“Tune in to the Affirmative”: The Family Channel and the Politics of Positive Programming

The Family Channel, which evolved out of Pat Robertson’s Christian Broadcasting Network, created a new brand of family television and redefined the “family audience” in the 1990s. The channel capitalized on the vacuum produced by the major networks’ pursuit of advertiser-friendly demographics, and created a safe space for traditional family television viewing. By promoting “positivity” as its brand and relying on the nostalgic appeal of older television properties, the Family Channel became the first cable channel to build a “values-based” brand and audience. The Family Channel normalized an ideologically conservative model of commercial family television in an expanding cable landscape, and capitalized on social conservatives’ discontent with mainstream television content. This article analyzes the branding, programming, and public-facing statements of the channel’s executives to reveal how the Family Channel implicitly and explicitly connected this new “family audience” with the ideology and politics of social conservatism.

ABSTRACTDescriptive study, update, aiming to identify the family social changes, the family and its life cycle, rebuilding the family, in your new life cycle to identify the importance of family therapy, this process of re-marriage. This is an issue of timeliness, increasingly frequent, though little discussed in the academic world. In the traditional family, where the couple and children living and paternalism commands, is no longer the only model of relations between people. With this process of change biopsychosocial, economic, the difficulties faced by families have become increasingly constant and conflicting. The family groups disrupted and restructured created new family structures where these new relationships and new roles are more complex than in the traditional family model. The difficulties encountered by families restructured are different, if the assumption that there is a link parent/son before the marriage. In the first marriage, the couple goes through the process of adaptation and creates a bond before dealing with their children, which does not occur in the family rebuilt. Moreover, previous marital experiences can influence poorly resolved in this new reconstruction marriage. Trata-se de uma temática da contemporaneidade, cada vez mais freqüente, embora pouco discutido no mundo acadêmico. Na família tradicional, na qual o casal e filhos vivem e o paternalismo comanda, deixou de ser o único modelo de inter-relações. Com esse processo de mudança biopsicossocial, econômico, as dificuldades enfrentadas pelas famílias também se tornaram cada vez mais constantes e conflituosas. Os núcleos familiares desfeitos e refeitos criaram novas estruturas familiares onde estão presentes novos relacionamentos e os novos papéis mais complexos do que no modelo de família tradicional. As dificuldades encontradas pelas famílias reconstruídas são diferentes, se partimos do princípio que existe um vínculo progenitor/filho que antecede o vínculo conjugal. No primeiro casamento, o casal passa pela fase de adaptação e cria um vínculo antes de lidar com os filhos, o que não ocorre na família reconstruída. Além disso, experiências conjugais anteriores mal resolvidas podem influenciar nesta nova reconstrução conjugal. Se trata de una cuestión de oportunidad, cada vez más frecuentes, aunque poco debatido en el mundo académico. En la familia tradicional, donde la pareja y los niños que viven y el paternalismo comandos, ya no es el único modelo de las relaciones entre las personas. Con este proceso de cambio biopsicosocial, económicas, las dificultades que enfrentan las familias se han convertido en constante y cada vez más conflictiva. Los grupos familiares perturbadas y reestructurado creado nuevas estructuras familiares que son estas nuevas relaciones y nuevas funciones más complejas que en el modelo de familia tradicional. Las dificultades encontradas por las familias reestructuradas son hijo antes del-diferentes, si la hipótesis de que existe un vínculo padre/hijo. En el primer matrimonio, la pareja pasa por el proceso de adaptación y crea un bono antes de hacer frente a sus hijos, lo que no ocurre en la familia reconstruida. Por otra parte, las experiencias matrimoniales anteriores pueden influir en mal resueltas en esta nueva reconstrucción del matrimonio. Resuming published and own data, a revision of classification of Chaetognatha is presented. The family Sagittidae Claus & Grobben, 1905 is given a rank of subclass, Sagittiones, characterised, in particular, by the presence of two pairs of sac-like gelatinous structures or two pairs of fins. Besides the order Aphragmophora Tokioka, 1965, it contains the new order Biphragmosagittiformes ord. nov., which is a unique group of Chaetognatha with an unusual combination of morphological characters: the transverse muscles present in both the trunk and the tail sections of the body; the seminal vesicles simple, without internal complex compartments; the presence of two pairs of lateral fins. The only family assigned to the new order, Biphragmosagittidae fam. nov., contains two genera. Diagnoses of the two new genera, Biphragmosagitta gen. nov. (type species B. tarasovi sp. nov. and B. angusticephala sp. nov.) and Biphragmofastigata gen. nov. (type species B. fastigata sp. nov.), detailed descriptions and pictures of the three new species are presented.

