Legitimacy is critical to the formation and expansion of nascent fields because it lends credibility and recognizability to once overlooked actors and practices. At the same time, legitimacy can be a double-edged sword precisely because it facilitates field growth, attracting actors with discrepant practices that may lead to factionalization and undermine the coherence of the field’s collective identity. In this paper, we investigate how organizations can mitigate the downside of legitimation by eliciting emotions that align increasingly discrepant actors and celebrate an inclusive collective identity. We leverage fieldwork and computational text analysis to examine the relationship between legitimation, collective identity coherence, and emotions in the context of the Makers, a nascent field of do-it-yourself hobbyists and technology hackers. In our quantitative analysis we show that legitimation was associated with increased field heterogeneity, but that collective events countered the diluting effects of legitimation. In the qualitative analysis of our interview data we demonstrate that activities at these events—demonstrations and hands-on experiences—elicited emotional contagion and empathy among actors. These emotions reconciled tensions among increasingly heterogeneous actors and bolstered the coherence of the Maker collective identity. We conclude by discussing our contribution to research on legitimacy, collective identity, and field-configuring events.

In this paper we present a sociolinguistic research conducted on Italian schoolchildren learning English as LS. Following on from renowned researchers, we focused on a less studied population, that is school-aged monolingual children. Our participants consist in 15 students of a 4th grade class at a primary school in Pavia, all aged around 9 y.o, 7 boys and 8 girls. All children do not present any recorded cognitive problems and they are all Italian L1 speakers with little or no use of other languages at home, and English learnt as LS since the beginning of primary school at age 6. We recorded all children performing a task of re-narration of a “Tom & Jerry” cartoon, firstly in Italian and then, after one week, in English. The corpus consist of about 2h 45’ of recordings, transcribed and annotated in ELAN. Lexical knowledge in English was also tested through a questionnaire before the recordings. The results were analyzed both qualitatively and, partly, quantitatively. During qualitative analysis, two elements were observed: (1) general tendencies in speakers general behavior and (2) differences in the relationship between syntactic-conversational system and gesture system in relation to L1/L2. The quantitative analysis show a difference in the use of beats gestures and iconic ones between L1 and LS, but also between boys and girls.

AbstractContent or text analysis is one of the most common evaluation methods employed in qualitative research. Despite its wide application, however, a clear structure of how such evaluation should be conducted is often lacking due to the complexity of qualitative data. As a consequence, highly differentiated category systems with small-step subdivisions of categories and sub-categories are often used, leading to a loss of context both among categories and for the content as a whole. The aim of this paper is to describe the Phenomena-centered Text Analysis (PTA) as a novel form of qualitative text analysis, which takes these shortcomings into account by focusing on text-inherent phenomena. These phenomena are identified in two preceding quantitative analysis steps that identifying overlapping coding for subsequently qualitative analysis. We explain the structured code- and context-based approach of this new method and demonstrate its application with an empirical example. The PTA contributes to an increasing demand of qualitative methods especially for small-scale projects that need a structured kind of qualitative data analysis.

Consumer is one of the influential factors in marketing. The study was conducted to analyze the increase in marketing opportunities based on consumer criteria for hydroponic vegetable producers in Surabaya. The research was carried out in Surabaya from Mei to June 2018. This type of research is observational analysis with survey methods on three producers about the relationship between producers and consumers according to their respective producers. Data were analyzed with AHP (Analysis Hierarchy Process) and the process used Expert Choice 2000. Data were examined using descriptive or qualitative analysis and quantitative analysis. Quantitative analysis includes a scale of trust and commitment measurement. The distribution of hydroponics vegetables at “Kebunsayur Surabaya” prioritizes ‘restaurant’ and ‘hotel’, “JawaRa Farm” prioritizes ‘kale suppliers’ and “One STOP Hydroponics” prioritizes ‘individual customers’ (vegetable displays).

In this research paper, we have tried to find out the relationship between the growth rate of garment industry and the macroeconomic variables. And for this we have conducted three types of analysis. First one is quantitative analysis; a second one is qualitative analysis, and the last one is a beta concept. Quantitative analysis has covered graphical presentation and multiple regression analysis. The graphical presentation just provides an overall idea about the relationship of variables, but it is an abstract concept. In case of regression analysis, we have used one dependent variable that is the growth rate of garment industry and seven independent variables those are growth rate of real GDP, the unemployment rate, inflation rate, interest rate, level of stock market, exchange rate. And stata-10 software has been used to run the regression model. After running the programmed it is seen that there have some econometric problems. By using the logarithm, we have solved those problems. A multiple regression analysis has been made to know the extent to which these variables affect the garment export growth rate. From that analysis, it has been found that about 70% variations in the growth rate of garments export can be defined by these variables. Then an equation for predicting future garments export has been constructed. Qualitative analysis has encompassed economic and political issues. After this, for knowing the individual effect of the variables, a beta concept has been employed and from that analysis it has been found that no variable affect garments export to a large extent. At the end of the analysis it can be said that, individual effect of the macroeconomic variables on the growth rate of garments export is not much but when they are combined, they can influence the garments export growth rate. As they are also related with each other which means change in one macroeconomic variable may change all the other variables. Therefore, a combined effect always remains. So, we can say that macroeconomic variables influence the garment industry of our country but not to a great extent. JEL Classification Code: E60, M10, L67, O14

This study examines the relationship between online interaction and fear of cyberbullying. A mixed method approach is adopted to explore not only the statistical correlation between them, but also the qualitative meaning behind this correlation. The quantitative analysis reveals a positive correlation between these two constructs, suggesting a higher level of fear of cyberbullying is associated with more frequent online interactions. Although seemingly fear of cyberbullying does not reduce online interaction, the qualitative analysis reveals how fear of cyberbullying might still impact online interaction.

Whitsleblowing is one of the positive practices in organizations that are able to raise the level of integrity among the members of an organization. However, the roles of whistleblowing also inevitably invites a response, especially among members of the organization itself. This is because such practices are viewed as one factor that may be detrimental to the organization in addition to revealing the reporter (whistleblower) to some external threats and intimidation of discrimination within the organization. This paper is an attempt to examine the relationship between perceptions of members of the Royal Malaysian Police (RMP) Contingent of Perak through the role of whistleblowing practices to increase the perception of the integrity of the members. Next, identify the purpose of the whistleblowing and its effect on the integrity of the members of the organization. This study used a descriptive quantitative analysis to identify patterns of relationship that exists between the perception of whistleblowing practices with perceptions of increased integrity based on three basic variables of demographic factors, response to whistleblowing and the impact of making the report. The results showed that members of the Perak’s police have a positive perception of whistleblowing practices which are seen to be done in improving the integrity of the members. Keywords: whistleblowing, perception, RMP members, culture, integrity, organization, influence.
