This article contributes to sociological and new materialist efforts to reorient and reimagine qualitative methodologies. I explore the more-than-human and more-than-representational potentials of one traditional humanist qualitative method, photovoice and its ‘affordances’ when the epistemologies and ontologies underpinning what images ‘can do’ are opened up. I extend the work of Higgins (2014; 2016) and others who have ‘recalibrated’ visual methods to argue that photovoice has the potential to be an aleatory methodological practice which connects to efforts to mobilise ethics of encounter in feminist new materialist research. I draw on two empirical examples from a study which used photovoice as a key tool to explore young people’s embodiment and wellbeing as emergent traces, formed through entangled processes and relations, rather than inherent properties of human bodies and subjects. The article explores what photovoice ‘can do’ and how it may be useful in contributing to sociological efforts to generate new answers to old questions through attending to the ways structures and material inequalities are themselves produced through the situated and affective practices and embodiments of everyday life.

The objective of this research was to find out the symbol and theme that was used by Robert Frost in his literary works. It was also to elaborate on his biographical aspect of using symbols and themes in his poem. The method used to make this paper was a qualitative method. The writer also used two approaches to analyze this paper; first, the intrinsic approach consists of the symbol and theme and second, the extrinsic approach is a biographical perspective. The data were collected through library research. The results of this research indicated that the symbol on “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening” was related to his nature or everyday life, while the theme on “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening” was about the journey. The last, Robert Frost wrote his poem based on his experience of life when he was a teenager.

Despite promotion of evidence-based policy responses, there remains a knowledge gap between policy-makers and academia particularly in transport policy making, which is steeped in positivist traditions. A number of social policy academics have conceptualised research utilisation in relation to particular elements of social policy, but less attention has been paid to the integration of deliberative and interpretative research into transport policy. This article explores this through a study of the journey to school that used mobile and visual methods in an in-depth exploration of this element of everyday life.

Promoting older people's ability to manage at home is important both for themselves and for society, but few studies have explored whether geriatric rehabilitation actually meets the needs of this heterogeneous group. The purpose of this study was to investigate the meanings that older adults attribute to their geriatric rehabilitation experiences. A group of 27 older adults in inpatient rehabilitation were interviewed during the programme and after returning home. Semi-structured interviews were analysed using a qualitative method, which identified three categories of meaning. In the category ‘sense of confidence with everyday life’, rehabilitation was perceived as facilitating everyday living at home; in the category ‘sense of vacation’, rehabilitation was seen as a means of getting away from normal life and enjoying oneself; and in the category ‘sense of disappointment in the rehabilitation programme’, the participants expressed frustration with the limited opportunities to participate in the planning of their rehabilitation, and with the mismatch between the offered programme and what was needed. To promote older people's autonomy and to enhance their ability to live at home, professionals must involve their clients to a greater extent in the planning of the rehabilitation than is currently the case, and also individualise the rehabilitation regimen.
