Analysis of Relation Between Lifetime Rates and Incorporation of Plutonium-239 in Atomic Production Workers Regarding Tumor and Non-Tumor Causes of Death

Purpose: The objective of the study was in quantitative assessment of the effect of internal exposure to lifetime in Mayak PA workers based on analyzing dependence of certain lifetime rates on incorporation of plutonium-239 regarding tumor and non-tumor causes of death. Material and methods: The cohort of deceased Mayak PA workers employed in1948–1958 with known Pu-239 body burden comprising 2343 individuals, of them 1739 males and 604 females, was investigated. Using regression analysis we have assessed dependence of general lifetime and lifetime after start of work as well as of proportion of individuals who did not survive until standard age in general and after start of work from incorporated Pu-239 separately for workers of different age regarding tumor and non-tumor causes of death. Statistical values were defined using Statistica software. Results: It was stated that in case of increase of plutonium-239 body burden in males and females reliably increased shortening of lifetime and lifetime after start of work was observed as well as increased proportion of individuals who did not survive until standard lifetime rate and until standard lifetime after start of work. Reliable regression equations for dependence of the studied lifetime values from radionuclide incorporation rate were obtained based on regression analysis. Generally, changes in the studied characteristics of lifetime after start of work were more evident than in general lifetime characteristics. Conclusion: Reliable dependence of shortening of lifetime and lifetime after start of work, of increased proportion of individuals who did not survive until standard lifetime and lifetime after start of work among Mayak PA workers of different gender from incorporation of plutonium-239 regarding tumor and non-tumor causes of death was stated. Dependence of lifetime after start of work on incorporated plutonium-239 was higher than of general lifetime that could be probably due to direct contact of workers with radionuclide after start of work. The results obtained indicate feasibility of using not only general lifetime but also lifetime after start of work in assessment of lifetime among workers who are in contact with production hazardous factors.

Introduction. For 1 kBq of incorporated Pu-239 proportion of males who did not survive until 65 years of general lifetime and proportion of males who did not survive 40 years after a start of work increased by 1.33 and 1.87% respectively; in females for 70 and 45 years - by 0.90 and 1.14% respectively. Conclusion. Thus, the workers’ dependence of lifetime after a start of work on incorporated Pu-239 was higher than of a general lifetime. A proportion of workers who did not survive until the standard age after the start of work was higher than the proportion of workers who did not survive until a general standard age. Dependence of decrease of lifetime rates under the study from incorporated Pu-239 in males was more significant than in females.

Abstract The purpose of this study was to produce an estimated equation for the prediction of unerupted cuspids and bicuspids for the Saudi population. In this study, dental casts of 65 Saudi subjects (37 males and 28 females) were used. The subjects’ age ranged from 18 to 25 years. The mesiodistal width of all permanent teeth was measured. The data was subjected to regression analysis. Results showed the Tanaka and Johnston equations overestimate the predicted tooth width of the un-erupted cuspids and bicuspids in Saudis. Results showed the predicted tooth width of Saudis (males and females) is closer to the 50% level of confidence in Moyer's chart. Multiple regression equations were estimated including the sex factor. Accordingly, two equations were estimated for the prediction of the tooth width of the un-erupted cuspids and bicuspids for the Saudi males and females. Based on the results, it can be concluded the 50% data is more accurate than the commonly used percentage Moyer's table (75%) when both sexes are combined. Subject. The article investigates and quantifies factors of insurance markets functioning in Russian regions, and reveals possibilities to manage them. Objectives. The purpose of the study is to substantiate regional factors that determine the specifics of regional insurance market development; to quantify them to increase the efficiency of regional insurance. Methods. The study draws on statistical methods, functional analysis, algorithm development, correlation and regression analysis. Results. I calculated coefficients of pair and multiple correlation with the indicators of insurance markets in the context of the subjects of the Russian Federation, and composed regression equations. Based on the analysis, I determined the algorithm for inverse effect of the insurance market on the economic, social, fiscal and environmental performance of the region, offered appropriate measures aimed at developing the economic potential of the region and its social sphere. Conclusions. The paper considers the case of the Republic of Khakassia, one of depressed subjects in the Siberian Federal District. The developed models can be used for other regions of Russia, given the geographical and economic features of development. The findings may help generate regional strategies for socio-economic development at the country level. The scientific contribution and the novelty of the work consist of systematizing and quantifying the factors affecting the insurance mechanisms of regional markets, and assessing the inverse effect of insurance mechanisms on integrated development of the region.

