Discussions about sustainable communities as a significant measure in social sustainability began in the 2000s. Sustainable communities are defined as places in which existing and future generations would like to work and live. They contribute to the well-being and quality of life and offer equal opportunities to their residents. The definitions are similar to the objectives of one of the most influential movements in the history of urban planning: the Garden City. The principles of the Garden City are applicable to new and existing towns and its concept has been adopted in different contexts until today. Therefore, many lessons can be learnt regarding sustainable urbanism by studying social sustainability in this type of urban settlement. As a first step towards this aim, this paper studies the experience of living in the Garden City of Karlsruhe today. A survey was conducted among the current inhabitants. The study shows a high level of satisfaction and the tendency for a long residency in the Garden City because of the reasons like ample greenery, central location, and quietness of the settlement. The results will be used as the first dataset for developing a framework for urban social sustainability in the Garden Cities.  Keywords: sustainable urbanism, social sustainability, sustainable communities, user satisfaction, Garden Cities

Abstract The main objective of the study is to examine to what extent the architectural design quality and social sustainability are taken into account in building certification systems. The following most commonly used building assessments in Europe (focus on Germany, Slovakia and Czech Republic) have been investigated: BREEAM, LEED, CESBA, LEVEL(s), DGNB, BNB, BNK, NaWoh, SBToolCZ and WELL. After extensive research of chosen certification systems and various sources on topics such as conditions of well-being, sociocultural indicators, assessment of social performance of sustainable buildings and design quality assessment, the main social and architectural design quality aspects were determined and used for further analysis and final evaluation. Studied aspects are divided into the following categories: user satisfaction and quality of life (building-related), sustainable and healthy lifestyle (building-related), architecture – design quality (building-related), innovation and social responsibility (external). The article contains a summary of results with overall evaluation and comparison of certification systems including weighting of studied categories in selected building assessments. Furthermore, indicators used in building certifications associated with the quality of life and the quality of architectural expression and their weighting are described and presented.

The main axes of this study, which is differentiated from contemporary architecture studies as the first academic work in the scope of post-occupancy evaluation floating spaces, are based on evaluating the spatial satisfaction and the meeting of these expectations by its users. A post-occupancy evaluation (POE) yielded a dataset of 117 yacht-users for whom demographic information, activities, and length-of-stay were recorded. This paper reports the study conducted on 78 yachts in Turkey, focusing particularly on the physical design features. The questionnaire is based on the observation and applied as post-occupancy evaluation on the examples of yachts from Turkey. It also questions the effect of the sea on the spatial perception and evaluates the user satisfaction of the interiors and exteriors of yacht spaces. Assessment on the physical design of yacht interiors from the perspective of the staff and the owner is the method to understand their expectation, preferences and experiences. In addition, the satisfaction of different user groups and general evaluation of spaces are explained within the graphics that include the data and analysis which are obtained from the interviews. Empirical results indicate that different user categories (owner and staff) that are presented in the scope of the post-occupancy evaluations (POE) have different satisfaction levels. Findings of this study demonstrate that the difference of satisfaction levels between the users caused different space needs and expectations from their spaces. Although floating spaces have unconventional environmental specifications from the terra architecture, high level of satisfaction in yachts shows that the floating spaces should be evaluated with the scope of their spatial characteristics, in consequence of the spatial perception on the sea and the psychological concepts. In conclusion, the management implications of the study are discussed.

Objective: This study aimed to collect and analyse real-life data to characterise the initial use of Hydrofiber Technology dressings for the management of exuding wounds in France. Method: An online survey of nurses provided data from patients managed with two dressings—AQUACEL Extra or AQUACEL Ribbon—as the primary dressing. At baseline, sociodemographic data, relevant medical histories and wound characteristics were recorded. The status of the wounds was then examined on days seven and 14 of management, together with scores of both clinician and patient satisfaction. Results: The survey included 1093 patients with a mean age of 65.9 years, comprising 53.3% women; 615 (56.3%) patients presented with acute wounds and 478 with hard-to-heal wounds. Wounds were reported to have healed or improved in 79.4% and 88.1% of the patients after 7 and 14 days, respectively. After 14 days, the wounds were smaller (p<0.001), and the percentage of sloughy wound bed tissue had decreased (p<0.001), while the percentage of granulation tissue and epithelialisation increased significantly (p=0.024 and p=0.047, respectively). Tolerance of the dressing was good, with low levels of pain reported, both while wearing the dressing and on removal. On day 14, nurses reported a high level of satisfaction, while 70% and 42.7% of patients with acute and hard-to-heal wounds, respectively, were ‘very satisfied’. Conclusion: The Hydrofiber Technology dressings aided wound healing when used in the management of a wide range of acute and hard-to-heal wounds in medical and surgical indications. User satisfaction was high from both healthcare professionals and patients.

