Abstract Background Challenge, sometimes perceived as stress, may be beneficial or detrimental to learning but the circumstances when it may be beneficial are not clear. This study looks at the association of challenge with perceived learning and how this might be influenced by affect, context or the type of learning. Method The participants, medical students in their first years of experiential clinical exposure, rated specified learning episodes (LEs) on the perceived learning (low to high), challenge (low to high) and affect (feeling positive to negative). Such learning episodes were self-identified or identified by course organisers. Correlations, using Kendall’s tau-b test, were conducted to explore the associations among learning, challenge and affect. In the second stage the types of LEs were then thematically classified in order to determine those that were positive for learning and challenging and/or associated with positive affect. Result There were positive correlations between perceived learning and challenge, and between perceived learning and affect for both types of LEs. The circumstances in which challenge (stress) promoted learning were authentic environments, authentic tasks and simulated clinical activities; most requiring a degree of social interaction. Conclusion Challenge and positive affect are beneficial in the perception of discrete learning, but are two separate constructs. Ideally both challenge and affect need to operate alongside authentic supportive clinical activities, that by their nature involve others, to maximise perceived learning.

Purpose This study aims to identify the relation between perceived learning opportunities, behavioral intentions to voluntarily stay or leave technology organizations and employee retention within these organizations. Design/methodology/approach This is a survey of 440 employees of a technology organization. Findings Learning opportunities perceived by managers and technicians presented significant positive correlations with the intention to stay and significant negative correlations with the intention to leave the organization. No relation was identified between perceived learning opportunities and manager retention. Among technicians, the correlation between perceived learning opportunities and retention was near zero. Practical implications If the organization wants to guarantee the intention of professionals to stay in the organization, the “perceived learning opportunities” indicator should have a similar level of importance as other objective indicators, such as performance and achievement. Originality/value To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first study to identify relations between perceived learning opportunities and behavioral intention to stay and leave of professionals that work in technology organizations.

Yoga is a holistic approach and it is quite difficult to understand the specific effects of Yoga for its many aspects such as Asana, Pranayama, Meditation, etc. Inspite of these challenges, scientific study on Yoga has been grown optimally. Several studies have shown the positive outcome of Yoga on various psychological and physiological parameters such as stress, anxiety, depression, memory, aggressiveness, etc. ( , ). Prison population is vulnerable to different psychiatric morbidities and often represent antisocial behavior ( , ). A randomized control trial has shown a significant improvement in perceived stress, positive affect, and psychological distress in prisoners after 10 weeks of Yoga practice ( ). A few meta-analysis has also suggested the positive effect of Yoga and meditation on psychological well-being and behavioral functioning in the prison population. The study has revealed that 10 weeks Yoga was associated with increased positive affect, impulse control, psychological well-being, sleep quality, and decreased aggressiveness, stress, and negative affect.

The paper summarises the process of adaptation of the God as a Causal Agent Scale (GCA) carried out on a sample of students of orthodox educational institutions. This scale aims to measure religious attribution in an individual, that is, is/her inclination to attribute the causes of events to divine agents. The data obtained in the study proved that all items of the GCA Scale have acceptable internal consistency. The first stage of validisation involved analysing the correlations with the rates of the Subjective Control Scale (SCS). Weak positive correlations were found with the rates of internality in all scales of the SCS except for the Interpersonal Relationships scale. The second stage invovled a quasiexperimental study that revealed positive correlations between the GCA and supernatural attribution. Moreover, the outcomes of factor analysis of variance showed significant differences between the subjects with high and low rates in GCA in their likeliness to use supernatural explanations. All these findings suggest that the GCA Scale is an effective tool for measuring one’s inclination to religious attribution within the Russian orthodox context.

Abstract Background ECGs are often taught without clinical context. However, in the clinical setting, ECGs are rarely interpreted without knowing the clinical presentation. We aimed to determine whether ECG diagnostic accuracy was influenced by knowledge of the clinical context and/or prior clinical exposure to the ECG diagnosis. Methods Fourth- (junior) and sixth-year (senior) medical students, as well as medical residents were invited to complete two multiple-choice question (MCQ) tests and a survey. Test 1 comprised 25 ECGs without case vignettes. Test 2, completed immediately thereafter, comprised the same 25 ECGs and MCQs, but with case vignettes for each ECG. Subsequently, participants indicated in the survey when last, during prior clinical clerkships, they have seen each of the 25 conditions tested. Eligible participants completed both tests and survey. We estimated that a minimum sample size of 165 participants would provide 80% power to detect a mean difference of 7% in test scores, considering a type 1 error of 5%. Results This study comprised 176 participants (67 [38.1%] junior students, 55 [31.3%] senior students, 54 [30.7%] residents). Prior ECG exposure depended on their level of training, i.e., junior students were exposed to 52% of the conditions tested, senior students 63.4% and residents 96.9%. Overall, there was a marginal improvement in ECG diagnostic accuracy when the clinical context was known (Cohen’s d = 0.35, p < 0.001). Gains in diagnostic accuracy were more pronounced amongst residents (Cohen’s d = 0.59, p < 0.001), than senior (Cohen’s d = 0.38, p < 0.001) or junior students (Cohen’s d = 0.29, p < 0.001). All participants were more likely to make a correct ECG diagnosis if they reported having seen the condition during prior clinical training, whether they were provided with a case vignette (odds ratio [OR] 1.46, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.24–1.71) or not (OR 1.58, 95% CI 1.35–1.84). Conclusion ECG interpretation using clinical vignettes devoid of real patient experiences does not appear to have as great an impact on ECG diagnostic accuracy as prior clinical exposure. However, exposure to ECGs during clinical training is largely opportunistic and haphazard. ECG training should therefore not rely on experiential learning alone, but instead be supplemented by other formal methods of instruction.

