Aim: The aim of the study included the effect of aqueous extract (AE) and ethyl acetate extract (EAE) on blood sugar in diabetic rats and their effects on liver enzymes and lipid panel in control and diabetic rats. Furthermore, the antioxidant activity of the EAE was studied in vitro and compared with AE. Materials and Methods: Sugar and antioxidant content of AE and EAE were determined. In vitro antioxidant activity of AE and EAE was estimated by 2, 2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl and ABTS*+ radical scavenging assay, ferric-reducing antioxidant power assay, and total antioxidant assay. To study the effect of the extracts on blood glucose level (BGL), lipid profile, and liver function in non-diabetic and diabetic rats, five groups of six rats each were treated with distilled water, AE, EAE, glibenclamide (GLB), and sucrose for 8 days. Plasma glucose level (PGL), total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), transaminases (alanine transaminase [ALT] and aspartate transaminase [AST]), and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) were determined. The effect of the interventions on BGL after acute administration also was investigated. Diabetes was induced by streptozotocin injection. Results: EAE contains significantly lower content of fructose and glucose than AE (p<0.05), and it has no sucrose. AE and EAE exhibited a significant antioxidant activity and high antioxidant content; the antioxidant content was higher in AE than EAE (p<0.05). In diabetic rats, acute treatment by AE increased PGL, while EAE significantly lowered BGL as compared to the untreated diabetic rats. Both interventions significantly decreased BGL as compared to the sucrose treated group in diabetic rats (p<0.05). EAE was more potent than GLB. Sucrose caused 13% increment in BGL after 8 days of induction of diabetes, while AE caused only 1.3% increment. Daily treatment by EAE decreased significantly AST, ALT, ALP, and TC. EAE decreased significantly TC and TG level in diabetic rats in comparison to the untreated diabetic group. Conclusion: The study showed for the 1st time that EAE has more hypoglycemic effect than AE, and both extracts prevent the increment in BGL on day 8 after induction of diabetes observed in the control and sucrose treated group. EAE significantly ameliorated the lipid and liver function disorders induced by diabetes.

Background. This study investigates the biological activities ofAnthyllis henonianaflowers extracts.Materials and Methods. Antioxidant activity and thein vitroinhibitory effect of key digesting enzymes related to postprandial hyperglycemia were determined. Diabetic rats were orally and daily given the best extract from flowers ofAnthyllis henonianaat a dose of acarbose for one month.Results. Among the extracts, the ethyl acetate one displayed remarkable antioxidant activity including DPPH (IC50= 2.34 mg/mL) and was more effective in inhibitingα-glucosidase (IC50= 17μg/mL) thanα-amylase (IC50= 920μg /mL) activities.In vivo, the results proved that ethyl acetate extract at doses of 400 mg/kg bw decreased significantly the blood glucose level and lipid profile levels and increased the activities of antioxidant enzymes. These protective impacts ofAnthyllis henonianaethyl acetate flowers extract were confirmed by histological results.Conclusion. This study demonstrates, for the first time, thatAnthyllis henonianaflowers ethyl acetate extract is effective in inhibiting hyperglycemia and oxidative stress caused by diabetes.

Objective: Ficus benghalensis Linn. (Moraceae family) is commonly known as banyan tree in English, which is used traditionally in India. The literature survey showed that the aerial roots of this plant are yet to be explored. Our main interest is to evaluate its pharmacognostic and phytochemical character by the standard monograph and to explore its in vitro antioxidant and in vivo analgesic activity study with ethyl acetate extract.Methods: Pharmacognostic evaluation and phytochemical screening have been done using standard monograph. An in vitro antioxidant activity using ethyl acetate extract has been done using four different methods. In vivo analgesic activity of the ethyl acetate extract has been evaluated by acetic acid-induced writhing test in mice and tail flick method.Results: Aerial roots of F. benghalensis have been found the rich source of steroidal glycosides, cardiac glycosides, flavonoids, tri-terpenoids, and phenols. The presence of phellem, phellogen, xylem, and phloem has been found after microscopic investigation. All the pharmacognostic parameters proved its purity. Results showed the absence of heavy metals. The ethyl acetate extract has shown potent antioxidant activity at 100 μg/ml concentration and higher analgesic activity at the concentration of 400 mg/kg than 200 mg/kg.Conclusion: Pharmacognostic characteristics and phytochemical properties revealed in this study could be used for the pharmacopoeial standard. Ethyl acetate extract showed potent antioxidant and analgesic activity.

