This article derives from my participation in the II Congress of Childhood Studies: Politicizations and Aesthetics, held in September 2019, at UERJ/Maracanã. My speech entitled Childhoods, Culture and Intergenerational Relations in everyday life, was delivered in the conference “The ethnic-racial issue and the generational issue in childhood” having at its core extreme burning issues in Childhood Studies: both ethnic-racial and generational issues, arguing how these intersecting points (Collins, 2017) have effects on the daily life of Brazilian children, especially children from the popular classes who live in the outskirts of the big cities, such as the slums and urban borders of the state of Rio de Janeiro. In this pre-text, I chose to speak of this Other, named the child from the popular classes, the one who lives in the outskirts, in slums and popular areas. Those who, despite being infants deprived of speech, dare to speak among themselves and are spoken of by us, teachers and researchers of childhood. Considering our proposal of establishing conversation as a device for an encounter (Deleuze, 1998), I tried to speak of this Other, using my notes from the day of the conference, and the voices of authors with whom I dialogue in my studies, researches and daily work in different territories of the city (Tavares, 2019), understanding the contemporary city as a place of encounters, both good and bad. Above all, the city is a place of intergenerational meetings where the co-existence is possible.

To better understand, on the one hand, the remarkable and largely commendable transformation that Singapore has undergone over the last century and, on the other hand, its vulnerability, answers should be sought to the following two questions. Does not the relentless overhaul of Singaporean living space, nearly always considered as a fait accompli, yet always subject to being revised by the state, lead to territorial alienation among the city state’s citizens and permanent residents? Just as classical Athens and even classical Rome came to depend on a constant and everincreasing supply of foreign labour, Singapore has reached a point where its dependence on a modern and imported form of lumpenproletariat has become apparently irreversible. Is this sustainable?

Abstract The Casa da Nostalgia, or “Nostalgic house,” in the Taipa area of the special administrative region of Macau, is a museum devoted to temporary exhibitions reconstructing everyday life in the city, especially in the epoch of Portuguese ruling. Just opposite the museum, on the other side of a large pond, a giant casino, the Venetian Macau, reproduces Venice both with its external architecture and its interior design. The article analyzes these two urban settings in order to develop a semiotic understanding of as many ways of symbolically reconstructing cities. On the one hand, cities can be reconstructed in a nostalgic form; the essay inquires on the origin and the consequences of urban nostalgia; on the other hand, cities can be reconstructed as ersatz. The article further investigates the dialectics between predominantly temporal or prevailingly spatial urban reconstructions, with reference to the socio-cultural dynamics that have changed Macau in the last decades. The article concludes with the methodological suggestion that the study of urban re-constructions requires the combined efforts of several disciplines, jointly investigating why, how, but also to what effect cities are re-built.

Solidarity refers not only to the socio-political sphere, but also to the sphere of intra-family relations. Solidarity and support of generations in everyday life is one of the natural traditions of inter-generational and intra-generational relationships. Solidarity is a structure of behavior inherited by individuals, fixed in the natural-historical process of succession of generations. The purpose of the article is to analyze the problems and trends in traditional relations of intra-family solidarity and mutual assistance of generations in everyday life. Sociological materials show that the modern young generation is, for the most part, completely or mostly independent in financial and economic terms. There is a noticeable trend that today's youth are noticeably less helpful in everyday life to older generations than older generations are helping young people. On the one hand, young people are largely separated from the parental family, become independent, less and less help parents in everyday life. On the other hand, a large part of parents finds themselves in a more difficult financial and economic situation and do not have real opportunities to help their children. It is necessary to recognize the paramount importance of the care of society and the state, especially in relation to two social groups - students and older people experiencing financial difficulties and in need of daily assistance. The manifestation of care on the part of society and the state, systematic targeted support for the most financially vulnerable groups of the population in its own way will support the modern meanings of traditional relations of solidarity and mutual assistance of generations in everyday life.

The review provides a detailed analysis of the research of doctor of science S.G. Sizov, dedicated to the daily life of Omsk during the Civil war. It is noted that the author, using archival materials and a large volume of various periodicals, was able to give a detailed picture of everyday life in Omsk during one of the most difficult periods in the history of Russia in the twentieth century, when the city became the White capital of Russia. Despite some omissions, according to the reviewer, the monograph makes a valuable contribution to the study of everyday life not only in Omsk, but throughout Russia during the social cataclysm of 1917-1920.

AbstractThe paper studies the influence of industrial pollution on bio-ecological characteristics of the one-year shoot of Robinia pseudoacacia L. in the conditions of the city of Dnipro, Ukraine. It analyses the state of biometric parameters of the shoot and anatomic indices of the stem of the studied species exposed to toxic gases. It was found that there are adaptive changes in the histological structure of the stem of R. pseudoacacia under the conditions of technogenesis. The study revealed that bio-ecological characteristics of the black locust are highly resistant to industrial emissions with big shares of SO2 and NO2. It was suggested to use R. pseudoacacia for greening of the technogenic territories.

