Two focus groups were conducted with special needs teachers to: (a) identify barriers to learning for autistic pupils, (b) consider broad assessment domains and specific skills or behaviours which teachers consider important for these pupils, and (c) give their opinions on teacher assessments. Data analysis resulted in six main themes: (a) barriers to learning, (b) teacher priorities for autistic pupils, (c) ways of overcoming barriers, (d) the concept of ‘true mastery’, (e) assessing the bigger picture, and (f) practicalities of assessment. Results showed that teachers have priorities for the pupils they know well and concerns about the assessments they regularly use. To ensure face and content validity of teacher assessments, and for assessments to be useful to and valued by the teachers who use them, it is recommended that teachers have opportunities to input during various aspects of the assessment development process.

Palavras-chave: mediação; conflito; matriz espaço-tempo; história Abstract Dichotomous switching of the history of science between the individual and the social gender have hampered its implementation in teaching. The set of empirical information collected in the process of investigation, still under way, conducted through focus groups and based on combination of phenomenology with grounded theory, enabled us to identify conflict dynamics at different stages of transitions, involving the school and the world of work, of 66 individuals in the region of Porto. The reinterpretation of the empirical information led us to place the development process of the history of science, alongside the process of mediation of conflicts. The transposed mediation of conflicts that generated the development of knowledge can contribute to the implementation of the history of science in teaching. Keywords: mediation; conflict; space-time matrix; history

This study sought to analyze how the process of language development differed between a group of monolingual and bilingual children with autism spectrum disorders (n = 201) who were aged between 5-8 years and hailed from different countries around the world. To achieve this objective, a self-designed five-point Likert scale covering six different language domains was developed to measure the level of difficulty experienced by the participants. The measurement of the level of these difficulties was conducted based on reliable statistical analysis methods. The participants in the two groups were then compared on the basis of these difficulties. No statistically significant differences between the two groups were observed in any language domain. While mild differences within the items of main domains were indeed observed, they were deemed to be statistically non-significant. The results of this study suggest that both monolingualism and bilingualism do not have any detrimental effects on the language development abilities of children with autism spectrum disorders. Both groups were observed to experience the same level of difficulty in their language development process. This study’s limitations, implications, and other research suggestions have been discussed in detail as well.

Abstract Background Parents of children with developmental disabilities (DD) including autism spectrum disorder (ASD) or behavioural conditions can be reluctant to inform the medical team of their child’s diagnosis during a visit to the pediatric Emergency Department (PED). Knowing the child’s sensitivities and needs, however, could make it easier for the healthcare team to provide the best possible care. A one-page tool, “This is My Child”, was developed to bridge this gap. Objectives Evaluate the ease of use, benefit to child’s care, and overall acceptance of “This is My Child” from parental and health provider perspectives. Design/Methods “This is My Child” was modified from an inpatient tool which helped communication between staff and children with ASD and their families. Developed with input from PED healthcare providers, the tool entailed ten questions pertinent to children who have communication and sensory processing challenges, as well as a prompt for additional comments. Families were recruited in the waiting room, and the study was open to all who were willing to participate. The completed tool was attached to the front of the ED chart prior to the child being seen. At the end of the ED visit, parents and treating healthcare providers completed a questionnaire evaluating the tool. Recruitment was deemed complete once 30 children with a prior diagnosis of a developmental/behavioural condition had been enrolled. Following analysis of the questionnaires, focus groups were held with participating ED healthcare providers. Results Of 336 study participants recruited, 199 parents, 225 physicians and 135 nurses returned questionnaires. The large majority of parents, physicians and nurses indicated ‘Strongly or Somewhat Agreed’ that the tool was easy to understand. However, only 18% of physicians and 29% of nurses, yet 76% of parents, felt that the tool should be used for all children seen in the PED. This discrepancy between health care team and parental opinion was explored in the focus groups. Healthcare providers noted that the tool was beneficial in cases where unique developmental needs were reported. Concern was raised given the tool’s perceived lack of relevance for children without special needs, as well as additional staff work for tool utilization. Conclusion This easy to use form was welcomed by families, but less so by physicians. Work is ongoing to integrate these perspectives.

