This study is investigated the thermal performance of seven turns of the oscillating heat pipe (OHP) by an experimental investigation and CFD simulation. The OHP is designed and made from a copper tube with an inner diameter 3.5 mm and thickness 0.6 mm and the condenser, evaporator, and adiabatic lengths are 300, 300, and 210 mm respectively.  Water is used as a working fluid with a filling ratio of 50% of the total volume. The evaporator part is heated by hot air (35, 40, 45, and 50) oC with various face velocity (0.5, 1, and 1.5) m/s. The condenser section is cold by air at temperature 15 oC. The CFD simulation is done by using the volume of fluid (VOF) method to model two-phase flow by conjugating a user-defined function code (UDF) to the FLUENT code. Results showed that the maximum heat input is 107.75 W while the minimum heat is 13.75 W at air inlet temperature 35 oC with air velocity 0.5m/s. The thermal resistance decreased with increasing of heat input. The results were recorded minimum thermal resistance 0.2312 oC/W at 107.75 W and maximum thermal resistance 1.036 oC/W at 13.75W. In addition, the effective thermal conductivity increased due to increasing heat input.  The numerical results showed a good agreement with experimental results with a maximum deviation of 15%.

Introduction: The motion of many real world systems is described by essentially non-linear and non-stationary models. A number of approaches to the control of such plants are based on constructing an internal model of non-stationarity. However, the non-stationarity model parameters can vary widely, leading to more errors. It is only assumed in this paper that the change rate of the object parameters is limited, while the initial uncertainty can be quite large.Purpose: Analysis of adaptive control algorithms for non-linear and time-varying systems with an explicit reference model, synthesized by the speed gradient method.Results: An estimate was obtained for the maximum deviation of a closed-loop system solution from the reference model solution. It is shown that with sufficiently slow changes in the parameters and a small initial uncertainty, the limit error in the system can be made arbitrarily small. Systems designed by the direct approach and systems based on the identification approach are both considered. The procedures for the synthesis of an adaptive regulator and analysis of the synthesized system are illustrated by an example.Practical relevance: The obtained results allow us to build and analyze a broad class of adaptive systems with reference models under non-stationary conditions.

PVDF sensor is a sensor that is often used to measure force, strain, vibration and heat. In this study, PVDF sensors with surface polarization are used to detect cutting forces on the machine. The PVDF sensor that has been polarized on the surface is placed in the chuck part of the engine. Measuring instrumen for testing and calibrating PVDF sensors is oscilloscope with increased loading and reduced axial and tangential directions. After the calibration process, the PVDF sensor was used to measure cutting force on drilling machine, and then the results were compared with the PCB piezotronics force sensor. The PVDF sensor output signal is measured and studied for its voltage using an oscilloscope, where the output signal is compared to the weight given to the PVDF sensor. From the results of these tests indicate that the maximum deviation in axial loading is 0.32V while the tangential loading is 0.31VKeywords. This paper demonstrates the statistical approach for describing failures and lifetimes of water mains. The statistical approach is based on pipe inventory data and the maintenance data registered in the data base. The approach consists of data pre-processing and statistical analysis. Two classes of statistical models are applied, namely counting process models and lifetime models. With lifetime models, one can estimate the probability which a pipe will fail within a time horizon. With counting process models one can see the deteriorating (or improving) trend in time of a group of “identical” pipes and their rates of occurrence of failure (ROCOF). The case study with the data base from Trondheim municipality (Norway) demonstrates the applicability of the statistical approach and leads to the following results: 1). In the past 20 years, Trondheim municipality has experienced approximately 250 to 300 failures per year. However, the number of failures per year will significantly increase in the near future unless better maintenance practice is implemented now. 2). Unprotected ductile iron pipes have a higher probability of failures than other materials. The average lifetime of unprotected ductile iron pipes is approximately 30 to 40 years shorter than the lifetime of a cast iron pipe. 3). Pipes installed 1963 and 1975 are most likely to fail in the future; 4) The age of a pipe does not play a significant role for the remaining lifetime of the pipe; 5). After 2 to 3 failures, a pipe enters a fast-failure stage (i.e., frequent multiple between failures).

