Rethinking creativity in journalism: Implicit theories of creativity in the Finnish magazine industry

This article explores conceptions of creativity in the media industry, specifically among professionals of journalism working in the magazine industry. It contributes to the development of the theory of creativity from a media industry perspective and produces new conceptual knowledge about creative media work. The article finds that in the magazine industry, journalistic creativity is understood as a practical and multidimensional concept that can be interpreted and applied in many different ways. The different conceptions of creativity reflect both the traditions of the journalistic profession and the challenges now faced by the media and the magazine industry. It is concluded that creative work in the magazine industry is typically goal driven, commercially minded and collaboratively oriented. Also, creative work in the magazine industry is characterized by ongoing processes of gradual reinvention. Other major creative challenges include the development of new ways of working, new media products and new commercial solutions.

This article analyses creative work in one of Europe’s largest media organizations, in which a newly formed development team was tasked with creating a new multi-platform media product. The objective of this article is to explore the dynamics of team creativity in the process of developing and managing media content innovation. To do this, this study utilizes the concept of ambidexterity for understanding multi-level tensions between the on-going media production work and innovation processes typically co-existing in media operations. The results of the analysis indicate that, due to pressures created by the routine media production, media innovations require specific focus and prioritization to succeed. This requires recognizing, balancing and managing the ambidextrous tensions between exploration and exploitation in creative media work. In addition to practical implications for management of media innovations, this study contributes to research on media innovations, particularly from the perspectives of creative work and organizational creativity.

With new media becoming the mainstay of the journalism industry, there is a change in curriculum and pedagogy in journalism education. Even with Web 2.0 becoming the main source of news dissemination, journalism educators will still be required to impart skills to the next generation on writing with clarity, organizing ideas cleanly and working efficiently as a team. The change will be in the methodology, and has to be accepted by the institution at the administrative level first. Since journalism education is required to develop a rational capacity in future graduates, and help them attain all skills essential to understand the media industry with regard to new media practices and changing trends, journalism administrators and educators have to be ably equipped with the skills, only then these can be delivered to the students. The study is about private and public (government) journalism schools in India and focuses on their willingness to adopt the requisite skill set and display adaptability towards using new media. It includes interviews conducted with administrators (who are also educators) in government and private journalism institutions in the country, concerning acceptance of new media and adoption in curriculum, instruction, evaluation and feedback, and arrives at results interpretatively.

Abstract: This paper discusses how the capitalist media industry has been structurally transformed in the age of digital communications. It takes an approach that is grounded in the Marxian critique of the political economy of the media. It draws a distinction between media capital, media-oriented capital, media infrastructure capital and media-external capital as the forms of capital in the media industry. The article identifies four capital strategies that media capital tends to use in order to try to maximise profits: a) The substitution of “old” by “new” media technology, b) the introduction of new transmission channels for “old” media products, c) the definition of new property rights for media sectors and networks, d) the reduction of production and transaction costs. The drive to profit maximization is at the heart of the capitalist media industry’s structural transformation. This work also discusses the tendency to the universalization of the media system in the digital age and the economic contradictions arising from it. It identifies activity fields of the media industry’s structural transformation and shows how the concentration of the capitalist media markets is an essential, contradictory and inherent feature of the capitalist media system and its structural transformation. The paper identifies six causes of why capital seeks to employ capital strategies that result in the media industry’s structural transformation. They include market saturation, overaccumulation, the tendency of the profit rate to fall, capital-concentration, competition pressure, and advertising. The paper finally discusses the role of the state as an agent of capital in general and media capital in particular. It discusses the role of the state in privatisations, neoliberal deregulation, the formation of national competitive states, and various benefits that the state provides for media capital. This contribution shows that capital and capitalism are the main structural transformers of the media and communications system. For understanding these transformations, we need an approach that is grounded in Marx’s critique of the political economy.Translation from German: Christian Fuchs and Marisol Sandoval

Along with the continuous progress of science and technology, in recent years, the improvement and optimization of the structure of the media and the rapid development of the network are promoting continuous changes in the media environment. New media has penetrated into people’s daily life and become an integral part of the whole social environment. As an indispensable component of the media industry, the host industry is facing challenges from many aspects in the new media environment, which requires the announcers and hosts to give full play to their subjective initiative, finding the “opportunity” in the “crisis”, keeping up with the pace of the times, embracing the emerging media, and grasping the needs of the audience, to produce high-quality content, so as to transform “crisis” into “opportunity”.

