Increasing availability and quality of actual, as opposed to scheduled, open transport data offers new possibilities for capturing the spatiotemporal dynamics of railway and other networks of social infrastructure. One way to describe such complex phenomena is in terms of stochastic processes. At its core, a stochastic model is domain-agnostic and algorithms discussed here have been successfully used in other applications, including Google’s PageRank citation ranking. Our key assumption is that train routes constitute meaningful sequences analogous to sentences of literary text. A corpus of routes is thus susceptible to the same analytic tool-set as a corpus of sentences. With our experiment in Switzerland, we introduce a method for building Markov Chains from aggregated daily streams of railway traffic data. The stationary distributions under normal and perturbed conditions are used to define systemic risk measures with non-evident, valuable information about railway infrastructure.

In time of rapid economic and technological change and turmoil, no one can manage business successfully, just because they think they are ‘smart’. In order to successfully manage organizations in the era of dramatic change, in this case ŽICG (Railway infrastructure of Montenegro), it is no longer sufficient to master the classical management process, but also to master the overall quality of management process. In order to achieve the best possible business results in the Railway Infrastructure of Montenegro, the theoretical and practical knowledge on which the management process is based, starting from planning (goal setting, determining ways to achieve goals, allocating required resources), organizing (a division of labor, delegation of authority, coordination), leadership (supervision, motivation, remuneration and punishment, training), conflict resolution) and lastely control (choice of control parameters, monitoring of results, comparison of planned and realized, taking corrective actions). In order to improve the current situation, the models of management of railway infrastructure are considered, for which as a manager builds and invests in railway infrastructure, takes care of its modernization, current maintenance, provides access and allocates infrastructure capacities and organizes and regulates railway traffic. In the processing of the management model, the work relies on the Strategy for the Development of Transport of Montenegro in the period 2019-2035, which establishes the situation in the areas of transport, defines the infrastructure, organizational and operational goals of the development of the transport system, which are realized through time and long-term implementation plans.

Current geopolitical and economic conditions for the functioning of railway transport in most post-Soviet states are such that it is extremely difficult to provide required quality of transport services and break-even operations at high expenses for maintaining the railway infrastructure and rolling stock. Dynamics of transportation of the Tajik Railway (TSR) is shown, which displays that most of its sections are classified as low-intensity ones. The paper proposes methodical principles, setting and qualitative analysis of the task of rationalization of operational work and organization of car flows for international transportation, taking into account the specifics of the Tajik Railway. There is a problem of complex maintenance of the efficiency of operational work in modern conditions based on the synthesis of the tasks of self-management (rational internal operational technology of the Tajik Railway) and coordination tasks (technological interaction with railway administrations of other states). Author substantiated the necessity of solving this problem. Proposed classification of technological restrictions and controlled variables in the performance of transport takes into account methods for changing external conditions for the functioning of the railway landfill and methods for increasing internal efficiency of its operation. The search for the solution of the problem involves direct search of variants along its ordered set with clipping of groups of variants that do not correspond to constraints, with the subsequent finding of compromise control over a set of effective alternatives.

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to examine and verify the competitive intelligence tools Alexa and SimilarWeb, which are broadly used for website traffic data estimation. Tested tools belong to the state of the art in this area.Design/methodology/approachThe authors use quantitative approach. Research was conducted on a sample of Czech websites for which there are accurate traffic data values, against which the other data sets (less accurate) provided by Alexa and SimilarWeb will be compared.FindingsThe results show that neither tool can accurately determine the ranking of websites on the internet. However, it is possible to approximately determine the significance of a particular website. These results are useful for another research studies which use data from Alexa or SimilarWeb. Moreover, the results show that it is still not possible to accurately estimate website traffic of any website in the world.Research limitations/implicationsThe limitation of the research lies in the fact that it was conducted solely in the Czech market.Originality/valueSignificant amount of research studies use data sets provided by Alexa and SimilarWeb. However, none of these research studies focus on the quality of the website traffic data acquired by Alexa or SimilarWeb, nor do any of them refer to other studies that would deal with this issue. Furthermore, authors describe approaches to measuring website traffic and based on the analysis, the possible usability of these methods is discussed.

The most popular methods for dynamic risk measures – Value-at-Risk (VaR) and Conditional VaR (CVaR) estimating were analyzed, description and comparative analysis of the methods were fulfilled, recommendations on the use were given. Results of the research were presented in the form of a classification scheme of dynamic risk measures estimating that facilitates the choice of an estimation method. The GARCH-based models of dynamic risk measures VaR and CVaR evaluation for artificially generated series and two time series of log return on a daily basis of the most well-known Asian stock indexes Nikkey225 Stock Index and CSI30 were constructed to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed scheme. A qualitative analysis of the proposed models was conducted. To analyze the quality of the dynamic VaR estimations the Cupets test and the Cristoffersen test were used. For CVaR estimations the V-test was used as quality test. The tests results confirm the high quality of obtained estimations. The proposed classification scheme of dynamic risk measures VaR and CVaR estimating may be useful for risk managers of different financial institutions.

Digital transformation in the railway industry is an important element in the development of railways and should benefit commuters, railway operators, infrastructure managers and rolling stock manufacturers. The process of digitization applies to two domains, i.e. customer service and railway companies’ operation. This paper aims to present previous eff orts regarding the use of digital technologies in customer relations and in the field of operations and maintenance, which translates into the quality of services provided. This paper highlights important concepts of this domain with respect to passenger and freight transport, infrastructure, railway rolling stock and railway traffic management. It is also argued that the process of digitization needs properly trained staff . Examples of innovative initiatives of Polish and European railway companies are covered. Data derived from the Automatic Identification System (AIS) plays a key role in water traffic data mining. However, there are various errors regarding time and space. To improve availability, AIS data quality dimensions are presented for detecting errors of AIS tracks including physical integrity, spatial logical integrity and time accuracy. After systematic summary and analysis, algorithms for error pre-processing are proposed. Track comparison maps and traffic density maps for different types of ships are derived to verify applicability based on the AIS data from the Chinese Zhoushan Islands from January to February 2015. The results indicate that the algorithms can effectively improve the quality of AIS trajectories.

Aged care is projected to be the fastest-growing sector within the health and community care industries (Reynolds, 2009). Strengthening the care-giving workforce, compliance, delivery, and technology is not only vital to our social infrastructure and improving the quality of care, but also has the potential to drive long-term economic growth and contribute to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP). This chapter examines the role of Knowledge Management (KM) in aged care organizations to assist in the delivery of aged care. With limited research related to KM in aged care, this chapter advances knowledge and offers a unique view of KM from the perspective of 22 aged care stakeholders. Using in-depth interviewing, this chapter explores the definition of knowledge in aged care facilities, the importance of knowledge planning, capture, and diffusion for accreditation purposes, and offers recommendations for the development of sustainable knowledge management practice and development.

Railway infrastructure comprises a large collection of diverse and complex systems and structures. Many of them are aging assets and require a significant budget to deliver the maintenance to ensure the required safety and service performance standards. With such a large amount of money spent each year to maintain and renew the network assets, small percentage savings can amount to substantial sums of money. There is therefore a huge incentive to better understand the degradation that assets experience and how these can be effectively managed through the implementation of efficient maintenance strategies. Track and bridges are the most expensive assets to keep in the required condition, and this chapter provides a method to analyse their degradation and build Petri net models to predict the future state of the asset, the number of each maintenance activity which are expected to be undertaken, and their costs experienced by following a particular strategy. Utilising these models enables the quality of the asset management decisions made to be improved and optimised.
