Background. There is increasing interest in brief, online training in mind-body skills to improve resilience in health professionals. Methods. We analyzed data from an online training program in focused attention meditation. Resilience, relaxation, stress, positive and negative affect, and flourishing were measured before and after training using standardized scales. Results. The 379 participants included nurses (31%), physicians (21%), social workers and psychologists (10%), and others (38%). At baseline, participants reported high levels of stress (mean 16.7 compared with population norms of 12-14). Completing modules was associated with small but significant improvements in relaxation, resilience, stress, positive and negative affect, and flourishing ( P <. 01 for all) Conclusion. Online focused attention meditation training reaches diverse health professionals and is associated with improvements in relaxation, resilience, stress, affect, and flourishing. Additional research is warranted to compare the long-term cost-effectiveness of different amounts and types of mind-body training on clinician burnout and quality of care.

Background: There is an increasing body of research supporting the idea that cardiac interoceptive accuracy (IAc) can be improved by training. Findings concerning the effects of a single yoga session on IAc and the related construct emotional experience are sparse. The aim of this study was to examine if a single yoga session increases IAc and improves emotional experience. Methods: 137 students were randomly assigned to a 20-min yoga session (n = 47), an endurance session (n = 46), or an inactive control condition (n = 44). IAc and emotional experience were assessed before and after the sessions. Results: There were no significant changes in IAc, or positive and negative affect. IAc at baseline and the change in positive effect were found as predictors for IAc after the yoga session. Conclusion: A 20-min yoga session seems to be not applicable to improve IAc and emotional experience. Future studies should investigate long-term interventions and diverse healthy and clinical populations.

Background. Online training is feasible, but the impact of brief mindfulness training on health professionals needs to be better understood. Methods. We analyzed data from health professionals and trainees who completed self-reflection exercises embedded in online mindfulness training between May 2014 and September, 2015; their changes in mindfulness were measured using standardized scales. Results. Participants included nurses (34%), physicians (24%), social workers and psychologists (10%), dietitians (8%), and others (25%); 85% were women, and 20% were trainees. The most popular module was Introduction to Mindfulness (n = 161), followed by Mindfulness in Daily Life (n = 146), and Mindful Breathing and Walking (n = 129); most (68%) participants who took 1 module took all 3 modules. There were no differences in participation in any module by gender, trainee status, or profession. Completing modules was associated with small but significant improvements on the Cognitive and Affective Mindfulness Scale–Revised, the Mindful Attention Awareness Scale, and the Five Facet Mindfulness Questionnaire ( P < 0.001 for all). Conclusion. Online training reaches diverse health professionals and is associated with immediate improvements in mindfulness. Additional research is warranted to compare the long-term cost-effectiveness of different doses of online and in-person mindfulness training on clinician burnout and quality of care.

Background: A substantial body of research suggests that cognitive reappraisal is effective at improving momentary affect, but it remains unclear how reappraisal leads to these changes. We tested the quality of reappraisal as one potential mechanism. Methods: A sample of 314 participants (Mage = 36.30; 51.0% female; 69.4% White) recruited online were instructed in the use of reappraisal and were asked to use reappraisal while recalling an upsetting memory for five minutes. Afterwards, participants rated the degree to which they used reappraisal during the task and independent raters coded the quality of participants’ written descriptions. Participants also rated the intensity of positive and negative affect before and after the memory task. Results: Reappraisal quality explained a significant proportion of the effect of reappraisal use on improvements in negative, ab = –1.49, SE = .33, 95% CI [–2.17, –.90], and positive affect, ab = 2.67, SE = .54, 95% CI [1.64, 3.79]. Depression symptom severity moderated these relations – the indirect effects of reappraisal quality were stronger among those with fewer depressive symptoms. Conclusions: These results suggest the quality with which reappraisal is used is one way through which reappraisal predicts improvements in affect, especially among people lower in depressive symptoms. Our findings enhance our understanding of the process of reappraisal and offer potential targets for interventions.

Sleep is an essential need that must be met, especially in the development phase since brain and body development will occur during sleep. Thus, sleep disturbance is a problem that will cause adverse effects on growth and development, especially for babies. Sleep quality for babies can be improved by providing baby massage on a regular basis. The purpose of this study was to prove whether there were differences in sleep quality before and after the massage in babies aged 3-4 months in Gelatik and Nuri IHC (Integrated Health Center) of Tanjungunggat Village of Tanjungpinang Municipality. Design: This was a Quasi Experiment study with a pretest-posttest method. The sample consisted of 17 respondents selected by purposive sampling technique. The statistical test used in this study was a dependent t-test with a significance level of 0.05.Result: The results showed that there was no significant difference between baby sleep duration before and after the massage (p = 0.414). However, there was significant difference between the frequency of waking up before and after the massage (p = 0.001) and there was a significant difference between the duration of waking up before and after the massage (p = 0.046. Discuss: Based on the results of this study, it is suggested that mothers should improve their knowledge on the importance of baby massage provided by health professionals and the health professionals should provide and demonstrate clear, complete and sustained information to the mothers and other related parties surrounding the IHC.

