investigated in terms of the amplitude and frequency of the so-called diagnostic force. The vibration responses and phase angles of a cracked rotor were determined by using the harmonic balance technique. The FLEX approach is used to model the crack. Numerical simulations were performed using the finite element model of a horizontal rotor.

Linear and nonlinear normal mode motions may provide promising information about the condition of mechanical structures under small and large amplitude vibrations, respectively. In this view, this study investigates the nonlinear dynamics of cracked beams through use of the nonlinear mode motion and extends the crack identification methods that utilize the linear characteristics to nonlinear vibrating structures. At first, the nonlinear normal modes of the intact and cracked beams are calculated by a continuation algorithm. A finite element model of a geometrically nonlinear prismatic beam was created based on crack stress intensity. Subsequently, a method based on normal mode motion and minimization of strain energy, which is valid for linear and nonlinear vibrating beams, was developed as an optimization problem. To this end, hybrid optimization was also used due to its capability in finding global minimum along with its computational efficiency. It was shown that the proposed crack detection technique is applicable to beams vibrating in linear and/or nonlinear regimes and well capable of detecting both crack location and severity.

This paper presents a novel real-time crack identification method to determine the position and depth of a transverse open crack on a rotating shaft. Wireless accelerometer capable of being mounted directly on the shaft is employed to monitor acceleration at different points of the shaft in a rotating coordinate system. The vibration parameters obtained from the wireless sensors and Finite Element Model provide operational data to perform Modal Analysis with different mock crack positions and depths, and an unique relation between the vibration parameters and crack characteristics is developed by Neural Networks Method working as function approximator to predict the crack size and location on the shaft. The method was experimentally validated and results have shown that the crack detection sensitivity parameters depend on the acceleration signals at different points of the shaft.

Reliable damage detection over large areas of structures can be achieved by spatially quasi-continuous structural health monitoring enabled by two-dimensional sensing sheets. They contain dense arrays of short-gauge sensors, which increases the probability to have sensors in direct contact with damage (e.g. crack opening) and thus identify (i.e. detect, localize, and quantify) it at an early stage. This approach in damage identification is called direct sensing. Although the sensing sheet is a reliable and low-cost technology, the overall structural health monitoring system that is using it might become complex due to large number of sensors. Hence, intentional reduction in number of sensors might be desirable. In addition, malfunction of sensors can occur in real-life settings, which results in unintentional reduction in the number of functioning sensors. In both cases, reduction in the number of (functioning) sensors may lead to lack of performance of sensing sheet. Therefore, it is important to explore the performance of sparse arrays of sensors, in the cases where sensors are not necessarily in direct contact with damage (indirect sensing). The aim of this research is to create a method for optimizing the design of arrays of sensors, that is, to find the smallest number of sensors while maintaining a satisfactory reliability of crack detection and accuracy of damage localization and quantification. To achieve that goal, we first built a phase field finite element model of cracked structure verified by the analytical model to determine the crack existence (detection), and then we used the algorithm of inverse elastostatic problem combined with phase field finite element model to determine the crack length (quantification) and location (localization) by minimizing the difference between the sensor measurements and the phase field finite element model results. In addition, we experimentally validated the method by means of a reduced-scale laboratory test and assessed the accuracy and reliability of indirect sensing.

Lightweight of wheel hubs is the linchpin for reducing the unsprung mass and improving the vehicle dynamic and braking performance of vehicles, thus, sustaining stability and comfortability. Current experience-based lightweight designs of wheel hubs have been argued to render uneven distribution of materials. This work develops a novel method to combine the reverse modeling technique with the topological optimization method to derive lightweight wheel hubs based on the principles of mechanics. A reverse modeling technique is first adopted to scan and reproduce the prototype 3D geometry of the wheel hub with solid ribs. The finite element method (FEM) is then applied to perform stress analysis to identify the maximum stress and its location of wheel hub under variable potential physical conditions. The finite element model is then divided into optimization region and nonoptimized region: the former is the interior portion of spoke and the latter is the outer surface of the spoke. A topology optimization is then conducted to remove the optimization region which is interior material of the spokes. The hollow wheel hub is then reconstructed with constant wall thickness about 5[Formula: see text]mm via a reverse modeling technique. The results show that the reconstructed model can reduce the mass of 12.7% compared to the pre-optimized model. The present method of this paper can guarantee the optimal distribution of wheel hub material based on mechanics principle. It can be implemented automatically to shorten the time interval for optimal lightweight designs. It is especially preferable for many existing structures and components as it maintains the structural appearance of optimization object.

