This review deals with the significance of plant seed proteins. Plant seed proteins are known to provide various beneficial activities like antimicrobial, antihypertensive, antiviral and antioxidant. They are essential source of amino acids; act as a source of nutrition booster. Present review elaborates on extraction of proteins and hydrolysis with their advantages and disadvantages, their nutritional property, health benefits and challenges associated with the peptides.

Intestinal microbiota interacts with other systems, especially the immune system, which is responsible for protecting the body by recognizing “stranger” (pathogen associated molecular patterns-PAMPs) and “danger” (damage-associated molecular patterns-DAMPs) molecular motifs. In this manner, it plays an important role in the pathogenesis of various diseases and health. Despite the use of probiotics that modulate the intestinal microbiota in providing health benefits and in the treatment of diseases, there are some possible concerns about the possibility of developing adverse effects, especially in people with suppressed immune systems. Since probiotics provide health benefits with bioactive compounds, studies are carried out on the use of products containing non-living probiotic microorganisms (paraprobiotics) and/or their metabolites (postbiotics) instead of probiotic products. It is even reported that these microbial compounds have more immunomodulatory activities than living microorganisms via some possible mechanism and eliminates some disadvantages of probiotics. Considering the increasing use of functional foods in health and disease, further studies are needed with respect to the benefits and advantages of parabiotic and/or postbiotic use in the food and pharmaceutical industry as well as immune system modulation. Although probiotics have been extensive studied for a long time, it seems that postbiotics are promising tools for future research and applications according to the recent literature. This review aimed to evaluate the interaction of probiotics and postbiotics with the immune systems and also their advantages and disadvantages in the area of food-pharmaceutical industry and immune system modulation.

Cowpea (Vigna unguiculata) is among the pulse’s species of greatest economic and social importance. This legume is strategic for the food security and health of millions of people in the world. Cowpea is rich in nutraceuticals compounds such as dietary fibre, antioxidants and polyunsaturated fatty acids and polyphenols, whose health benefits and use in the food industry have been extensively studied. However, research on the identification of functional proteins from cowpea, their metabolic functions and applications in the food, health and other industries are still scarce. In this chapter, a critical review of the most recent and important research about functional cowpea proteins. We objective was identify and systematize information about the nature and functions of these proteins, as well as their use and applications in food, health and other industries. Cowpea seed proteins are highly versatile and offer direct health benefits such as reducing the incidence of cardiovascular disease and some types of cancer. The proteins of cowpea are also used in material science for the development of new technologies such as development of special fabrics for protection against ultraviolet rays and microencapsulation of ascorbic acid.

While kept at the Rockefeller Museum in East Jerusalem, many Dead Sea Scroll fragments were exposed to castor oil by the original team of editors in the course of cleaning the parchments. Castor oil must be regarded as a serious contaminant in relation to radiocarbon dating. If modern castor oil is present and is not removed prior to dating, the 14C dates will be skewed artificially towards modern values. In Rasmussen et al. (2001), it was shown that the standard AAA pretreatment procedure used in the 2 previous studies dating Dead Sea Scroll samples (Bonani et al. 1992; Jull et al. 1995) is not capable of removing castor oil from parchment samples. In the present work, we show that it is unlikely that castor oil reacts with the amino acids of the parchment proteins, a finding which leaves open the possibility of devising a cleaning method that can effectively remove castor oil. We then present 3 different pretreatment protocols designed to effectively remove castor oil from parchment samples. These involve 3 different cleaning techniques: extraction with supercritical CO2, ultrasound cleaning, and Soxhlet extraction—each with their own advantages and disadvantages. Our data show that the protocol involving Soxhlet extraction is the best suited for the purpose of decontaminating the Dead Sea Scrolls, and we recommend that this protocol be used in further attempts to 14C date the Dead Sea Scrolls. If such an attempt is decided on by the proper authorities, we propose a list of Scroll texts, which we suggest be redated in order to validate the 14C dates done earlier by Bonani et al. (1992) and Jull et al. (1995).

Web map services, such as Google Maps and MapQuest, are among the most popular sites on the Internet. One can easily access these services through a Web browser on a personal computer or mobile device. The high accessibility and efficiency offered by these sites is possible, in part, by the use of standard image formats. The present review is a description of the most common image formats available from web map servers nowadays, as well as other formats with great possibilities for the future. We describe raster and vector formats and highlight advantages and disadvantages in each case. We also refer to protocols and image formats supported by the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) standards.


In recent years the X-ray crystallographers have made remarkable advances in the interpretation of protein structure, and it is becoming more and more evident that a stage has been reached when their views need to be reconciled with data obtained from accurate amino-acid analysis of the proteins concerned. In all too many cases these data are, unfortunately, not yet available, and the reason why the analyst cannot supply them at short notice is due not so much to the com­plexity of the problem—which he has never sought to minimize—but to the fact that many of the more important methods of analysis in current use are an inheritance from an earlier period when such accuracy as is now demanded would have been considered almost impossible of achievement. From about 1840 until 1900, following the lead given by Liebig and later by Ritthausen, the attention of protein chemists was centred chiefly on the prepara­tion and characterization of various animal and seed proteins; as substances of physiological interest their enzymic digestion products were studied in elaborate detail by Kühne, but little attention was paid to the ultimate decomposition products, the amino-acids, in spite of the fact that Ritthausen as early as 1872 had pointed out that the proportions in which these occur might be characteristic of the protein concerned. The enunciation by Hofmeister and Fischer of the peptide hypothesis in 1901 emphasized for the first time the fundamental importance of the amino-acids, and a most fruitful period followed in which attention became almost exclusively focused on these products. Under the inspiring leadership of Fischer himself great improvements were effected in the separation and identification of the amino-acids, so that by about 1915 reasonably good analyses were available for most of the better-known proteins. Though far from complete, the analytical data showed quite clearly that proteins could differ widely in composition, and in many cases it was possible to correlate composition with nutritive value. Such an aim was, indeed, the incentive behind much of the work of this period.

The oceans have been the Earth’s most valuable source of food. They have now also become a valuable and versatile source of bioactive compounds. The significance of marine organisms as a natural source of new substances that may contribute to the food sector and the overall health of humans are expanding. This review is an update on the recent studies of functional seafood compounds (chitin and chitosan, pigments from algae, fish lipids and omega-3 fatty acids, essential amino acids and bioactive proteins/peptides, polysaccharides, phenolic compounds, and minerals) focusing on their potential use as nutraceuticals and health benefits.

Probiotics are live microorganism possessing significance health benefits ranging from the effect on immunological function, protection against pathogenic microorganism to treatment of wide variety of diseases including cancer and tumour. Probiotics are simple, cost effective, intrinsic and receptive alternative for achieving health benefits. The present review article focuses on the mechanism and application of probiotics in different diseases/disorders. Mechanism of probiotics and different formulations for oral delivery of probiotics have been discussed in detail. Different patents on probiotics for oral delivery have also been tabulated. Overall the aim of the study was to underline the input of oral delivery of probiotics for human health and better lifestyle.