<p class="Abstract">In the present study, the anti-oxidant and cytotoxic effects of the different solvent extracts of <em>Pogostemon mollis</em> were analysed. The phenolic, tannin and flavonoid contents were highest in the ethyl acetate extract and analogous to the antioxidant activity results. The extracts showed activities similar to the standard antioxidants. The extent to which the extracts protect free radical damage on DNA was evaluated and showed good genoprotective effects. Bacterial cells and fungal spores and hyphae showed visible damages due to the treatment of ethyl acetate extract. Finally in the cytotoxic analysis, IC<sub>50</sub> value was calculated based on the absorbance value of different concentrations. It concluded that <em>P. mollis</em> is a prospective candidate for the various therapeutic applications especially its ethyl acetate extract.</p><p> </p>

Caulerpa racemosa merupakan rumput laut hijau yang mengandung senyawa aktif yang berpotensi sebagai antibakteri dan antioksidan. Perbedaan profil fitokimia dan bioaktivitas suatu ekstrak dipengaruhi oleh kepolaran pelarut ekstraksi. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mempelajari profil fitokimia, aktivitas antibakteri dan antioksidan ekstrak C. racemosa. Ekstrak diperoleh dari sampel segar C. racemosa yang dimaserasi menggunakan pelarut n-heksana, etil asetat, dan metanol. Uji antibakteri dilakukan dengan metode Resazurin Microtitter Assay (REMA) terhadap bakteri Escherichia coli dan Staphylococcus aureus. Aktivitas antioksidan diuji menggunakan metode 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) dan Ferric Reducing Antioxidant Power (FRAP). Hasil penapisan fitokimia memperlihatkan bahwa ekstrak n-heksana mengandung alkaloid dan triterpenoid, sedangkan ekstrak etil asetat dan metanol mengandung alkaloid, flavonoid, tanin, fenol, dan steroid. Aktivitas antibakteri terbaik ditunjukkan oleh ekstrak etil asetat dengan nilai Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) terhadap E. coli sebesar 250 mg/mL. Ekstrak etil asetat C. racemosa juga memperlihatkan aktivitas antioksidan terbaik dengan nilai IC50 DPPH sebesar 110,7 mg/mL dan nilai FRAP sebesar 96,68 mmol Fe (II)/g. ABSTRACTCaulerpa racemosa is a green seaweed that contains active compounds that are potential for antibacterial and antioxidant. The phytochemical constituents and bioactivity of an extract depend on the extraction solvent polarity. This study aimed to determine the phytochemical profiles, antibacterial and antioxidant activity of C. racemosa extracts. Extracts were obtained from the fresh C. racemosa samples that were macerated with n-hexane, ethyl acetate, and methanol. Antibacterial assay was tested by Resazurin Microtiter Assay (REMA) method against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. Antioxidant activity was determined using 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and Ferric Reducing Antioxidant Power (FRAP) method. Phytochemical screening showed that n-hexane extract contained alkaloid and triterpenoid, while ethyl acetate and methanol extracts contained alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins, phenols, and steroids. The most active extract in the antibacterial assay was ethyl acetate extract with a Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) value of 250 mg/mL against E. coli. Ethyl acetate extract of C. racemosa also showed the best antioxidant activity where the IC50 of DPPH value was 110.7 mg/mL and the FRAP value was 96.68 mmol Fe(II)/g.

Objective: The aim of the present study is to examine the phytochemical components and the biological activities of the whole parts of Onobrychis crista-galli (L.) Lam. growing in Algeria. Methods: The structures of the isolated compounds 1-15 were elucidated using different spectroscopic methods and by comparison with literature data. The biological evaluation of the plant was determined by the in vitro antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities. The antioxidant activity of various extracts (petroleum ether, ethyl acetate, and n-butanol) and some isolated flavonoids was assessed by using five different test systems, namely, 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl-hydrazil (DPPH), 2,2’- azinobis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid (ABTS), cupric reducing antioxidant capacity (CUPRAC), superoxide alkaline DMSO, and β-carotene/linoleic acid tests. In addition, the total phenolic and flavonoid contents of the extracts were determined as gallic acid and quercetin equivalents, respectively. In vitro anti-inflammatory activity by protein denaturation was measured for all extracts. Results: Phytochemical investigation of the ethyl acetate and n-butanol extracts of Onobrychis crista- galli led to the isolation for the first time of fifteen known compounds. The present study reports for the first time the isolation and identification of fifteen known compounds from this species. The ethyl acetate extract had rich phenolic content indicating (31.09 ± 0.40 mg gallic acid equivalents/g of fresh weight), while n-butanol extract displayed a high content in flavonoid compounds (60.70±0.7 mg quercetin equivalents/ g of fresh weight). This investigation indicated that the ethyl acetate extract of O. crista-galli showed the highest antioxidant activity (IC50= 17.13±0.51 μg/mL, DPPH), (IC50= 82.99±2.50 μg/mL, ABTS), and (A0.50= 94.67±0.41 μg/mL, CUPRAC), (IC50= 97.09±2.20 μg/mL, DMSO), (IC50: 36.73±1.17 μg/mL, β-carotene/linoleic acid). Furthermore, the compound luteolin 5-methyl ether (14) exhibited a good antioxidant activity in DPPH (IC50= 06.05 ± 0.15 μg /mL) and CUPRAC (A0.5= 12.57 ± 0.34 μg /mL) assays. Moreover, the ethyl acetate and nbutanol extracts of O. crista-galli evidenced a good to moderate in vitro anti-inflammatory activity. Conclusion: The extracts of the whole plant of O. crista-galli (L.) Lam. showed potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities.