Abstract The swine industry has been constantly evolving to select animals with improved performance traits and to minimize variation in body weight (BW) in order to meet packer specifications. Therefore, understanding variation presents an opportunity for producers to find strategies that could help reduce, manage, or deal with variation of pigs in a barn. A systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted by collecting data from multiple studies and available data sets in order to develop prediction equations for coefficient of variation (CV) and standard deviation (SD) as a function of BW. Information regarding BW variation from 16 papers was recorded to provide approximately 204 data points. Together, these data included 117,268 individually weighed pigs with a sample size that ranged from 104 to 4,108 pigs. A random-effects model with study used as a random effect was developed. Observations were weighted using sample size as an estimate for precision on the analysis, where larger data sets accounted for increased accuracy in the model. Regression equations were developed using the nlme package of R to determine the relationship between BW and its variation. Polynomial regression analysis was conducted separately for each variation measurement. When CV was reported in the data set, SD was calculated and vice versa. The resulting prediction equations were: CV (%) = 20.04 – 0.135 × (BW) + 0.00043 × (BW)2, R2=0.79; SD = 0.41 + 0.150 × (BW) - 0.00041 × (BW)2, R2 = 0.95. These equations suggest that there is evidence for a decreasing quadratic relationship between mean CV of a population and BW of pigs whereby the rate of decrease is smaller as mean pig BW increases from birth to market. Conversely, the rate of increase of SD of a population of pigs is smaller as mean pig BW increases from birth to market.

Purpose of the study. To establish the relationship between neurophysiological status and the level of efficiency in young people with bruxism.Materials and methods. Two groups of 64 and 53 subjects (males and females) aged 20–35 years old with bruxism and non-bruxers were formed according to questionnaire results and physical examination. The level of efficiency was assessed by the results of sensorimotor tracking of a moving object (the ‘Smile’ model). Spectral analysis was performed for evaluation of the baseline electroencephalograms. Microsoft Excel and Statistica 10.0 programs were used for statistical data processing.Results. The level of efficiency was statistically significantly lower in the hardest test of Smile model among the individuals with bruxism (p < 0.05). The bruxers also demonstrated a significantly lower dominant frequency and maximum amplitude of alpha-rhythm (p < 0.05), and significantly higher dominant frequency of beta2 rhythm (p < 0.05). The dominant frequency and the maximum amplitude of the alpha-rhythm are parameters corresponding to significant coefficients of the regression analysis. A negative relationship was found between the degree of error during sensorimotor tracking and the frequency and amplitude of alpha-rhythm.Conclusion. Regression models present the relationship between the level of efficiency and the alpha-rhythm severity. The regression equations make it possible to determine the functional state of the subject using an electroencephalogram.

Modern dentistry requires the definition of individualized values of teleroentgenographic indicators. To solve such problems, methods of regression and correlation analysis are increasingly used, which help to establish not only the existence of various relationships between the anatomical structures of the head and the parameters of the dento-jaw system, but also allow more accurately predict the change in the contour of soft facial tissue in response to orthodontic treatment. The purpose of the study is to develop mathematical models for the determination of individual teleroentgenographic characteristics of the facial soft tissues by studying the cephalometric indices of young men and women of Ukraine with normal occlusion and balanced faces and conducting a direct stepwise regression analysis. With the use of Veraviewepocs 3D device, Morita (Japan) from 38 young men (17 to 21 years of age) and 55 young women (aged from 16 to 20 years) with occlusal close to the orthognathic bite and balanced faces received side teleroentgenograms. The cephalometric analysis was performed using OnyxCeph³™ licensed software. Cephalometric points and measurements were made according to the recommendations of Downs W. B., Holdway R. A., McNamara J., Schwarz A. M., Schmuth G. P. F., Steiner C. C. and Tweed C. H. With the help of direct stepwise regression analysis, in the licensed package “Statistica 6.0”, regression models of individual teleroentgenographic characteristics of the profile of soft facial tissues were constructed. In young men with normal occlusion close to the orthognathic bite of 19 possible models, 11 were constructed with a determination coefficient from 0.638 to 0.930, and in young women – 12 models with a determination coefficient from 0.541 to 0.927. The conducted analysis of models showed that in young men most often the regression equations included – angle N_POG, parameters of which indicate a linear interjaw relation in the anterior-posterior direction (14.0%); angle GL_SNPOG, or index of convexity of the soft tissue profile (8.8%); MAX maxillary length (7.0%), and GL_SN_S index, which defines vertical correlations in the facial profile (5.3%). The young women most often models included – the angle N_POG (12.5%); angle GL_SNPOG (7.5%); soft tissue front angle P_OR_N (6.25%); the reference angle ML_NL and the profile angle T (by 5.0%); the angle AB_NPOG, the angle NBA_PTGN, which defines the direction of development of the mandible and the distance PN_A (3.75%). Thus, in the work with the help of the method of stepwise regression with inclusion, among Ukrainians of adolescence age, based on the characteristics of teleroentgenographic indicators, reliable models of individual teleroentgenographic characteristics of the profile of soft facial tissues were developed and analyzed.

