Abstract Background Appropriate training of health professionals has been recommended to increase organ donation rates. Some studies have shown insufficient knowledge among medical students. This survey aims to describe their knowledge and attitude toward organ donation (OD). Method We designed, pre-tested and conducted an online survey of all undergraduate medical students from Montreal, Laval and Sherbrooke universities in 2016–2017. Multivariate linear regression identified factors associated with a better knowledge score. Results Twenty-two percent (750/3344) of students completed the survey. Ninety-one percent of students adequately knew that neurological death is irreversible; 76% acknowledged that someone could be neurologically deceased while his heart is still beating; 69% were not aware of circulatory determination of death. For only one knowledge item, senior students had a better answer than junior students. Total knowledge score was associated with exposure to OD during medical studies and comfort in answering patients’ questions about OD (p < 0,001). Regarding attitude, 96% of respondents wished to become organ donors after death and 92% supported OD training during their medical training. Conclusion Despite a favourable attitude, medical students have limited knowledge of OD. Findings suggest the need for a formal curriculum about OD, as students expressed.

Objective: This study was conducted to evaluate the knowledge and attitude of undergraduate medical students toward research. Study Design: Cross sectional study. Setting: Private Medical Colleges of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Period: November 2018 to July 2019. Material & Methods: A total of 938 final year medical students participated in the study. A validated self administered questionnaire was used for the collection of data. The student’s perception was assessed through questionnaire based on 5-point Likert scale. For the assessment of knowledge MCQs were marked as 1 in case of correct answer and 0 in case of incorrect answer. Results: Out of 1300 students, 938 returned the questionnaire resulting in a 74% response rate. 481(51%) participants were male and 457(49%) were females. The participants had a mean knowledge score of 6.103 out of a total of 15 questions and mean attitude score of 76.29. Conclusion: This study concludes a low knowledge score coupled with a positive attitude of doing research. More attention must be placed on these parameters in the curriculum to improve student knowledge in health research.

Background: Pharmacovigilance has become an important tool to ensure the safety of patient in recent years. To ensure right practice of pharmacovigilance, proper understanding is very essential and the medical colleges with the undergraduate teaching program become a vital platform to educate and train the medical students towards pharmacovigilance. This study compares the impact of teaching program of the undergraduate curriculum in assessing the knowledge and attitude of the undergraduate medical students towards pharmacovigilance.Methods: The study includes 158 undergraduate medical students of second year being trained in pharmacology at Mysore Medical College. A validated and standardized questionnaire was distributed to all the students twice, once during their 3rd term (pre-sensitization) and the second time during their 5th term (post sensitization). Willingness to answer and complete the questionnaire was considered as consent.Results: The pre and post sensitization questionnaires were analyzed individually. A decrease from 114 to 90 students (15.19 % decrease) willing to complete the questionnaire was seen. The mean total knowledge score was 6.37±1.90 during the pre-test as compared to 6.35±1.78 in the post test analysis. An overall increase was seen with the knowledge of ADRs and pharmacovigilance. Only 18.4% knew of the presence of an ADR monitoring center in the institute pre-test which increased to 64.4% post sensitization. 81.6% answered rightly the type of ADRs that needs to be reported as compared to the 67.3% pre-sensitization. The overall attitude towards ADR reporting was seen to be in the right direction, with 71% saying that pharmacovigilance covered adequately in the curriculum. Voluntary reporting attitude increased from 74.6% to 88%. 70% of the students feel ADR reporting as a professional obligation, while only 54% felt so pre-sensitization.Conclusions: Pharmacovigilance should be included in the curriculum with more hours dedicated to teaching. Various interesting methods should be implemented to train and made aware of its importance to ensure patient safety on a global scale.

