Aedes albopictus tends to proliferate in small, often man-made bodies of water, largely present in urban private areas. For this reason, education and community participation are considered crucial for source reduction and mosquito control. In the current study, we tried to relate for the first time in Greece, the effectiveness of resident education in an urban area with the number of breeding sites based on previous KAP (knowledge, attitudes and practices) studies. Our study examines the relationship between mosquito breeding sources and socioeconomic or demographic characteristics of different households in a Greek municipality and evaluates efficacy of resident education. The results revealed that only a minority of residents knew where mosquitoes breed (18.6%) and only 46% felt that residents had any responsibility for managing breeding habitat. Our findings strongly suggest that only the presence of scientific staff inspecting possible habitats in their properties, could be enough to stimulate practices towards source reduction. However, educational interventions alone with printed education material cannot enhance significant community participation and source reduction.

Until early 1998 the presence of Aedes albopictus had never been detected in Argentina. During April of the same year, few individuals of this species were recorded in 33 breeding sites found in 25 out of 161 inspected houses in the city of Eldorado, Province of Misiones. The homogeneous spatial distribution of the proliferation foci suggests the existence of a generalized infestation in this locality during the study period.

Malaria is a worldwide disease that causes a high number of deaths. It is caused by the bite of the Anopholes mosquito infected by the parasitic protozoan of the genus Plasmodium. The purpose of this article is to show the numbers of confirmed cases of malaria in Brazil, regarding the years of confirmation, the age group and the notification region, between the years 2011 to 2015. Data taken from the SUS IT department, DATASUS and from articles. There was a decline in the number of the period cited, people between the age group of 20 to 39 years, followed by the group between 49 and 59 years, the largest number of cases occurred with male people, the largest number of cases occurred with people of white race followed by browns, the highest number of cases per schooling is unknown where schooling is known, the highest numbers are with people from complete high school, followed by people with complete higher education, most cases occurred in an urban area , the southeastern region has the highest number of confirmed cases of malaria in the period, the highest number of cases occurred in the state of Rondônia. It is concluded that campaigns had an influence on society and collaborated with the reduction of the number of communicable diseases like malaria. Men work in areas with a higher risk of contamination and in places of vector proliferation, so they are more exposed to areas of mosquito proliferation and contagion. In Brazil the majority of the population is recognized as being white and brown, respectively, so the numbers show these ethnicities as the most infected. The mosquito seems to proliferate more easily in places where there have been man-made changes. The urban environment, as it is an extremely modified place, causes a greater number of cases due to the greater availability of breeding sites. It is believed that for this reason the southeastern region has a greater number of cases and because it is also one of the regions of the country that has suffered the most changes by man. The opening of highways and the increase in settlements facilitate contact between mosquitoes and humans. The state of Rondônia has a large number of settlements and deforestation to accommodate progress.

Pengendalian tempat perindukan nyamuk Ae. aegypti lebih banyak dititikberatkan pada penutupan dan abatisasi bak mandi serta penguburan barang-barang bekas di sekitar rumah penduduk yang berpeluang sebagai penampung air hujan, sementara penampung air lainnya belum mendapat perhatian yang lebih memadai, padahal peluang untuk dijadikan sebagai habitat Ae. aegypti cukup besar. Tujuan penelitian ini yaitu untuk menganalisis hubungan tempat perindukan dengan kepadatan larva dan membandingkan kepadatan populasi larva pada setiap tempat perindukan nyamuk Ae. aegypti. Jenis penelitian kuantitatif dengan pendekatan cross sectional dan analisa uji chi square yang dilaksanakan di wilayah kerja Puskesmas Kalumata Kota Ternate. Hasil penelitian menunjukan bahwa ada hubungan antara tempat perindukan nyamuk dengan kepadatan larva berdasarkan karakteristik jenis, warna, bahan, letak dan kondisi. Kesimpulannya yaitu terdapat hubungan antara tempat perindukan dengan kepadatan larva Ae.aegypti sebagai vektor penyakit demam berdarah dengue.Kata kunci: Identifikasi, tempat penampungan air, survey jentik.  AbstractDengue hemorrhagic fever is a disease caused by mosquitoes species Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus as primary vectors. Control of breeding sites for Ae mosquitoes. aegypti is more focused on the closure and abatement of bathtubs and the burial of used goods around people's homes that have the opportunity to collect rainwater, while other water reservoirs have not received more adequate attention, even though the opportunity to be used as Ae habitat. aegypti is quite large. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between breeding sites with larval density and compare larval population densities at each breeding site of the Ae mosquito. aegypti. Type of quantitative research method with cross sectional approach and analysis of chi square test conducted in the working area of Kalumata Health Center, Ternate City. The results showed that there was a relationship between mosquito breeding sites and larval density based on the characteristics of the species, color, material, location and condition. The conclusion is that there is a relationship between breeding sites and the density of Ae.aegypti larvae as a vector of dengue hemorrhagic fever.Keywords: Identification, water reservoir, larva survey.