The purpose of the current study was to examine the attitudes of Nigerians towards physically challenged persons. The population of the study constituted civil servants. A total of two hundred and twenty participants comprising males and females were randomly selected from the Enugu and Kogi states civil service as the research participants. Data for the study was generated using three research instruments, including the 24-item Scale of Attitude Toward Disabled Persons (SADP), The Religious commitment inventory (RCI-10), and Rosenbergs self-esteem scale (R-SES). The multiple regression analysis results showed that religious commitment significantly predicted attitude towards physically challenged persons. However, the findings also found no significant influence of self-esteem on attitude towards the physically challenged. It is recommended that more research be conducted to fully understand the determinants of attitudes towards the physically challenged in society.

In response to concerns that some of the most methodologically rigorous predictive studies of criminal offender characteristics may yet be less generalizable and applicable than advertised or assumed, this research first tests how well seven regression analysis models (represented by 28 equations) predict characteristics across three conditions: familiar cases (used to create the regressions), less familiar cases (native to the sample used to create the regressions) and foreign cases (from a similar but novel sample). Here a linear trend shows overfitting of the models to their own sample: a drop-off in prediction accuracy relative to simple mean-based prediction as cases become more foreign (ηp 2 = .646). In response to hopes that subjective input from expert police investigators could be integrated into the models to correct for this overfitting bias, this research also tests an algorithm combining expert ratings with the regression equations. Here moderate and significant improvement in novel-case prediction is observed overall (p = .036, r = .44) and equations for all twelve expert participants are shown to improve prediction to varying degrees. These results suggest that current best methods would perform poorly in the field, but can be improved by expert insight.

We have developed normal standards for the Bruce exercise (EX) protocol since a review of 875 studies in patients with congenital or acquired heart disease showed that only 5.1% achieved the predicted 50th percentile for EX time of the standards reported by Cumming, Everatt, and Hastman (Am. J Cardiol 41:69, 1978). Our data are based on 160 males and 103 females, age 4–18 years who met the following criteria: trivial or no heart disease, maximal effort, maximal EX heart rate (HR) > 180 beats/min, and normal resting and EX ECG without arrhythmia. The ECG was monitored continuously and HR computed from the ECG and the end of each minute of EX. Comparison with the predicted data of Cumming et al. for each age group by stage showed essentially identical submaximal EX heart rates but slightly lower maximal HR (–2%), which averaged 197 beats per minute in males and females. EX times were on average 15% lower than the predicted 50th percentile for most age groups in males and females. We developed regression equations, which predict exercise time from age and body size or age, body size and 2nd stage exercise heart rate. They better reflect the capabilities of untrained, asymptomatic children and adolescents seen in our laboratory in the 1990s than the Canadian data of 1978.

Peak expiratory ow rate (PEFR) measurement is one of the commonly used methods for assessing lung function in general practice<br />consultations. e reference values for use by this method are mainly from Caucasian populations; data for African populations are limited. e<br />existence of ethnic and racial dierences in lung function necessitates further generation of PEFR reference values for use in African populations.<br />Objective. To generate equations for predicting PEFR in a Ugandan population.<br />Methods. e PEFR study was cross-sectional and based in rural south-western Uganda. Participants were aged 15 years or more, without respiratory<br />symptoms and were residents of the study area. Multiple regression equations for predicting PEFR were tted separately for males and females. e<br />model used for PEFR prediction was: logePEFR = intercept + a(age, y) + b(logeage) + c(1/height in cm), where a, b and c are the regression coecients.<br />Results. e eligible study population consisted of 774 males and 781 females. Median height was 164 cm (males) and 155 cm (females).<br />e majority of participants had never smoked (males 76.7%; females 98.3%). e equation which gave the best t for males was<br />logePEFR = 6.188 – 0.019age + 0.557logeage – 199.945/height and for females: logePEFR = 5.948 – 0.014 age + 0.317logeage – 85.147/height.<br />Conclusion. e curvilinear model obtained takes into consideration the changing trends of PEFR with increasing age from adolescence<br />to old age. It provides PEFR prediction equations that can be applied in East African populations.</p>