The present study was designed to evaluate the oxidative stress as well as the therapeutic effect ofAgaricus blazeiMuril (A. Blazei) in rats with streptozotocin-induced diabetes. We used 25 Wistar rats, and DM was induced by injecting streptozotocin (70 mg/Kg i.p.).Agaricus blazeiMuril was administered daily starting 40 days after disease onset.A. Blazeiwas tested as an aqueous extract for its phytochemical composition, and its antioxidant activity in vitro was also evaluated. Lipoperoxidation (LPO), and superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase, and glutathione peroxidase activities were measured in the pulmonary tissue, as well as the presence of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), through immunohistochemistry. An anatomopathologic study was also performed. Phytochemical screening ofA. Blazeidetected the presence of alkaloids and saponins. The extract exhibited a significant antioxidant activity in the DPPH-scavenging and the hipoxanthine/xanthine oxidase assays. Pulmonary LPO increased in diabetic animals (0.43±0.09;P<.001) as compared to the control group (0.18±0.02), followed by a reduction in theA. Blazei-treated group (0.33±0.04;P<.05). iNOS was found increased in the lung in diabetic rats and reduced in theA. Blazei-treated group. The pulmonary tissue in diabetic rats showed oxidative alterations related to the streptozotocin treatment. TheA. Blazeitreatment effectively reduced the oxidative stress and contributed to tissue recovery.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the in-vivo and in-vitro potentials of ethyl acetate extract of P. americana leaf in alloxan-induced diabetic rats. Quantitative phytochemicals analyzed includes; flavonoids, saponins, tannins, alkaloids and phenolics. Measurement of antioxidant activity using 1,1-Diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl, total antioxidant capacity, hydroxyl radical, hydrogen peroxide, superoxide radical and ferric reducing activity of the extract was carried out. Hyperglycemia was induced by intraperitoneal injection of alloxan monohydrate to albino rats. In-vivo anti-oxidant potentials of the extract were evaluated by measuring liver homogenate activity of superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione reductase, glutathione peroxidase and malondyaldehyde in alloxan-induced diabetic rats administered with the extract.  A total of 30 Albino rats were used for this experiment and they were divided into six groups of 5 rats each. Group A; normal control, Group B; diabetic control, Groups C-E; experimental groups administered with different doses (100, 200 and 400 mg/kg body weight respectively); of the extract and Group F; glucophage (84 mg/kg body weight, standard drug) for 4 weeks. This study was conducted in the Department of Biochemistry, Bayero University, Kano, in August, 2018. Data was analyzed using one-way ANOVA with P=.05 value considered as significant. Results of the quantitative phytochemical investigation shows that the extract is rich in phenolics (184.1±0.6), flavonoids (115.8±2.1), alkaloids (41.5±1.8), with least concentration of tannis (21.2±0.8) and saponins (15.2±2.3). The extract exhibited high radical scavenging activity against synthetic free radicals (DPPH), reactive oxygen species (peroxide, superoxide and hydroxyl acid) and high ability to reduce Fe3+ to Fe2+ (FRAP). The activities of antioxidant enzymes of the treated rats were increased significantly (P=.05) while the level malondyaldehyde was significantly decreased (P=.05) in the treated groups. Ethyl acetate leaf extract of Persea americana contains phytochemical substances which improved antioxidant status and can be use as herbal therapy for the management of oxidative stress induced by diabetes mellitus and associated complications.

The aim of this study is to evaluate in vitro antioxidant activities of Ruta montana L.  extracts. This activity was evaluated by three methods : DPPH (2, 2'-diphenyl- 1- picrylhydrazy), bleaching of β-carotene and chelation of ferrous iron. Results showed that ethyl acetate extract (EAE) represents the highest amount of total polyphenols, tannins and flavonoids with 257,1 ± 0,703µg gallic acid equivalent/mg of extract,  251 ± 1.41 µg tannic acid equivalent /mg of extract,117,4 ± 3,451 µg quercetin equivalents/mg of extract, 139,5 ± 4,107 µg rutin equivalents/mg of extract, respectively. In the DPPH assay, ethyl acetate extract showed the higher scavenging capacity (IC50 = 0.044 ± 0.001 mg/ml) followed by methanol, aqueous and chloroform extract. Whereas, AqE showed the best chelating effect and the best inhibitory capacity of the coupled oxidation of linoleic acid/ β-carotene.