Abstract In underwater unmanned vehicles, complex acoustic transducer arrays are always used to transmitting sound waves to detect and position underwater targets. Two methods of obtaining low-sidelobe transmitting beampatterns for acoustic transmitting arrays of underwater vehicles are investigated. The first method is the boundary element model optimization method which used the boundary element theory together with the optimization method to calculate the driving voltage weighting vector of the array. The second method is the measured receiving array manifold vector optimization method which used the measured receiving array manifold vectors and optimization method to calculate the weighting vector. Both methods can take into account the baffle effect and mutual interactions among elements of complex acoustic arrays. Computer simulation together with experiments are carried out for typical complex arrays. The results agree well and show that the two methods are both able to obtain a lower sidelobe transmitting beampattern than the conventional beamforming method, and the source level for each transmitting beam is maximized in constraint of the maximum driving voltage of array elements being constant. The effect of the second method performs even better than that of the first method, which is more suitable for practical application. The methods are very useful for the improvement of detecting and positioning capability of underwater unmanned vehicles.

The electronics package in a spacecraft is subjected to a variety of dynamic loads during launch phase and suitable thermal environment for the mission life. The dynamic and thermal analyses performed for a structurally reconfigured electronics package. Two different simulation models are developed to carry out the analyses. This paper discusses in two parts, in part-1, the vibration responses are determined at various critical locations, including on the Printed Circuit Board (PCB) for the vibration loads specified by launch vehicle using Finite Element Analysis (FEA). The mechanical properties of PCB are determined from the test specimens, which are then incorporated in the finite element model. In part-2, the steady-state temperature distributions on the components and on the PCB are determined, to check the effectiveness of heat transfer path from the components to the base of the package and to verify the predicted values are within the acceptable temperature limits specified. The predicted temperature values are then compared with on-orbit observations.

Abstract Gear mechanisms are one of the most significant components of the power transmission systems. Due to increasing emphasis on the high-speed, longer working life, high torques, etc. cracks may be observed on the gear surface. Recently, Machine Learning (ML) algorithms have started to be used frequently in fault diagnosis with developing technology. The aim of this study is to determine the gear root crack and its degree with vibration-based diagnostics approach using ML algorithms. To perform early crack detection, the single tooth stiffness and the mesh stiffness calculated via ANSYS for both healthy and faulty (25-50-75-100%) teeth. The calculated data transferred to the 6-DOF dynamic model of a one-stage gearbox, and vibration responses was collected. The data gathered for healthy and faulty cases were evaluated for the feature extraction with five statistical indicators. Besides, white Gaussian noise was added to the data obtained from the 6-DOF model, and it was aimed at early fault diagnosis and condition monitoring with ML algorithms. In this study, the gear root crack and its degree analyzed for both healthy and four different crack sizes (25%-50%-75%-100%) for the gear crack detection. Thereby, a method was presented for early fault diagnosis without the need for a big experimental dataset. The proposed vibration-based approach can eliminate the high test rig construction costs and can potentially be used for the evaluation of different working conditions and gear design parameters. Therefore, catastrophic failures can be prevented, and maintenance costs can be optimized by early crack detection.

Structural responses have been used as inputs in the evaluation procedures of civil structures for years. Apart from the degradation of a structure itself, changes in the environmental conditions affect its characteristics. For adequate maintenance, it is necessary to quantify the environment-induced changes and discriminate them from the effects due to damage. This study investigates the variation in the vibration responses of prestressed concrete (PC) girders, which were deteriorated because of the alkali–silica reaction (ASR), concerning ambient temperature and humidity. Three PC girders were exposed to outdoor weather conditions outside the laboratory, one of which had a selected amount of fly ash in its mixture to mitigate the ASR. The girders were periodically vibration tested for one and a half years. It was found that when the temperature and humidity increased, the frequencies and damping ratios decreased in proportion. No apparent variation in the mode shapes could be identified. A finite element model was proposed for numerical verification, the results of which were in good agreement with the measured changes in the natural frequencies. Moreover, the different dynamic performances of the three specimens indicated that the fly ash significantly affected the vibrations of the PC girders under ASR deterioration.

A new approach is proposed for calculating natural frequencies and crack detection in a stepped cantilever beam with arbitrary number of cracks. This is based an explicit expression of the natural frequencies in term of crack parameter derived in the form similar to the so-called Rayleigh quotient for vibrating beam. The obtained simple relationship between natural frequencies and crack parameters enables not only accurate calculating the natural frequencies but also to develop an efficient procedure for detecting multiple cracks from given natural frequencies. The proposed technique called crack scanning method is illustrated and validated by numerical results.

The objective of this work is to use natural frequencies for the localization and quantification of cracks in beams. First, to study the effect of the crack on natural frequencies, a finite element model of Euler–Bernoulli is presented. Concerning the damaged element, the stiffness matrix is calculated by the theory of fracture mechanics, by inverting the flexibility matrix. Then, in order to detect damage, we are going to show that the shape given by the change in the natural frequencies is as function of the damage position only. Thus, the crack is located by the correlation between the shape of the measured frequencies and those obtained by the finite elements, where the position that gives the calculated shape which is the most similar to the measured one, indicates the crack position. After the localization, an inverse method will be applied to quantify the damage. Finally, an experimental application is presented to show the real applicability of the method, in which the crack is introduced by using an Electrical Discharge Machining. The results confirm the applicability of the method for the localization and the quantification of cracks.