This study investigated the effect of patent value on the renewal (survival) of patents. The private value of patents can be one of the main pillars sustaining a firm’s value, and the estimation of the value may contribute to the strategic management of firms. The current study aimed to confirm the recent research findings with survival analysis, focusing on the more homogeneous patent data samples. In this study, a dataset is constructed from a cohort of 6646 patents from the 1996 and 1997 application years, using patent data from the European Patent Office (EPO). We found that the family size and non-patent backward citations exhibited profound impacts on patent survival. This result is in line with numerous studies, indicating the positive impact of science linkages in the biotechnology and pharmaceutical fields. It was also found that the effect of the ex-post indicator is not as strong as the ex-ante indicators, like traditional family size and backward citations. In short, the family size matters most for the survival of patents, according to the current research.

The horseshoe crab Limulus polyphemus (Linnaeus, 1758) is a famous species, renowned as a ‘living fossil’ (Owen, 1873; Barthel, 1974; Kin and Błażejowski, 2014) for its apparently little-changed morphology for many millions of years. The genus Limulus Müller, 1785 was used by Leach (1819, p. 536) as the basis of a new family Limulidae and synonymized it with Polyphemus Lamarck, 1801 (Lamarck's proposed but later unaccepted replacement for Limulus, as discussed by Van der Hoeven, 1838, p. 8) and Xyphotheca Gronovius, 1764 (later changed to Xiphosura Gronovius, 1764, another junior synonym of Limulus). He also included the valid modern genus Tachypleus Leach, 1819 in the family. The primary authority of Leach (1819) is widely recognized in the neontological literature (e.g., Dunlop et al., 2012; Smith et al., 2017). It is also the authority recognized in the World Register of Marine Species (WoRMS Editorial Board, 2021).

AbstractThe article discusses the image of the family and the family home in a series of novels for young people by the popular Polish writer Małgorzata Musierowicz in the context of literary conventions and stereotypes about the family in contemporary Polish society. The novels, which cover a period of over 40 years, generally fit contemporary Polish realities; however, the didactic function of the novels results in the author creating an idealized image of the Polish intellectual family, filling the readers with optimism. The picture created by the writer, on the one hand, fits perfectly into the stereotype of the family, which is one of the values highly esteemed by Poles. On the other hand, it adapts to the conventions of novels for girls. In this article, the stereotype of the family is reconstructed on the basis of language data and surveys. We present the meanings and contexts of family as a noun and family as an adjective. We also present the results of our survey, the aim of which was to determine an essence of a stereotypical family and how the traditional family model is comprehended by respondents coming from various groups. We also present the respondents’ attitude to the patriarchal family model and the division of roles into male and female. In our opinion, the correspondence between the family picture created in the novels and the image of the family operating in social consciousness is the reason for the popularity of the series.

Concepts of the family Hyolithidae Nicholson fide Fisher and the genera Hyolithes Eichwald and Orthotheca Novak have been expanded through time to encompass a variety of morphologically dissimilar shells. The Hyolithidae is here considered to include only those hyolithid species which have a rounded (convex) dorsum; slopes on the dorsum are inflated, and the venter may be flat or slightly inflated. Hyolithes encompasses species which possess a low dorsum and a prominent longitudinal sulcus along each edge of the dorsum; the ligula is short and the apertural rim is flared. The emended concept of Orthotheca includes only those species of orthothecid hyoliths which have a subtriangular transverse outline and longitudinal lirae covering the shell on both dorsum and venter.Eighteen species of Hyolithes and one species of Orthotheca from the Appalachian region and Western Interior were reexamined in light of more modern taxonomic concepts and standards of quality for type material. Reexamination of type specimens of H. similis Walcott from the Lower Cambrian of Newfoundland, H. whitei Resser from the Lower Cambrian of Nevada, H. billingsi Walcott from the Lower Cambrian of Nevada, H. gallatinensis Resser from the Upper Cambrian of Wyoming, and H. partitus Resser from the Middle Cambrian of Alabama indicates that none of these species represents Hyolithes. Hyolithes similis is here included under the new genus Similotheca, in the new family Similothecidae. Hyolithes whitei is designated as the type species of the new genus Nevadotheca, to which H. billingsi may also belong. Hyolithes gallatinensis is referred to Burithes Missarzhevsky with question, and H. partitus may represent Joachimilites Marek. The type or types of H. attenuatus Walcott, H. cecrops Walcott, H. comptus Howell, H. cowanensis Resser, H. curticei Resser, H. idahoensis Resser, H. prolixus Resser, H. resseri Howell, H. shaleri Walcott, H. terranovicus Walcott, and H. wanneri Resser and Howell lack shells and/or other taxonomically important features such as a complete aperture, rendering the diagnoses of these species incomplete. Their names should only be used for the type specimens until better preserved topotypes become available for study. Morphology of the types of H.? corrugatus Walcott and “Orthotheca” sola Resser does not support placement in the Hyolitha; the affinities of these species are uncertain.