Due to the fact that milk has a short shelf life, the issue of its freezing and long-term storage in the frozen state is relevant. A study was conducted on the effect of freezing on the milk quality after its defrosting of cows-mothers and cows-daughters of Red-Motley breed. As a result, it was established how milk quality indicators to change after five months of storage in a frozen state in cows of two age groups. A high correlation was established between quality indicators before and after freezing. The influence of the “freezing” factor on milk quality indicators was recognized statistically significant, the “generation” factor – not significant.

The importance of teamworking has been long established in healthcare, with nurses working both as part of a nursing team and as members of the wider multidisciplinary team. The effective organization and delivery of healthcare services depends upon a wide range of health professionals, patients, families, and carers working together to achieve the best health outcomes and quality of life. Whether healthcare is necessary for an acute illness episode, helping someone with a long-term health condition achieve an acceptable level of function, or supporting a person who is dying, placing people at the centre of care decisions demands effective teamworking. Understanding the nature and characteristics of teams can help nurses to work effectively and uphold professional caring values when working with people in any healthcare setting. This chapter outlines the key definitions and characteristics of teamworking.

Abstract Background When enrolled in university or college, students receive varying degrees of training in managing practical situations in the workplace. However, after graduation, the young professionals meet their responsibilities at work. The experience of the transition between education and work may connote a feeling of professional uncertainty and lack of coping, both of which are important factors related to young professionals’ mental health. The gap between the two areas of knowledge is frequently described as ‘practice shock’. Very few studies of mental health among students and young professional workers have used longitudinal designs. In the present study, we conducted a longitudinal investigation of change and stability in the levels of psychological distress among healthcare professionals, teachers, and social workers from the end of their study programs until 3 years into their subsequent professional lives. We also assessed the extent to which psychological distress at the end of the study program, sociodemographic characteristics, coping with the professional role, the psychosocial workplace environment, and experience of overall quality of life can predict psychological distress 3 years into their professional lives. Methods Psychological distress was measured using the General Health Questionnaire 12 (GHQ-12). A total of 773 students/young professionals participated at both the end of their study programs and 3 years into their professional lives. Group differences were examined by the chi-squared test, independent samples t-test, and one-way analysis of variance. McNemar’s test were applied to identify changes in the proportion of cases at the two time points. Linear and logistic regressions were employed to identify factors associated with GHQ-12 Likert scores and GHQ-12 case scores, respectively. Results Psychological distress was significantly reduced at 3 years for health professionals. Among the social workers and teachers, the change in psychological distress was not significant during the same period. Higher current quality of life contributed to lower psychological distress. Conclusions Our findings support assumptions about higher levels of mental health problems as students, with mental health improving as health professionals and social workers move into professional work.

The Choice on Termination o f Pregnancy Act o f 1996substantially liberalised abortion law. Whilst a substantial number of terminations of pregnancies (TOPs) have already been performed in terms of the new Act, it has also surfaced that an array of factors of various kinds may impede its further implementation and operation. A study was undertaken to determine the nature and extent of any such impediments to the implementation of the Choice on Termination o f Pregnancy Act. More specifically a survey was conducted amongst a sample of 75 women who had undergone a TOP since the implementation of the Act; health professionals and social workers who provide TOP services (n=16); and health professionals and social workers who are in a position to refer women to TOP facilities (n=63). Overall, the clients were well treated at the TOP facilities, and were satisfied with the service given to them. However, post-counselling and to a lesser extent pre-counselling, is lacking. Counselling is important as a considerable proportion of the clients suffered from emotional feelings usually associated with depression and/or self-reproach before and after the termination procedure. Furthermore these clients did not usually discuss their termination with family members. TOP service providers were dissatisfied with the TOP facilities, especially the insufficient number of consultation and counselling rooms. Health care workers in a position to refer clients to TOP facilities were not always willing to do so, thereby obstructing the referral system. In the main, it is recommended that the entire TOP procedure should be done at clinics/hospitals so that clients will not have to do inductions at home, more trained staff should be available, facilities should be adequate and accessible, and there should be psychological support for staff.
