The principal focus of this article is to provide an analysis of some of the most significant works by the independent filmmaker Patrick Bokanowski and the methodology he uses to create those animated films. It addresses Bokanowski’s technique of filming on various kinds of reflective surfaces as a strategy for transforming the image through optical deformation and thereby expressing his subjective vision in films and animation. He explores the practical application of creating reverberation as visual echoes, as well as the use of unusual reflections that appear in mirrors and other more unstable reflective surfaces, such as liquid mercury, and the refraction occurring in sculpted lenses, glass or water. The aim of this strategy is the pure expression of subjective experience, with the director using a camera as if it were an entirely free-moving paintbrush that inspires creativity and breaks loose from automatic camera movements. Accordingly, this study examines the dynamic, expressive potential of the language of catoptrics, taking as paradigmatic examples two of Bokanowski’s short films: La Plage (1992) and Au bord du lac (1994). The authors’ analyses of these films are aimed at demonstrating how the artist manages to bring about qualitative, transformative changes of forms and space by reflecting images on mirrors, ripples in mercury and movements of water, and by combining these elements. The system developed by Bokanowski successfully transports us to an ever-changing, poetic universe and breaks new ground in the field of animation.

This chapter moves forward by unpacking the generic identity of computer-animated films and examines the journey narrative structure as their prevailing syntax and first line of action. In this chapter, two forms of narrative are established that are widely operational within the genre. The first of these are the “flushed away” narratives that rely upon on abrupt geographical disjuncture, and which often requires the protagonist to negotiate and quickly adapt to a foreign milieu. The second journey narrative form advanced in this chapter is the “over the hedge” narrative, which are voyages signalled as altogether more prepared or expected. This chapter explores in detail how computer-animated films deploy these two forms of journey narrative structure to interrogate ideas of mobility, location, destination and tourism through the virtual experiences they offer of travelled space. Chapter Two concludes by positioning the journey narrative within the context of film franchising and the “sequelled” narrative. Computer-animated films rarely exists in isolation, but are supported by a range of sequels, spin-offs and short films. This chapter identifies how narrative structure can be productively entwined with the wider role of film series and cycles that continues to define the franchise mentality of post-millennial Hollywood cinema.

The hemiplegic rehabilitation state diagnosing performed by therapists can be biased due to their subjective experience, which may deteriorate the rehabilitation effect. In order to improve this situation, a quantitative evaluation is proposed. Though many motion analysis systems are available, they are too complicated for practical application by therapists. In this paper, a method for detecting the motion of human lower limbs including all degrees of freedom (DOFs) via the inertial sensors is proposed, which permits analyzing the patient’s motion ability. This method is applicable to arbitrary walking directions and tracks of persons under study, and its results are unbiased, as compared to therapist qualitative estimations. Using the simplified mathematical model of a human body, the rotation angles for each lower limb joint are calculated from the input signals acquired by the inertial sensors. Finally, the rotation angle versus joint displacement curves are constructed, and the estimated values of joint motion angle and motion ability are obtained. The experimental verification of the proposed motion detection and analysis method was performed, which proved that it can efficiently detect the differences between motion behaviors of disabled and healthy persons and provide a reliable quantitative evaluation of the rehabilitation state.

Self-transcendence is a concept often evoked in different approaches to meaningful work, but which lacks clarity. This chapter considers how the subjective experience of meaningful work, centering on significance and purpose, gives rise to the idea of meaningfulness as the realization of human potential, by connecting the inner and the outer life along spiritual and social dimensions. It points to a conceptualization of self-transcendence that places greater emphasis on the intersubjective nature of meaningfulness. This raises questions such as: if meaningfulness is self-transcendent, where and how is meaning created? If transcendence denotes “beyondness” of the here and now, what does this mean in terms of the nature of work tasks and roles? If self-transcendence is an ineffable, transitory state, what might this mean for research into meaningful work? A shift in the emphasis of future research is necessary if we are to understand the self-transcendent nature of experienced meaningfulness.

In this study, the Soviet animation cinema's ideological discourses, which showed the consequences and reflections of the political ideology of the era, were examined. In line with the findings, it was considered that these animated films constitute a kind of cultural memory that exhibits the political history and social culture of the Soviets. The article's ideological discourse analysis method was applied by considering Teun A. van Dijk's study titled Ideological Discourse Analysis. As part of this research, because ideological discourses were analyzed, only short films with propaganda content were regarded among Soviet animations, and the scope of the study was restricted. Furthermore, the date range taken about the films was the term of Soyuzmultfilm, the official animation studio of the Soviet Union. The films created by the studio, which began its actions in 1936 until the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991, were taken into account. The conclusions of discourse analysis were evaluated according to the headings 'self-identity', 'activity', 'goal', 'norm and value', 'position and relation' and 'resource' mentioned in the article Ideological Discourse Analysis, and the ideological discourses in Soviet animated cinema were analyzed.