AbstractThe glutamyl endopeptidase family of enzymes from staphylococci has been shown to be important virulence determinants of pathogenic family members, such asStaphylococcus aureus. Previous studies have identified the N-terminus and residues from positions 185–195 as potentially important regions that determine the activity of three members of the family. Cloning and sequencing of the new family members fromStaphylococcus caprae(GluScpr) andStaphylococcus cohnii(GluScoh) revealed that the N-terminal Val residue is maintained in all family members. Mutants of the GluV8 enzyme fromS. aureuswith altered N-terminal residues, including amino acids with similar properties, were inactive, indicating that the Val residue is specifically required at the N-terminus of this enzyme family in order for them to function correctly. Recombinant GluScpr was found to have peptidase activity intermediate between GluV8 and GluSE fromStaphylococcus epidermisand to be somewhat less specific in its substrate requirements than other family members. The 185–195 region was found to contribute to the activity of GluScpr, although other regions of the enzyme must also play a role in defining the activity. Our results strongly indicate the importance of the N-terminal and the 185–195 region in the activity of the glutamyl endopeptidases of staphylococci.

Television viewing is a popular activity for children throughout the Western nations and in many developing countries. Although little is known about the functions of viewing, considerable evidence indicates that televised models of social behavior influences viewers' post-viewing actions. Recent advances in research on behavioral effects include field experiments and panel studies that permit use of nonexperimental causal-inference techniques. In addition, the scope of recent research has expanded to include other types of effects (e.g., children's concepts of social reality) and cognitive processing of televised information. Directions for the future include the need to (1) examine further developmental aspects of response to typical television programming and (2) study the interaction of television content with children's common contexts and experiences.

AbstractNematodes are one of the most abundant groups of invertebrates on the face of the earth. Their extremely poor fossil record hinders our ability to assess just when members of this group invaded land and first became associated with plants. This study reports fossil nematodes from the stomatal chambers of the Early Devonian (396 mya) land plant, Aglaophyton major. These nematodes, which are tentatively assigned to the order Enoplia, are described as Palaeonema phyticum gen. n., sp. n. in the new family Palaeonematidae fam. n. Diagnostic characters of the family are: i) cuticular striations; ii) uniform, cylindrical pharynx with the terminal portion only slightly set off from the remainder; and iii) a two-portioned buccal cavity with the upper portion bearing protuberances. The presence of eggs, juveniles and adults in family clusters within the plant tissues provide the earliest evidence of an association between terrestrial plants and animals and may represent an early stage in the evolution of plant parasitism by nematodes.

Six genera of the order Pleosporales are revised taxonomically. Although five genera have unusual applanate ascospores, they are members of three different families. Clathrospora (10 species, 2 new), Comoclathris (21 species, 7 new), and Macrospora (3 species) are placed in a new family Diademaceae in which the ascoma opening is a characteristic flat circular lid. Diademosa, a new genus with one species with terete ascospores is placed in Diademaceae. Graphyllium (3 species) is placed in the family Hysteriaceae characterized by hysterothecia with a slit-like opening. Platysporoides n.gen. (11 species, 1 new) is maintained in the Pleosporaceae because of the terete pored beak of the ascomata. Key words: Pleosporales, applanate ascospores, Clathrospora, Comoclathris, Macrospora, Diademosa, Graphyllium, Platysporoides.
