Background: Rosa damascena L. is the most notable species of the Rosaceae family in the world, and has been used in food, cosmetics, and the pharmaceutical industry. Bioactive compounds in this flower are known to have several activities, such as antioxidant, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory. In this study, the antioxidant and collagenase inhibitory activities of R. damascena L. petal and receptacle extracts were evaluated.  Methods: Ethanolic extraction of R. damascena L. petals (EERP) and R. damascena L. receptacles (EERR) were obtained, and bioactive compounds (flavonoids, phenolics, alkaloids, steroids, tannins, terpenoids, and triterpenoids) were classified by phytochemical screening. Antioxidant activities were analyzed by Ferric Reducing Antioxidant Power (FRAP) assay, while anti-collagenase analysis was examined through the inhibition of collagenase. Results: Phytochemical test revealed the presence of flavonoids, phenolics, alkaloids, steroids, triterpenoids, triterpenes, and tannin. EERP showed higher FRAP activity (164.23 ± 1.34 μM Fe(II)) than EERR (12.85 ± 6.19 μM Fe(II)). EERP also had higher inhibitory activity of collagenase (IC50 = 115.48±1.78 µM/mL) compared to EERR (IC50 = 141.96±6.13 µM/mL). Conclusions: R. damascena L. petal and receptacle ethanol extracts contain several components, such as phenolics, flavonoids, alkaloids, tannins, terpenes, triterpenoids, and steroids. These extracts exhibit antioxidant activity and collagenase inhibition. R. damascena L. petal extract showed higher antioxidant activity through FRAP assay and inhibitory activity of collagenase than R. damascena L. receptacle extract.

The Zanthoxylum avicennae 95% EtoH extracts after concentration were dissolved in H2O and extracted with EtoAc and n-BuOH Successively. The n-BuOH layer was added to Diaion HP-20 macroporous resin column, then the resin was washed by distilled water to get rid of impurity, then washed by 20%, 40% and 60% methanol individually, and obtained M20, M40and M60respectively. And antioxidant activity was assessed using three methods: DPPH radical-scavenging activity, ABTS+radical-scavenging activity, ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) assay. The results indicate that TEAC value of M40were higher than other part extracted from Zanthoxylum avicennae 95% EtoH extracts during three methods .The results of the experiments also can find M40is the strongest antioxidant activity part in Zanthoxylum avicennae 95% EtoH extracts and provide reference for further isolating the part M40.

The antioxidant activities (μmol ascorbic acid equivalent/g fresh weight) of the edible part of fruits grown in northern Greece were determined using the ferric-reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) assay. Differences were observed among species as well as cultivars of the same species. Cornelian cherry had the highest FRAP value followed by jujube. Cherries, black grapes, and blackberry showed high activity followed by pears, persimmons, plums, peaches, white grapes, pomegranates, apples, nectarines, kiwifruits, quinces, figs, and apricots.

Aqueous extracts of whole alfalfa plants (AP) and alfalfa pellets (APe) were examined for nutritional values, bioactive compounds (total phenolic content (TPC), phenolic compounds (PC), total flavonoids content (TFC), flavonoids compounds (FC), isoflavones), amino acids (AA) and antioxidant activity of AP and APe assessed via a DHHP radical scavenging assay and ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) assay. The potential ingredients in the form of AP and APe were used to evaluate the nutritional values measured by chemical composition, and to investigate bioactive compounds, AA and antioxidant activity to further contribute to use as a feed ingredient or application as a high-value alternative feed supplement in the ruminant diet. Crude protein and tannins were higher in the APe (18.17 and 3.08 %) than the AP (16.21 and 1.80 %). Higher content of organic matter, crude fiber, neutral-detergent fiber, acid-detergent fiber, acid-detergent lignin was observed for AP than APe. The TPC and TFC were more abundant in AP than in APe and AP also showed stronger antioxidant activity via DPPH than APe, with positive correlations of TPC, TFC and DPPH. The highest values of gallic acid in terms of PC and apigenin in terms of FC of APe were 215.30 and 2278.27 µg/g dry weight (DW), respectively, while the highest levels of genistein and daidzein occurred in AP at 104.37 and 130.91 µg/g DW, respectively. The total of essential AA was found to be in vary the range of 9.33 to 16689.47 µg/g DW in different forms of samples, with valine as the highest (5451 µg/g DW) in APe, followed by phenylalanine (4.30 µg/g DW) in AP.