This article discusses Indonesian artist Krisna Murti, whose video art and other creative work can be seen as a form of televisual metadiscourse. Murti’s artistic type of televisual metadiscourse provides insight into the commercial and ideological mechanisms behind the mass media industry; the cultural-technological features of various media; the historical dimensions of different genres of representation; the position of the artist and audience in processes of mediation; and alternative forms of intermediality and interactivity. Beyond merely television critique, Murti’s work presents an alternative vision of mixed environments where media and people harmoniously coexist and interact with each other. The author argues that this attempt at promoting pleasant, effective and sustainable communication environments could be seen as the media equivalent of ecology.

The development of communication and information technology that gave birth to the digital era has made the competition for the mass media industry increasingly competitive. This condition requires conventional mass media, especially local newspapers to carry out special strategies focused on efforts to transform their activities in accordance with the demands of the times, so as not to get further behind with new media that use the internet and digital technology. The Daily OKU Ekspres and OKU Timur Pos, as conventional local newspapers, are confronted with this reality. Surrender or immediately develop a strategy for transformation and change, in order to remain able to compete in the media industry. This study uses a qualitative method, where data analysis is displayed descriptively. The results showed that the two newspapers systematically implemented four strategies to face competition with online media, namely; strengthen local content with investigative reports, media convergence, penetration in social media networks and carry out regular and incidental off-air activities. In the context of this strategy choice, the two newspapers are able to capitalize on the vulnerability of online media to strengthen their existence.

Internet is an ideal environment for emergence and popularization of the concept of free sources. Our analysis of this concept and the assessment of its impact on the media sphere confirmed clearly that the sphere of mass communication under the influence of globalization and the rapid evolution of information technologies is looking for the new models of activities of the media in order to keep its dominant position and influence in the structure of the modern information environment. The concept of free sources has a significant impact on the media sphere and promotes the realization of the need to change the approach to new media. At the same time the most radical interpretations of the concept, such as the idea of free media content, were not supported by the media industry.

The article explores work organization in one new media company in a turning point of the business, in the 2000s. The company had changed from a small workshop to a medium-sized company in a few years. Growth, increasing competition, and uncertainty of profitability had altered the management and work organization. An approach of governance, aimed at efficiency and economy, was systematically implemented; the working methods were standardized, strict division of labor was carried out, and the professional qualifications were mainstreamed according to the business. The professional employees appreciated the new business-like management, but discovered that their opportunities for creative work were diminished with decreasing resources and a new project management pattern.

With the rapid development of various media forms in modern society and the rise of various means of communication, the media pattern has already had dramatic changes. Increasingly convenient means of communication have brought a large amount of information for the mass public and the society. To help the public better analyze the current situation and trends in the media industry, we have proposed different rating systems for different segments of the media industry, and then we give each system corresponding emphasis and calculate its assessment index, and finally use the ranking list to present an objective analysis of the results. A set of precise rating system has been established based on the method of fuzzy mathematics and analytical hierarchy process in this paper. The target field of broadcasting and television is ranked accurately according to the ranking system combined with the advice of the senior in the media industry and researcher. The result of the ranking can make a reference to the current situation and trend of broadcasting and television industry and make a long-term guide for future planning and development of the industry.

This chapter analyzes the politics of media in Turkey and the formation of Turkey’s so-called new media order characterized by polarization, corporatization, widespread censorship, and lack of journalistic independence. It argues that Turkey’s ongoing media crisis arose due to structural transformations starting from the early 1980s and becoming more accelerated and visible under the rule of the Justice and Development Party (AKP). The chapter discusses Turkey’s media crisis in three steps. Firstly, it contextualizes Turkey’s traditional media system within globally recognized media systems and provides a historical understanding of the impact of political elites and the government on the media industry. Secondly, it discusses shifts in media consumption habits and media ownership structure under AKP rule and shows how these shifts served the party’s political agenda. Finally, it offers a critical overview of several existing prescriptive approaches to Turkey’s media crisis and argues that techno-determinist and overgeneralizing approaches are incompatible with Turkey’s social reality.