The software systems that millions of users use everyday around the world are mainly targeted at the main and the largest average group of people - people without disabilities. However, software systems are often inaccessible and unusable for another group of people - people with congenital or acquired disabilities. For a system to be accessible to people with special needs, it must be designed to take account of and be geared to their specific needs, opportunities for using the software systems and the hardware that provides them. This paper presents a model for creating a software system (for a physiological data analysis) that takes into account the needs of people with disabilities and in particular people with visual deficits. This model will ensure the assibilites of the software system and its easy use by both this target group and people without disabilities.

BACKGROUND Despite the potential value of assistive technology to support people with dementia (PWD) in everyday activities, use of these technologies is still limited. To ensure that assistive technologies better address the specific needs and daily context of PWD and their informal caregivers, it is particularly important to involve them in all different phases of assistive technology development. The literature rarely describes the involvement of PWD throughout the development process of assistive technologies, which makes it difficult to further reflect on and improve active involvement of PWD. OBJECTIVE This two-part study aimed to gather insights on the user-centered design (UCD) applied in the development process of the alpha prototype of the serious game PLAYTIME by describing the methods and procedures of the UCD as well as evaluating the UCD from the perspective of all involved stakeholders. METHODS The first three phases of the user-driven Living Lab of Innovate Dementia 2.0 were applied to directly involve PWD and their informal caregivers through qualitative research methods, including focus groups and a context-field study, in the development of the alpha prototype of PLAYTIME from exploration to design to testing. After the testing phase, a total number of 18 semi-structured interviews were conducted with PWD, their informal caregivers and the project members of PLAYTIME to evaluate the applied UCD from the perspective of all involved stakeholders. The interviews addressed five of the principles for successful UCD and the appropriateness of the different methods used in the focus groups and context-field study. RESULTS Results of the interviews focused, amongst others, on the level of involvement of PWD and their informal caregivers in the development process, the input provided by PWD and their informal caregivers, the value of early prototyping, continuous iterations of design solutions and in-context testing, the role of dementia care professionals in the multidisciplinary project team, and the appropriateness of open- and closed-ended questions for obtaining input from PWD and their informal caregivers. CONCLUSIONS The description and evaluation of the UCD applied in the development process of the alpha prototype of PLAYTIME resulted in several insights on the relevance of UCD for all involved stakeholders as well as how PWD can be involved in the subsequent phases of usable and meaningful assistive technology development.

The educational journey in postgraduate programs is linked to the actors, processes and results, setting the tone for different approaches from the perspective of characterization, development and evaluation. It is summarized in a sequential manner in four stages: entry to the program, progress within the program, and the final educational stretch, where the instructor/tutor plays an important part and obtaining the diploma or degree. The goal of this research was to evaluate, using the students’ perceptions, formative experiences as a result of their academic journey in postgraduate programs within education in Northern Mexico. We have used a case study based on the focus groups technique, applied to a sample of cases comprised of students enrolled in their final educational stage. The information was analyzed using inductive data analysis. The main results were grouped into three meta categories: (1) development of professional skills for the successful design of the intervention proposal, which unfolded into four categories; (2) the role of the tutor during the formative process, consisting of four analysis categories and (3) contributions of the teaching staff in their profession, consisting of two categories. These trends also evidence the formative abundance in the personal, academic and social training context of the students.

This meta-analysis aimed to analyze the oral health inequalities among special needs children during 2004–2019 in Asia to reveal the importance and the needs of establishing integrated and equitable special needs dentistry care system in Indonesia. PubMed, Scopus, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, and Wiley Online Library were systematically searched for full-text observational studies published from 1 January 2004 to 15 January 2020, in English in Asia. Studies that included children under 18 years of age with special needs and compared them to healthy controls were selected. Study quality was assessed using the Joanna Briggs Institute 2017 Critical Appraisal Checklist. Risk of bias was assessed using the ROBINS-E tool. The decayed, missing, and filled permanent teeth (DMFT) index indicated that special needs children who suffer from intellectual disability or autism spectrum disorder had significantly more caries than normal children (p < 0.001). The special needs children who had more caries than normal children lived in countries that had a high average DMFT value among 12 years old children (p < 0.001), and these two variables showed a positive correlation in meta-regression analysis (p < 0.001). Having an integrated and equitable care system and elevating children’s oral health are important to maintain special needs children’s oral health.