Objective: To assess the antioxidant activity from another part of the plant, in this study, leaf extracts in n-hexane were fractionated.Methods: Ten fractions were obtained and tested in vitro for antioxidant activity using two methods, 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and ferricreducing antioxidant power (FRAP), to identify the most active fraction.Results: The IC50 of the most active fraction was 36.24 μg/mL using the DPPH method, and the EC50 was 39.54 μg/mL using the FRAP method. Themost active fraction was also shown to contain terpenoids.Conclusion: The most active fraction of an n-hexane extract of the leaves of Gacinia bancana Miq., which was tested by both DPPH and FRAP methodshad antioxidant activities with IC50 and EC50 values of 36.2482 μg/mL and 39.5442 μg/mL, respectively. Phytochemical screening showed that activefraction contains terpenoids.

Objectives: Antioxidant activity was studied in naturally dried seed extract and hot air oven dried extract of Actinidia deliciosa and Psidium guajava using ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) assay method. Methods: The dried powdered seed of A. deliciosa and P. guajava 10 g was dissolved in 100 ml of ethanol in four different conical flasks S1 (for naturaly dried seeds of A. deliciosa), S2 (for hot air oven-dried seeds of A. deliciosa), S3 (for naturally dried seeds of P. guajava), and S4 (for hot air oven-dried seeds of P. guajava). The extract was carried out in shaker at 120 rpm for 72 h at room temperature by mild shaking. The extract was taken out and centrifuged at 4000 rpm for 10 min, the supernatant was taken out. The supernatant was placed in a water bath at 95°C for the solvent to evaporate and stored at room temperature. Results: According to the FRAP results, P. guajava which was naturally dried and extracted has shown the highest antioxidant activity (sample 3) then followed by the samples S4, S1, and S2. The least activity is observed in the sample (S2). Conclusion: By comparing the antioxidant activity between the A. deliciosa and P. guajava with the help of FRAP assay results, P. guajava has the highest amount of vitamin C (responsible for antioxidant activity) when compared to that of the A. deliciosa.

The biological activity of chocolates gains more and more attention of consumers. Its antioxidant properties depend, among other factors, mainly on the origin of cocoa and the characteristics that this origin gives to the final product. Therefore, the aim of the study was to measure and compare the total content of polyphenols, antioxidant activity, and key odorants of commercial chocolates made from blend cocoa with single-origin ones. The highest content of polyphenols was found in 90% blend cocoa chocolate and single-origin samples, while the lowest content was exhibited by 100% chocolate from blend cocoa mass. The highest antioxidant activity measured by 2,2′-Azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) diammonium salt (ABTS) and ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) assays was observed in the sample of chocolate with 90% cocoa solids from blend mass, followed by single-origin chocolates. A high positive correlation between ABTS assay and the total polyphenol and phenolic acids’ content, as well as among the total content of polyphenols, flavonoids, and phenolic acids was found. Mineral composition analysis showed that dark chocolate is a valuable source of some elements, especially Mg, Fe, and Zn. Potentially toxic elements were not detected or below permitted limits. Moreover, it was noticed that the main volatile compound in all tested samples was acetic acid, but pyrazines were considered the most important group of chocolate odorants.

The antioxidant activities of eighteen different essential oil components have been determined using the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical-scavenging assay, the 2,2 ’-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid (ABTS) radical cation assay, and the ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) assay. The phenolic compounds, carvacrol, thymol, and eugenol, showed the best antioxidant activities, while camphor, menthol, and menthone were the least active. The structural and electronic properties of the essential oil components were assessed using density functional theory (DFT) at the B3LYP/6-311++G** level. Correlations between calculated electronic properties and antioxidant activities were generally poor, but bond-dissociation energies (BDEs) seem to correlate with DPPH radical-scavenging activities, and the ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) assay correlated with vertical ionization potentials calculated at the Hartree-Fock/6-311++G** level.