ERIC KHOO was born in 1965 to a well-to-do family in Singapore. According to Khoo, his mother started taking him to the movies at the age of two, developing in him a love for the cinema (delete sentence- repeated in main text). According to Khoo, when he was about eight years old, he (chanced upon) his mother's Super 8 camera, started making "little animated films" on it and has since been unable to put his camera down. Khoo's interest led him to study cinematography at the City Art Institute in Sydney, Australia. Back in Singapore, he began making award-winning short films before venturing into feature film-making. In 1990, Khoo's animated short film, Barbie Digs Joe, won five awards at the Singapore Video Competition and became the first Singapore short film to travel to film festivals abroad. His next short, August (1991) won the Best Singapore Short Film at...

The process of design and validation of the content and structure of a tool for the analysis of gender stereotypes applicable to feature films, short films, and television series, both realistic and cartoonish, is presented. The model is called EG_5x4 and consists of five dimensions (corporal, attitudinal, social, affective-sexual, and audiovisual), being novel because of its distribution into four pairs of items per category. The methodological process began with the writing, based on previous instruments on gender stereotypes, of a draft of the items, which were distributed in dimensions and organized in pairs to be able to independently relate each statement to the male and/or female gender. This draft was evaluated by 35 experts (inter-judge validation). The global results of this phase determined the objective validity of the construct (CVI of 0.709 points). The qualitative contributions were considered, and the final writing and design of the instrument was reviewed, being applied to the analysis of 23 animated films. The coincidence in the items (analyzed separately by two researchers) and the wealth of nuances in the results led to the conclusion that the EG_5x4 instrument is valid and reliable for analysis of gender stereotypes in the audiovisual field.

Educational animation is an animated product produced specifically for the purpose of learning. Its popularity in helping students understand and remember information presented increased since the advent of computer graphics technology. The lack of an increase in the production of animated short films in Indonesia resulted in at least encountered the works of domestically-made animation education. Stimulation of creation of animated works based on the local culture should be a concern for creators to produce Indonesian animated film. This has encouraged the idea of research and the creation of the works to add alternative work spectacle for children to be more varied. The work produced will be expected to become one of the benchmarks for the creators of short animated films in Indonesia. The short animated film themed character education and have the characterization and design characteristics based on local wisdom is still a little bit. Production work is still dominated by elements that showed the humorous aspects of violence as like a common thing to do. Against all the odds, and within a highly restrictive production context, women have been and continue to be the most politically engaged filmmakers in Syria. While feature‐length fiction films by women are rare or non‐existent, documentary maker Halla Alabdallah is working across different genres with obvious degrees of resistance. Trained by Omar Amiralay (Syria’s foremost documentary maker), her style is singular and experimental in nature. Her first film, I am the One Who Brings Flowers to her Grave (2006) was the first documentary made by a woman in Syria. It is a lyrical portrait of solidarity between women across the ages that experiments with ‘representation’. In As if We Were Catching a Cobra (2012) she looks at the art of cartoon and other politically inspired art forms, in Egypt and Syria, immediately before the start of the revolution in Cairo. She uses documentary as a weapon, she says, because it is necessary to negotiate the oppression and taboos in order to find an avenue for self-expression and dissidence. Women’s identity struggle and self-expression are addressed directly in her films, and there is an immense trust in her global spectators’ ability to empathise, as vocal and aural communication methods are explicitly used to express dissent.

Statement of the problem and purpose of the article. In the concept of teaching psychology at school as a discipline, we develop and analyze the previously developed theory of auto-psychological competence in its practical application: as an opportunity to develop competence in relation to oneself at school age. One of the main concepts and psychological means of development is self-coaching as a form of auto-communication. In this regard, we will present a number of theoretical reflections on the topic of internal dialogue. The research methodology is based on the theory of activity by A. N. Leontiev, as well as on the analysis and generalization of research works by international and Russian scientists on the problems of personal development. Research results. The universal psychological actions of self-coaching highlighted in the proposed concept are an attempt to test a set of specific psychological methods, techniques, operations aimed at solving psychological problems of self-understanding, self-evaluation, and self-correction in the course of teaching psychology at school. The means of forming effective reflexive mechanisms (self-awareness) is auto-communication coaching (self-coaching), which is based on the ability to formulate questions to yourself in relation to significant psychological manifestations. Conclusion. Teaching psychology at school (a system of psychological knowledge and skills mastered by a student using psychological self-coaching technologies) is considered as a psychological means of forming a reflexive, arbitrary form of self-consciousness. The developed training program provides a student with a system of psychological concepts that contribute to the generalization and awareness of the subjective experience of his self-feelings, reflections and experiences.