The article offers the previously unpublished memoirs of eleven Leningrad residents who were children during the German blockade of the city. All of them were collected in 1998-1999 by Nina Aleksandrovna Koroleva, and are today kept in her collection in the Central State Archive of the Udmurt Republic. After the war, Nina Aleksandrovna came to live in Udmurtia, where she started to record memories about wartime. Conventionally, her documents can be divided into two groups. The first includes the memories of those who were evacuated to Udmurtia during the Great Patriotic War. The second group consists of memories of those who ended up in the republic after the end of the war. All documents are preserved in the author's edition. The memoirs reflect childhood impressions of the siege period. Their authors share their feelings from the beginning of the blockade, and report details of their daily life during the siege; they also reveal the coping strategies of the respective families. Descriptions of the labor conducted by children invite for conclusions about their contribution to the Soviet victory. Very emotional are the reports about the lifting of the blockade. Some memoirs contain details of the evacuation from Leningrad to the mainland. From the perspective of the history of everyday life, the publication of these memoirs expands our knowledge about the Great Patriotic War and, in particular, about the blockade of Leningrad.

The research conducted with 68 women living in Bozova, Eyyübiye and Harran countries of Şanlıurfa and with 9 herbalists who work in the city centre of Şanlıurfa. All of the interviewed women, except for one, are married; the one who is not married is 23 years old and newly divorced. Most of the women experienced prearranged marriages or they married by taking their family’s blessing. Women who are not married by prearranged marriages are married to their relatives. Women’s age vary between 18- 73. Except 2 of these 9 women interviewed in the scope of the research live on the countryside. In our research, the wild rue, which is commonly used in daily life in Bozova, in Eyyübiye and in Harran of Şanlıurfa, is examined. The questions of which purposes it is being used and the beliefs, rituals and practices which developed around the wild rue are analysed. In our research, analysing the practices and rituals developed around the wild rue is important since it shows plant’s field of application in a culture. ÖzetAraştırma Şanlıurfa iline bağlı Bozova, Eyyübiye ve Harran ilçelerinde yaşayan 68 kadın ve Şanlıurfa ili merkezinde aktarlık yapan 9 aktarla gerçekleştirilmiştir. Görüşme yapılan kadınların 1’i hariç hepsi evlidir, evli olmayan 1 kadın ise 23 yaşında ve henüz boşanmıştır. Kadınların büyük bölümü görücü usulü ve aile onayıyla evlenmişlerdir. Görücü usulü dışında, kendi aralarında anlaşarak evlenenlerin eşleri ise akrabalarıdır. Kadınların yaşları 18-73 arasında değişmektedir. Araştırma kapsamında görüşülen kadınların 2’si hariç hepsi ilçelerde yaşamaktadır. Çalışmamızda, Şanlıurfa ili Bozova, Eyyübiye ve Harran ilçelerinde günlük hayatta sıklıkla kullanılan üzerlik bitkisinin hangi amaçlarla kullanıldığı, üzerlik bitkisi etrafında gelişen inanç, ritüel ve uygulamaların neler olduğu değerlendirilmiştir. Çalışmamızda üzerlik bitkisi etrafında gelişmiş pratikler ve ritüellerin incelenmesi kültür içindeki bir uygulamanın yerini göstermesi açısından önemlidir.

While much has been said about the historicity of the Kashmir conflict or about how individuals and communities have resisted occupation and demanded the right to self-determination, much less has been said about nature of everyday life under these conditions. This article offers a glimpse of life in the working-class neighbourhood of Maisuma, located in the central area of the city of Srinagar, and its engagement with the political movement for azadi (freedom). I argue that the predicament of ‘double interminability’ characterises life in Maisuma—the interminable violence by the state on the one hand and simultaneously the constant call of labouring for azadi by the movement on the other, since the terms of peace are unacceptable.

The article examines the cult of the bacteriologist, the discoverer of the plague bacillus Alexandre Yersin (1863–1943) in modern Vietnam. The cult of Yersin developed in the place of his burial near the city of Nha Trang in the south of Vietnam, and Yersin is worshiped there both as a rural guardian spirit in the Vietnamese folk religion (thành hoàng), and as a bodhisattva in Mahayana Buddhism, although he was not a Buddhist. One of the Buddhist temples in which he is worshiped was previously his office. Meanwhile, Buddhist cult is closely related to the popular veneration of the scientist. Worship of Yersin as a guardian spirit takes place at his grave. An important feature of the cult is that the popular veneration of Yersin was supported by the state: in 2013, a biography of Yersin was published in which his merits are referred as a basis for honoring him as the patron spirit of the area. In addition, secular ceremonies in honor of Yersin contain elements of religious practices rooted in the Vietnamese belief in the existence of the spirits of the dead and their active influence on the daily life of living people. I consider the veneration of Yersin as a new syncretic cult of post-secular Vietnam which give evidence of the vitality of traditional beliefs and their ability to develop in changing social conditions.