Objective: This study aimed to fractionate the antioxidant activity of the ethyl acetate leaf extract and to characterize the most active fractionsaccording to compound groups.Methods: The ethyl acetate extract was fractionated with column chromatography using a gradient elution system. Fractions were first screenedqualitatively for antioxidant activity before active fractions were quantified with respect to in vitro antioxidant activity using the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging assay and the ferric-reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) assay. The compound groups were identifiedfollowing separation by thin-layer chromatography.Results: Fraction 11 exhibited the greatest DPPH radical-scavenging activity, with an IC50 value of 6.58 μg/mL, while the fraction with the greatestantioxidant activity according to the FRAP assay was fraction 10, with a ferric ion equivalent antioxidant activity value of 1015.34 μmol/g.Conclusion: Compound group identification revealed that Fractions 10 and 11 contained flavonoids, with two common to both fractions, whilefraction 10 also contained one specific flavonoid.

This study evaluated the effect of derriobtusone A, a flavonoid isolated fromLonchocarpus obtusus, on two important pathogenic bacteria,Staphylococcus aureusandEscherichia coli, as well as its antioxidant activity and toxicity. Planktonic growth assays were performed, and the inhibition of biofilm formation was evaluated. In addition, antioxidant activity was assessed by DPPH radical scavenging assay, ferrous ion chelating assay, ferric-reducing antioxidant power assay, andβ-carotene bleaching assay. Toxicity was evaluated by the brine shrimp lethality test. Results showed that derriobtusone A completely inhibited the planktonic growth ofS. aureusat 250 and 500 μg/mL; however, it did not have the same activity onE. coli. Derriobtusone A reduced the biomass and colony-forming unit (cfu) ofS. aureusbiofilm at concentrations of 250 and 500 μg/mL. In various concentrations, it reduced the biofilm biomass ofE. coli, and, in all concentrations, it weakly reduced the cfu. Derriobtusone A showed highly efficient antioxidant ability in scavenging DPPH radical and inhibitingβ-carotene oxidation. The compound showed no lethality toArtemiasp. nauplii. In conclusion, derriobtusone A may be an effective molecule againstS. aureusand its biofilm, as well as a potential antioxidant compound with no toxicity.

Background: Skin-aging is a progressive changes in the skin combine with cumulative extrinsic factors which are mostly caused by free radicals caused by exposure to lots of free radicals molecules from pollutant, wrongly food intake, or too much sun bathing. These free radicals can be tackled by a treatment using antioxidants. Prevention of aging can be done by escalating antioxidant intake. Protocatechuic acid (PCA) and Ferulic acid (FA) have been known for their scavenging properties on free radicals and antiaging activity. Antioxidant and antiaging activity of both compounds have not been compared comprehensively before. Hence, current study was conducted to compare the potential of PCA and FA for their antioxidant and antiaging activities using various methods.Materials and Methods: Antioxidant analysis of PCA and FA was conducted using H2O2 scavenging assay, 2,2’-azinobis-3-ethylbenzo-thiazoline-6-sulfonic acid (ABTS), 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazil (DPPH), and ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP). Meanwhile, antiaging activities of PCA and FA were examined using inhibitory activities of tyrosinase, collagenase, elastase, hyaluronidase and tyrosinase.Results: IC50 of scavenging activity of ABTS were 125.18 µg/mL (PCA) and 35.55 µg/mL (FA), inhibition activity of collagenase were 126.16 µg/mL (PCA) and 52.85 µg/mL (FA) and inhibition activity of tyrosinase were 246.42 µg/mL (PCA), 253.58 µg/mL (FA).Conclusion: In conclusion, FA has better ABTS scavenging and collagenase inhibition activities compared to PCA. Meanwhile, PCA has better activity of tyrosinase inhibition than FA.Keywords: antioxidant, antiaging, ferulic acid, protocatechuic acid