PurposeWhen it comes to tactics that organizational communicators can undertake to elicit positive gains with stakeholders, transparent communication ranks high on lists proposed by both the scholarly and trade literatures. However, little is known about why such communication tactics are effective on a psychological level. Thus, this study aims to propose and test a psychological model of transparent communication effectiveness in the context of proactive, socially responsible brand communication. The model was based on three propositions: (1) transparent communication offers audiences an important opportunity to learn more about organizational functioning, (2) learning elicits an organizationally relevant positive affective state and (3) positive affect facilitates a robust relationship between perceived learning outcomes and positive evaluation of the organization.Design/methodology/approachThis study used an experiment to test the hypothesized model.FindingsSupport was found for the proposed model. Specifically, the data indicated that the use of transparent massaging elicited higher levels of perceived learning. Perceived learning was associated with positive brand-relevant affect. Finally, positive brand relevant-affect predicted positive summary brand evaluation.Originality/valueTaken as a whole, the current findings inform theorizing on transparent organizational and brand communication by describing the foundational roles played by perceived knowledge gain and positive affect in encouraging positive message-related outcomes.

A study has been made of variations in the shrinkage from the live pig to the carcass and from the carcass to the side of Wiltshire bacon. Most of the variation occurs at the first stage when the losses have a variance of 17·67 lb. compared with only 4·59 lb. and the second stage. Similarly, breed differences were found at the first stage, Wessex and Essex pigs giving 1·1 and 2·7 lb. more carcass respectively than the Large White pigs, but not at the second stage. On the other hand, differences between litter groups were found at both stages.Correlations made between carcass measurements and yield of carcass and bacon were generally found to be small and positive. Antagonisms were indicated between quantity and quality of bacon, in particular by positive correlations between thickness of back-fat and weight of carcass, and between a desirable proportion of cuts and losses on slaughter. The problem of deciding the relative attention which should be paid to various carcass characteristics is discussed and the need for an index of total carcass merit is pointed out.

170 undergraduate students completed the Boredom Proneness Scale by Farmer and Sundberg and the Multiple Affect Adjective Checklist by Zuckerman and Lubin. Significant negative relationships were found between boredom proneness and negative affect scores (i.e., Depression, Hostility, Anxiety). Significant positive correlations also obtained between boredom proneness and positive affect (i.e., Positive Affect, Sensation Seeking). The correlations between boredom proneness “subscales” and positive and negative affect were congruent with those obtained using total boredom proneness scores. Implications for counseling are discussed.

B-lymphocytes normally synthesize small amounts of immunoglobulin, some of which is incorporated into the cell membrane where it serves as receptor of antigen. These cells, on contact with specific antigen, proliferate and differentiate to plasma cells which synthesize and secrete large quantities of immunoglobulin. The two stages of differentiation of this cell line (generation of B-lymphocytes and antigen-driven maturation to plasma cells) are clearly separable during ontogeny and in some immune deficiency diseases. The present report describes morphologic aberrations of B-lymphocytes in two diseases in which second stage differentiation is defective.

Transmission electron microscopy is an important approach to the characterization of the morphology of multiphase latices. Various sample preparation techniques have been applied to multiphase latices such as OsO4, RuO4 and CsOH stains to distinguish the polymer phases or domains. Radiation damage by an electron beam of latices imbedded in ice has also been used as a technique to study particle morphology. Further studies have been developed in the use of freeze-fracture and the effect of differential radiation damage at liquid nitrogen temperatures of the latex particles embedded in ice and not embedded. Two different series of two-stage latices were prepared with (1) a poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) seed and poly(styrene) (PS) second stage; (2) a PS seed and PMMA second stage. Both series have varying amounts of second-stage monomer which was added to the seed latex semicontinuously. A drop of diluted latex was placed on a 200-mesh Formvar-carbon coated copper grid.
