High strength-to-weight ratio materials are used in the automotive and aerospace industries, and AlSi10Mg is suitable for those applications. The research aims to compare and investigate the wear characteristics of selective laser melted AlSi10Mg pin against two counter bodies, EN-31 hardened steel, and silicon carbide abrasive sheet. The wear rate of additively manufactured AlSi10Mg pin at 0° building orientation was investigated using the box Behnken design approach to identify the suitable wear parameters with the pin on the disc testing facility. Based on analysis of variance, the interaction of load with sliding distance significantly influenced the wear rate of AlSi10Mg in both counter body cases. The adhesion and abrasion wear mechanism were observed in AlSi10Mg with EN-31 and silicon carbide abrasive sheet, respectively. The findings reveal the effect of two counter bodies on the SLMed AlSi10Mg wear phenomenon. Finally, severe wear was observed in the AlSi10Mg pin against the silicon carbide counter body.

Titanium (Ti-6Al-4V) alloy is very attractive for many applications due to its high strength-to-weight ratio and high corrosion resistance. Even then, with these attractive properties, it has poor shear strength and surface wear properties. This study is therefore undertaken to investigate the effect of sliding parameters on the surface wear behavior of Ti-6Al-4V alloy. Pin-like specimens of the alloy were produced and subjected to sliding motion on a pin-on-disk apparatus using different speeds, loads and sliding distances. The surface and specific wear rates of the alloy were evaluated as the main output of the study. Results indicate that the most severe surface wear rate of over 0.008 mm3/sec is experienced under conditions of low disk speed (50 rpm) with high input weight (46.5 N). Higher sliding distance is also found to affect the severity of the surface wear rate. All results of specific wear rates evaluated indicate that Ti-6Al-4V alloy can be classified as a low surface wear resistance material when operated under sliding counterface.

The friction and wear characteristics of SiC whisker containing composite silicon nitride were studied. Silicon nitride powder which contains densification aids of Y2O3 and La2O3 was mixed with silicon carbide whiskers (10, 20, and 30 wt percent) and then hot-pressed at a temperature of 1800° C. Wear experiments were carried out with a ring on block type apparatus at the sliding conditions of the sliding speed of 314 mm/sec and the load of 5 N and experimental results showed that the SiC whisker had an evident effect to reduce the wear rate of silicon nitride blocks. Silicon carbide whiskers are not dispersed isotropically, but they are oriented to the direction which is perpendicular to the pressure of hot-press sintering. Therefore, wear characteristics of the composite ceramics are anisotropic. The effect of SiC whisker on wear rate of silicon nitride is larger for the surface which is perpendicular to the direction of pressure of hot-press sintering that than that for the surface which is parallel to the pressure. Although SiC whiskers have no evident effect on friction coefficient of silicon nitride at the above sliding condition, even small contents of SiC whiskers, such as 10 wt percent, reduce considerably the coefficient of friction and show similar frictional characteristics to that of monolithic silicon carbide at the lower sliding speed of 10 mm/min.

TC21 with a composition of Ti-6Al-3Mo-1.9Nb-2.2Sn-2.2Zr-1.5Cr is considered a new titanium alloy that is used in aerospace applications as a replacement for the famous Ti-6Al-4V alloy due to its high strength-to-weight ratio, high operating temperature and corrosion resistance. In this study, two different solution treatment techniques were applied on TC21 samples. Solution treatment was applied using two step heating at 1000/800 °C for 15 min each and then cooled using water quenching or air cooling to see the effect of cooling rate on microstructure as well as mechanical properties. The solution treated samples were divided into two groups; one was tested as solution treated samples without aging. While, the second group was aged at 575 °C for 4 hrs. Maximum hardness of 442 HV was observed for the water quenched and aged samples, while the minimum hardness of 340 HV was obtained for water quenched samples without aging. The lowest wear rate was obtained for water quenched and aged samples. However, the highest wear rate was reported for the samples solution treated and water quenched without aging.

In the present investigation Aluminum matrix composites (AMMCs), Al7075 Alloy as matrix metal and Al2O3/SiC particles (2-8%) with an average particulate size of 20, 50 nm as strengthened material have been processed by the stir casting method. For the counter surface wear testing, a computerized pin on a wear tester was used as EN31 (58-60 HRC) steel disc and composite pin. The wear rate for the matrix metal and composites in terms of weight loss per unit sliding distance, friction coefficient, and volume loss were achieved. The composite results show better resistance to wear than matrix metal. SEM was used to investigate the microstructural characterization of worn surfaces. Sample weight loss was calculated and the change in cumulative wear loss at a sliding distance was uniform both for metal matrix as well as for composites. The wear speed for composites was also noted to be small compared to the metal matrix. In addition, experiments have shown that, with the increasing weight fraction of Al2O3/SiC and the coefficient of friction increases with increasing sliding velocity and weight fraction of Al2O3/SiC, the wear rate reduces. The wear characteristics (wear rate, coefficient of friction and wear loss) were better than those of other composites and the matrix metal with 6wt% Al2O3/SiC composites.

Aluminum-lithium alloys have a low density and high strength to weight ratio. They are being developed for the aerospace industry. The high strength of Al-Li can be attributed to precipitation hardening. Unfortunately when aged, Al-Li aquires a low ductility and fracture toughness. The precipitate in Al-Li is part of a sequence SSSS → Al3Li → AlLi A description of the phases may be found in reference 1 . This paper is primarily concerned with the Al3Li phase. The addition of Zr to Al-Li is being explored to find the optimum in properties. Zirconium improves fracture toughness and inhibits recrystallization. This study is a comparision between two Al-Li-Zr alloys differing in Zr concentration.Al-2.99Li-0.17Zr(alloy A) and Al-2.99Li-0.67Zr (alloy B) were solutionized for one hour at 500oc followed by a water quench. The specimens were then aged at 150°C for 16 or 40 hours. The foils were punched into 3mm discs. The specimens were electropolished with a 1/3 nitric acid 2/3 methanol solution. The transmission electron microscopy was conducted on the JEM 200CX microscope.