Web-scale discovery systems are becoming prevalent in research libraries. Although a number of studies have explored various impacts of discovery systems, few studies exist on user satisfaction. The investigators of this study evaluated user satisfaction with the discovery service Summon at Ryerson University, using online questionnaires and in-person focus groups. Results indicated a high level of satisfaction overall, although this was heavily influenced by the quality of search results over ease of use. The study provides insight into the information-seeking behavior and search preferences of a user when a discovery layer is implemented in a research library.

AbstractThe decreasing supply of qualified people ready to take up employment, observed for several years on the labour market, results in the strengthening of the employee’s position. The consequences of this process affect not only the companies but also scientific institutions. The employee’s market, which is shaped as a result of the following changes, forces employers to focus increasingly on activities aimed at attracting and retaining individuals who constitute their human capital. The aim of our article is to diagnose satisfaction levels of various job facets and differences in attachment to the workplace in groups of scientists with varied job expectation profiles. On this basis, it will be possible to indicate the job facets that scientific institutions should take into consideration in order to provide researchers with a high level of job satisfaction. To broaden knowledge about the subject, we used data collected by the National Information Processing Institute in 2017 in a nationwide representative sample of 840 scientists who were at various stages of their academic career, represented all areas of science and worked in all types of scientific units in Poland. By performing factor analysis and a clustering procedure on variables describing researchers’ job expectations we were able to categorize the respondents into three groups: 1) demanding, 2) aspiring and 3) unengaged. The demanding employees have high expectations in all job facets that we examined, i.e.: economic and organizational matters, developmental and social opportunities as well as employment flexibility. The aspiring scientists above all appreciate developmental and social opportunities more than other groups. On the contrary, the unengaged employees value developmental and social opportunities the least while other job facets are moderately significant for them. The survey of satisfaction of particular groups of scientists with their current employer indicates the need to focus the scientific institutions employing them on different aspects of work. In the case of demanding employees, it is important to take care of their economic well-being. On the other hand, in order to increase satisfaction from work of scientists from the aspiring group, it will be important to provide them with a higher level of satisfaction from the development and social sphere. The greatest challenge may be the satisfaction of unengaged employees who declare a relatively low general level of satisfaction with the workplace, and at the same time do not have well-established expectations towards the institutions employing them.

Families and schools are two of the central living environments of children. Their collaboration is therefore seen as an important factor in education, having a high impact on learning outcomes, motivation, and children’s health. Nevertheless, current research also shows potential tensions in the educational partnership of families and schools, as different opinions and expectations about goals, competences and roles in education can result in conflicts. Based on a nationwide survey of Swiss parents who assessed the school situation of their children (N = 1275), this study examined parent’s experiences, needs and expectations regarding collaboration with schools, with a focus on important issues such as involvement in educational decisions, inclusion, and health. Results show a generally high level of satisfaction among parents, which is particularly related to the emotional well-being of their children at school, the quality of collaboration, and the trust in schools and teachers, both for parents of children with and without special educational needs (SEN). Nevertheless, involvement in educational decisions is perceived as rather marginal. Furthermore, the results indicate that parents of children with SEN are less confident about their children’s future. They are also less optimistic about their children’s academic self-concept and slightly more dissatisfied with their children’s school. Parents’ attitudes toward inclusion showed a wide range of opinions: on the one hand, inclusion is seen positively in terms of developing students’ social skills or promoting a more inclusive society. On the other hand, however, the resources of the school and the skills of the teachers were sometimes considered as insufficient. Our findings provide important insights regarding the further development of the educational partnership between schools and families. Good collaboration between schools and families can create an environment that promotes students’ emotional well-being as well as their academic skills. The positive impact of this partnership has been demonstrated in numerous studies and contributes to the implementation of an inclusive healthy school.

Introduction. Monitoring of the social and professional well-being of teachers (in- cluding at the regional level) is conditioned by the need to assess the effectiveness of the ongoing social reforms, including the modernization of the Russian education system. The purpose of the paper is to analyze the content and dynamic characteristics of the manifestation of social and professional health indicators of teachers as a social and professional group at the level of the Republic of Mordovia, taking into account the historical changes in the state of the society. Materials and Methods. The materials used were sociological surveys conducted in the Republic of Mordovia among teachers of general education schools. To analyze the data obtained, traditional statistical methods (comparison, grouping, index method) were used, as well as methods for testing statistical hypotheses. Results. The specificity of the social and professional well-being of teachers in the Republic of Mordovia has been studied. It has been proved that over the past 25 years the level of social well-being of teachers in the Republic has increased significantly: the interviewed teachers have shown a higher level of satisfaction with personal se- curity, material prosperity, living standards of their families, entertainment, leisure, housing and working conditions. A high level of satisfaction with the profession of the teacher and its relationship with the experience of pedagogical work, as well as with the place of residence, has been revealed. Discussion and Conclusions. A high level of professional identity is inherent in more teachers with longer work experience, but the problem of age changes makes the professional recruitment of personnel into the school system urgent. The results obtained may serve as a stimulus for a more extensive study of the regional issues of modern teaching, including its ‘social portraits’, and may also be useful to the regional authorities dealing with the elaboration of education development programs.