This cross-sectional online survey aimed to determine the awareness of Arab adults on the benefits of consuming nutrient-dense foods, such as kale. A total of 1200 respondents completed the survey. The questionnaire included questions related to socio-economic information, e.g., whether the participants have consumed kale, if they observed any health effects, and 13 other questions to test their knowledge on this superfood. Only 276 (23%) of the participants had previously consumed kale, with 64.5% reporting favorable health outcomes, the most common of which was weight reduction, and only 17.8% reporting side effects, such as constipation and gastrointestinal irritation. From the 13 kale knowledge questions, the average total knowledge score, scaled from 0 to 10, was 3.5 and 3.7 for males and females, respectively. The regression analysis revealed that age, income, and educational status were significant contributors for predicting better knowledge scores, as older individuals with a higher income and higher education scored higher (odds ratio of 2.96, 2.00 and 4.58, respectively). To summarize, there is a dearth of awareness about kale and its health benefits in Saudi Arabia. Kale should be promoted as a super food in all segments, particularly among the younger, lower-income, and less-educated sections of the population.

Background: In India the rate of organ donation is less than 1 per million population. The need for organ transplantation is more than 5 lakhs per year. There is a wide discrepancy between demand and donation. Health care professionals can play a vital role in creating awareness in the society and encouraging the people to donate organs and thus help in filling the gap between the demand and donation. Aim of the study was to assess the knowledge and attitude regarding organ donation among medical students.Methods: A 24 item semi structured and self-administered questionnaire was used to assess the knowledge and attitude regarding organ donation from 300 undergraduate medical students in PGIMS, Rohtak. Data was collected, compiled and analyzed using SPSS.Results: The awareness regarding different organ donation was found to be kidney (79%), liver (70.7%), heart (61%), intestine (3.7%), and lung (10.3%). 28% participants were knowing about NOTTO (National organ and tissue transplant organization). 85% participants were willing to donate their organs.Conclusions: There is good knowledge and positive attitude towards organ donation among undergraduate medical students. But their attitude is not being transformed into organ donation. Separate chapters on organ donation and its need in our country should be included in the school curriculum, interactive sessions should be held in medical colleges and opportunities should be given to them during their college life to voluntarily donate their organs, only then we can cultivate their positive attitude and knowledge.

Background: The shortage of organ donors is the key rate-limiting factor for organ transplantation in India. Many strategies have been proposed. One of the strategy is by improving awareness of organ donation and transplantation in the population. This study seeks to assess the knowledge and attitude of the medical students toward organ donation and transplantation. The objective of the study was to assess the knowledge and attitude regarding organ donation and transplantation among medical students.Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 510 undergraduate medical students of K.S Hegde Medical Academy. A tool with 30 questions was designed and administered to the students, in order to assess their knowledge and attitude regarding organ donation and transplantation. Data collected was analysed using SPSS software.Results: The mean age of the students was (20.21±1.32). When compared to boys, girls reported higher mean scores in knowledge (9.22±1.11); and attitude (7.32±0.81). The first year students had higher scores for their knowledge (9.46±1.28) compared to other years. The third year students showed a higher mean attitude score (1.61±1.07) (p=0.02). Hindus scored significantly higher mean knowledge, and attitude as compared to Christians and Muslims (p=0.03). There was a positive correlation between mean knowledge, and attitude of students regarding organ donation and transplantation.Conclusions: There was adequate knowledge in students but their attitude was poor. The study throws light on their inadequacies of knowledge and attitude of medical students, necessitating the inclusion of the topic in their curriculum.

