AbstractThis editorial summarizes eight research articles included in this supplement issue for the 2020 International Conference on Intelligent Biology and Medicine (ICIBM 2020) conference, that was held on August 9-10, 2020 (virtual conference), with a topic on data-driven analytics in biomedical genomics. These articles cover a wide range of topics in medical genomics that focus on integrative analysis of genomics data together with other types of data toward understanding complex human diseases, including cancer. With the growing importance of data analytics in biomedical science, we expect this collection of research articles provides scientific discussions in this direction.

AbstractThe goal of this editorial is to summarize the 2019 International Conference on Intelligent Biology and Medicine (ICIBM 2019) conference that took place on June 9–11, 2019 in The Ohio State University, Columbus, OH, and to provide an introductory summary of the seven articles presented in this supplement issue. ICIBM 2019 hosted four keynote speakers, four eminent scholar speakers, five tutorials and workshops, twelve concurrent sessions and a poster session, totaling 23 posters, spanning state-of-the-art developments in bioinformatics, genomics, next-generation sequencing (NGS) analysis, scientific databases, cancer and medical genomics, and computational drug discovery. A total of 105 original manuscripts were submitted to ICIBM 2019, and after careful review, seven were selected for this supplement issue. These articles cover methods and applications for functional annotations of miRNA targeting, clonal evolution of bacterial cells, gene co-expression networks that describe a given phenotype, functional binding site analysis of RNA-binding proteins, normalization of genome architecture mapping data, sample predictions based on multiple NGS data types, and prediction of an individual’s genetic admixture given exonic single nucleotide polymorphisms data.

Although 31 years have passed since the discovery of endothelin, that pioneering report, and the subsequent flood of influential studies elucidating its molecular and clinical details, have since paved the way for thousands of publications. They showed the promise of endothelin and the vast amount of work that remains to be done to fully unleash the potential this peptide possesses, both as a key physiological regulator and as a therapeutic target. Endothelin conferences and their proceedings have served as a host for many of these breakthrough studies, and in keeping with this fine tradition, Endothelin XVI will host novel research articles presented at the Sixteenth International Conference on Endothelin (ET-16) as its proceedings. On September 22–25, 2019, ET-16 was held at Kobe Port Oasis, Kobe, Japan, where numerous important discoveries were presented to the scientific community for the first time, many of which are compiled and published in this special issue. As the Editors of this special issue that comprises in-depth reviews, insightful editorials, and numerous original research articles discussing findings from various biomedical fields, we are extremely proud to present Endothelin XVI. We sincerely hope for the continued growth of this field for the benefit of the patients and the advancement of biomedical science.

AbstractIn this introduction article, we summarize the 2020 International Conference on Intelligent Biology and Medicine (ICIBM 2020) conference which was held on August 9–10, 2020 (virtual conference). We then briefly describe the nine research articles included in this supplement issue. ICIBM 2020 hosted four scientific sections covering current topics in bioinformatics, computational biology, genomics, biomedical informatics, among others. A total of 75 original manuscripts were submitted to ICIBM 2020. All the papers were under rigorous review (at least three reviewers), and highly ranked manuscripts were selected for oral presentation and supplement issues. This genomics supplement issue included nine manuscripts. These articles cover methods and applications for single cell RNA sequencing, multi-omics data integration for gene regulation, gene fusion detection from long-read RNA sequencing, gene co-expression analysis of metabolic pathways in cancer, integrative genome-wide association studies (GWAS) of subcortical imaging phenotype in Alzheimer’s disease, as well as deep learning methods for protein structure prediction, metabolic pathway membership inference, and horizontal gene transfer (HGT) insertion sites prediction.

In this paper, we first summarise the 2020 International Conference of EMBnet (The Global Bioinformatics Network) on “Bioinformatics Approaches to Precision  Research”, held on 23th-24th September 2020,  and then briefly introduce the main topics and contributions presented at the Conference and published in this supplement issue. The Conference’s main aim was to share the knowledge and scientific achievements of EMBnet members to prompt the cross-fertilisation of ideas and collaborations.  The title reflects the type of contributions presented (20 in total), covering a wide range of cutting-edge research topics for which advanced bioinformatics methods and precision approaches are essential, and training in Bioinformatics. As for many other organisations, 2020 was the first year that the EMBnet Annual General Meeting was not in presence but ran on a virtual meeting platform because of the pandemic’s travel restrictions to moves. If this situation represented a limitation to our social activities, it allowed us to offer the possibility to attend the Conference to a larger number of researchers (i.e., 190 from 38 different countries). Among all registered people,  148 were following the conference presentations on both days. AbstractThe International Association for Intelligent Biology and Medicine (IAIBM) is a nonprofit organization that promotes intelligent biology and medical science. It hosts an annual International Conference on Intelligent Biology and Medicine (ICIBM), which was initially established in 2012. Due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, the ICIBM 2020 was held for the first time as a virtual online conference on August 9 to 10. The virtual conference had ~ 300 registered participants and featured 41 online real-time presentations. ICIBM 2020 received a total of 75 manuscript submissions, and 12 were selected to be published in this special issue of BMC Bioinformatics. These 12 manuscripts cover a wide range of bioinformatics topics including network analysis, imaging analysis, machine learning, gene expression analysis, and sequence analysis.

AbstractBetween June 9–11, 2019, the International Conference on Intelligent Biology and Medicine (ICIBM 2019) was held in Columbus, Ohio, USA. Accurate quantification of the blast load arising from detonation of a high explosive has applications in transport security, infrastructure assessment and defence. In order to design efficient and safe protective systems in such aggressive environments, it is of critical importance to understand the magnitude and distribution of loading on a structural component located close to an explosive charge. In particular, peak specific impulse is the primary parameter that governs structural deformation under short-duration loading. Within this so-called extreme near-field region, existing semi-empirical methods are known to be inaccurate, and high-fidelity numerical schemes are generally hampered by a lack of available experimental validation data. As such, the blast protection community is not currently equipped with a satisfactory fast-running tool for load prediction in the near-field. In this article, a validated computational model is used to develop a suite of numerical near-field blast load distributions, which are shown to follow a similar normalised shape. This forms the basis of the data-driven predictive model developed herein: a Gaussian function is fit to the normalised loading distributions, and a power law is used to calculate the magnitude of the curve according to established scaling laws. The predictive method is rigorously assessed against the existing numerical dataset, and is validated against new test models and available experimental data. High levels of agreement are demonstrated throughout, with typical variations of <5% between experiment/model and prediction. The new approach presented in this article allows the analyst to rapidly compute the distribution of specific impulse across the loaded face of a wide range of target sizes and near-field scaled distances and provides a benchmark for data-driven modelling approaches to capture blast loading phenomena in more complex scenarios.