Bacterial species able to produce proteins that are toxic against insects have been discovered at the beginning of the last century. However, up to date only two of them have been used as pesticides in mosquito control strategies targeting larval breeding sites: Bacillus thuringensis var. israelensis and Lysinibacillus sphaericus. Aiming to expand the arsenal of biopesticides, bacterial cultures from 44 soil samples were assayed for their ability to kill larvae of Aedes albopictus. A method to select, grow and test the larvicidal capability of spore-forming bacteria from each soil sample was developed. This allowed identifying 13 soil samples containing strains capable of killing Ae. albopictus larvae. Among the active isolates, one strain with high toxicity was identified as Brevibacillus laterosporus by 16S rRNA gene sequencing and by morphological characterization using transmission electron microscopy. The new isolate showed a larvicidal activity significantly higher than the B. laterosporus LMG 15441 reference strain. Its genome was phylogenomically characterized and compared to the available Brevibacillus genomes. Thus, the new isolate can be considered as a candidate adjuvant to biopesticides formulations that would help preventing the insurgence of resistance.

Objectives: The elimination of key breeding sites of dengue vector is applied worldwide to control the vector density under the critical epidemic threshold. This study aimed to identify key breeding sites of Aedes mosquitos and associated factors in Huaylau village, Pakse city, Champasack province in Laos in 2019. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study, combining of immature stage survey of Aedes mosquitoes in all water and discarded containers and the community’s knowledge and practices on the prevention of dengue fever in all 240 households in Huaylau village. Multivariate logistic regression was applied to identify factors associated with the absence of Aedes larvae and pupae in the village. Statistical significance was set at a p-value less than 0.05. Results: Among the 720 water and discarded containers surveyed, the study found 654 Aedes larvae and pupae; of which 94.6% were immature Aedes aegypti. Key breeding sites of Aedes aegypti included water jars (34.2%), plastic drums (30.7%), tanks < 500 litter (14.7%), and discarded containers (12.6%), while that of all Aedes albopictus was discarded containers. The community’s better practices on the prevention of dengue fever contributed to the increased odds of the absence of Aedes larvae ad pupae by 1.612 (95%CI: 1.218-2.134, p<0.01), and the cleanliness of the house were associated with the increased odds of 4.072 of the absent Aedes larvae and pupae in the participated households (95%CI: 1.589-10.434, p<0.01). Conclusions: Aedes aegypti mosquitoes in the Huaylau village laid their eggs in various breeding sites, including water containers and discarded containers while discarded containers were the only key breeding site of Aedes albopictus. Better practices on dengue prevention and better hygiene conditions of the houses contributed to the absence of Aedes larvae and pupae. Special attention should be paid to the clearance of all discarded containers and education of the community people to cover water containers in the village. Aedes albopictus were reared in different containers: a tree hole, a bamboo stump and an auto tire. The total times from egg hatching to adult emergence were of 19.6,27.3 and 37.5 days, respectively, according to the container. The first, second and third-instar larvae presented growth periods with highly similar durations. The fourth-instar larvae was longer than the others stages. The pupation time was longer than the fourth-instar larvae growth period. The temperature of the breeding sites studied, which was of 18° C to 22° C on average, was also taken into consideration. The mortality of the immature stages was analysed and compared as between the experimental groups; it was lower in the natural containers than in the discarded tire. The average wing length of adult females emerging from tree hole was significantly larger (p < 0.05) than that of those emerging from the tire.

Abstract Alocasia macrorrhizos (L.) G.Don grows and proliferates in shaded areas in several forest fragments in urban zones. The adult plant has axils that accumulate rain water (phytotelmata) and serve as breeding sites for several families of aquatic insects. The objective of this study was to determine the composition of the entomofauna associated with water accumulations in axils of A. macrorrhizos in urban areas of Manaus, Brazil. Individuals of A. macrorrhizos were sampled in five forest fragments, between April/2005 and March/2007 in urban areas of Manaus, totaling 184 sampling units. A manual suction hose was used for the removal of entomofauna. A total of 1,941 immatures of Diptera were collected representing the following families: Culicidae (96.5%), Chironomidae (2%), Psychodidae (0.7%), Ephydridae (0.7%) and Corethrellidae (0.1%). Five Culicidae species were identified: Wyeomyia melanocephala Dyar & Knab, 1906 (91.7%), Wy. ypsipola Dyar, 1922 (4.3%), Aedes albopictus (Skuse, 1894) (2.3%), Ae. aegypti (Linnaeus, 1762) (1.5%) and Johnbelkinia longipes (Fabricius, 1805) (0.1%). The members of Culicidae were the most abundant, confirming the importance of this group in communities associated with phytotelmata, with a positive relation to the volume of water (p < 0.05). The occurrence of Ae. aegypti and Ae. albopictus in axils of A. macrorrhizos demonstrates the potential of this Araceae as a breeding site of these medically important species. However, the real contribution of this Araceae in the maintenance and dispersion of populations of these two species of mosquitoes throughout the year should be further studied.