Equations, which have nonlinear nonmonotonic dependence of one of the coefficients on an unknown function, can describe processes of heat and mass transfer. As a rule, existing approximate methods do not provide solutions with acceptable accuracy. Numerical methods do not involve obtaining an analytical expression for the unknown function and require studying the convergence of the algorithm used. The value of absolute error is uncertain. The authors propose an approximate method for solving such problems based on Westphal comparison theorems. The comparison theorems allow finding upper and lower bounds of the unknown exact solution. A special procedure developed for the stepwise improvement of these bounds provide solutions with a given accuracy. There are only a few problems for equations with nonlinear nonmonotonic coefficients for which the exact solution has been obtained. One of such problems, presented in this article, shows the efficiency of the proposed method. The results prove that the proposed method for obtaining bounds of the solution of a nonlinear nonmonotonic equation of parabolic type can be considered as a new method of the approximate analytical solution having guaranteed accuracy. In addition, the proposed here method allows calculating the maximum deviation from the unknown exact solution of the results of other approximate and numerical methods.

In this paper we present a novel, cost-effective camera-based multi-axis force/torque sensor concept for integration into metallic load-bearing structures. A two-part pattern consisting of a directly incident and mirrored light beam is projected onto the imaging sensor surface. This allows the capturing of 3D displacements, occurring due to structure deformation under load in a single image. The displacement of defined features in size and position can be accurately analyzed and determined through digital image correlation (DIC). Validation on a prototype shows good accuracy of the measurement and a unique identification of all in- and out-of-plane displacement components under multiaxial load. Measurements show a maximum deviation related to the maximum measured values between 2.5% and 4.8% for uniaxial loads ( and between 2.5% and 10.43% for combined bending, torsion and axial load. In the course of the investigations, the measurement inaccuracy was partly attributed to the joint used between the sensor parts and the structure as well as to eccentric load.

AbstractWe survey the ‘generalized fractional Poisson process’ (GFPP). The GFPP is a renewal process generalizing Laskin’s fractional Poisson counting process and was first introduced by Cahoy and Polito. The GFPP contains two index parameters with admissible ranges 0 < β ≤ 1, α > 0 and a parameter characterizing the time scale. The GFPP involves Prabhakar generalized Mittag-Leffler functions and contains for special choices of the parameters the Laskin fractional Poisson process, the Erlang process and the standard Poisson process. We demonstrate this by means of explicit formulas. We develop the Montroll-Weiss continuous-time random walk (CTRW) for the GFPP on undirected networks which has Prabhakar distributed waiting times between the jumps of the walker. For this walk, we derive a generalized fractional Kolmogorov-Feller equation which involves Prabhakar generalized fractional operators governing the stochastic motions on the network. We analyze in d dimensions the ‘well-scaled’ diffusion limit and obtain a fractional diffusion equation which is of the same type as for a walk with Mittag-Leffler distributed waiting times. The GFPP has the potential to capture various aspects in the dynamics of certain complex systems.

The study and control for chip have a significant impact on machining quality and productivity. In this paper, GH4169 was cut with an indexable disc milling cutter. The chips corresponding to each group of cutting parameters were collected, and the chip parameters (chip curl radius, chip thickness deformation coefficient, and chip width deformation coefficient) were measured. The qualitative relationship between the chip parameters and cutting parameters was studied. The quadratic polynomial models between chip parameters and cutting parameters were established and verified. The results showed that the chip parameters (chip curl radius, chip thickness deformation coefficient and chip width deformation coefficient) were negatively correlated with spindle speed; chip parameters were positively correlated with feed speed; chip parameters were positively correlated with cutting depth. The maximum deviation rate between measured values and predicted values for chip curl radius was 9.37%; the maximum deviation rate for cutting thickness deformation coefficient was 13.8%, and the maximum deviation rate of cutting width deformation coefficient was 7.86%. It can be seen that the established models are accurate. The models have guiding significance for chip control.

In order to provide a theoretical basis for the thermal design of the neutron production target, flow and heat transfer characteristics are studied by using numerical simulations and experiments. A rectangular mini-channel experimental model consistent with the geometric shape of the heat dissipation structure of neutron production target was established, in which the aspect ratio and gap thickness of the test channel were 53.8:1 and 1.3 mm, respectively. The experimental results indicate that the critical Re of the mini-channel is between 3500 and 4000, and when Re reaches 21,000, Nu can reach 160. The simulation results are in good agreement with the experimental data, and the numerical simulation method can be used for the variable structure optimization design of the target in the later stage. The relationship between the flow pressure drop of the target mini-channel and the aspect ratio and Re is obtained by numerical simulation. The maximum deviation between the correlation and the experimental value is 6%.