BackgroundEmpathy is a key health care concept and refers to care that incorporates understanding of patient perspective’s, shared decision making, and consideration of the broader context in which illness is experience. Evidence suggests experiences of doctor empathy correlate with improved health outcomes and patient satisfaction. It has also been linked to job satisfaction, and mental wellbeing for doctors. To date, there is a paucity of evidence on empathy levels among medical students. This is critical to understand given that it is a key point at which perceptions and practices of empathy in the longer term might be formed.AimTo quantify the level of empathy among UK undergraduate medical studentsMethodAn anonymised cross-sectional online survey was distributed to medical students across three universities. The previously validated Davis’s Interpersonal Reactivity Index was used to quantify empathy. The survey also collected information on age, sex, ethnicity, year of medical school training and included a free-text box for ‘any other comments’.ResultsData analysis is currently underway with high response rates. Mean empathy scores by age, sex, year of study and ethnic group are presented. A correlation analysis will examine associations between age and year of study, and mean empathy sores.ConclusionThese data will help to provide a better understanding of empathy levels to inform the provision of future empathy training and medical school curriculum design. Given previous evidence linking experiences of empathy to better health outcomes, the findings may also be significant to future patient care

Introduction: The coronavirus pandemic has involved nearly all the countries of the world. The lockdowns and closure of educational institutes to reduce the risk of disease transmission has brought a change in the medium of teaching as most educational institutes have moved to the online mode. There is a widespread increase in stress as the number of cases and mortality associated with Coronavirus 2019 disease (COVID-19) continue each day. Aim: To assess the stress status of first year undergraduate medical students in reference to the coronavirus pandemic and the perception of first year undergraduate medical students in reference to the E-learning being carried out during the coronavirus pandemic. Materials and Methods: This was a cross-sectional web-based online survey that was conducted using a questionnaire in August 2020 at Hamdard Institute of Medical Sciences and Research, New Delhi, India. The questionnaire was prepared and reviewed by the involved faculty members of the project and it was approved by a faculty from Department of Psychiatry. Reliability of questionnaire was measured using Cronbach’s alpha (0.89). A questionnaire with 20 questions was administered via Google forms to all 100 students of first year MBBS course. Some of the questions in the questionnaire were framed to assess the stress status of the students; some were designed to study students’ perception of E-learning. Data was represented as the percentage distribution of response for each question. Results: Ninety five responses were received, after accounting for exclusion factors; data was compiled for 91 respondents. Out of the 91 participants in the study, 48.4% were males (n=44) and 51.6% were females (n=47). Most of the students in this study (84.6%) felt that online teaching had helped in learning Physiology theory; around 43% students found online practical teaching useful. Around 39% students have reported internet connectivity issues all the time while 59% faced problem sometimes. Total 51.6% of students had difficulty in accessibility to devices. Due to coronavirus pandemic, 37.4% of students have reported to be under stress. Around 33% reported feeling unsafe all the time while 39.5% felt unsafe some of the times. Conclusion: Students found online teaching more helpful in learning Physiology theory than practical. Majority of class reported internet connectivity issues. All the responders agreed that this pandemic affected their regular life. Most of the students felt that online classes have helped them to remain positive and motivated towards study.

Background: The rapid growth and availability of smartphones and social media platforms (SMP) have changed the medical students' approach to learn and manage the information about their academic, personal and professional lives. Methods: An online survey was done in undergraduate medical students of PIMS, Karimnagar to collect information about usage pattern and perception of SMP, and willingness to participate for using SMP as a learning tool in medical education. Results: Total 433 (Females – 275) out of 600 students participated in the survey from the first year (125), secondyear (151) and third-year (157) MBBS students. Everyone is using some type of SMP. They find SMP nearly equal to lecture materials and subject notes as a useful learning tool and there was significantly increasing trend of perception of SMP being a useful learning tool from the first-year (79%), second-year (83%) to third-year (92%), (p=0.01). Almost 93% want to see SMP used at institute level in medical education. Female students (52.4%) are significantly more willing for active participation than male students (43%), p=0.04. First-year students (56%) are more ready for active participation followed by third (48.4%) and second (43.7%) year students, p=0.08. Conclusion: Most students are willing to include SMP in medical education as a learning tool and ready to participate in different activities if they get the required training. As all students have smartphones and efficiently utilizing different services on their devices, SMP can become an effective learning tool in medical education.
