Among other negative economic and health outcomes, the global tourism industry is one of the most affected areas by the recent pandemic. A recent estimation shows that USD 1.3 trillion were lost in revenues, in 2020 only – which represents more than 11 times the loss suffered during the 2009 global economic crisis. It is by far the most the worst year in tourism history. As a direct consequence, many jobs are at risk, especially in small and medium-sized enterprises, in countries where tourism is the main economic component, the situation is quite dramatic. In this paper, we will analyse what happened in world large regions in the sector, what the perspectives to recovery are, and what are the rebound expectations and consumer confidence. We will also investigate the specificity of the tourism situation in Switzerland, where since the beginnings of the pandemic, the big cities and tourist locations have suffered greatly from the absence of foreign tourists. The cities close to the airports showed the strongest decreases in attendance. In contrast, those which are traditionally very touristy were only slightly affected by the decline in the number of foreign visitors.

The market of tourist services is constantly changing due to various impulses coming from  international environment as well as from factors of national, regional and local level. The determinants  of change in global tourism are primarily associated with the processes of globalization (including the  global economic crisis’ years 2008−2010). The aim of this study is to analyze the tourism sector in  conditions of global economic crisis. The analysis of demand and supply data – for the period of years  2006−2010 with forecasts for 2011 – made it possible to determine the economic condition of the  sector. It seems that tourism was sensitive to the contemporary global economic crisis, while decreases  in the indicators analyzed were relatively small and were mainly observed in 2009.

The article provides an analytical study of the current situation and areas of international tourism as a component of the global economy. The purpose of the study: to identify key factors and analyze the dynamics of the international tourism industry, and to identify promising ways to develop it to restore a leading role in the global economic system. Until the beginning of 2020, the global tourism industry was considered one of the most promising areas of economic activity: a significant contribution to GDP, growing employment in the industry and new jobs in related fields contributed to the active attraction of new businesses and investment. Now the international tourism industry is experiencing a crisis, losing billions in profits both globally. The main negative factors in the resumption of tourist flow are the existing restrictions on travel, slowing down vaccination, the global economic crisis, uncoordinated efforts to resolve the problem between governments, low consumer confidence and the long resumption of air services. In the research course it is substantiated that among the proposed development scenarios there is definitely no sense to expect optimism, because a new coronavirus is spreading around the world and the pace of global recovery will slow down again. Taking into account all the current circumstances of international tourism development, the most current development trends have been identified, including: ensuring social distance during travel, implementation of sustainable tourism principles, comprehensive informatization of the route and full awareness of tourists before and during travel, reorientation to FIT-tourism, change of popular tourist destinations and transfer preferences. Taking into account the identified current circumstances, negative factors and certain trends in world tourism will allow all tourism service providers to resume their activities at the international level and ensure a sustainable flow of tourists, stabilize their financial and economic situation and end the global economic crisis.

In article shown the problem with the assessment of the importance of tourism was recognized, and the first initiatives to develop the so-called tourism satellite in the 1990s. The aim of research is to answer the question: what is the share of the tourism economy in generating GDP in Poland and in Europe? The second goal was to answer the question: how has the Polish tourism economy responded to the global economic crisis and has this reaction been similar to European markets? The following hypotheses were adopted: first, the share of the tourism economy in Poland is smaller than the average for Europe, and, second, the Polish tourism economy reacted better to the global economic crisis than other European economies. The article uses data from the satellite tourism account for Poland and World Tourism and Travel Council (WTTC) data showing the multiplier effect of tourism in Europe. The data analysis shows that share of tourism economy in Polish GDP is 6% and the share of tourism industry in Europe in GDP is 8% in the end of second decade of twenty-first century.
